THE SHERIFF AND GUY OF GISBORNE
uh. try to stay with me for a second. so incest motifs are a huge part of medieval lit. you see it in arthuriana cycles, you see it in romances, it's a whole thing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Incest and the Medieval Imagination, Elizabeth Archibald
so robin hood. both adaptions and the text itself, tend to get interesting with guy of gisborne. and I will say that while I found the media being discussed in this text absolutely fucking insufferable to watch, the discussion on it was delicious, impeccable, show stopping
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mouvance, Greenwood, and Gender in The Adventures of Robin Hood and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Brian J Levy and Lesley Coote
and with regards to discussions on the origin text (which I love and adore forever)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Horseplay: Robin Hood, Guy of Gisborne, and the Neg(oti)ation of the Bestial, Stuart Kane
we're. getting to the point, I promise. guy of gisborne and the sheriff in my own "adaption" are not cousins, but brothers in law (fucked up brothers in law are my thing over on my other blog. brutus and cassius? I'm there. caligula and lepidus? all over that, baby!) because I'm aiming for an adjacent transgression.
on the topic of adjacent transgressions and guy's comment in this comic about cannibalism: there's an overlap in various genres of literature, predominantly in branches of horror and tragedy: between cannibalism and incest. (additionally! a lot of texts will take on christian subtexts and allusions, so there's a bonus homoerotic cannibalism discussion happening wrt communion that I'll get into in the future) it's about. chomping. the teeth, you know.

Statius and Virgil: The Thebaid and the Reinterpretation of the Aeneid, Randall T. Ganiban
there's a 100% chance I will revise the sheriff's design at some point, but I wanted to draw the flowers exploding out of the spine so bad
AND FINALLY, the neck focus on guy is half due to his fate in his origin tale (beheaded) and half my own invention: I girl-with-a-green-ribboned him. a little narrative necromancy, if you will.

Richard Edson, Eszter Balint, and John Lurie in Stranger Than Paradise (Jim Jarmusch, 1984)
Cast: John Lurie, Eszter Balint, Richard Edson, Cecillia Stark, Danny Rosen, Rammellzee, Tom DiCillo, Richard Boes, Rockets Redglare, Harvey Perr, Brian J. Burchill, Sara Driver, Paul Sloane. Screenplay: Jim Jarmusch. Cinematography: Tom DiCillo. Production design: Matt Buchwald, Sam Edwards, Louis Tancredi, Stephen Torton. Film editing: Jim Jarmusch, Melody London. Music: John Lurie.
Like a botanist discovering rare plants pushing through cracked pavement and a littered vacant lot, writer-director Jim Jarmusch finds curiously indomitable life forms in the back streets of ungentrified New York, the frozen outskirts of Cleveland, and the parts of coastal Florida that tourists speed through on their way to Orlando or Miami. And he presents them to us in a film with a beautifully eccentric rhythm to it. Stranger Than Paradise is composed of 67 single takes grouped into three sections: "The New World," in which Eva (Eszter Balint) arrives from Budapest to stay with her cousin Willie (John Lurie) in his ratty one-room New York apartment; "One Year Later," in which Willie and his friend Eddie (Richard Edson) drive to wintry Cleveland, where Eva has gone to live with her Aunt Lotte (Cecillia Stark); and "Paradise," in which Willie, Eddie, and Eva go to Florida. To say that nothing happens in the film isn't entirely incorrect, especially in the New York and Cleveland sections, in which Willie and Eddie spend most of their time playing cards, smoking, and generally getting on each other's nerves, as well as Eva's. In Florida, they lose money gambling, win it back, and Eva accidentally strikes it rich when she's mistaken for a drug runner's bagman. Yet it's the blackout structure of the film that gives it the illusion of a plot, or at least forward motion. Once you catch its rhythm, you may find yourself, as I did, eagerly anticipating the way in which Jarmusch will end each scene. He rarely does it with a gag or a punchline, but somehow in ways that make each scene feel like a kind of epiphany. In one of the longest sequences, we do nothing but watch the three major characters, plus Eva's boyfriend Billy (Danny Rosen), as they sit in a Cleveland theater watching a movie that, because it has no dialogue but is punctuated with various grunts, seems to be a kung fu film. Billy, who we learn has bought the tickets for everyone, is walled off from Eva by Eddie and Willie, who sit on either side of her, and when he passes the popcorn to Eva, Eddie takes a big handful. We learn more about these characters from this wordless sequence than we do from some of the film's expository dialogue. Tom DiCillo's black-and-white cinematography makes the most of the locations that were chosen for their blandness, bleakness, drabness, or, in the case of the frozen, snow-covered Lake Erie, emptiness. The soundtrack, composed for string quartet by Lurie, is supplemented by Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You," a foreshadowing of Hawkins's appearance in Jarmusch's Mystery Train (1989).

