Cyclone Mocha Aftermath: UK Increases Support for Vulnerable Populations

  This new UK support will provide Rohingya communities with health care, shelter, and basic site management support. It will also strengthen safeguarding systems for Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox’s Bazar. Acting British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Matt Cannell, announced this additional funding during a visit to the Rohingya camps and host communities in Cox’s Bazar in the aftermath of cyclone Mocha. Implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), this new UK support responds to ongoing needs in the Rohingya camps. It will help refugees to rebuild their shelters following the largescale fire in Camp 11 in March 2023, which destroyed 2,800 shelters; and Cyclone Mocha in May, which has reportedly affected 37,000 Rohingya refugees.

The UK remains committed to supporting the Government of Bangladesh to find a sustainable solution to this crisis and is providing vital humanitarian support.”   IOM Bangladesh’s Chief of Mission Abdusattor Esoev said: “This support comes at a critical time when Rohingya refugees and the host communities in Cox’s Bazar are facing immense challenges due to recent disasters, and ongoing humanitarian needs, especially in the aftermath of the devastating fire and Cyclone Mocha. “With the support of the UK, we will be able to provide essential healthcare, shelter, site management support, and strengthen safeguarding systems for those affected. UK Announces Three More Flights For Evacuation

This was contained in a statement released by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Cattriona Laing at the weekend. She said the flights will take place in three batches, beginning May 29, 2020. “More than 1,700 British travellers have already returned to the UK on special charter flights in April and May – from Lagos and Abuja.”

There will also be a separate internal charter flight to convey British travellers from Port Harcourt to Abuja to join the Abuja flight to London on June 6. Student becomes British High Commissioner to India for a day

Esha Bahal, a student of Political Science in a Noida college, became out to be British High Commissioner to India for 24 hours.

To mark the International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated on October 11, the British High Commission sorted out an competition for ladies aged 18 to 23 to become the British High Commissioner to India for a day. To enter, the competitors submitted a short video presentation on the topic "What does gender equality mean to you?" A sum of 58 students from the nation over submitted their videos. The entry was from Ms Bahal, she wants to become social entrepreneur after completing finishing her higher studies in public policy and law. Ms Bahal said: "Acting as British High Commissioner for a day has been an awesome experience. I've learned about the UK-India relations - and had the chance to highlight the significance of gender equality and inclusivity, issues which are of great importance significance to me."
