eSports event
As discussed by Cranmer et al. (2021) electronic sports popularly known as eSports is a type of gaming where players and teams compete professionally in the field of video games mostly by tournaments. Unlike traditional sports, esports focus on using quick reflexes, strategic thinking and the movements of bottoms to outduel one another (Ridenhour, 2020). Examples of esports include Fortnite, NBA 2k, Dota 2 and Counter strike.

The origin of esports dates back to the 1970's however, the sport gained attraction in the early 2000's and has since been a mainstay among major sporting tournaments. The sport has transcended into a global spectacle capturing millions of fans across the world with substantial prize pools.
The media perspective of esports has grown together with the sport with big name television networks such as ESPN and BBC covering major esports tournaments. Betting companies such as Bet365 and Sports bet regularly feature odds of esports games on their respective platforms. This continuous exposure, following and audience has legitimised esports claim as a main form of entertainment next to traditional sports (Debusmann, 2021).
The academic standpoint on esports has diverse and varied opinions. Just like the sport itself, researchers and scholars has been attracted to the rise in popularity of esports. There have been studies on mental and physical stress associated with stakeholders of the sport (Palanichamy et al., 2020). More studies have been conducted on factors such as reaction times of players, hand-eye coordination and the cognitive abilities of players or teams. Further research has been conducted on factors such as decision-making skills of players, stress management and cohesion among team members (Conroy et al., 2021). Academies continue to prioritize the development of new software and technologies to enhance the sport. The use of artificial intelligence, virtual reality and augmented reality continue to be studied by scholars to creative a memorable, immersive and enjoyable experiences for patrons. The academic experts continue to explore the marketing and commercial aspects of esports finding new and innovative ways to generate revenue, increase sponsorship deals and increase fan engagement (Kleps, 2021).

In conclusion, esports have come a long way since its inception in the early 1970's. Its evolution has resulted in acquisition of sponsors, new fanbases and increased exposure among other sporting circles. Alumni Spotlight: Alessandro Russo
1. What first piqued your interest in the Italian language and why did you decide to get an MA in Italian Studies?   
My parents immigrated from Naples, Italy and our regional language Neapolitan was always spoken in the house, among my parents, grandmother, siblings, and aunts. Although not standard Italian, this imbued within me a strong connection to Italy and an interest in knowing more about the country of my ancestors, especially during my teenage and early adult years. I began immersing myself in Italian music, films, magazines, and books to familiarize myself with Italian culture and develop an ear for standardized Italian. I also took my first college courses in beginning and intermediate Italian at local colleges to enhance my knowledge of Italian language and culture. I worked in the public sector for many years afterwards and was not able to formally study Italian though I continued to engage with anything Italian including making friends and acquaintances with other Italians and Italian Americans. It wasn’t until I began attending Cal State Long Beach and spoke to Dr. Carlo Chiarenza who encouraged me to change my major to Italian. Soon after I met with Dr. Clorinda Donato who heard my spoken Italian and immediately boosted my confidence that I could pursue an Italian BA. Dr. Donato changed my major that day and that is when I seriously began to study Italian Language, Culture and Literature more in-depth. When Dr. Donato became the George L. Graziadio Chair of Italian Studies, she hired me to be her assistant. At the time, the MA in Italian Studies did not yet exist though Dr. Donato had been working very hard on a proposal to create the program. I played a small part in assisting her during the process. She gave me the awesome responsibility of helping create the survey piece and writing its executive summary which was included in the final proposal. The MA in Italian Studies became a reality in Fall 2014 and I immediately enrolled. I was the second graduate of the program. All thanks to the extraordinary professors who mentored and encouraged me which include Dr. Clorinda Donato, Dr. Enrico Vettore, Dr. Carlo Chiarenza and Dr. Pasquale Palmieri.
2. You are Italian-American, do you have friends and family in Italy that you visit or speak with often? 
I have a vast network of relatives and friends in Italy that I communicate with often and visit as often as I can. The largest of which is my mother’s side as she was the only member of her family to immigrate to the United States. My cousins and their spouses along with my three siblings have a WhatsApp group where we often talk to each other. It helps keep the family close even if far away. I also have connections to more distant relatives on my father’s side with whom I stay connected. This includes my second cousin who I have vacationed with often and whose home I stay in when I’m in Italy. While pursuing my MA in Italian Studies we had a Visiting Fulbright Scholar Dr. Pasquale Palmieri with whom I developed a friendship. I was also able to attend his wedding in Caserta, Italy in 2018.
3. You currently work at CSU Long Beach for the Economics department, what kind of work do you do there?
My title is Administrative Analyst/Specialist so I’m basically the operational manager for the department. I handle most all aspects of the administrative functions of the department. My responsibilities include fiscal spending and budgeting, faculty travel, classroom scheduling, curriculum submissions (new and updates) including catalog updates, hiring of lecturers and student employees, assisting with tenure-track faculty searches and collection and maintenance of department materials and data, to name a few. We staff members are like the spokes on a wheel that provides the support and stability for the campus to run 365 days a year.
4. What has been your fondest memory at CSU Long Beach so far (as a student or staff member)? 
I have so many fond memories as both a student and a staff member. However, if I have to pick one it would be the last day of my master’s degree comprehensive exams. This was the day of the oral examination where I was interviewed by Dr. Donato and Dr. Vettore on what I had written during the two-day comprehensive exams. The oral exam had just finished and they asked me to step out in the hallway. I was so nervous and practically jumping out of my skin when another faculty member walked by and saw how anxious I appeared. This other faculty member told me not to worry and that I will be called any minute back into the room. At that moment, Dr. Vettore peered out of the room and solemnly asked me back into the room while gesturing with his finger. I apprehensively walked into the room as Dr. Donato threw her hands up and exclaimed “Congratulazioni!!” and Dr. Vettore smiled and said “Alessandro Russo virgola M.A.!” (Alessandro Russo comma M.A.). I breathed a sigh of relief and a feeling of profound pride and accomplishment came over me. I was so happy to have shared that moment with two of the professors I hold in such high regard. As I left the room all the pent up nervous energy was lifted and I was floating on cloud nine. I immediately called my family to tell them the good news.
5. What is something unique about yourself that you would like to share?My family often asks me to sing Neapolitan songs at parties, especially at weddings. My dad had always been the go-to for singing at family functions where he would belt out songs like “’O Sole Mio” or “Torna ‘a Surriento”. When my family discovered I could hold a tune like my dad, I inadvertently took his place after his passing. I’m often joined by all my cousins as I lead into “’O Sole Mio” though I prefer “’O Surdato ‘Nnammurato” or subtle ballads such as “Reginella” . I am very proud of my “napoletanità” that I have always immersed myself in the language, history, culture and traditions of my ancestors. So much so that I have involved myself in genealogy and discovered that my great grandfather Raffaele Russo was a Bersagliere (member of the Italian army infantry corps) during The Capture of Rome on September 20, 1870 that was the final event of the unification of Italy (Risorgimento) and around 1820 his grandfather Giuseppe Russo (my 3rd great-grandfather) was a royal horseman for Ferdinand II of Bourbon, King of the Two Sicilies. My family roots run very deep in Naples.

