My College Courses
In this post, I’ve typed up my full list of college courses organized by Smith’s seven major fields of knowledge (used for Latin Honors). You can also check out my courses page to see them organized by semester.
As an engineering and computer science double major, it was unsurprising that my top categories were Mathematics and Analytical Philosophy {M} and Natual Science {N}. In fact, two-thirds of my credits (120/179) carried either the {M} or the {N} designation. Note that my three UMass computer science courses (marked with asterixis) weren’t technically assigned Latin Honors designations, but I’ve categorized them with an {M} as nearly all Smith computer science majors hold that designation.
While the vast majority of my courses were for one of both of my majors, I am proud to say that I took a total of 50 credits that were completely outside of both majors. Over the course of my time at Smith, I took courses from 13-16 different departments. The exact number depends on if you count psychology or not as I took a course cross-listed between both philosophy and psychology. Furthermore, FYS (first-year seminars) and IDP (inter/extradepartmental) courses fall outside of the set departments so are tricky to count.
Next to each category, I’ve included a percentage that measures the percentage of my credits earned for the given category. Note that the percentages don’t actually sum to 100% as six of my courses held two distinct designations. I’ve marked these courses using the caret and inverted caret symbols.

The Role of CSCS Cards in Reducing Construction Industry Accidents and Fatalities
The construction industry is a high-risk industry, where accidents and fatalities are unfortunately common. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), there were 111 fatal injuries in the construction industry in the UK in 2019/20. This number highlights the importance of health and safety in the construction industry and the need for measures that can help prevent accidents and fatalities. One of the key measures that can help reduce construction industry accidents and fatalities is the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card. CSCS cards are designed to provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications, as well as the necessary health and safety knowledge to carry out their work safely. By requiring workers to hold a CSCS card, the construction industry can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities on site.
Cscs green card Here are some of the ways in which CSCS cards can contribute to reducing accidents and fatalities in the construction industry: ⦁ Enhanced Training and Qualifications CSCS cards are only issued to individuals who have completed the necessary training and qualifications for their job role. This means that workers holding a
⦁ CSCS green card are more likely to have the skills and knowledge necessary to carry out their work safely and effectively, reducing the likelihood of accidents and fatalities on site. ⦁ Improved Health and Safety Knowledge To obtain a CSCS card, individuals must pass the cscs green labourer card course. This test is designed to assess an individual’s health and safety knowledge, ensuring they have a good understanding of the risks and hazards on a construction site. Workers holding a CSCS card are, therefore, more likely to be aware of the dangers and risks present on a construction site, making them better equipped to avoid accidents and prevent injuries. ⦁ Greater Compliance with Health and Safety Regulations By requiring workers to hold a CSCS card, construction companies are showing their commitment to health and safety, and to complying with health and safety regulations. This not only helps to create a safer working environment but also helps to avoid fines and legal action that could arise from non-compliance with health and safety regulations. ⦁ Increased Accountability CSCS cards help to increase accountability on construction sites. If an accident does occur, workers holding a CSCS card can be more easily identified and held accountable for their actions. This helps to promote a culture of safety and encourages workers to be more cautious and vigilant on-site. In conclusion, CSCS cards play a vital role in reducing construction industry accidents and fatalities. By ensuring that workers have the necessary training, qualifications, and health and safety knowledge to carry out their work safely, the construction industry can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and fatalities on site. Therefore, it is important that all workers on construction sites hold a valid CSCS card, and that construction companies continue to prioritize health and safety in the workplace.

hey! im planning on being a computer science major at smith for the class of 2025. Is getting ap comp sci credit super helpful or are the intro classes for comp sci at smith not too bad to go through? I know at other colleges they are the pain so skipping them with comp sci ap credit is vital. Thank you!
