#But the Calorie as a unit is both useful and meaningful in understanding the human metabolism

BMI is bullshit, you will never catch me defending BMI or its proponents, but calories, and by extension, calorimeters are actually a pretty effective tool for understanding how much energy a human can derive from a piece of food, I know the dismissive tagline is "You'll notice your body is different from a tub of water placed above a burn chamber" but also, in many significant ways it is identical to a burn chamber and a tub of water, at least when it comes to specific processes. Like, I think the way we think about calories isn't great, there is an absolute over-focus on simply counting at the input level, but overcorrecting into 'the Calorie as a unit is entirely meaningless' isn't the way forward either, IMO. It seems like giving up on the idea that we can use things to learn about other things, when, in fact, comparisons to similar but easier to understand systems are how we've gone about understanding basically everything we currently understand about the universe, which is quite a lot.
#Like your body isn't *just* going to use that energy to heat up some water#But also keeping you (a bag of water) warm is a large part of your metabolism's job#And the heating of an object with a known specific heat capacity is a good way to measure the energy involved in a process#And the way your body breaks down food is reasonably similar to the combustion process#Particularly from an energy capture standpoint#Because it is taking the complex hydrocarbons that make up food#And converting them mostly into smaller more stable forms#And using the difference in structural energy of those things as energy for various chemical processes#Energy is very well known to be extremely interchangeable the amount of energy it takes to heat water does not care where it came from#And likewise the energy to heat water can instead be used to make ATP to provide stored energy for chemical processes#Or the various other ways the human body works bless it#Anyhow this is a technical quibble with a post whose general thrust I agree with#Which is why it is its own post#Don't get me wrong I'm also not endorsing any diet or dietician's understanding of Calories and how they work#But the Calorie as a unit is both useful and meaningful in understanding the human metabolism#That's the hill I'm willing to stake out here and there's a large post in circulation with a comment that is in opposition to that#And it is my stance that their heuristics are fundamentally wrong and broken they are using bad reasoning#The exact quote is full of 'in my understanding' and 'just a thought's#And like bro your understanding is sophomoric at best#That is what we do but you didn't stop to ask why we do it or if that actually makes any sense#Literally huge portions of modern thermodynamics are based on the ability of experiments like this to accurately measure energy release#And like IDK maybe you can upend it maybe your understanding is better#But pointing out the basic mechanism without understanding how or why it works isn't going to be what does it

Infancy
THE PROCESS OF SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
Changes in the nervous system are extremely rapid in the first 2 years. In most parts of the brain, development of dendrites and synapses reaches its first peak between 12 and 24 months, after which “pruning” of synapses occurs. Myelinization of nerve fibers also occurs rapidly in the first 2 years.
An infant will have reflexes such as adaptive reflexes (sucking), primitive reflexes (startle) and Babinski reflexes. Neonates move through a series of consciousness in a cycle that last about 2 hours.
During infancy the neonates became stronger, they develop stronger bones, muscles, stamina larger lungs, heart. Their motor skills also improve rapidly in the first 2 years.
Experts suggest that breastfeeding is always the best choice to have a healthier baby. Macronutrient malnutrition may occur if the babies diet only has very few calories, while micronutrient malnutrition happens when an infant has enough calories but lacks nutrients, vitamins and minerals. Babies also needs regular checkups and immunization to avoid respiratory infections and other diseases. Sudden infant death syndrome is one of the most common cause of death between 1 month and 1 year of age in the united states.
Color vision is already present at birth but visual acuity and visual tracking skills are relatively poor at birth and then develop rapidly at the first few months. New born can actually identify where does a sound came from, they can hear human voice. Smelling tasting and the sense of touch motion are so well developed at birth.
 LEARNING AND COGNITIVE CHANGES
Piaget stated that a sensorimotor infant has a small range of basic schemes, from which she moves toward symbolic representation. There are primary, secondary, and tertiary circular reactions in this milestones of this stage as well as object permanence, means–end behavior, and deferred imitation. Developmentalists such as Spelke and Baillargeon have studied object permanence within the context of infants’ global understanding of objects. They said that Piaget underestimated how much younger infants know about objects and their movements.
