I know it can feel like there's never an end to the chaos-- but remember that there are pockets of joy and love there in this life too, and however you need to cope with your daily struggles, don't feel bad in taking solace in that. Enjoy the little things, no matter how small. Rest up lovelies, breathe in, breathe out, drink some water, and keep going. Miners win first ever game in Florida, defeats FIU, 27-14

MIAMI, Fla. – UTEP jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked as the Miners (2-5, 1-2 Conference USA) defeated FIU (3-4, 0-4 CUSA) 27-14 for their first conference win of the season in FIU Football Stadium on Wednesday night on ESPN2

Cade McConnell made his first career start under center, throwing for 262 yards on 11-of-17 passing and two touchdown passes.

But Kelly Akharaiyi dazzled the night with a career-high 223 yards on eight receptions and was on the other end of those McConnell TD tosses. Akharaiyi’s 200+ receiving game was the first for a Miner since 2012, while his total is tied for fifth most in school history. 

Praise Amaewhule also highlighted the night by breaking the school’s all-time sack record during the third quarter when he brought down FIU QB Keyone Jenkins. Amaewhule added a second sack on the night while also forcing a fumble late in the game to essentially seal the victory.

Overall, the UTEP defense tallied a season-high 6.0 sacks led by Maurice Westmoreland’s career-high 2.5 QB takedowns. Westmoreland also added a career-high six tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.

The defense also held the Panthers to 363 yards and allowing only 2-of-11 on third-down conversions. The “D” forced two turnovers, while the offense played mistake-free football.

“We did the things we need to do right and we didn’t make the big mistakes, we made [FIU] make the big mistakes,” UTEP Head Coach Dana Dimel said. “We jumped on them early and did a good job with that and held on to the football. We didn’t have any unforced errors to give opportunities to come back. Of course, the defense played so well and so many guys did some really good things.”

Tyler Williams led the way with nine tackles, while James Neal was credited with eight stops and recovered a fumble late in the game.

UTEP registered 441 yards of total offense, as the rushing attack gained 139 led by Torrance Burgess Jr.’s 86 yards on 20 carries. Deion Hankins rushed for 62 yards.

UTEP got on the board first with aggressive play from the offensive line. The Miners took the opening possession 75 yards on 10 plays that resulted in the Hankins one-yard touchdown rush that took six minutes off the clock. Hankins rushed for 37 yards on seven carries (5.3 avg.) and McConnell went 2-of-2 for 22 yards on the drive.

UTEP would really turn it up scoring two more touchdowns in a span of 58 seconds to jump out to a 21-0 lead.

The Miners increased the lead to 14-0 after the defense forced FIU to punt. UTEP only needed 10 seconds to get on the board for a second time as Akharaiyi reeled in a career-long 80-yard touchdown reception from McConnell.

Following another defensive stop by the Orange and Blue, UTEP used only three plays on its third possession that resulted in an Akharaiyi 23-yard touchdown reception. Jeremiah Ballard’s career-long 50-yard reception to the FIU 22 from McConnell to set up score.

Akharaiyi tallied 155 receiving yards on five receptions in the first half of action.

Following the fireworks show in the first, the Miners were forced to punt on back-to-back possessions with the latter being a three-and-out. The Panthers took advantage and took a drive 94 yards on nine plays that was capped by a Kejon Owens 11-yard touchdown. He was held up by Tyrice Knight before breaking away for the score to make the count 21-7 with just over six minutes left in the half.

Buzz Flabiano put the Miners up 17 points (24-7) after hitting a career-long 37-yard field with 1:03 left in the half. The Miners drove the ball 54 yards on 10 plays. All 10 plays were rushing attempts led by Burgess Jr. runs of 29 yards and 14 yards. He accounted for 51 yards on seven carries.

FIU opened the second half a drove the ball 84 yards on eight plays capped by Jenkins one-yard scoring run to get within 10 points (24-14) with 10:28 left in the third quarter.

