More than 35 years ago, I learned about the Candelaria Festival where as many as 50k dancers plus 15k musicians meet to celebrate Mamita Candelaria / Pachamama for several days (and weeks!) I just knew, in my heart, I had to be a part of it someday. Unfortunately, after migrating far away, it only seemed like a dream. I'm still in awe I was able to participate after all...

As a folkloric dancer and culture bearer, it was important to me to be able to do so as a Caporal/Machita in particular for the message of barrier-breaking we carry by performing a dance that was traditionally only allowed to men; and also for being Afro-Peruvian in its roots. I'm so glad I chose this dance out of the 350+ that Puno offers. It meant a lot to my spirit.

As a disabled 40+ year old, I had to train for a year and a half to be able to dance for several days, compete in the stadium (and get 2nd place!), and then dance again the very next day for 4.5 hours nonstop at 12.5k feet above sea level during the public Parade, which happened to be on my 43rd birthday! This was no easy feat, and it will be an experience I will never forget. My heart grew so much this day!! (Probably my lungs too ha!)