Babies are able to learn through classical conditioning, operant conditioning, and observation of models within the first few weeks of life. By 14 months, they learn successful and unsuccessful modeled behaviors and the would follow the things that they think are right.  From an early age, infants use categories to organize information. The understanding of how they relate to each other, increases over the first 2 years of life. 3 and 4-month-old infants show signs of remembering specific experiences over periods of as long as a few days or a week, a sign that they must have some form of internal representation well before Piaget supposed they do.
According to behaviorist theories of language development claim that infants learn language through parental reinforcement of word like sounds and correct grammar. Nativists say that an innate language processor helps them learn language rules. Interactionists say that language development is a subprocess of cognitive development.
High-pitched infant-directed speech (IDS) helps infants learn language by attracting their attention to the simple, repetitive, and expanded expressions that adults use. The amount of verbal interaction that takes place between infants and mature speakers is another influence. Poverty is associated with language development as well.
Babies’ earliest sounds are cries, followed at about 2 months by cooing, then at about 6 months by babbling. At 9 months, babies typically use meaningful gestures and can understand a small vocabulary of spoken words. The first spoken words, usually names for objects or people, typically occur at about 1 year, after which toddlers add words slowly for a few months and then rapidly. The rate of language development varies from one child to another. Children who are late talkers typically catch up with their peers by the time they enter school. Early word learning seems to follow similar patterns in all cultures. However, the word order of a child’s telegraphic speech depends on which language he is learning.
 SOCIAL AND PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT
There are temperament dimensions that temperament theorists generally agree such as basic activity level, approach/positive emotionality, inhibition, negative emotionality, and effortful control/ task persistence There is strong evidence that temperamental differences have a genetic component and that they are at least somewhat stable throughout infancy and childhood. However, temperament is not totally determined by heredity or neurological processes. The “fit” between children’s temperaments and their environments may be more important than temperament itself.
The infant begins to develop a sense of self, including the awareness of a separate self and the understanding of self-permanence (which may be collectively called the subjective self) and awareness of herself as an object in the world (the objective self) during the middle of the second year. An emotional self develops in the first year. The range of emotions infants experience as well as their ability to make use of information about emotions, such as facial expressions increases dramatically over the first year.
Infants in nonparental care are more likely to be overweight than those who are cared for exclusively by parents. Research on the effects of nonparental care on cognitive developmental variables such as intelligence test scores and academic achievement have produced inconsistent results. Some studies show positive effects, but others do not. When a child receives more intellectual stimulation in nonparental care than he would at home, there are likely to be positive effects on cognitive development. But when the reverse is true, nonparental care may have neutral or negative effects on cognitive development. The impact of day care on children’s social development is unclear. Some studies show a small difference in security of attachment between children in day care and those reared at home; others suggest that home-care and day-care children do not differ with respect to attachment.
Infants’ physiological responses to the stresses associated with nonparental care may underlie its association with developmental outcomes. The quality of nonparental care a child receives may be as important as the quantity of nonparental care. Individual differences and gender may interact with the quality of a care arrangement, the quantity of outside-the-home care a child receives, or both. Average differences between children who receive nonparental care and those who are cared for entirely in their own home are small.

REFLECTION:
Taking care of an infant is not that easy, it’s not just about happiness they can give but they are also a responsibility for a family or both parents. It’s very important that before bearing a child both parents are already capable of adding new life to the family. Infants are learning rapidly with what they see or hear, they must be given enough attention or guidance for them to grow well. It’s the right of a child to have adequate food, home and love for them to live. In this stage is the critical stage of their life, they are making their first in life as they develop physically, emotionally and mentally. During infancy, a child’s learning is growing very well that they will acquire those things they think are right by following the older one. As an adult or care taker of a child it is important that we are observant enough with our actions. They are learning day by day so we must be careful of the things that we are teaching them as well as they emotions that we are giving to a child. Any tiny details that would be acquired by a child will be part of his/her development. During this stage the infants are the social butterflies, they give us happiness while giving them new learnings. They must feel that they are being cared and they have people where they can feel safety and belongingness. In this phase of their life they are forming relationships with other people. Guidance provides children with appropriate and positive models pf behavior and helps them to develop respect, self- regulation, self- confidence and sensitivity as they learn and grow. Guidance is needed if a parent wants a child to have appropriate behavior before a child display inappropriate attitude because of lack of guidance.