The Panthers caught the Miners off guard with a successful onside kick following the touchdown and took possession at the FIU 48. But the UTEP defense held their position and stopped FIU after going for it on a four-and-6 play in which Knight bottled up the runner, coming up three yards short of the first down.

Torey Richardson came up with a big interception – his first of 2023 and second career pick – that gave the Miners possession at their own 25. The drive was highlighted by a McConnell to Akharaiyi deep ball that was batted around before coming down with a 44-yard reception to the FIU 16. The drive ended with a Flabiano 20-yard field goal make to put the Miners up 27-14 with just over five minutes left in the game.

UTEP has won its last two games in the eastern time zone after winning at Charlotte last season. 

UP NEXT

UTEP will return to the 915 and host longtime rival and new CUSA foe NM State on Wednesday, Oct. 18. UTEP and NM State will face each other as conference opponents for the first time in 62 years when both programs were members of the Border Conference. The Miners and Aggies will kick off at 7 p.m. MT and will be nationally televised on ESPN2

George Washington Biography

George Washington, the most well-known individual in American heritage, was born on Feb 22, 1732, in his father's home at Pope's Creek of Westmoreland County, Virginia. His father, Augustine, had been a third-generation English colonist and was well-known among Virginia's gentry's middle classes. He was also three times married.

He had 2 sons, Lawrence & Augustine Jr., in the years 1718 & 1720, before the loss of his 1st wife, Jane Butler Washington, in 1728. A year later Augustine wedded Mary Ball (1709-1789) around 1731, George was born.

There were five more children, Samuel, Charles, John Augustine, & Mildred. The Washington family relocated into Augustine, Sr. Plantation on Little Hunting Creek in the early 1730s from Westmoreland County. They stayed there until they moved to a house across from Fredericksburg on the Rappahannock River.

Career

George Washington became renowned as the "Father of his country," even though he lost his father when he was a little child. George Washington's half-brothers got the majority of Augustine Washington's money after his death in 1743, while George was aged eleven. George's Westmoreland County estate was passed down to Augustine, Jr. Lawrence also bought the Little Hunting Creek estate, which he later renamed Mount Vernon following Admiral Edward Vernon, a general he had previously fought under in the War of Jenkins' Ear.

The Rappahannock River estate that George had shared with their siblings and mother had been passed down to him, but this was not sufficient to keep him in the middle class of the Virginia aristocracy. Lawrence, George's half-brother, had suggested that George consider joining the British navy as a career, but his mother had opposed the idea. As a colonial population quickly intruded just on Shenandoah Valley and some other areas of western Virginia, he instead got training to become a property surveyor, a profession of considerable significance in Virginia.

Washington's career as a surveyor benefited from Lawrence's patronage, particularly that of the wealthy Fairfax family of Belvoir, who've been Lawrence's neighbors and in-laws. Following his appointment as the huge Northern Neck property's surveyor in 1748, Washington was given the position of surveyor for Culpeper County by Lord Fairfax.

Washington possessed all of the means required for an aspiring white Virginian to achieve in the 18th century due to his lucrative employment as a surveyor. He gained knowledge of the colony's wilderness, as well as careful thought patterns and outdoor survival skills. As a result of his respect for justice, truthfulness, & dependability, he gained the trust of the local elite. Washington gained independence along with the advantages of having his dreams come true.

An important talent in colonial America, when the property was linked with power, he gained first-hand knowledge of successful land speculation while also earning sizable fees for surveying.

When he accompanied Lawrence to Barbados in 1751, the younger Washington amassed almost as many acres of profitable property in the Shenandoah than his half-brother had been at Mount Vernon.

Conflict & Politics

Beginning in 1758, when he was chosen to represent Frederick County there in the Virginia House of Burgesses, Washington served there in the colonial Assembly for over sixteen years. Landowners in Fairfax County afterward chose to elect him. From 1760 to 1774, he presided as a judge of the Fairfax County court in Alexandria.

After Governor Dunmore dissolved the Assembly in 1774 and resolved to forge a nonimportation contract, Washington convened with other furious Burgesses at Williamsburg's Raleigh Tavern. He was selected by the 1st Virginia Convention to represent them at the 1st Continental Congress, which authorized Virginia's proposal for economic revenge against the home country, in the same year.

