Explaining One of VTMB Paintings (part 17)
Tumblr media
The Sisters, oil on canvas (Circa 1890) by Percy Harland-Fisher
Percy Harland-Fisher (1867-1944) was a British painter born in Dulwich, London, UK the youngest of three brothers who all attended the Dulwich Collage which at the time was known for its connections to the art world of the time. He presented artistic paintings at the Royal Academy starting at age 17. As with many artists he painted subjects of interest though tailored to what would sell. This included paintings depicting domestic scenes of the Romany families that lived on the local common. He also had a deep love of animals which often appeared in his more formal portraits. His paintings of children were particularly popular. Most of his paintings are of idilic, simple moments of domestic life, often of subjects from the rural or lower middle class.[1]
In the painting a pair of young sisters in night gowns are opening a wood door to let a flock of all white morning doves in during the day. Two of the doves that face the girls have their tail feathers spread. I was unable to find any online analysis of this piece or of the meaning behind the doves act of flailing their tails. So I'm not sure if the doves are trying to impress the girls in a sign of mating behavior with the girls looking down in amusement on the birds for their foolishness or ifs the two doves trying to assert dominance over each other other in an attempt to determine a pecking order and to impress the rest of the doves just outside the door while girls are watching as outsiders in amusement. There is some importance to the doves displays as they are the only two doves fully in the fore ground, with their light feathers contrasting to the dark woods and are what the two girls are looking at. And while Percy Harland Fisher painting idyllic scenes did not mean that they were all just meant to be surface value beauty devoid of meaning or commentary. Even choosing to paint Romany families ( who at the time were referred to as Gypsies and still to this day face discrimination) and where with the same level of care that he applied to his own family members was a subtle but impactful choice. (see Below)

Gertrude Fisher by The Lake. Pastel (c1911) by Percy Harland-Fisher
"Gertrude Fisher was Percy’s younger sister. She lived with Percy prior to his marriage to Catherine Hudson at The Knightons in Gordon Road. The Fisher family was a close knit family."[1]

Gypsy child (also known as Gypsy Girl or Temptation) Oil on Canvas. (c1930) by Percy Harland-Fisher
"The gypsy community living on the local common were a favourite subject for Fisher. Many of the paintings left in the family’s possession after his death are sketches, watercolours and drawings of the local gypsy community. Although the painting is apparently a young Romany girl, when the museum first acquired the painting a local lady made contact to explain that her sister was the sitter for the picture. She was a Camberley school girl whose look had caught the artist’s eye. She recalled that her sister became bored while sitting for the picture and began picking at the apple in her hands. Mrs Fisher was called into the studio to tell stories to distract her." [1] The alternate title of Temptation is a reference to the apple the girl is holding and the story of Adam and Eve.

Why is Ginger Vadodara Considered one of the Best Budget Hotels in Vadodara RCR?
Vadodara, which was once known as Baroda, is located on the banks of the Vishwamitri River (which still retains over 200 crocodiles). It is highly recognised as both a cultural and an industrial center. The city was called from an interesting folklore and historical anecdote: Vad means Banyan tree in the native tongue, and Vadodara was densely forested. The name was supposedly changed to Baroda by the British to make it easier to pronounce. In 1974, it was called Vadodara. By 1895, Baroda had an underground drainage network, making it one of India's earliest well-planned towns. In 1906, Maharaja Sayajirao III became the first Indian ruler to institute obligatory and free primary education. Maharaja Pratap Singh Gaekwad of Baroda State was once regarded as the world's eighth richest man. The biggest surprise for me was learning that the Nazarbaug Palace, which was completed in 1871, had been demolished and replaced by a retail mall. It was a magnificent edifice that also functioned as Gaekwad's residence. Vadodara's HistoryFrom 1721 to 1947, Vadodara was the royal residence of the Gaekwads. The Gaekwad rule of Vadodara began in 1721, when the Marathas defeated Mughal authority of the city. The Gaekwads were granted the land as a fief by Peshwa Bajirao I. The Peshwas were the Maratha Empire's reigning rulers. By the beginning of the nineteenth century, the Maratha Empire had crumbled and Baroda State had been formed. In exchange for recognising British suzerainty, the