Hi there! I took AP Comp Sci A in high school, so I personally found CSC 111 to be rather easy, so if you also already have a strong foundation with coding Python or Java, I think CSC 111 will also be rather easy and repetitive. I ended up still taking 111 just because I wanted a refresher and I still ended up learning some new things anyway. But it is ultimately up to you though! - Aneliz ‘23

Hi Emily! I’m interested in taking CSC 111 and hearing about your experience with it. How is it for someone with no programming experience, and what was the class like? Also, are there any other interesting comp sci courses to take at Smith? Thank you so much
Hi! CSC111 is very beginner friendly, I had zero programming experience before taking it and did very well. There are office hours and TA hours if you need help; in fact, I am one of the TAs for this course. When I took it, there was a heavy emphasis on pair programming, which basically means I met up with my partner every week to do the homework assignment on one computer, and most of the course material was based on the lecture rather than the book. Nowadays, I've heard that they found a better textbook that they use instead but it's still a very structured around weekly homework and lab assignments. In regards to other courses, I really enjoyed CSC220 Advanced Programming Techniques and am looking forward to the seminar I am taking next semester on AI and natural language understanding. Hope this helps!

Calculus math

Calculus math full#
Normally, all courses that are counted towards either the major or minor must be taken for a letter grade.Īn honors project consists of directed reading, investigation and a thesis. A student may petition the department if she wishes credit for any course not on this list.
Calculus math full#
Note that courses that are cross-listed with mathematics and another department (CSC 250, ECO 220, PHI 202, PHI 203, PHI 220, and SDS 292) are counted as mathematics courses and given full credit toward the mathematics major.Generally, such a 4-credit course will be given 2 credits toward the mathematics major. Courses taken outside the department must contain either substantial mathematical content at a level more advanced than MTH 211 and 212 or statistical content at a level more advanced than MTH 220.With the approval of the department, up to 8 of the credits may be satisfied by courses taken outside the mathematics and statistics department. In total, majors must take at least 36 credits among courses numbered at or above 153, with the following exceptions:.An advanced course is a mathematics course at Smith numbered between 310 and 390. Majors are required to take at least one advanced course. Students intending to declare a major after Fall '22 do not have this option and are advised to pursue a MST Major (Mathematical Statistics). Alternatively, students declaring a math major before Fall '22 may focus on statistics students pursuing this track through the major are not required to take a course in algebra but instead must complete MTH 220, MTH 246, MTH 320, and either MTH 291 or MTH 290. The core requirement consists of one course in algebra (MTH 233 or MTH 238) and one course in analysis (MTH 280 or MTH 281). Some of these requirements might be waived for a well-prepared student. The foundation requirement consists of MTH 111, MTH 112, MTH 153, MTH 211, and MTH 212. The mathematics major has a foundation requirement, a core requirement, a depth requirement and a total credit requirement. Relearning Python
This coming semester I will be taking a digital circuits course that has a Python prerequisite. Students typically meet this requirement by taking Smith’s introduction to computer science through programming (CSC 111). Given my prior background in computer science, I had previously tested out of CSC 111. The placement test was in Java as it’s designed for folks like myself who took AP computer science A. (To read more about my AP experience, click here). In other words, placing out of CSC 111 requires a knowledge of computer science and programming but not necessarily of Python. Fortunately, Python is a relatively easy programming language that I first learned in a semester-long course in ninth grade. To read more about my academic journey into engineering and computer science, click here. My Python was a bit rusty so I took some time over the past week to relearn the basics. Last summer I used Python for a portion of Harvard’s CS50X. (You can read my extensive review of that course, here). I also used Python earlier this year while testing problems for the programming contest I helped design. With that said, I just translated my Java code into Python code rather than writing solutions from scratch in Python.
It’s really easy to get started learning Python as there are many high-quality free online courses that assume no prior knowledge. The flip side of this is that it is harder to find good introductory resources for folks like myself who already have a decent familiarity with programming and know what variables and functions are. I started off by watching the latest version of the CS50 Python lecture. This was a good reintroduction to the basic syntax of Python from an understanding of the C programming language. Next, I coded some simple programs on CodingBat. This is a great resource that I used when first learning Python. CodingBat is an even better Java resource that I used to prepare for Smith’s computer science placement test. I made sure to occasionally check the sample solution (after solving the problem myself) in order to be reminded of Python-specific “shortcuts.” My main learning resource was Google’s Python Class. This class hit the sweet spot of being neither super-advanced nor for total beginners. The course consisted of written notes, lecture videos, and exercises. Compared to other free online courses I have taken, this course was more self-directed and is more of a quick crash course than a full class. The main downside is that it’s a bit outdated and teaches Python 2 rather than Python 3. Overall, I feel much more prepared for my circuits class and had lots of fun coding in Python over the past week.