Cosmos Q&A: Taking the exercise path
Researchers this week released what they say this is the first study to demonstrate that the intensity of physical activity is important over and above the total volume of activity in lowering the risk of an early death. The findings show, for example, that adding two minutes of brisk walking to a 35-minute daily stroll could cut that risk by 21%.
Cosmos spoke to the Australia-based member of the team, Dr Paddy Dempsey from the MRC Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge (UK), the Leicester Diabetes Centre (UK), and the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne.
You collected data from 100,000 people. What story did this tell?
The role of intensity over and above activity volume was ambiguous previously, but the size of this study and the availability of a week’s objectively measured physical activity data for each participant allowed us for the first time to address this question in an integrated way. The key finding from this study was that doing more physical activity of any intensity is beneficial, but that expending those calories in more intense activity is better still.
Moreover, the results also showed that activity volumes accumulated almost exclusively through light-intensity activity could still halve the mortality risk. The key take-home message therefore is that there are several different pathways or options to maintaining good health (e.g. through progressively increasing activity volume or intensity, but ideally a combination of both) and people can choose the path that works best for them.
Were there any surprises in the findings?
For physical activity researchers at least, the key findings of this study will not be all that surprising. There is a wealth of epidemiological evidence showing that higher levels of physical activity are associated with a lower risk of mortality and other adverse health outcomes.
However, this previous evidence, and current physical activity guidelines, are based largely on epidemiological studies in which physical activity was assessed by self-report questionnaires. Self-report measures of physical activity, while still important, are prone to reporting bias and measurement error, and are unable to robustly quantify light-intensity activities of daily living (a key contributor to total activity volume).
What will perhaps be more surprising for many is that the benefits of physical activity shown in this study using wearable devices may be greater than previously considered, and that the levels of activity at which they occur may be lower. This could have important implications for public-health guidelines in the future.
At first read, the studies suggest you actually don’t have to do a lot to achieve significant gains. Is that a correct reading?
Yes, to a degree. The caveat is that our inactive reference group are not completely bed-rested – they do 1-2 hours of light activity and 5-10 minutes of moderate activity each day, which is still not a lot because we count every five seconds that register into these categories.
Expending more energy at any physical activity intensity was strongly associated with a lower risk of death over the following three years. For example, participants who accumulated 20 kJ/kg/day through physical activity were a third less likely to die compared to those who accumulated 15 kJ/kg/day, when the proportion from at least moderate intensity activity was 10% in both cases.
The additional activity is the equivalent to a 35-minute stroll, with an extra two minutes at a brisker pace. When considering the simpler associations of physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) – that is, adjusting for confounders but not activity intensity – undertaking just an additional 5 kJ/kg/day (relative to a low baseline of 15 kJ/kg/day) was associated with a 37% lower risk of all-cause mortality.

The results from this study also suggest that the greatest potential for a reduction in mortality risk was for those with the lowest levels of PAEE (i.e. the most inactive), whereas those who were already achieving higher levels of PAEE (i.e. greater than the median amount in the population) may achieve less additional gains from doing more. This is in line with the classic curvilinear dose-response curve we often see for the association between physical activity and health – where you get the “most bang for your public health buck” so to speak when you shift more inactive people to becoming more active.
These findings support the general public-health message that “any activity is better than none, and more is better still”, and benefits are still achieved at levels below the guideline target.
Is exercising to be healthy the same as exercising to be fit?
I think to best answer this requires a good understanding of the key concepts around fitness and activity. Both “physical activity” (any general bodily movement that results in energy expenditure) and “exercise” (a behavioural subset of physical activity that is more planned, structured or and repetitive) are behaviours that help improve and maintain various components of “physical fitness” (a set of attributes that people have or achieve) – which can be more ‘health-related’ or ‘performance-related’.