Romarilyn Ralston
Romarilyn Ralston is Executive Director and former Program Director (2016-2022) of Project Rebound. She identifies as a black feminist abolitionist with an incarceration experience. She also chair’s the CSU Project Rebound Consortium Policy & Advocacy Committee. Romarilyn Ralston earned a Bachelor’s degree in Gender & Feminist Studies from Pitzer College and a Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from Washington University in St. Louis after 23 years of incarceration. Romarilyn is especially focused on building power, sharing space, and empowering systems-impacted BIPOC women and other justice-involved sisters from all backgrounds through the transformative power of post-secondary education and community-building. She is a long-time member and organizer with the California Coalition for Women Prisoners and serves on the leadership committee.  Romarilyn sits on the several national Board including the Alliance for Higher Education in Prison and Freedom Reads also known as the Yale Million Book Project. In 2022, Ralston received a full pardon from Governor Gavin Newsom.

She is the recipient of Pitzer College’s 2020 Distinguished Alumni Award, California State Senator Ling Ling Chang’s 2020 Woman of Distinction Social Justice Champion Award, and the 2018 Civil Rights and Advocacy Award from the Orange County Chapter of the National Council of 100 Black Women. Ralston was a 2018 Fellow of the  Women's Policy Institute , where as a member of the criminal justice reform team she helped to pass several pieces of legislation into law. William H. Roberts
History Scholarship Fund
CSU friends and alumni provide the foundation for many academic programs and scholarships that benefit Cleveland State University and its students. The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to recognize William “Bill” Roberts, a CSU alumnus and Project 60 student, for continuing his commitment to providing significant financial support to our history students.