forget, between heaven and earth
Laesia laughed coldly. "Do you forget yourself, Stesara? Where you are? This is my throne, my house."
few, between heaven and earth
At last the hill leveled out, enough for Laesia to come to a stop. Her entire body ached. The air had been knocked out of her and she was too pained to even attempt to roll herself over onto her back, even though breathing was more difficult lying on her stomach. After a few moments of trying to get her breath back, she pushed herself to her feet.
fast, where paradise died and lived
Sophie knew people who had enlisted, of course—it seemed every young man she had ever known had signed up for the service. Arthur had joined the Navy a year before the war even started, and all of her male cousins were in the ranks too, all of the neighbors’ sons who had lived on the same street as her for practically her entire life. Yet the news Anne now delivered was such a jolt to her. She was almost as close to Brian as she was to his sister. Sophie could have called him the brother she’d never had. She could see him now, a strong but wiry gentleman with a jovial sense of humor and fast feet—he’d played baseball at their high school and had broken the record for bases stolen in a single season.
found, where paradise died and lived
Her father, a professor of marine biology at the university, was drowned after he was pulled out by a rip tide while on a research trip. He had been off the coast of Maui and planned to return at the end of the week. Then, quite unexpectedly on Thursday, a police officer and someone from the university pulled into the driveway to explain what had happened. They had already brought the body back to Oahu. Lillian went off in the police car while Sophie stayed at home to worry alone. When Lillian returned, she found her daughter sleeping at the kitchen table. The next day, Good Friday, Sophie called out from school and went with her mother to the funeral home. They spent their Easter weekend phoning and writing relatives of the news and planning the memorial service.

Richard J. Heigl, Sr., a native of Buffalo New York and long time resident of Houma, 93, was called home to spend eternity with his beloved Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Saturday, April 16, 2022.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, April 26, 2022 from 10am to 12pm, with the memorial service to start at 12pm, at Samart Funeral Home of Houma, West Park.
He is survived by one sister, Geraldine Sobarnia, two sons, Richard J. Heigl, Jr. and his wife Denise, Jonathan Heigl, his son in law, Riecke Schaefer; 10 grandchildren, Brittney Oldham and her husband Brad, Jake Heigl and his wife Ashley, Lindsay Cantrelle and her husband Jarrett, Tara Heigl, Jonathan Heigl, Jr. and his wife Sarah, Lauren Heigl, Rachel Heigl, Lee Arceneaux, Jr. and his wife Jessica, Brad Arceneaux and his wife Katie, Brian Arceneaux; and 21 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Connie, of 56 years, daughter Dixie Schaefer, his parents Joseph and Laurel Heigl, and his brother Joseph Heigl.
My Father's story "Mercy Bestowed on a Lost Sinner" taken directly from a letter he had written to his cousin his words.
Things don't "just happen," but all are related to our good by a gracious God. Don't ask me how, for providence is nearly as great a mystery as redemption. We have been preserved until now, and that's a blessing.
But, you would not believe the hills and valleys that I have traveled to get to this point. As I grow older, I can see God's hand in every situation. I can see mercy extended for no cause, grace intervening when justice was due. In early life I was very athletic, morally clean, because God controlled the situations in my life-mildly interested in church, read the Bible some, but never saw much in it except "don't do this," and "don't do that.
