it was the fucking will of mcdrai and the team. it was the belief that the whole team shared even during the blood sweat and tears of being a 2-9-1 basement team losing against the sharks. it was the lowest of lows firing of a beloved coach. it was the belief that they could come back and give a huge fuck you to the people who doubted them. it was our baby goalie stu who was thrown into the #1 goalie position in his second official full year. it was hiring coach knobs, someone who has never head coached an nhl team but has an education degree from the university of alberta. it was the thigh taps to each other when down 4-0 against carolina. it was the 5-0 win against the caps and save against ovechkin. it was the bringing ourselves back from the fucking dead. it was the plunger and the painter. it was the 16 game win run. it was the 13 year tenured forever young ‘coach’s favourite’ nuge becoming a dad and choosing to stay in edm his whole career. it was brown finally scoring a goal. it was little boy ben stelter, the reason why our captain is more open with the media. it was joey moss. it was gene principe and his floor glizzy or his cbj canon reaction or his ‘we love gene!’. it was our 50 goal scorer. it was our penalty kill. it was our power play. it was wearing pride tape even when it isn’t our pride night. it was toad but honestly could be anyone. it was toad and luigi. it was playing games on the plane and letting your goalie win. it was realizing our team needed a sports psychologist and getting one. it was the whole city surviving the decade of darkness to this moment. it was the full canadian match up. it was having our back up goalie play his first stanley cup playoff game and winning it. it was being counted out before game 1 was even played. it was having former team players showing up on screen or in the crowd because they loved the team so much. it was defending darnell (and his ass). it was the western conference champs. it was making it into the finals. it was 3-0 with our backs up against the wall. it was our team dragging them back to alberta. it was then 3-3 with hope. it was breaking records, again and again and again and again on the backs of the two greatest players in the world who were playing stitched together with duct tape and bound together under pressure and prayers. it was connor. it was leon. it was the whole fucking team.

it was the edmonton oilers.

yourusername welcome back to my postgame penalty box update show: THE ANAHEIM DUCKS ENDED THE BRUINS'S SIX GAME WIN STREAK EDITION! (and they brought the bruins into OT for the first time this season!)

tonight, cammy played his 900th game, gudas scored his first goal as a duck, my son and my dad scored goals in the final two minutes of regulation to tie the game, mac-t scored his first game winning goal of the season in overtime (i love you! i'm so proud! enjoy your forehead kisses!), and my lovely z-baby started a scrum over our son, leo, getting a hard hit which resulted in him drawing a roughing penalty by lindholm! and z led all forwards in time on ice with 22:49 minutes! all without getting a penalty!

oh, AND LEO GOT HIS FIRST ASSIST TONIGHT ON MASON'S GOAL! jackson also assisted on the goal, which means that all three players involved are under 23! we are, after all, the youngest team in the league, and it's starting to pay off! they're 2 for 2 on the roadie, so let's keep this up!

do you know if there's a timeline (ideally with sources) available anywhere detailing mitch's last contract negotiations? i didn't follow the leafs until a couple years after and seeing how quickly some pretty minor things ("looked upon as gods," all the times he's been torched for out of context/partial quotes, this whole security nonsense, etcetcetc) have been exaggerated into unforgiveable controversies in realtime makes me very curious how much of the relentless anger over his contract is rooted in actual reality vs people just clinging to the most uncharitable perspective possible to justify their weird obsessive hatred for him for like idk not taking a hometown discount and having a shitty dad lmao. like right after willy signed this year a leafs podcast (!!) guy tweeted about mitch wanting more than him and i still see replyguys using that as absolute Proof of his camp leaking to ~the media~ when it makes zero sense for that dude to be a legitimate source?? how much of what they repeat as the cold hard facts is an accurate assessment of what happened vs falling for "insiders" speculating on a hot topic to farm engagement from a super reactionary fanbase, ykwim?

i don't know of anything like that (although you may be tempting me to make one), but even trying to sort through some of the bullshit of that time, it's impossible to tell what's real and like you said, what people's Interpretations of things have just become canon in a whole bunch of other fans minds who are primed and ready to hate him anyway. just looking at their numbers, i'm sure mitch will want more than willy and i'm sure that's a reasonable demand considering the leafs know the stats too, lol.

i think darren dreger played a big part in leaking certain information, like the offer sheets w cbj and potentially mitch playing in switzerland. he also did a lot of 'well the leafs are going to need to over x amount', but if i'm so honest.... i've definitely seen that used even being a more recent fan for other players so LOL. regardless of what's true or not, those are all just tactics and mitch marner ended up signing a deal that the team offered him. to act like players and their agents have never in the history of the world threatened to leave is ridiculous bc that's exactly what negotiating IS and the dumbest ppl among us cannot comprehend that. mitch's negotations just were apparently very chaotic and public and his team wanted auston to be the comparable, so everyone always tries to say he DEMANDED matthews money but like...... did he get it. is he still here. does he still want to be here despite not making as much. like it's all just such stupid arguments. i mostly haven't done a lot of research about this because i don't want to have to wade through just hours and hours and layers and layers of bullshit on forums like reddit or twitter or targeted articles that journalists put out in anger. we're gonna have to experience it again this year, but i hope mitch's agent can just keep things under wraps.

lmao i guess i've been mostly mia on here recently so my opinions aren't as clear as they used to be -- i got super invested in vgk b/c of eichel, and all my other favs are god awful this season (canucks, flyers, cbj). so i'm basically only consistently watching the golden knights right now, to avoid compounding my seasonal misery.

anyway, yes, if you extract your opinion of vgk from some of management's less savory behaviors (which, to be fair to them, they're more ruthless than some other management teams but frankly, they are also just another sports front office who would sell any of your or my favs for a championship) and ignore the general pet hate around them in general nhl fandom, they're a really fun team! they're very talented. they have some quietly fun and charming personalities. they have a collection of hot suburban dads, which as an "Old" is my fav personal bit about the team :) also, i will give that their twitter admin really is just one of the more annoying official twitter personalities in the league. i try to only be mean about it in private, tho

my first cbj game, i met a girl in line behind me and she told me where to go to meet players. she met me out there.

the second game i went to, mr kei chatted to a dad who was with his sons and his sons were up on the stairs where they could see into the the garage and they were telling us who was coming out

it’s not just players, you can meet more people and it’s so beautiful

exactly!! like i honestly feel like meeting other fans is quite possibly better than meeting the actual players!!