Through the William H. Roberts History Scholarship Fund, Bill will provide a full in-state tuition scholarship annually and some funding for books and academic materials to a junior, senior, or graduate student in the history department. To qualify for the scholarship, students must achieve a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need; the scholarship may be renewable as long as the recipient maintains these criteria. Along with proving that they meet these criteria, the student must submit an essay. Bill has committed to continue this support through the 2024-25 academic year.
This is the second such commitment that Bill has made. His first provided full in-state tuition scholarships to history students from 2015-2020. In addition, Bill established an immediate-use scholarship for students studying abroad, which he will continue through the 2022-23 academic year. Bill studied at Cambridge, Oxford, and Jerusalem University. He so appreciated these experiences that he wanted to ensure current students also have the opportunity to study abroad to advance their education.
Bill earned his MA in Education and his BA in History from CSU. An avid life-long learner, Bill has enrolled in several courses as a Project 60 student. He has especially enjoyed classes in subjects that he did not study as a student, including astrology, geology, philosophy, art appreciation, anthropology, and upper-level English classes. When Bill first came back to campus as a Project 60 student, he was amazed at CSU’s growth. “I am very impressed with the new CSU,” Bill remarked. “The growth has been phenomenal. When I started at CSU, there were only a few buildings; now the campus carries an impressive footprint in Cleveland.”
Being on campus and sitting alongside students in class prompted Bill’s interest in creating immediate use scholarship funds. One of the things he appreciates most about contributing to this scholarship is getting to know the recipients and learning how the scholarship affects their lives and education. “I appreciate the education I received at CSU and decided it was time to give back. I am honored to help current CSU students achieve their dream of graduating from college and becoming contributing members of society.” Dylan Rutherford, a junior majoring in history and recipient of this year’s Roberts Scholarship, said, “I am incredibly appreciative of this opportunity. This has truly been one of the highlights of my college experience, and I aspire to continue my education until there is no topic left undiscovered. Your generosity will never be forgotten nor overlooked.”
CLASS Interim Dean Allyson Robichaud stated, “We are so grateful to Bill for continuing this level of financial support to our students. It is through our partnership with alumni and donors like Bill that we can maintain our commitment to excellence in education and ensure our students’ success.”

College while working.
When I was teaching at a small university I had many students who were optimistic about their ability to pay off their education. They said things like, “Professor Collins once I’m out of college I’ll be able to pay off the loans in a year or two.” I still run into students after over a decade who are still paying off their loans. The theme I get from students is that they didn’t anticipate other factors in life interfering with them paying off student loans. They get that job they wanted and have to move far away. The expenses put them behind. Then marriage, kids, or a house….or answer D all of the above happen.
One thing I’ve noticed in the private sector is that many people who pursue education with low student loan debt or no student loan debt at all was that they worked while being a student. This leads to different times in which they graduate, but they show lower student loan debt and better career/life management skills. I sat down and talked with them and they pointed out that one of the best things about how they pursued their education was that they could vary the load of courses when they wanted. When a baby was coming along or they were working on a promotion they could reduce the course work. When things were quiet they could “load up” on courses.
I was surprised to find how many students have used online courses or even complete online colleges to reduce their debt. While working many of my colleagues were able to pay for some courses out of pocket and reduce their debt while still managing a family and career. Here’s a review of some of the online colleges which seem to work for working students who want to reduce debt.
3. Arizona State University. ASU has been the mainstay of online college education. You’ve probably seen their advertisements. One of the models used by ASU that benefits working students is the use of shorter terms. This allows students to focus on one or two classes at a time rather than five courses over a long semester.
2. California Southern University. CSU offers several graduate programs that utilize short terms much like Arizona State University. Aside from low tuition CSU offers extensions (for a fee) of their courses. This is a godsend for students who find themselves overwhelmed and need extra time to complete their course work.
1. Fairport Eastern University. This relatively new online college was designed to support the working student. With both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in everything from psychology to business to engineering Fairport Eastern University has some of the most potential. I’ve worked with a few of their alumni from their computer science program and found them to be excellent software engineers. Of the alumni I talked with, they said one of the best things was not just the reasonable tuition (and no fees), but the fact that their Hub system was designed to get rid of deadlines so that students wouldn’t have to juggle the deadlines imposed by the professor. It works by using a student-paced design. The students get feedback and grades rather quickly, but are never penalized for the time it takes to complete a course. One student told me he completed a course in less than two weeks and then took a few months for a hard course. FEU was designed to prevent students from dropping or failing out because of the balance between work, family, and education.
There are lot of options when deciding to pursue education and career at the same time. As a veteran software engineer I can tell you that time management is one of the most valuable skills. When pursuing higher education, you should research out what will work best with your schedule.