I had every intention to study for the ministry so I enrolled in Bob Jones University (Greenville, SC) in 1953-but just before I left for school the second greatest thing in my life happened to me. I was reading a sermon out loud to my Mom in the backyard as she was hanging clothes. The text was Jeremiah 17:9, "The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked: who can know it?" That message was called "The Total Depravity of the Human Heart." As I was reading, how I hoped Mom would understand it! She asked, "Son, do you understand those things?" I said, "Sure I do! The harder the preaching, the better I like it." Soon I finished reading and walked down the driveway to go back in the house when a voice heard only by my heart said, "You really don't know what you are reading. What you've read is true, but you are a total stranger to all of it. You are the lost, ignorant sinner you were reading about!" All I could do was quietly admit, "Yes, Lord, I am lost." Then I figured I'd quickly "get saved" and get on to my preaching, but to no avail.
I arrived at Bob Jones University as scheduled. The first week they had assembly every day to get everybody "saved" before school got underway. Three thousand preacher boy students, all of them "saved" except me. You see, all they had to do was make a decision, say they believed that Jesus was the Son of God, and by this simple believing they were told that they were saved. I had done all of this several years before God awakened me to the fact that I was still a lost sinner. Now God was teaching me a few things about this heart of mine which I thought was so "righteous." I now knew that to be saved, God the Spirit would have to do the work. That same voice which told me I was lost must also speak peace to my heart and reveal Christ to me (II Corinthians 4:4-6).
I did fine in all BJU classes except in religion. There, instead of really learning anything about God's Word, they wanted small groups of us to go out and find children playing in their yard or in the streets. We must force them to say they believed in Jesus, get their names and hurry back to class with a "convert" to our credit! My soul totally rebelled against such a bunch of foolishness and I skipped every session after the first one! What a horrible deception and trafficking in souls! I gave out a few sermons by old Puritan writers and it nearly caused a split in the school, so I graciously bowed out after one semester. A short time after that is when Mom, Sis and I moved to New Orleans, LA. to be under sound preaching. That was in 1954. My only desire now was to know the Lord who died for sinners. Mom endured it, Sis hated it, but God was bringing me down.
Soon I met Connie, a girl who worked as church typist and had actually typed the first message God used to awaken me. God had revealed Christ to her heart when she was only 17. The Lord gave her a love for me and me for her; her special beauty to me was that she was in Christ.
Self-righteous hearts have the most to learn, and slowly but surely the Lord was teaching me that first lesson-that the heart truly is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. In the following years we were poor, with a growing family, and I cried unto the Lord continually and wore out several Bibles.
Read till your eyes water, pray till you fall asleep, but you can't make God save you.
In October 1968 a preacher from Michigan held services in a country home near where we lived. Many of our friends and neighbors were there. After the message, I felt such a desire to know Christ that I stood up and said so, in the presence of everyone who knew me. (Feeling myself such a lost sinner, the one desire of my heart was to be joined to Christ.) Those people all thought I was a saint, for I had talked often of things in the bible, and I lived the best life outwardly that I could. But I knew at the time that I could no longer play games. I was serious and didn't care who knew it! That part of the battle was won.
Several weeks later, after crying and praying for days, I was in the center bedroom of our house. My books were stored in a closet, and as I looked at my vast library of Puritan writers I said to myself, "What good are these books doing me? I'm still a lost sinner." Then I read Matthew 11:28 I cried, "Lord, You alone know that I'm coming, I'm laboring and have a terrible burden of sin, and I need rest. How can I take thy yoke? I don't even know what that yoke is. I have no strength, no faith. Lord, just send me on to Hell where I belong, for I cannot believe." It must be for that moment I was truly sincere, for that blessed voice which said "You are lost," now spoke again, and He said "I died for you." My first reaction was to pray for mercy, but I couldn't; instead, my heart just wanted to reach out to Him and thank God for deliverance in Christ. I began to praise Him for His great salvation. But I dared not tell anyone for several weeks, afraid that I might yet be deceived.
I was bursting inside to tell everyone what God had done for me. Finally I did so, and have been telling it ever since. The learning process never ceases, for the more I learn of myself the greater my Redeemer is to me. I still want to sing praises to my precious Lord Jesus Christ. I sought Christ and knew not how real He is, but now I know and understand that the desire and strength to seek Him was given to me by His sovereign mercy.