I'm an entering freshman and want to fulfill the Latin Honors requirements while at Smith. Humanities are my strong suit and I'm concerned about the mathematics and analytic philosophy portion as well as the natural sciences. Do you have any course recommendations that might allow for a smoother entrance for those areas of study?
Hi there and welcome to Smith! For math/statistics, the ‘easiest’ courses are MTH 102 (elementary functions) and MTH 107 (statistical thinking). If you scroll down to ‘courses’ on the Math & Stats page, linked here, you can see what the Math department has to say about what might be a good fit for you. Some other first year level course that count for the mathematics and analytic philosophy latin honors distribution are CSC 111 (Intro computer science) and LOG 100 (Intro logic - Valid and Invalid Reasoning: What Follows From What?). For your natural science distribution requirement, I’ve heard a lot of good things about the intro geosciences courses - GEO 101 (Introduction to Earth Processes and History), GEO 102 (Exploring the Geologic Landscape), and GEO 104 (Global Climate Change) are the three being offered in the fall, but there are others offered in different semesters. Also, Intro Psychology (PSY100) counts for a natural science and so do some first year seminars! Hope this helps.

CSC to honor heroes in civil service in Bicol
#PHinfo: CSC to honor heroes in civil service in Bicol
LEGAZPI CITY (PIA) — In observance of the 119th Philippine Civil Service Anniversary (PCSA), the Civil Service Commission in Bicol (CSC-5) will honor four government workers in Bicol who died while performing their jobs.
The four who will be recognized with the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani are the former CSC-5 regional director and three police officers who died while in the line of duty.
CSC-5 Information Officer Ronba Jane Nuñez said a former livestock inspector in Sorsogon province who also died in line of duty will be also awarded soon under the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani.
The Pamanang Lingkod Bayani seeks to recognize public servants whose dedication to duty came at the price of their lives.
It covers all permanent civilian employees of the government including the non-uniformed personnel of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police.
CSC conducts annual fund raising activity like fun run or Zumba during the celebration of PCSA to fund the program because the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani comes not only with the recognition befitting a hero, but monetary support to the awardee’s family as well.
That is why the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani has three components, namely, the Pamanang Parangal sa Lingkod Bayani, Pamanang Lingkod Bayani Iskolarship, and Pondong Pamanang Lingkod Bayani.
Under the Pamanang Parangal sa Lingkod Bayani, a beneficiary is recognized through a posthumous award or citation in the form of a plaque signed by the chairman of the Civil Service Commission.
On the other hand, the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani Iskolarship is awarded to the three immediate family members of the deceased civil servant wherein they can avail themselves of a baccalaureate, masteral or doctoral degree scholarship.
It will be in the form of discounts on tuition and school fees. The first beneficiary will receive 100 percent; second beneficiary, 75 percent; and third beneficiary, 50 percent.
They can enroll in any of the 111-member institution of the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (PASUC).
The CSC also provides a one-time financial assistance determined by the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani Executive Committee depending on the availability of funds under the Pondong Pamanang Lingkod Bayani.
Meanwhile, acceptance of nomination for the Pamanang Lingkod Bayani is continuing. Nuñez encouraged government agencies to submit endorsement or nomination for Pamanang Lingkod Bayani. (PIA-5)

DOWN TO THE SEA IN SHIPS: Heady Days For Canadian Naval Procurement
(Volume 25 Issue 3)
By David Pugliese
There’s a good chance that this year’s CANSEC will be easily dominated by companies hoping to sell naval defence products to Canada.
With the federal government’s shipbuilding program in full swing – and a number of related major projects waiting in the wings – potential suppliers for the Royal Canadian Navy can use CANSEC 2018 as the premier vehicle to highlight their systems.
The defence and security trade show will be held this year on May 30-31 at its usual location at the EY Centre, near Ottawa’s international airport.
The future prize of Canada’s naval defence procurement is unquestionably the Canadian Surface Combatant (CSC), a $60 billion project estimated to provide years of work for as many as 80 domestic companies and whichever consortium is selected as the winning team.
Many of those firms will be highlighting their potential role in CSC at CANSEC 2018.
Three bids have been submitted to the Canadian government and Irving Shipbuilding for the CSC program.
Among the formal bids is the one from Lockheed Martin Canada, who will be the prime on the team that includes BAE Systems, CAE, L3 Technologies, MDA, and Ultra Electronics.