British recognised the Gaekwad kings' independence from the Maratha Empire. Vadodara's Must-See Attractions Laxmi Vilas Palace is the luxurious residence of the Rulers of Baroda, built in the Indo-Saracenic architectural style. It is nestled among a large green field and has a golf course with colourful birds strutting around. It was commissioned by Maharaja Sayaji Rao III in 1878 as his house, and it took 12 years to construct. Major Charles Mant was the architect in charge of designing it. Museum of Maharaja Fateh SinghThe private art and artefact collection of the Gaekwad dynasty is housed in the Maharaja Fateh Singh Musem. The Maharajas amassed an impressive collection of Japanese, Indian, Chinese, and European art. It is close to Laxmi Vilas Palace and should be paired with a visit to the Palace. You must be considering Vadodara as your next vacation location because there is so much to see and discover there, and you will need to stay in a hotel room. What could be more satisfying than finding a place within your budget, especially in a costly city like Vadodara? However, how many individuals know where to find such hotels near Vadodara Airport? You can't be certain of others, but you most likely can.The Ginger Vadodara hotel will meet all of your requirements. 📚 :-)
So, I've shared a great many story ideas, how about something a bit different now? I've dreamt about a 21st century stage adaption of Dearest Enemy (1925) for a long time (well, ever since @wmhowe introduced me to this joyful musical last year). I've posted about it before, but to give a quick summary, the musical is loosely based on true events when during the American Revolutionary War, a woman called Mary Lindley Murray who is said to have held up British General William Howe long enough at her residence to allow American forces to escape following their defeat in the action at Kip's Bay. In the musical, Mrs. Murray, her daughter, and above all, her Irish niece Betsy Burke and their friends decide to break the dull monotony of their lives as well-to-do ladies during wartime characterised by waiting for their male relatives, friends and love interests to come home from fighting with the Continental Army and come up with a plan to do their bit for the war effort. For one night, they're going to entertain General Howe's officers, thus help the American forces under General Putnam escape and, as an added bonus, get a night of partying and fun out of it all on the side. However, things don't go as planned as both both Jane Murray and her cousin Betsey genuinely fall in love with two dashing young redcoats, Governor Tryon's son Harry and Sir John Copeland. Betsy and Sir John are both as stubborn as they are proud and have many wonderful moments of fighting over being in love while openly disagreeing on politics. Sir John is later captured when a plan hatched by Betsy to let the Americans escape is set into motion, but all's well that ends well when George Washington himself comes to thank the Murray women and brings a special "gift" for Betsy: Sir John. Sadly, Dearest Enemy has not been performed on stage in the 21st century so far, and I would really love to see that changed. I am particularly fascinated by the 18th century setting coupled with 1920s music with a plethora of historical Easter eggs; the (sadly cut) number Girls Don't Tempt Me, sung by General Clinton, in its title alone hilariously accurately captures Clinton's very monogamous intentions towards a certain lady of the time; there's a big twist regarding the name of one of the main characters (more on that later) and Cheerio, a song about leaving Britain and going to war, sung by General Howe, eerily echoes WW1, as well as the similar, and documented worry of the latter's mother upon William going to war once again. If I were in charge of designing an adaption, I would love to have a revolving stage to allow for quick changes between different settings, one of which is the Murray house, which is shown in an open cross section, and the other an idyllic pastoral scene. The women's costumes are slightly exaggerated takes on the fashions of the 1770s, the men are all in contemporary uniforms. Big hair (wigs for everyone!), lots of bling and powder. Only Betsy is somewhat differently dressed than the others; she gets a 1920s robe de style, which are somewhat reminiscent of and deliberately play with evoking a slight semblance to 18th century gowns through their cut and sometimes decoration, and her hair is styled in water waves. Those sartorial differences are however never addressed by anybody.
Tumblr media
Robe de style c. 1923, FIDM musem.
When the women anounce they're organising a ball, the costumes change; thanks to the modern marvels of zippers, push-buttons and velcro, the 18th century ladies transform into 1920s flappers.
Tumblr media
Evening gown, c. 1925-28, Chertsey Museum; something I could picture Betsey wearing.