The first thing the Holy Spirit does is to open the heart of the sinner (Acts 16:14) and reveal what is inside, then when the sinner is broken before Him and comes to the end of his fleshly way, the Lord gives him faith to believe on Christ as Lord and Saviour. Now we see that others are awakened and desire to come to Christ. There are none beyond God's power to save, but He and He alone must do the work!
(Words of Richard J. Heigl, Sr. beloved brother, retired custodian of H.L. Bourgeois High School, pastor of a little group of the Lord's people, known as truth Baptist Church)
MERCY BESTOWED In the beginning, the Father elected The Son became a curse on the tree The Holy Spirit called and convicted, And Mercy said, "Let that sinner go free." Judgment hangs low o'er that guilty sinner, The Law cries, 'He's never, never kept me." No hope in sight, but cannot quit pleading, Then Mercy says, "Let that sinner go free." Blinded by sin and Satan our father, Doomed and damned forever to be A Substitute died on Calvary's mountain, Now Mercy says, "Let that sinner go free." Mercy Bestowed On A Lost, Guilty Sinner, When that sinner faces reality. When justice declares, "I'll keep him forever," But Mercy says, "Let that sinner go free." --Song by the late brother Edward Hale

'Cause baby tonight, the DJ got us falling in love again Yeah, baby tonight, the DJ got us falling in love again So dance, dance, like it's the last, last night of your life, life Gonna get you right 'Cause baby tonight, the DJ got us falling in love again
“Good evening everyone, I’m Ryan West from Hilridge Public Access and tonight we are coming to you live from the Hilridge High School senior prom” Ryan said, cameras flashing as people walked by. “I am standing outside the Cambridge Grand Hotel, the location of this year’s festivities and this year’s theme: Hollywood Nights” Ryan said “and it most certainly feels like a real Hollywood party”.
“I can’t believe this, you guys really go all out” Zoey said in disbelief as she and Kyle stepped out of the limo.
“Shall we?” he asked extending his arm to her.
“Please” she said as they stepped onto the red carpet.
“Up next we have prom king hopeful, Kyle Richardson, son of former Backstreet Boy, Kevin Richardson” Kyle and Zoey stopped and smiled for the cameras. “Kyle is the captain and star quarterback of the Hilridge High School Wildcat football team and is being escorted tonight by the lovely Zoey Montgomery” Ryan said into his microphone.
Derek grunted as he sat in the hotel’s penthouse suite watching the red carpet footage from a large flat screen TV. Damien stepped into a pair of shiny black shoes, a white tuxedo jacket slid over his shoulders. He straightened out his black bow tie, smiling at himself in the mirror of the hotel room.
"Ready son?" Derek asked.
"More than ever" Damien said.
“Next we have Harry Dorough, son of Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough and his date Cecily Fields, Harry is senior class president, Student Council president, science club president, newspaper photographer and is in the running to be the class Valedictorian" Ryan said. "Cecily is also on the school paper and part of the school's drama club" Ryan said as Harry and Cecily smiled for the cameras.
"And here we have Adam McLean, son of the Backstreet Boys' resident bad boy AJ McLean and his date Wendy Matthews, both Adam and Wendy are in the school's Drama club, Adam is also the cousin of Kyle Richardson's date Zoey."
“And finally, Neilson Carter, son of the Backstreet Boys’ main heartthrob Nick Carter and his date, longtime girlfriend and prom queen nominee Natalie Cappel” Ryan said into his microphone. Natalie then waved Bradley over as he strolled down the red carpet “And joining them apparently going stag tonight, Bradley J. Littrell son of Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell, Bradley is also serving as the prom’s DJ tonight and competing against Kyle for the prom king title.”
They then stepped into the lobby of the hotel and walked towards the ballroom.
“Wow this place looks pretty good” Neilson said as he and Natalie walked into the ballroom.
“It better, we spent all afternoon getting it ready” Natalie said to him.
"Wow, this looks amazing" Zoey said looking around as she and Kyle walked in the ballroom together, Adam following closely behind them.
"Are you okay?" Wendy asked Adam as they followed behind Kyle and Zoey.