The team is offering the BAE Type 26 warship for the Canadian program.
The proposal includes Lockheed Martin Canada’s combat management system, CMS 330, which is currently on board the modernized Halifax-class frigates. A scaled down version of the system will be used on the Royal Canadian Navy’s new Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship fleet.
At its CANSEC 2018 booth, Lockheed plans to have a large-scale model of the Type 26 on display, company officials say. The firm sees the Type 26 as very low risk and is adaptable to accept various systems including the CMS 330.
Lockheed’s CSC team will also be emphasized at the trade show. CAE is involved in training, MDA has engineering and manufacturing capability, Ultra provides underwater warfare systems and L3 has a range of defence and electronic products.
In addition, Canadian companies such as W.R. Davis Engineering in Ottawa, Rolls-Royce in Peterborough and L3 MAPPS in Montreal have already begun work on delivering high-technology systems for the UK’s Type 26.
Alion Science and Technology, along with its subsidiary Alion Canada, submitted their proposal based on the Dutch De Zeven Provinciën Air Defence and Command (LCF) frigate. That frigate is a proven NATO vessel built by Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding.
Underlying the Alion offering is its focus on affordability, risk reduction and Canadian content, grounded in nearly 50 years of experience designing and producing combatants.
Alion’s combat system solution to be highlighted at CANSEC 2018, is based on the world-class capabilities of ATLAS-Elektronik and Hensoldt Sensors. ATLAS brings a renowned open architecture Combat Management System that readily accepts new and evolving technologies, officials with the team point out. Hensoldt’s capability and experience in developing and fielding state-of-the art radars was central to meeting the unique Canadian requirements with a fielded, non-developmental radar. Other key suppliers for the team include L3 Technologies Canada, Raytheon Canada Limited, DRS Technologies Canada Limited (DRS TCL) and Rheinmetall Canada Inc.
ATLAS- Elektronik Canada of Victoria, BC is also promoting its SeaSpider system, which can be offered to the RCN as an Anti-Torpedo-Torpedo. The company points out that SeaSpider is the world’s first dedicated Anti-Torpedo-Torpedo (ATT) and is capable of being used to counter threats against submarines or ships. It can operate in both deep and shallow water; the company also points out that the weapon system is deliberately designed to be affordable for navies in procurement and operation.
Navantia of Spain is leading a team that includes Saab Australia and CEA Technologies. Its proposal is based on the F-105 frigate design, a ship in service with the Spanish navy.
Saab, which would provide the combat management system, has support on the CSC program from Lockheed Martin (Moorestown, New Jersey), General Dynamic Mission Systems - Canada, DRS Technologies Limited Canada, OSI Maritime Service and Rheinmetall Canada, according to Navantia.
Fincantieri of Italy and Naval Group of France offered Canada the consortium’s FREMM frigate design. But the firms did not submit a bid to Irving via the CSC procurement process. Instead the companies made their proposal direct to the Canadian government, noting that they could save significant amounts of money because their ship is in production and the production costs are well established. That proposal was rejected by the Liberal government.
Naval Group (formerly DCNS) nonetheless continues to maintain a significant presence in Canada.
Davie Shipbuilding and its affiliate Federal Fleet Services have had a run of successful ventures to highlight at CANSEC 2018.
Their Project Resolve, the program to provide an interim refueling and supply vessel for the Royal Canadian Navy, rolled out without any hitches.
Canadian sailors have trained on the Motor Vessel (MV) Asterix and a crew provided by Federal Fleet Services will operate the 26,000-tonne Asterix. Navy personnel will be on board to handle maritime operations such as refueling warships at sea.
By the time CANSEC 2018 has started the Asterix will already be accompanying Canadian warships on international operations, with preparations for addition missions such as the U.S.-led Rim of the Pacific exercise scheduled to start in July.
As of press time, the companies are also in negotiations with the federal government about a plan to convert several former oil industry vessels into icebreakers for the Canadian Coast Guard.
Under the proposal the icebreakers, originally built for Shell and other companies for use in Arctic operations, would be brought to Davie shipyards for upgrades to allow them to be used by the Coast Guard.
MV Aiviq, Polar-class icebreaker, was originally built in the US and the other three, built in Norway, are considered medium icebreakers.