So physical activity and fitness are separate concepts that are both important for overall health but are distinct in how they are measured. Different types of activity promote different types of physiological changes and different health outcomes, therefore our conceptual “starting point” for baseline activity or fitness, and ultimate goals, likely also matter. From a public health perspective, it is likely more important to understand the relationships among type, volume and intensity for sedentary, light-intensity, and moderate-intensity activities, whereas understanding more vigorous intensity activities might be more relevant to athletes focused on performance-related goals.
Is being sedentary the same as not being active?
Sedentary behaviour is defined as any waking behaviour characterised by an energy expenditure ≤1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs), while in a sitting, reclining, or lying posture. It is considered conceptually distinct from physical inactivity, and it is certainly possible to meet or exceed the public health guidelines for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (e.g. 150 min/week), and yet also spend most waking hours in sedentary behaviours (picture your typical desk based worker who walks or cycles into work).
This is a different question to what was addressed directly in our study, but relevant for public health, since behaviourally when we look to replace our typically high volumes of sedentary time throughout the day, it is most likely to be with light-intensity activities of daily living, and that would drive overall activity volume up, everything else being equal.
There are a lot of myths around exercise. Does research need to take account of that?
That’s a pretty open question, but I think a key myth relevant to the general context of this study is that you must hurt and sweat to gain any “real” or “meaningful” health benefits (i.e. the “no pain no gain” mantra). But evidence increasingly shows that even light-intensity activity appears to provide benefits and is likely preferable to sitting still for large portions of the day.
When increasing physical activity toward a desired level, small and well-spaced increments will reduce the incidence of adverse health events and likely improve adherence. These key concepts are relatively unambiguous and detailed in current guidelines (though sometimes misunderstood). Nevertheless, we still have a lot more to understand about the optimal “balance” of behaviours to maximise risk reduction.
Exercise science is an increasingly sophisticated and multi-disciplinary field. What have been the major advances?
Credit: Geber86 / Getty Images
A key factor in advancing the field of physical activity and exercise science has been the advances in tools for measuring activities of all intensities, and even differentiating between some types of activity (e.g. cycling, walking). This study used wearable devices, backed up by a series of validation studies, to estimate physical activity energy expenditure more robustly and on a larger scale than ever before, providing a proof-of-concept for wearable device use at scale in the population and new insights into the dose-response relationships of physical activity volume and intensity with mortality risk.
The use of wearable devices that monitor physical activity is projected to increase dramatically in the future, which could help provide people with more personalised information and feedback to improve their health. However, there is a lot more research to be done in this space on multiple fronts. For example, how can and might different people use wearable devices in everyday living, what are the specific health benefits for different amounts and types of activities, and how might the data gathered compare to what is typically obtained in research studies (be that device-based or through self-report)?
Do we understand how genes and other biological factors influence physical activity and sedentary behaviour?
All human behavioural traits are usually determined by both environmental/social and biological factors, and there is growing evidence in both humans and animals which suggests that intrinsic biological factors may also play an important role in the regulation of daily physical activity. These may include complex influences on brain circuitry related to personality, affect regulation, relative reinforcing, and reward processing, or via influencing cardiorespiratory and muscle capacity/function to regularly engage in physical activity.
These elements are likely to also interact with self-efficacy and other core components of social–behavioural models for both physical activity and sedentary behaviours. Since successful efforts to improve levels of physical activity in the population are likely contingent upon an accurate understanding of both biological and societal determinants of habitual activity, it will be important to better integrate such evidence into our understanding of the overall scientific picture.
Seems to me what we ultimately will do with specific biological or genetic information is debatable, as regardless of their relative importance, we all need to engage in physical activity to maintain our health. It could perhaps help with more precise and effective targeting of physical activity interventions to those who may benefit from it most, but it is equally possible that we will get more “bang for our buck” by improving societal and environmental infrastructure to support active living for everyone.