"Huh? Oh yeah, sorry...just making sure Kyle keeps his hands off my cousin" he said to her.
"Hey I hope you don't mind I brought my camera, Mr. Carson asked me to take a few candid’s" Harry said to Cecily as they came into the ballroom.
“Oh no problem, he actually asked me too" she said pulling a small digital camera from her purse, they smiled at each other.
The spotlight came on as principal Wexler stepped up on stage “Hello everyone” he said into a microphone “And welcome to the Hilridge High School senior prom” he said as everyone clapped “I’d like to thank the Cambridge Grand Hotel for letting us use the ballroom and also our very own prom committee for their wonderful decorations and for making this a night I’m sure none of you will forget, and of course the class of 2010’s very own Bradley J. Littrell for providing the music” the principal said as the spotlight shone on Bradley. “alright let the prom begin, have fun everyone” he said before the music came on and he stepped down.
"Hey, DJ Bradley J." Natalie said approaching him.
"Hey what are you guys doing up here?" Bradley asked.
"Brought you a drink" Neilson said handing him a glass of punch.
"Nat I forgot to tell you, you look amazing tonight" Bradley said to her.
"Aww thank you" she said to him.
"Amazing enough to be prom queen?" Neilson asked.
"Even more amazing than that" Bradley said.
"Well you certainly like prom king material to me too" she said to him. She put her arms around both of them "I can't believe this is it" she said sadly.
"Yeah" Bradley said "High school's over" he said as they looked around.
"And we made it out alive" Neilson said.
"Barely" Bradley said to him.
"No need to bring that all up tonight" Natalie said to them "Damien and his psycho father are dead and gone, you guys won" she said to them.
"To Damien and Derek Winchester, may they rest in hell" Bradley said raising his glass.
Damien watched them all clink their glasses together "That's what you think" he said to himself.

2023: The Year in Green's Party
This was a historic year for my blog as it turned 10! In Jan. 2013 I began this blog as a way to share my thoughts on pop culture and since then I've gotten to do things I never even imagined would be possible: interviewing filmmakers, actors, musicians, authors and more; reviewing movies, music, concerts, books, and theater; covering conventions and film festivals; and connecting with fans who also have their hands on the pulse of pop culture at the moment and it's history. This was hands down one of my best years yet! Here are just a few of the highlights:
Tumblr media
the many faces of Green's Party
Retweets and social media: Tom Petty's website included a pull quote from my Nov. 2022 album review of Live at the Fillmore 1997 on their website page for the album; Ondi Timoner and her doc Last Flight Home shared my interview with her on Twitter; the Video Archives Podcast liked and shared my Best Podcasts of 2022 list on Twitter; Cadence13 and David Spade of the Fly on the Wall podcast liked my Best Podcasts of 2022 lists on Twitter; TV Guidance Counselor host Ken Reid liked and shared my Best Podcasts of 2022 list on Twitter; Completely Conspicuous host Jay Kumar liked my Best Podcasts of 2022 list on Twitter; U2 Daily Tour News shared my U2 movie review and album review on their daily newsletter and on Twitter; the Video Archives Podcast liked and retweeted my Quentin Tarantino birthday post; Andy Summers shared my concert review on his social media; the Chasing Chasing Amy team shared my movie review on Twitter; X (the band) shared my concert review on their Facebook; the There Was No Alternative team shared my interview with author Jeff Gomez on their Facebook; and Tremolo Productions liked and retweeted my Congrats to them on 20 Feet From Stardom being added to the National Film Registry on Twitter.

It was a sad year for Gen X: in May MTV News announced they were ceasing operations; and there was also the passing of Andy Rourke of The Smiths, Sinead O'Connor, and Paul Reubens, all staples of the 80s and 90s :(
The Police never ended: It's as if I got to see a Police reunion this year because I got to cover guitarist Andy Summers' concert in July, singer / bassist Sting's concert in September, and while I didn't see drummer Stewart Copeland live, I did get to cover his book The Police Diaries in October!
Tough year for physical media fans like me between Netflix ending it's DVD by mail service and Best Buy announcing they're going to stop selling DVDs. Time to go to my local library more often for DVDs and blu-rays!