The Cagayan State University (CSU) was established in 1978 as a comprehensive university, combining pre-existing institutions in the province of Cagayan. The university's Charter, signed into law as Presidential Decree No. 1436 by President Ferdinand E. Marcos, aimed to provide better service in professional and technical training in arts, sciences, humanities, technology, and scientific research and technological studies. The university's first officials were Dr. Manuel Corpus from the University of the Philippines and Dr. Joselito Jara as Vice-President for Academic Affairs. The Board of Regents authorized the opening of a College of Medicine, the first in the region, and an agreement with the Cagayan Valley Regional Hospital. The first dean was a nationally recognized neurologist-psychologist, Dr. Gilberto Gamez. Other professional courses followed, including Medical Technology, Engineering, and Liberal Arts. The university has always offered degree programs in "hard sciences" - mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology. Dr. Armando Cortes, then Campus Dean of the Aparri Campus, succeeded Dr. Manuel Corpus as University President. The Bureau of Higher Education under the Department of Education, Culture, and Sports superintended state universities and colleges. Prof. Monserrat Babaran was Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and the university's accreditation system was adopted as a National Compensation Circular. Dr. Eleuterio de Leon was appointed as OIC, Office of the President, and authority was bestowed on Campus Executive Officers to manage their campuses. The College of Medicine earned recognition as the 10th leading school of medicine in the Philippines, offering quality medical education at an affordable cost of hardly over twenty thousand per semester. Dr. Roger Perez, appointed as the next University President, transformed the Andrews Campus with new buildings and introduced the Zero-Tuition Fee scheme. During his presidency, additional academic programs were offered, including Bachelor of Science in Accountancy, Hospitality Industry management, Human Kinetics, Information technology, Police Administration, and Criminology. Dr. Romeo Quilang, former president of Isabela State University, took over the presidency after Dr. Perez's term. He revived links with AACCUP and returned the university's program to the accreditation system. The university submitted to ISO certification and received certified status by Intertek. Dr. Urdujah Alvarado Tejada, a scientist, led the university into systematic planning, training, and orientation. She assembled a team of dedicated officials, conducted seminars on strategic planning, and developed an Executive Training Program for campus executives and directors. Dr. Urduja Alvarado Tejada also recognized outstanding alumni and gave loyalty awards to those who served CSU for 30 years or more. Under her administration, the university articulated its Development Plan.

Celebrating Students from the Spring Class of 2021
The spring class of 2021 have become the most recent alumni of CSU after their commencement ceremony at Progressive Field. Though their ceremonies are over, we want to acknowledge some of the graduates who have overcome great obstacles to achieve their degree! These outstanding graduates are from the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, College of Education and Human Services, and Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
Zuzanna Koziatek
Master of Arts in English, Rhetoric Concentration
Headed to a top-tier doctoral program for English, with a rhetoric concentration, at Indiana University Bloomington, Zuzanna won both outstanding graduate thesis and teaching awards for her Master of Arts in English at CSU. As an immigrant from Poland with little experience with the English language, Zuzanna was still inspired by her enjoyment of literature and writing and took this inspiration to pursue her degree.
“I came to college very young and very confused about the future. I was definitely under the impression that you need to pursue just about any field outside of the humanities in order to be successful,” Zuzanna shared. “Along the way, literature unlocked some of these questions I had and continues to do so to this day.”
Samantha Siepka
Bachelor of Arts in Education as a Mild-Moderate Intervention Specialist
While taking care of her parents, who are suffering from terminal illnesses, Samantha worked through her obstacles with motivation from her family and the strength of her parents. With her determination, Samantha turned around a low GPA and completed her Bachelor of Arts in Education with great recommendations from her professors. She graduated as a Mild-Moderate Intervention Specialist and will be applying for her teaching licensure to assist students with mild to moderate disabilities in a public school system.
“I have a close, tight-knit family and we also have a great support system filled with extended family and friends, and with that we have been able to overcome these crazy challenges that life has handed us,” Siepka shared. “In life, we can’t change the cards that we are dealt in life, but just how we decide to play the hand we are dealt.”
Catelyn Cook
Criminology and Political Science Major, Juris Doctor
After receiving a full ride scholarship to the Mandel Honors College, Catelyn completed her bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Political Science in a year and a half through 18 credit hour semesters and summer classes. Following her completion, Cook enrolled in Cleveland-Marshall College of Law at 18 in August 2018 and received her JD in two and a half years. In December 2020, Cook became the youngest graduate of Cleveland-Marshall’s history at 20 years old. Following her graduation, Cook enrolled in CSU’s School Counseling Master’s Program with inspiration from here interest in school counseling, to help teenagers navigate their experiences while prioritizing mental health needs.
“I am happy to serve as an example of both what women and young students can accomplish when they believe in themselves and reach for the stars,” Catelyn explained. “The most important thing I’ve learned is that with enough motivation and confidence, you can do anything you set your mind to, even if others are in doubt.”