While the women change, the men remain in their 1770s attire. After the ball, the grand escape of American troops and Sir John's capture, Betsy is shown sitting at a table in the Murray residence, on which a grammophone sits, faintly playing Betsy and Sir John's recurring number Here In My Arms (bonus points if it's this original 1920s recording!).
When Washington brings Betsy her "gift", Sir John has transformed as well, and now wears 1920s mess dress.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Portrait of John Graves Simcoe, early 1770s, Riverbrink Art Museum; mess dress of a British officer of the Leicestershire Regiment, dated 1920, via Pinterest.
For some additional twists, and because I think that old plays can be adapted to pose new questions or challenge contemporary audiences by addressing contemporary issues, the name "Betsy Burke" was the alias used by Charles Edward Stuart on his flight to the Isle of Skye, disguised as a maid to Lady Flora MacDonald. Given the choice of this particular moniker, I am convinced it's hardly a coincidence. Why not use this piece of information to re-imagine Betsy as either trans or maybe a drag queen? I would be very excited to see such an interpretation, although I don't think that I'd be qualified of planning it beyond the basic idea.
I think I've been gushing for long enough now- I am sure I have only barely scratched the surface of how one could go about a modern adaption! :)

Oh I'm interested to hear ab the patrick and h or l analogy you mentioned!
!! spoilers ahead for my policeman !!
well! of course i was reading it with harry in mind, especially in the beginning. at first i was looking for signs of harry in tom, while it was patrick who really struck that chord. i ended up seeing harry in both tom and patrick, while also seeing a lot of louis in patrick.
tom is instantly depicted as someone strong and charismatic by marion, and then patrick's first impression of tom is that he's friendly and trusting/naive - a side he clearly only shows patrick, an older (and smarter) man. both impressions definitely reminded me of harry.
here’s tom and patrick’s first meeting, from patrick’s pov:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
patrick is an artist, works in a musem, and is a weathered gay, so to speak. he knows the ins and outs of the community (and, most importantly, how to survive in that late 50s british climate) and is comfortable about who he is: he has accepted that he is gay and prefers to remain "single" to being married to a woman. the love of his life before meeting tom was also a married man, which was very common then, but that is a step he never undertook.
here’s what he writes about his mother, whose conversation he once overheard, to illustrate how easy-going he is about his sexuality:
Tumblr media
what especially reminded me of louis, then, was patrick's easy confidence and assurance in who he was, which he could use in his advantage to seduce/build up a relationship with tom. he knew he had to accept marion as a reality in tom's life in order for tom to thrive and their relationship to have the best chance with all the limitations they have (bc tom was a policeman put under pressure by his chief to marry, and it was also very illegal to be gay, or a "sexual invert" as they used to call it). louis knows that, for now, he needs to play the game as long as he needs to in order to get the best chance at success in life and (open) love (or at least that's definitely how i see him and how he has handled the past years).
Tumblr media
where patrick reminded me of harry was in his artistic, sensitive and romantic streaks (which are qualities not ascribed to tom at all). patrick writes emphatically in his journal about his lover, his policeman, who he compares to greek statues and the like. how he speaks in general is artful, really. he's also an absolute romantic, taking his lover to venice, buying him gifts, treating him to everything (which is sth louis and harry both have obviously). harry is obviously incredibly romantic in his writing and how he uses words in every way. he’s cryptic and symbolic in his lyrics, but i bet a diary entry of his looks very similar to something patrick would write. and in the way that patrick is extremely kind and considerate, we all know harry is too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
patrick also has a tOn of anxiety, always describing how his heartbeat gets irregular whenever something happens that excites or upsets him (“DUM-de, goes my heart”), which is something i also align with harry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and yk... what was definitely interesting making these comparisons were the physical descriptions (although the height difference between h and l is not as dramatic as sometimes believed): tom is broad, tall, strong, has curly hair, and patrick is smaller, sharper. again, here patrick was also like harry, in terms of being a lot more conscious of fashion and appreciative of women's clothing and makeup.
both men in the novel have blue eyes, and there’s something about the way marion first describes tom’s eyes that just....... stuck with me
Tumblr media
oh and just this other lil tidbit
Tumblr media
roughly: “love is a bird that can’t be tamed”..............
