The 90's of Prince presented us with the problems the superstars of the previous eras had despite the fact most of them had many favourable circumstances then. Still, there were some cases, such as The Beach Boys, which made you sigh then. The group I mentioned, for instance, had a reputation, though the latter was built on their past. Stars & Stripes Vol. 1 showed that and, to be honest, they did have a correct idea, i.e. they covered their own hits with some modern country singers. However, they botched this principle immensely, because the entire thing feels like a fan karaoke at some times. Sure, there are some collaborations, such as the piece you hear on the link, where you can trace the best possible version of Stars & Stripes Vol. 1. Sadly, even these settled for good enough.

M3GAN (15): The moral is, 'always install an off switch'.
#onemannsmovies review of "M3GAN" (2023). #M3GAN. A fun sci-fi comedy/thriller that's doing a storm at the box office. Recommended. 4/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “M3GAN” (2023). The cinema has had no end of doll-like things like M3GAN to creep us out over the years. In my youth, it was a young Anthony Hopkin’s ventriloquist dummy in “Magic”. But we’ve also had “Chucky”, the antique doll “Annabelle” and that wretched clown under the bed in “Poltergeist“! Add a bit more computer gadgetry and you get Yul Brunner’s killer…

[Main image description: A redraw of a scene from Bee and Puppycat, with Jon holding up Garfield, a happy look on Jon's face. Garfield's back is to the viewer and he is wearing a teal jacket with a purple collar and big pink shoulder bows. The back of the jacket reads "2024 January" across two ribbon banners, with a picture of Pooky the bear's face between the ribbons.]
Short playlist for one of those long-feeling months. The description I put on the playlist was "aiming for a decent start" and that's the vibe. We got this! Chase and I have been talking about why Nick Lutsko's music always seems to hit for us, beyond him being very good at working skeletons into things and also using puppets, and it has come down to a specific realist-pessimism in tone that does not deny hope or optimism.
Related media to some of the songs:
This month's playlist cover is inspired by the video for 'cliché - revisited' by mxmtoon, which features Bee and Puppycat themselves.
'Swinging On A Star' is featured (as sung by Bruce Willis and Danny Aiello) in the 1991 film Hudson Hawk, which is a charming film if one for a very specific audience.
"Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too" is one of two Black Mirror episodes I've seen and I remain forever fond of it, probably due to the particular approach to the Nine Inch Nails covers.
The Devil and Daniel Johnston is a great doc, available on Archive dot org. His music has been threaded through a lot of my adult life.
Anyway here's a link to January's playlist on Spotify, with the track list below the cut.

...September 17, 1903 ~~
Remembering DOLORES COSTELLO today on her birthday 🖤
A child of two actors, she first appeared on film in the 1909 version of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. Costello was eventually nicknamed "The Goddess of the Silent Screen", for her great beauty.
She appeared in approximately 60 films, both silent and sound, including a handful of Pre-Code movies.
Costello modeled in New York in the late 1910's thru the early 1920's, posing for the major photographers of the day.
Costello was included in the star-studded WAMPAS Baby Star Class of 1926, alongside of Joan Crawford, Dolores del Rio, Fay Wray, Janet Gaynor and Mary Brian. That same year, she met John Barrymore on the set of "The Sea Beast", and the two of them married within two years. She retired after two final movies in the early 1940's, devoting time to her family, and to operating an avocado ranch.
Costello is the grandmother of actress Drew Barrymore.
Dolores Costello passed away in Southern California in 1979 at age 75.

Love songs that rock
Love songs that rock Rock can have different meanings. As long as it's not too tender or soft. For example, "Unchained Melody" is a great love song, but it certainly does not rock. "How Deep is Your Love" is dope, but it doesn't really rock. "More Than Words" is great, but still, not the kind of song I'm looking for. "Can't Buy Me Love" does it rock? Technically maybe, but not quite heavy enough. "Skinny Love" by Bon Iver .... not quite heavy enough. "True Love Will Find You in the End" by Daniel Johnston ... not quite heavy enough. And so on. Hopefully no low effort. Don't just list a love song that rocks, just because it exists. List it if it means something to you. Here's some of my favs -H.I.M. - just about anythingPantera - This LoveThe Brian Jonestown Massacre - It Girl, Open Heart SurgeryType O Negative - Black No. 1Danzig - SistinasPixies - GiganticPlacebo - Every you, every meCure - Lovesong, Friday I'm in Love, Just Like HeavenR.E.M. - The One I LoveSmashing Pumpkins - Ava AdoreTindersticks - Put Your Love In MeThe White Stripes - Fell In Love With A GirlDeftones - LoversBauhaus - Passion of LoversDavid Bowie - Modern LoveThe Doors - Love Me Two Times, Light my FireLed Zeppelin - Whole Lotta LoveFoo Fighters - OverlongPatti Smith - Because The NightGuns N' Roses - November RainElvis - Marie's the Name, Burning LoveQueen - Good Old-Fashioned Lover BoySyd Barrett - Love SongVan Morrison - Moondance, Brown Eyed GirlJimmy Hendrix - Hey JoeRitual Howls - Love CutsDaft Punk - Make LoveThe Prodigy - Your LoveSmiths - How Soon is Now?Coil - Love's Secret DomainKerli - Army of LoveMother Love Bone - StargazerNirvana - Love Buzz, Molly's Lips, Heart Shaped-Box, About A Girl Pearl Jam - State Of Love And TrustStone Temple Pilots - Interstate Love SongFuture Bible Heroes - Memories of LoveThe Ramones - Today Your Love, Tomorrow the WorldCults - AbductedDum Dum Girls - Lord Knows, Bedroom EyesThe Contours - Do You Love MeMarilyn Manson - Tainted LoveDavid Lynch - Ghost of LoveThe Jesus And Mary Chain - Come OnUncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Evil LoveDepeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence, Sweetest Perfection, Precious, Strangelove, Higher LoveHeart - Magic Man, Crazy on YouThe Zombies - She's not there, Time of the SeasonWolfsheim - Find You're HereMareux - The Perfect GirlSeal - Kiss From a RoseEverything But The Girl - MissingDead Milkmen - Punk Rock GirlRed Hot Chili Peppers - Suck My KissLebanon Hanover - Kiss Me Until My Lips Fall OffBlue Öyster Cult - Burnin' for youOld 97's- TimebombChris Isaak - Wicked GameCowboy Junkies - Sweet JaneBillie Eilish - Ocean EyesChris Brown - Under The InfluenceRupert Holmes - Escape (The Piña Colada Song)The Weeknd - Save Your TearsAllen Toussaint - Soul SisterAl Green - Love and HappinessCharlotte Day Wilson - WorkBeck - RamonaKavinsky & Lovefoxxx - NightcallLabyrinth Ear - Navy LightWhen in Rome - Promise Submitted April 25, 2024 at 01:39AM by trifeone https://ift.tt/DhVaWKg via /r/Music

