Today, I have a special treat for you… one of my favorite plants, the gumbo-limbo tree a.k.a. Bursera simaruba! Due to its cultural importance it has many different names, but my favorite is “tourist tree.” Why? Well, doesn’t the red peeling bark resemble the red peeling skin of a sunburned tourist to you too? 🤣 Although the tree has wide distribution in the Americas, the only place you’ll find it in the US is here in South Florida. The trees are well-suited to our habitat as they are fast-growing, heat tolerant, salt tolerant, thrive in sandy/chalky soil, and are hurricane resistant! As far as edibility goes it does produce fruits, however they are only eaten by birds. The truly useful part of this plant is the magnificently fragrant sap it exudes upon being scratched! The sap can easily be used as glue or resin, but my favorite use is as an amazing incense and medicinal herb 🌿 The sap has been found to contain many anti-inflammatory compounds thereby validating its traditional uses for the treatment of pain, swelling, fever, rheumatism, rashes, allergies, and the like. But wait, there’s more! One of the coolest medicinal uses is for treating contact dermatitis from urushiol, the toxin in poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and our local hellspawn the poisonwood! In my opinion, poisonwood is the worst by far… if the blisters rupture, the fluid inside will create more blisters anywhere it runs 😭 Thankfully, the bark and resin of gumbo limbo trees can be made into a poultice that will shut all of that right down! And magically speaking? The peoples of many Caribbean islands believe that this tree was the first tree created by the maker; the tree of good and evil. Practitioners would hammer a nail into the trunk with three strokes and then walk away without looking back, believing the ritual would prevent their enemies from attacking them! #foraging #urbanforaging #plantmagic #plantmedicine #herbalism #plantsofinstagram #plantstagram #growyourownfood #optoutside #herbs #sustainableliving #greenwitch (at Mildred V Jones Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXByt-FrsEt/?utm_medium=tumblr

Celebrating the Gumbo-Limbo Tree
Celebrating the Gumbo-Limbo Tree
Melinda’s Garden Moments is heard Mon.-Fri. at 7:45 and 10:45 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. on 97.9 WHAV.
This month we celebrate a big tree located in Bradenton, Florida, a 90-year-old Gumbo-limbo (Bursera simaruba) tree.
You may know this tree by its nickname “tourist tree.” The bright red peeling bark looks like sunburned skin that so many tourists experience when traveling south in the winter.

Bursera simaruba (gumbo limbo). This tree is a true study in line. It was collected in Puerto Rico, brought over to Florida by Wigert's, I purchased it maybe 4-5 years ago and it's taken that long to grow the top. It'll never have a dense canopy but I like it just like it is. Well....maybe with a few more branches, it only has two at the moment. #bonsai #trees #floridabonsai #americanbonsai #tropicalbonsai (at Adam's Art and Bonsai Studio and Nursery)