A month later a shooting conflict erupted at Lexington & Concord, Massachusetts, Washington decided to return to Philadelphia to take his place in the 2nd Continental Congress. He did so in May 1775. In recognition of Washington's military prowess and political dependability, Congress unanimously selected him as its commander-in-chief when it accepted the New England militia force besieging the British Army throughout Boston in June 1775. Despite the fact that Martha visited Cambridge around December and spent a significant amount of the war fighting beside her husband, Washington did not come back to Mount Vernon for over six years after moving into the Cambridge HQ on July 2, 1775.

A potential battle with France loomed in 1798, and President Adams appointed George Washington as the commander of a new army. However, the crisis passed already when the force could be formed and organized. The General was once more called away from his cherished estate to protect the country. In the 18th century, Washington passed away after only a short while of living in Mount Vernon. By December 14, 1799, he passed away suddenly, and what followed was a huge and sincere outpouring of grief.

By including directions in his will concerning the liberation of his slaves following Martha's departure, the ruler of Mount Vernon added one more private observation to his extensive and influential public career. Without his governance, the nation would have to battle in the coming century to resolve the issue of slavery as well as all of the other significant problems.

Beverly Lewis’ The Shunning Series “Overview” Review

The basis of the series is that Katie Lapp, a young Amish woman set to marry one of the town’s Bishops, is having a hard time getting over the loss of her former love, Daniel Fisher who drowned in a river a few years back. She’s also struggling with her urges to play guitar and sing songs not in the official Amish hymn book. There is also an “English” woman snooping around town asking questions, which raises some of Katie’s own. To spoil what we already know from the title, all of this leads to Katie being shunned for her lost ways and thus spiraling the story into a 3 part series.

These films are based on Beverly Lewis’ book series, where there may or may not be more books included, but as far as I know only 3 movies were made.

I had previously watched the first 2 movies a few years back, but never got around to watching the third, so I figured I’d watch the whole series all the way through, you know just a quick binge watch cause I wanted to watch the first one again. I never read the books (Inspirational Romance Fiction isn’t really my thing,) but the first movie had enough intrigue behind it to pique something in me. Hallmark, Lifetime, all of the tv movie channels, know how to talk up a dramatic headline. It’s like clickbait, but with less bait and switch and more predictability.

So overall I felt like this could have all just been made into one extra long movie, or 2 at most, if edited right. It was just so drawn out, that to me the entire second movie could have just been divvied up and split between the first and the third. The Shunning (the 1st movie) was the best out of all 3 films, probably because it felt the most like “theater” movie as opposed to a made for TV one. All of that could have just been the “hype” around it, however I think it was also the only film that looked less like in was made in front of a green screen. The water backgrounds, although pretty, just looked so fake against their bodies. There was a lot of little things that separated the films from one another.

It was probably the casting that failed the second and third movies the most for me though. Between all 3 films there was such inconsistency within the casting and that made some of the continuity suffer. Like come on you can’t give us a brunette in one film and then make him blonde in another, call them the same character and think we won’t be at least a little annoyed. I can kinda forgive switching out Danielle Panabaker for Katie Leclerc as Katie Lapp simply because she was there for two of the three films, but the switch up on the other main characters, among other “important” cast members felt ridiculous to me. Between the second and the third film, the second wins that battle easily. I guess you could say that it had more spice to it and by the final film you knew what was going to happen if you hadn’t already figured it out yet.

Most people don’t expect much from these kinds of movies, so I’m probably judging it by its flaws that are simply common shortcomings from Hallmark in general. I can’t help going in on it a little bit, but you know what, I’m the type to get sucked in, even when these movies aren’t that good and I’m not the only one. I think people love them so much because you truly do get so much binge out of them. That’s why something like 40+ Hallmark Christmas movies were churned out last year. There is an audience for it and it’s not just the Christian Moms looking for wholesome content to cry to, we’re all looking for easy watches these days. Me personally I just like how extra these things are.
