Developing the Ad Campaign Identity - "Don't Delay, Hear Today"
Creating a cohesive brand identity for this project has been quite a challenge for me because I care deeply about it. Over these last few weeks, I realize that I might be putting too much pressure on myself to develop work I can be proud of. To alleviate this anxiety and confusion, I've decided to return to the basics by revisiting an old ad campaign I created last semester in my Interaction Design course with Professor Khalili. In that project, we focused on developing a cohesive advertising campaign for the Ad Council concerning the blue laws of the state. With that experience in mind, I've chosen to break down the brand identity for my hearing loss project into manageable steps. Here are the actions I’ve taken to create a cohesive brand identity:
Research & Inspiration: What message to do you want to present with this ad campaign? How does this connect to the original narrative? What is the name of this campaign? Use this research to create a moodboard and visual inspiration for this ad campaign. To raise awareness of hearing loss by sharing my personal experiences with it and encouraging the audience to get their hearing checked every year. After coming up with multiple names through word association, the name of my ad campaign is "Don’t Delay, Hear Today." Potential slogan: "Hear Today for a Better Tomorrow."
Target Audience: Who is your target audience? Include specific characteristics such as name, age, location, ethnicity, background, challenges, and overall personality. Include three personas to highlight the following age groups: children, adults, and elderly people.
Project Deliverables: For the purposes of the course objectives, the deliverables include screen design, packaging design, and an artist book:
Screen Design: This project consists of a series of posters that visually depict the experience of having a hearing loss, with the goal of raising awareness and encouraging the audience to have their ears checked annually. The posters will utilize a cohesive brand identity and include experimental typography to attract attention while conveying the realities of hearing loss through imagery and common quotes associated with individuals who experience hearing loss (such as "What? Huh? Speak up. I can't hear you. Repeat please.") Each poster will feature an augmented reality (AR) component that activates a video overlay when scanned with the Artivive app or a QR code in Adobe Aero. (I am currently working on transferring the project from Artivive to Adobe Aero due to new issues that have arisen with Artivive, as instructed by Professor Khalili.) The AR component will also include an audio element that begins with normal hearing volume and gradually fades to a much quieter sound, symbolizing what I consider "normal" hearing without the use of hearing aids. There will be a total of three posters, each sized 22"x28". These posters are targeted towards otolaryngologists (ENT specialists) who might display them in their medical offices or waiting rooms, as well as hospitals and clinics specializing in ear, nose, and throat services. Additionally, the series will be marketed to audiologists who can display them in audiology clinics to promote services such as hearing tests, hearing aids, or tinnitus treatments. In a broader public context, these posters can also be placed in public transportation areas (like bus or subway stations), local community centers, and libraries or featured in newspapers and bulletin boards, especially in areas with a high percentage of older adults. The goal is to make these posters widely accessible to raise awareness about hearing loss and the importance of regular hearing check-ups. This approach reflects my personal experiences with hearing loss advertisements in medical and public settings.
Packaging Design: This component includes three packaging designs for hearing aids and accessories, specifically targeting three distinct audiences: children, adults, and elderly individuals. The designs aim to ease the confusion and overwhelming feelings that often accompany receiving hearing aids for the first time by focusing on the essential items needed by new users. The packaging will include a direction booklet, a hearing aid charger, and a portable case containing the hearing aids. Each package will be tailored to its respective age group while maintaining a cohesive, straightforward message emphasizing the importance of prioritizing mental health during this transitional period. As someone who experienced significant emotions and feelings of overwhelm when I received my first pair of hearing aids as a child and again as an adult, I want to ensure that others have a smoother transition into the world of sound. I aim to simplify the overwhelming packaging experience and provide additional resources for those who may feel stressed during this period. The packaging will be encountered by users when they receive their new hearing aids from their audiologists. At its core, the packaging will be a square box with a magnetic lid that folds back, featuring two cardboard dividers to hold the charger and hearing aids case. It will also contain a direction booklet, a mental health pamphlet, and/or motivational messages inside or outside the box. Each of the three designs will cater to its specific audience category while maintaining a cohesive color scheme and unified branding.
Artist Book: This component features three editions of a tunnel book that delves into the inner workings and anatomy of the ear. The book will be constructed using an accordion fold and will include a front cover, foreground, middle ground, background, and back panel. This project will serve as an overall summary of my narrative and will incorporate language reflecting my struggles with hearing loss, tying the entire ad campaign back to my personal experience. The artist book can be displayed or created for educational purposes in museums, science centers, or health-related exhibits.

These guidelines require that text and images maintain a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1, making them versatile across various media formats. This design choice allows individuals with moderately low vision to access the content and materials of the ad campaign, a crucial aspect I prioritize in every design project. Additionally, this general color palette contributes to the psychological impact, memorability, and reinforcement of the campaign's message. It appeals to the target audiences and serves as the primary palette for applications such as screen design, packaging design, and artist book design. The main goal of this palette is not only to feature three standout colors but also to instill a sense of trust, reliability, and professionalism. Given the serious subject of hearing loss awareness, it is important to evoke feelings of calmness and trustworthiness. The chosen color combination is often associated with the fields of science and medicine, as well as self-care applications like yoga and meditation, highlighting the calming effect I aim to convey, specifically through the packaging component of this project. These three colors possess a brightness and boldness that make them more memorable, standing out more effectively than any of the muted color palettes often associated with medical marketing and advertisements.
