I think one of the insidious things about this whole generatave art 'AI' slop-fest we are living in, is that it erodes a very basic right we take for granted.
The right not to work for a person and or entity. We're contributing our effort to an AI company's bottom line when ever they csalp our aty, our writing as training data, all without permission. Any time someone asks for a generatave output 'in the style of' a known artist, they are being used (or else why make the request), and the creator has no way to opt out. Think of how many musicans have had to sue to stop political causes they despise using their music in campeghn events. Think of how an actor or a writer's career can be damaged by the wrong project, or reputation by working for the wrong person. THAT is what they mean to take from us "Oh no, it wasnt you it was just trained on you". Remember the flack Scarlet Johansen got for plaing Kusinagi in the GITS live-action? How long before AI gets good enough, and contracts clever enough that its hard to prove that no, that actor didnt take the role, and the company AIed them in any way?

WestJet and JetBlue founder commits to order 60 A220s for new U.S. startup airline
One of the founders of WestJet Airlines Ltd. has agreed to purchase 60 Airbus A220 aircraft for a new U.S. venture, marking the second order announcement since Airbus took control of the former CSeries jet program from Bombardier Inc. this month.
David Neeleman, representing a group of investors, signed a memorandum of understanding at the Farnborough Air Show in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, committing to purchasing 60 aircraft for the new airline he is planning to launch in the United States.
Although it is a preliminary agreement, it is the second major deal announcement since Airbus took the reigns of the previously beleaguered CSeries Aircraft Limited Partnership (CSALP) on July 1, nine months after the joint venture between the two aerospace manufacturers was first announced.
“This U.S. airline startup’s decision for the A220 as the platform on which to launch their new business model is a testament to the passenger appeal and operating economics of this outstanding aircraft,” said Airbus’ chief commercial officer Eric Schulz in a statement.
“This commitment confirms the important role the A220 aircraft now occupies in our Airbus single-aisle portfolio.”
Bombardier said in a statement that the company was “very pleased” with the agreement, which “once again shows the value the partnership can bring to the program.”
Neeleman, who is a majority investor in the startup airline that has yet to be formally named, is also currently an investor in Portugal’s TAP airline and a controlling shareholder in Brazil’s Azul airlines. He also was a founder of JetBlue. He said in a statement that he believes improving conditions in the American airline industry will allow a new carrier to emerge.
“The A220 will enable us to serve thinner routes in comfort without compromising cost, especially on longer-range missions,” he said in a statement. “With deliveries starting in 2021, we will have ample time to assemble a world-class management team and another winning business model.”
The deal is worth $5.4 billion, according to list prices, although airlines usually receive significant discounts.
Last week, JetBlue announced it had ordered 60 Airbus A220-300 aircraft with the option to purchase an additional 60, a move analysts said could bolster the program’s ability to secure further orders at the marquee Farnborough Air Show.
Moody’s analyst Jonathan Root said in a report that discount pricing was likely the key factor in JetBlue opting to replace its Embraer E190 jets with the A220.
“Airbus did not disclose the value of the JetBlue order. But the earlier-than-expected announcement, and its timing so soon after the closing of the CSALP transaction with Bombardier and the Canadian province of Quebec, led us to believe that the airline secured a significant discount on the purchase price,” Root said, adding that he estimates the cost could have been $24 to $28 million per aircraft on average, a discount of up to 72 per cent from list prices.
Canada’s Innovation, Science and Economic Development Minister Navdeep Bains, who is at the Farnborough Air Show to promote the Canadian aviation industry, said in an interview earlier this week that one of his goals while in the U.K. was to promote the aircraft formerly known as the CSeries. The Canadian government provided the company with a $372.5 million repayable loan in part to help finance the CSeries program.
“Right now, our No. 1 objective is market access and getting sales happening, because those sales mean more production at the Bombardier facility in Mirabel, Que., and more jobs in the short- and long-term,” Bains said.
“It’s truly an outstanding product, and we want to continue to focus on helping both Bombardier and Airbus sell more A220s.”
RBC Capital Markets analyst Walter Spracklin said in a note to clients on Tuesday that with Airbus at the helm of the program, the aircraft is gaining further traction.
“We expect the (joint venture) will continue to win orders of meaningful size, with longer-term valuation implications owing to Bombardier’s 34 per cent stake,” Spracklin wrote.