Concerning memories in my brain, rot, corruption, dishonesty: War becomes inevitable for me when certain concerns rises, choose better hopefully. As I tread my life while trying not to rot or corrupt, what happened to me these few days(mainly since the end of July 2018 till 8/6/2018) combining with past experiences and knowledge revealed the truth of a lot more as well as bigger pictures. I probably forgot it sometime before and some will exploit me to win more ends that is dishonest, rotten or corrupt for themselves at my sufferance. Such deeds belong to that "Rot and corruption" sort of thing I talked about and faced often. Written to myself for thoughts, try not to have it forgotten. The Holy Grail to Faster Weight Loss: Metabolism Trackers
New Post has been published on http://healingawerness.com/metabolism/the-holy-grail-to-faster-weight-loss-metabolism-trackers/
The Holy Grail to Faster Weight Loss: Metabolism Trackers
For centuries we have been searching for the Holy Grail to weight-loss We have tried thousands of diets
We have seen the mainstream: South Beach diet, Atkins diet, the blood type diet We have seen the dangerously insane: the tapeworm diet, the cotton-ball diet and the constant changes and exercise trends are similarly confusing But, what is missing in all of these different approaches to diet and exercise? How do you even know which approach is right for you? How do you even know which one is even working for you? Well, the missing piece of information is understanding your personalized metabolic information That's right your metabolism It's the key to understanding exactly how much weight you need to gain lose or maintain to achieve your weight management goals
Now there are these really amazingly cool almost magical devices called metabolic trackers and with just your simple breath they help determine exactly what your personalized metabolic information is Recently, there is a whole new wave of metabolic trackers that have come to the market As your personal healthy Matchmaker my goal in today's video is to highlight three metabolic trackers to help determine which might be the right match for you Let's start with the basic question, what is metabolism? Metabolism is the process by which your body turns the food you eat into energy to be used immediately or stored for later The food we eat is fuel for our bodies and metabolism is the process of how we burn that fuel for energy everyone's rate of metabolism or metabolic rate is different and it is based on many factors such as age, genetics, weight, gender, hormones, sleep and more
There are two products currently available for tracking metabolic information and a third that is in limited release The first is called Breezing Breezing measures your breath by using something called indirect calorimetry to track your resting metabolic rate The second device is called LEVL LEVL takes a completely different approach
This device still uses your breath but it calculates your level of ketosis Ketosis refers to how your body metabolizes fat The third device is called Lumen Lumen is currently in beta testing and not yet broadly available Keep listening to learn more about each of these options to figure out which is the best option for you
First up is Breezing This device uses your breath to calculate your resting metabolic rate This means that it is measuring the rate or speed at which you burn energy when you are laying down and just performing basic human functions such as breathing circulation and digestion It calculates how many calories you need to just function at rest A higher number means you have a fast metabolism and burn more calories each day while a lower number means your metabolism is slower and thus you are burning fewer calories per day
Here is an example of a snapshot from Breezing Not only will it allow you to track your metabolism over time but it will also measure whether you are burning carbs fat or a mix of both It does this through a process called indirect calorimetry In its simplest form calorimetry measures the ratio of oxygen ingested to the carbon dioxide you are releasing This is an indirect way of assessing the rate at which energy is used
Breezing allows you to track your diet and activity over time and makes adjustments as needed to achieve your weight management goals The next tracker is called LEVL Although this device captures your breath what sets this device apart is its ability to measure the level of ketones This will indicate the amount of fat you have burned Fats along with carbohydrates are the primary sources of energy for our bodies
When your body is burning fat for energy it is in the state ketosis during ketosis the body generates molecules called ketones One of these ketones is called acetone due to its small size as a tone appears in our excelled breath and is an indicator of fat burn LEVL has a sensor to detect and measure acetone in your breath Since body weight is a combination of several factors such as water muscle and fat it can be difficult to use a weigh scale and pinpoint if what you're actually losing is water muscle or fat But with LEVL, you can quickly learn if what you're doing for your diet and exercise is helping to burn fat
One device is for at-home use and another called LEVL Pro is for wellness professionals LEVL may be a good option for you if you are interested in a ketogenic diet Each of these devices offers you more insight about your weight management plan by giving you meaningful data about what is or is not working to ensure you can make adjustments to your diet and exercise routine without having to wait weeks before you see results Lumen is another tracker that is available The company is accepting beta users in select cities in the United States
Limited information is available for now Stay tuned by subscribing to match health if you liked what you saw in today's video then you don't want to miss out you've got to join the Match Health community

Why We Push Ourselves Too Hard and How to Work Less
“Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” ~Unknown
I was sitting on the beach with my wonderful girlfriend, trying to relax on our vacation in Florida, yet I was racked with anxiety.