There are two kinds of horror fans in this world. There are the ones who see a spooky looking doll and hide their eyes in terror. Then there are those who see a little killer moppet with its chubby cheeks and little rubber hands and think this is kind of ridiculous.
I tend to be in the second camp.
M3GAN has been getting comparisons to the Child’s Play movies. And it is sort of like Child’s Play, except mostly it’s like the 2019 reboot of that franchise (you know, the one that everyone – particularly fans of the series – hated).
The title character in M3GAN is not a doll, exactly. Not like traditional spooky doll films like Annabelle, Trilogy of Terror and the original Child’s Play movies. M3GAN is more of a robot which is being marketed as a toy, just like Chucky in the Child’s Play reboot (M3GAN stands for “Model 3 Generative ANdroid – they can’t even do initials right, that should be M3GA.)
And while M3GAN is better than the Chucky reboot, it’s not really very good. However, it is stupid, but fun, which is all that many horror films aim for.
The thing is, though, M3GAN seems to be trying to aim higher. It makes some half-hearted explorations of grief, absentee parenting, and the dangers of AI, but mostly it’s about a little killer robot gone rogue. It’s a storyline variation which has been done hundreds of times now and M3GAN adds little to the canon.
There have been films about computers (and a robot is basically a variation of a computer) advancing beyond the programming that was intended even farther back than 2001: A Space Odyssey over 50 years ago. At least that movie, as weird as it sometimes got, had some deep ideas on the subject. Granted, it’s probably not fair to compare a silly horror film with a serious science fiction classic, but you get the point.
At least M3GAN, at like 4 feet tall is not quite as ridiculous a killer as a foot-tall Chucky, but still seeing this robot who weighs less than 100 pounds pummeling people twice her size seems a little silly.
I’m also not sure I totally buy that M3GAN could come to be every girl’s favorite new toy. Yes, it’s a technological marvel, but honestly, it’s kind of spooky, and not even when it is killing people, just in general. I could see little girls waking up under M3GAN’s glassy gaze and getting the crap scared out of them.
But okay, grading M3GAN on the level that it is made on, it’s not bad. It’s sometimes funny, sometimes intelligent, and sometimes a bit scary. So how you react to the film will probably pretty much depend on your feelings about homicidal dolls.

History of the Pink Triangle
Leading off from the original pride flag - the next use of the colour pink in LGBTQ history is the Silence=Death project in the late 1980′s.  The history of the Pink Triangle starts in WWII with the symbol being used by SS members in Nazi concentration camps to identify homosexual inmates. The symbol of a facing down triangle was sewn onto their uniforms.
Tumblr media
“The number of deaths among homosexuals was thus proportionately very high, higher than in most other groups of inmates. According to one investigation the death rate in the camps was roughly 60 percent.36 The comparatively small chance that the inmates with the pink triangle had to leave the concentration camp alive was related to the fact that they were among the lowest groups in the camp hierarchy observed by the SS.”  Wolfgang Röll MA (1996) Homosexual Inmates in the Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Journal of Homosexuality, 31:4, 1-28, DOI: 10.1300/J082v31n04_01
In 1987 a group of activists reclaimed the Pink Triangle, reflecting it so it now pointed upwards and used it as the main symbol of the Silence=Death project - in the middle of the AIDS crisis, which the governments doing nothing but labeling the epidemic as a “gay disease”, Avram Finkelstein along with Brian Howard, Oliver Johnston, Charles Kreloff, Chris Lione, and Jorge Socarrás started the project as a way of showing support and consciousness raising.  The project quickly became political and the Silence=Death poster became a global symbol for LGBT support during the AIDS crisis.