Airbus takes control of Bombardier CSeries in rebuff to U.S. threat
MONTREAL/TOULOUSE, France (Reuters) – Airbus has agreed to take a majority stake in Bombardier’s troubled CSeries jetliner program, securing the plane’s future and giving the Canadian firm a possible way out of a damaging trade dispute with Boeing.
Shares in Bombardier leapt more than 20 percent on Tuesday after news of the deal with Europe’s biggest aerospace group.
Airbus will get a 50.01 percent stake in an entity recently carved out of Bombardier to produce and market the CSeries, four years after it first flew with a goal to enter the $125 billion a year market for large jets.
But in a move emblematic of the huge risks of aerospace competition, Bombardier will get just one dollar for the majority stake in exchange for Airbus’s purchasing and marketing power to support an aircraft that has won fans for its fuel efficiency but few recent orders due to doubts over its future.
In reality, the terms of the deal mean Bombardier could pay Airbus to take over by agreeing to underwrite $700 million of risks related to cost overruns in coming years.
“It’s an unexpected move by Airbus but indicates they see good market potential for the CSeries. Neither they nor Boeing currently offer an aircraft in the regional jet market,” said aerospace consultant John Strickland of JLS Consulting.
Airbus shares rose around 5 percent.
The deal is similar to one that Airbus walked away from in 2015 when it decided the investment in a plane that had not yet entered service was too risky – with one major difference: that some of the jets will be produced in the United States.
That could change the power balance in Bombardier’s costly trade dispute with Boeing, though it is not the main reason why the two former rivals have come together, executives said.
The U.S. Commerce Department has threatened a possible 300 percent duty on CSeries jet imports after backing Boeing’s complaint that Bombardier received illegal subsidies and dumped the planes at low prices.
The deal with Airbus now means CSeries jets can be built at Airbus’ Alabama assembly plant, which according to the two companies would exempt them from import duties.
“Assembly in the U.S. can resolve the (tariff) issue because it then becomes a domestic product,” Bombardier’s chief executive, Alain Bellemare, told reporters at Airbus’s headquarters in Toulouse.
Airbus CEO Tom Enders hailed the tie-up as “a win for Canada … a win for the UK,” referring to Bombardier’s wing-making factory in Northern Ireland whose future had been threatened by the distant trade war.
He said it would also create new U.S. jobs.
The deal appeared to catch Boeing off guard. Locked in a separate 13-year trade dispute with Airbus, Boeing called it a “questionable deal” between two of its subsidized competitors.
Bellemare said he hoped the deal would be approved within 6-12 months. Canadian Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains, who must officially decide whether to green-light the deal, said it looked like “Bombardier’s new proposed partnership … would help position the CSeries for success”.
An Airbus A320neo aircraft and a Bombardier CSeries aircraft are pictured during a news conference to announce a partnership between Airbus and Bombardier on the C Series aircraft programme, in Colomiers near Toulouse, France, October 17, 2017. REUTERS/Regis Duvignau
Bombardier, which had not secured a new order in 18 months for the 110-130 seat plane, said the partnership should more than double the value of the CSeries program.
While it will lose control of a project developed at a cost of $6 billion, the deal gives the CSeries improved economies of scale and a better sales network.
For Airbus, the deal strengthens the bottom end of its narrowbody portfolio after poor sales of its own A319 model and expands its global footprint, potentially opening up further deals in other sectors in Canada.
Tony Webber, a former chief economist at Qantas, said the CSeries could complement Airbus’s existing single-aisle models.
STRATEGIC DECISION
Bellemare said the deal was expected to close in the second half of 2018.
“We’re doing this deal here not because of this Boeing petition. We are doing this deal because it is the right strategic move for Bombardier,” he said, referring to Boeing’s complaint that the Canadian firm received illegal subsidies and dumped CSeries planes at “absurdly low” prices.
Bombardier said the deal would not result in job losses and would keep the head office in Montreal and unions said the deal would benefit the program.
The Boeing-Bombardier dispute has snowballed into a bigger multilateral trade dispute, with British Prime Minister Theresa May asking U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene to save British jobs.
Bombardier is the largest manufacturing employer in Northern Ireland and May’s Conservatives rely on the support of the small Northern Irish Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) party for their majority in parliament.
Business Secretary Greg Clark said Britain would work closely with the planemakers, while the DUP said the agreement was “incredibly significant news” for Belfast.
Talks for the deal between Airbus and Bombardier first started over dinner at the end of August.