We were lying under a large umbrella, taking in the beautiful waves and swaying palm trees, attempting to recover from the past months (and years) of overwork and overstress. But all I could think about was a marketing initiative I was working on for a client.
The more I tried to chill, the more nervous I became. My girlfriend lay peacefully, dozing off occasionally, while I was busy fending off a full-blown panic attack.
Did I hurry back from our beach session to get back to work? That would be crazy, right? Well, it was worse. I pulled out my laptop and went to work right there on the beach.
I was so addicted to my computer and so stretched thin with commitments that I couldn’t even enjoy this highly anticipated vacation with the love of my life. In fact, the only thing I can remember when I look back on this trip is my stress. I don’t remember enjoying the beach or ever feeling present.
When, I got back from Florida, I didn’t feel refreshed at all. I more desperately need a vacation after it than I did before it. Not only had my over-commitment to work prevented me from enjoying my vacation, it led me to operating at below my best for many months following.
Why did I do this to myself? It was a combination of things. I was insecure and using money to mask it. I was correlating my self-worth with the amount of money I had in the bank. I worked more to distract myself from my own anxieties. But most of all, I was working myself to death because of how the human brain works.
The Psychology of Over-Working
The benefits of working less are counterintuitive, but well documented. There are the obvious benefits—such as having more time for hobbies, friends, family, health, or even working on bigger and better projects—and then there are the less obvious benefits, such as improving creativity and productivity.
Tim Ferriss’ proposition of a “four-hour work week” is attractive to our rational thinking brains, but in practice, it’s surprisingly difficult to work less.
The reason we work more than we need to—sometimes to the extent of actually hurting our productivity, health, or personal relationships—may lie in how humans have evolved.
In their book Why Beautiful People Have More Daughters: From Dating, Shopping, and Praying to Going to War and Becoming a Billionaire – Two Evolutionary Psychologists Explain Why We Do What We Do, Alan S. Miller and Satoshi Kanazawa postulate that our brains are shaped by evolutionary pressures to survive and reproduce. We’ve adapted to recurring problems faced by our hunter-gatherer ancestors.
“Our human nature is the cumulative product of the experience of our ancestors in the past, and it affects how we think, feel, and behave today,” Miller and Kanazawa write. People who showed no anxiety to threats would not have taken the appropriate steps to solve the problems and therefore may not have survived.
In his book Evolutionary Psychology: Neuroscience Perspectives Concerning Human Behavior and Experience, William J. Ray, describes how these evolutionary adaptations can actually hinder us from properly interpreting reality:
“Consciousness is just the tip of the iceberg; most of what goes on in your mind is hidden from you. As a result, your conscious experience can mislead you into thinking that our circuitry is simpler than it really is…our modern skulls house a Stone Age mind.”
In the context of work-life balance, our brains didn’t evolve to determine exactly how much we need to work. Our brains simply want us to survive and reproduce, and working more seems to contribute to those end goals. Our brain’s anxiety about survival and reproduction motivates us to work more, even though it’s not usually in our best interest over the long-term.
Similarly, our brains crave sugar because in the past, calories were scarce and we needed to eat as much as possible to account for extended periods without food.
Sugar has a high calorie density, so it was very economical for our ancestors. As a result, many people today have a tendency to overeat unhealthy foods, even though we don’t face a problem of the scarcity of food like we did before the agricultural revolution. Unfortunately, sugar contributes to a number of health problems over the long-term, but our brains don’t understand that.
Our brains think working excessively to gather resources contributes to survival and reproduction. But it doesn’t know how to moderate. More work doesn’t always lead to more money, let alone a more fulfilling life. At it’s worst, excessive work can lead to burnout, depression, panic attacks, and a lack of meaningful relationships.