Color Psycology: Blue, Purple, and Green
Bright Sky Blue: The color blue is often associated with calmness, clarity, trust, and reliability, which are especially important for businesses of audiology or hearing services that require patients to have confidence in their medical professionals and their credibility. This color is intended to evoke a sense of well-being and knowledge. Blue will be used in general branding as well as for adult audiences for these reasons, as it captures their attention and conveys a sense of stability. When considering different age groups, elderly audiences may not be attracted to the bold and bright tones of blue. Therefore, for this demographic, the packaging design will feature a more muted shade of blue (specifically #486AB2 or Royal Blue), which appears slightly darker and is easier on the eyes, while still maintaining a sense of trust and credibility in medical professionals. On the other hand, children may be drawn to the bright sky blue due to its boldness and eye-catching quality. However, this can also be overstimulating for some, which is an emotion we aim to avoid, especially in the packaging design. To alleviate feelings of heaviness or overwhelm, we can lighten the blue to create a more muted version that remains visually appealing (specifically #71CFED or Aquamarine Blue). This lighter blue is designed to promote a positive, comfortable, and reassuring feeling, serving as a softer variation of the primary palette. While hearing health is crucial, it’s essential to communicate this message to children receiving hearing aids for the first time in a calm and reassuring manner, rather than amplifying their feelings of being overwhelmed. Our goal is to make the topic of hearing loss more digestible and approachable without causing additional anxiety. This adjustment primarily applies to the packaging components of the project, while the screen design and book design will follow the primary color palette of this ad campaign.
Deep Lavender: Lavender is associated with calmness and conveys the ideas of peace and reassurance—emotions I aim to evoke through my hearing aid packaging project for the ad campaign. The deep lavender hue is less bold than the bright sky blue and jade green, creating a balanced color palette while maintaining engagement. It is designed to be gentle and approachable for children, while also instilling a sense of calmness and stability in adults. If needed, this deep lavender can be replaced with a brighter, paler color called sky magenta (#C972AE), which offers more vibrant options for children-centered packaging while still preserving that calming quality and warmth. Additionally, lavender and magenta together convey a sense of richness and importance, reinforcing the core message of the ad campaign: that hearing health is essential and should be tested annually. Similar to adults, elderly individuals often perceive lavender as a symbol of calm and reassurance, helping to make the concept of hearing loss feel less sterile, shameful, or intimidating. This color can be applied to packaging targeted at the elderly demographic, with the option of switching it out for Lavender Purple (#854D9D), which provides a slightly darker, muted alternative. Overall, the calming nature of lavender can help ease potential anxieties new users may have about hearing tests or receiving hearing aids for the first time. Moreover, this color balances the overall palette, making it more bold, playful, and approachable—contrasting with much of the current hearing aid market, which often feels sterile and a bit isolating (speaking from personal experience).
Jade Green: typically, green is recognized universally as associated with health, wellness, and nature as a whole, and it bring a more grounded and natural feeling to the color palette. Its a bolder color that catches the audiences' attention with the blue, but is balanced with the lavender to bring a more grounded, natural feeling to the ad campaign brand identity. To adults and elderly people, it feels more familiar being rooted in nature and overall promotes wellness associated with hearing loss check ups, testing, and hearing aids. For the younger audience, jade green is an energizing color, and this is especially true in the option of swapping out the Jade Green with Jasmine Green, which is a more bold color compared to the Sky Magenta and Aquamarine Blue, but instantly draws your attention and helps to balance out the color palette as a whole. Jade green helps contribute to a healthier lifestyle through its energetic and vibrant quality, which can tie back to the positive benefits associated with getting your hearing checked annually, also tying back to growth and renewal, in promoting new hearing aid users to start this new journey towards a new life of hearing sound, promoting the overall message of "Don't Delay, Hear Today." Overall promoting a sense of peace and prioritizing your wellness and hearing health.
This color palette, as well as the inclusion of pure black and white for contrast and text-purposes, promotes a balance of trust between the patients and the medical professionals, overall establishing a professional look and feel to the branding while also maintaining a sense of growth, calming and reassurance that everything is going to be ok, which should be a common emotion between the three target audience groups. This palette appeals to children by taking away the scary, sterile, and overwhelming element of receiving hearing aids for the first time or dealing with hearing loss for the first time and promoting a more comforted, warm, and calming nature of the deep lavender combined with the jade green. The branding still maintains a professional quality with the bright sky blue balanced between the deep lavender and jade green as it establishes a professional, sophisticated look while having a familiar color palette already prominent in the medical field, just not all of these together normally. Elderly individuals are drawn to the trustworthiness of the bright sky blue with the calmness of the deep lavender and grounded, health-wellness of the jade green.
This palette is meant to be versatile and should be one of the connecting elements between the screen, packaging, and artist book design projects. The color palette, combined with the typeface and logo mark should maintain a cohesive look and feel across all design elements to establish consistency and connection, making everything feel like it belongs together in a combined ad campaign brand identity.