Enders said the deal was different from an earlier round of talks in 2015, when he abruptly ordered an end to negotiations. He said the CSeries’ had since been certified, entered service and was performing well.
Some analysts said the deal could drive Boeing closer together with Brazil’s Embraer, with which it already cooperates.
Under the deal, Bombardier will own about 31 percent of CSeries Aircraft Limited Partnership (CSALP), which manufactures and sells the jets, while Investissement Québec, the investment arm of the province of Quebec, will hold 19 percent.
Bombardier is in the middle of a five-year turnaround plan after considering bankruptcy because of a cash-crunch as it developed multiple planes simultaneously, including the CSeries.

Former CSeries set for sales liftoff at famed Farnborough Airshow
Last year, Bombardier Inc. left the commercial airline manufacturing industry’s marquee air show without a single sale of its signature CSeries aircraft.
This year, however, prospects for the plane — rebranded as the A220 following the recent close of Airbus SE’s surprise deal to take control of the program — appear to be looking up.
With the weight of the Airbus sales and marketing team and its deep customer support expertise behind the A220, analysts across the board see potential for more orders at the Farnborough Air Show, which begins next week.
A new order announced this week for 60 A220 aircraft from U.S. low-cost carrier JetBlue Airways Corp. only bolsters those prospects, said Robert Kokonis, president of aviation consulting firm AirTrav Inc.
“Having a marquee client like JetBlue — no different from when Delta and Air Canada put their orders in — is huge because it’s an established, leading low-cost carrier. This is big news,” Kokonis said in an interview.
“I suspect if there’s any customer that’s been thinking about ordering it, they are going to do it in Farnborough.”

Amid hits to reputation, Bombardier's rail division remains key to turnaround plan
'We truly apologize': Bombardier execs address Toronto streetcar flaws before TTC
Last year at the Paris Air Show, which alternates years with Farnborough, Montreal-based Bombardier’s biggest win was an order for up to 50 Q400 aircraft from India’s Spicejet, one that boosted the stability of that program, but did nothing to instill confidence in the CSeries.
The lack of sales, combined with a trade dispute with the Boeing Co. that was just gearing up, even put the future of the CSeries program in doubt.
Credit Suisse analyst Robert Spingarn wrote in a note to clients that he expects the A220 to take centre stage at Farnborough. This year’s event, he wrote, “could be an attractive entry point for airlines that have lingered on the sidelines, given greater clarity on the future of the program.”
Goldman Sachs analyst Noah Poponak said the JetBlue sale was a positive for Bombardier, and expects it to be the first of many new orders for the program under Airbus’ ownership.
“The order announcement comes in the second week following Airbus taking ownership of the program, which reinforces our view that the partnership will contribute to the long-term success potential of the program,” Poponak wrote in a note to clients this week.
“It also suggests that Airbus is aggressively pushing sales of the aircraft, and we see the potential for more orders at the Farnborough Airshow next week.”
Airbus officially took the reigns of the previously beleaguered CSeries Aircraft Limited Partnership (CSALP) on July 1, nine months after the blockbuster joint venture was first announced. The partnership between the two aerospace manufacturers was touted as providing much-needed stability for Bombardier, even though it gives the company a smaller stake in the program.
Richard Aboulafia, an aviation analyst and vice-president at Teal Group, points to the Airbus partnership as one of the factors that secured the JetBlue order.
“The things that were holding JetBlue up were concerns about an orphaned product, product support and things like that,” he said in an interview. “I think this is as close as you’ll get to proof that the Airbus brand and reassurance is going to mean a lot for this program.”
He also expects more orders to follow.
“This is that plane’s show, starting with JetBlue and probably continuing with more,” he said. “It’s looking absolutely great.”
At the same time, Aboulafia said the Farnborough Air Show would provide Bombardier with an opportunity to show its commitments to the remaining products within its commercial aircraft division — the CRJ and Q400. The CRJ in particular, says Aboulafia, is in need of a revamp. He also said that Bombardier’s recent decision to sell off its Downsview site, where the Q400 is assembled, potentially raises questions about whether the company is looking to secure larger order volumes.
“I’m not expecting a lot of commercial activity, but this would be a good opportunity for Bombardier to show a commitment to those products if they intend to do that,” Aboulafia said. “An announcement about upgrades, or any kind of product refresh plan, that would be something to watch for.”