Here are four signs you may be working to the point of your own demise:
Working far beyond what is needed despite the risk of negative consequences
After reaching a goal, you immediately set another more ambitious one
Refusing to delegate work, despite the opportunity cost of doing the work yourself
Creating more work that doesn’t add value in order to avoid feelings of guilt, anxiety, insecurity, or depression
To be clear, there are benefits to working hard. Working more can help you get more done, and, assuming you are doing the right work, that can help you make more money. And there are times when anxiety is rational and you legitimately need to work more in order to survive. But more often than not, working too much can do more harm than good.
The counterintuitive reality is that working more does not always mean working productively if it means you’re going to burn out.
Simple But Hard Choices
We have a choice about how to deal with working too much. Like so many other challenges, there is the simple but hard solution, and a complex but easy solution.
For your health, the simple but hard solution is to eat more healthy food and less unhealthy food. This solution requires discipline, but it doesn’t cost money, and it’s proven to work. The complex but easy solution is to pay for the latest diet products.
The simple but hard solution to workaholism is to work less. This means saying “no” to unnecessary projects and responsibilities. However, I call this the hard solution for a reason. First, it would be a bruise to your ego to admit you can’t handle something. Second, it requires introspection and change in order to address underlying anxieties or insecurities that may be the impetus for pathological working habits.
Fear or frustration with executing on the simple solution incentivizes us to change course. So we add complexity.
These complex but easy solutions include productivity apps, time management processes, or even prescription drugs. They can help us eek out a couple more units of productivity on a given day, but they often have negative side effects over the long term, and more notably, they enable us to avoid blaming ourselves or putting in the hard work of conquering our anxieties and insecurities.
These solutions are like playing whack-a-mole—they only solve the surface level symptoms. James Altucher provided an apt analogy in writing about the power of saying “no” to bad opportunities:
“When you have a tiny tiny piece of sh*t in the soup it doesn’t matter how much more water you pour in and how many more spices you put on top. There’s sh*t in the soup.”
Often times, continuing to work excessively, even while using the latest and greatest productivity apps, only leads to burnout, which results in an extended period of low productivity, or, worse, an unfulfilling life, void of meaningful relationships or even physical and mental health problems.
How to Work Less, Survive, and Prosper
Your brain doesn’t know or care that working less won’t prevent you from surviving or reproducing in modern times.
It doesn’t know how much money you have in your bank account or how many hours you need to work in order to retire in thirty years.
It definitely doesn’t care about helping you achieve higher ambitions like finding love or having fun on weekends.
You feel anxious about working less because your brain only cares about surviving and reproducing.
But we’re not slaves to our lizard brains. The idea that working less can help you accomplish more requires some critical thinking. However, with awareness of how our brains work, we can make decisions that are healthier and more productive.
So, how you can you counteract your brain’s adaptive impulses? I’ll share two strategies that have worked for me.
First, know your priorities. Every time you say “yes” to more work you’re saying “no” to the other aspects of your life that you value. By taking inventory of your list of priorities, and where work lies on that list, you can make decisions that will help you live a more fulfilling life.
Second, address the underlying issues. Oftentimes we work to avoid thinking about our insecurities or shortcomings. Or, we think we need to have more money in order to be loved. I’ve been guilty of both of these.
Once I gained awareness of these issues, it was easier to make healthier decisions about my work. I worked to conquer my anxiety instead of making it worse by burying it in work, and I’ve dispelled the myth that I’m not worthy of love unless I have massive amounts of wealth.
Since doing this work, I’ve said no to many great opportunities in order to keep my life in balance. It’s difficult at the time, but I’m healthier and happier for it.
It may sound idealistic to work less, but if it can help your health, productivity, and life isn’t it worth a shot? If it doesn’t work for you, keep in mind that there will always be more work to do!

National Nonprofit Keep America Beautiful Joins Corporate Partners to Boost Recycling in Flint, Michigan, Schools
The Coca-Cola Company, Nestlé Waters North America, the PepsiCo Foundation and the Walmart Foundation today announced that they have partnered to fund an integrated recycling education and awareness initiative for the 10,000 school students affected by the Flint water crisis, led by national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful and its local Flint, Michigan, affiliate Keep Genesee County Beautiful (KGCB).