If the deal goes through expect it to be a highlight at CANSEC 2018.
Irving will soon be unveiling the first Arctic Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS), an opportunity for some CANSEC exhibitors to point out their achievements on the project. GE’s Marine Solutions business in Peterborough, Ont. has a multi-year contract with Irving to provide electrical power, propulsion systems, installation and commissioning services for the AOPS. GE’s power and propulsion systems will position the new vessels amongst the highest performance in their class worldwide, company officials point out.
CANSEC exhibitor Seaspan Shipyards is riding high on its successful launch of the first large vessel to be designed and built under the Canadian government’s National Shipbuilding Strategy. OFSV1 is the first of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels (OFSV) to be built by Seaspan. OFSV1 is a 63-metre Canadian Coast Guard fisheries research vessel. The ship will be used to gain a better understanding of the health of fish stocks and their ocean environment. OFSV1 is the first of three OFSV ships built by Seaspan, with considerable progress made on the remaining two ships. Seaspan, of course, is well known in the Canadian defence industry as it has been selected to build the Joint Supply Ships for the RCN and a new Polar-class icebreaker for the Canadian Coast Guard.
Rheinmetall Canada is known for its land-based defence systems, particularly its fully digital and stabilized remotely controlled weapon stations. But it also has a footprint in the naval realm. The Nanuk weapon station produced for the Canadian Army’s LAV-111s has been navalized for the RCN. One prototype has been installed and tested successfully on board HMCS Goose Bay.
CANSEC exhibitor MBDA has and continues to promote its Aster missile system as an air defence option for the CSC. If selected the firm has noted it would offer a manufacturing and production facility in Canada. Aster 15 is a short to medium range missile and Aster 30 is a short to long range, so the company has various options for the RCN. In addition, MBDA offers CAMM-ER (Common Anti-air Modular Missile Extended Range).
Other firms in Canada’s defence industry have recent successful export deals to highlight. NovAtel of Calgary has had success with its unique technology on the international naval market. It recently announced that its GPS Anti-Jam Technology or GAJT has been selected for the United Kingdom’s Type 26 frigates to meet a requirement as part of a protected navigation system. GAJT protects GPS-based navigation and precise timing receivers from intentional jamming and accidental interference, ensuring that the satellite signals necessary to compute position and time are always available. It is a commercial off-the-shelf product, and comes in versions suitable for land, sea, fixed installations and smaller platforms such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Rolls-Royce Canada also has its latest win on the international stage to highlight at CANSEC. It has won a contract with BAE Systems for its mission bay handling technology for the UK Royal Navy’s Type 26 frigates. The contract covers the first three ships - the first of which is currently under construction at the BAE Systems Glasgow shipyard, Scotland, according to Rolls-Royce Canada.
Equipment designed for the Royal Canadian Navy has also sparked export orders. Leonardo DRS, Inc. has highlighted that its Canadian subsidiary, DRS Technologies Canada, Ltd., has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Navy to provide four additional Integrated Voice Communications Systems (IVCS) for their Aegis cruisers and destroyers. The award is part of the U.S. Navy’s larger IVCS contract.
The IVCS, also known as the Shipboard Integrated Communications System, or SHINCOM, on board various RCN vessels.
CANSEC exhibitor Raytheon Canada Limited has a new contract to highlight at the trade show. Raytheon Canada is overhauling and providing in-service support for the Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems operated by the Royal Canadian Navy.
Raytheon produces Phalanx, a rapid-fire, computer-controlled radar and 20mm gun system that automatically acquires, tracks and destroys enemy threats that have penetrated other ship defense systems. More than 890 systems have been built for navies around the world.
“The Phalanx CIWS is an integral element of the Canadian Navy’s defence,” Terry Manion, RCL vice-president and general manager, said in a statement. “This contract supports modernization work that will keep these systems ready and relevant well into the future.”
Under the $330 million contract by Public Services and Procurement Canada, RCL, working with Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services, will provide maintenance, fleet technical support, repair and overhaul services on the Phalanx mounts which will ensure the systems are ready to address current and emerging threats.
Work under the contract, valid until late 2037, was announced in late January by Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan. It will be conducted in Raytheon Canada Limited›s Calgary facilities.
The contract will update all 21 Phalanx CIWS and provide engineering services, project management, support and disposal services, as well as the procurement of spares and test equipment.