In January 2016, the four companies announced they would provide up to 6.5 million bottles of safe and clean drinking water to Flint school students. From the outset of the program, they have been providing for the storage and delivery of the bottled water, as well as the transporting of the empty water bottles for recycling.
The new initiative provides funding for a multi-tiered educational approach aimed at increasing the number of plastic bottles that are recycled within school grounds as well as create opportunities to provide students, teachers and staff with the knowledge and the passion to recycle at home, at school and on-the-go.
“Keep America Beautiful is thrilled to receive broad support from a host of partners in our efforts to educate, motivate and activate Flint’s students, teachers and the broader school community to properly recycle the tremendous amount of material that is being generated,” said Brenda Pulley, senior vice president, recycling, Keep America Beautiful. “This is a great opportunity for us to work closely with Keep Genesee County Beautiful to make a meaningful difference in improving recycling throughout Flint and to teach the next generation of environmental stewards the benefits of recycling and how to recycle right.”
The K-12 school-based program objectives are to:
Provide outreach, tools, resources and activities to educate, motivate and activate students, staff and teachers to recycle more and recycle right;
Organize, support and share resources with recycling champions at each school to support day-to-day recycling efforts;
Share best practices and support school personnel responsible for collecting and consolidating recycling at each school on proper recycling bin placement, signage and collection of the recyclables; and
Track and report the amount of recyclables being collected by the schools with the goal of achieving a 25 percent increase in recycling.
“Promoting recycling education and infrastructure to Flint schools in partnership with Keep America Beautiful is important and something we are actively engaged in,” said Aaron Stallings, Walmart Market Manager for the North Central Division. “We see this program contributing to a more resilient and sustainable Flint.”
“The Coca-Cola Company understands the importance of ongoing support for the residents of the City of Flint. Providing water for daily use was the first step and the promotion of recycling and recycling education round out this support,” said Bruce Karas, Vice President, Environment and Sustainability, The Coca-Cola Company North America. “We must all do our part to ensure that residents’ needs are met and the City of Flint returns to the viable and vibrant city we all know it can be.”   “Water is a human right and as soon as the PepsiCo team learned about Flint and their drinking water supply, we reached out to be part of creating sustainable, local solutions,” said Tim Carey, Senior Director Sustainability and Recycling, PepsiCo. “We all want to be part of communities with abundant natural resources so PepsiCo is pleased to support the City of Flint and other partners to give back to Genesee County. We’re striving to collect every bottle and every can as part of this powerful partnership.”   “Access to clean, safe drinking water is the right of every man, woman and child. That is why helping our neighbors in Flint is something we've been proud to do,” said Nelson Switzer, Chief Sustainability Officer for Nestlé Waters North America. "But our shared commitment doesn’t end there.  We now need to work together so the bottles the coalition used to deliver safe drinking water are recovered and recycled.  Together with our coalition partners and the families of Flint, we are very pleased to kick-start a massive recycling opportunity.”
Keep America Beautiful is working in tandem with KGCB to tailor the recycling educational lesson plans, tools and activities for Flint’s students, while ongoing recycling education and program implementation is being conducted by KGCB staff and volunteers. Resources include take-home materials in an effort to bring the school education and experience home, reaching families in their residences to also enhance curbside recycling participation.
“Since this crisis began, Keep Genesee County Beautiful has been the ‘go-to’ recycling resource for the Flint community. We help Flint residents cope with the water crisis by raising awareness and educating residents about the benefits of recycling, by signing up residents for curbside recycling and being a pickup point for recycling bins,” said Karen West, Program Director/Lead Consultant, KGCB. “We are incredibly grateful for this financial support and appreciate the opportunity to work with Keep America Beautiful and the students and staff of Flint schools to encourage, educate and engage the community in recycling."
Keep America Beautiful is providing materials from its Waste in Place curriculum; its “I Want To Be Recycled” public service advertising campaign; Recycle-Bowl, its national in-school K-12 recycling competition; America Recycles Day and other resources as part of the overall programming to improve the in-school recycling rate.
