LET'S TALK ABOUT WALLS & THE K-FAKTORY : HUGE UPDATE :)
For our 500th post, we really had to make something special ... So here we go !
We just finished to post on our website both direct x11 update of our walls and the release of brand new walls :) for a total of 80 walls ... Proof we do not make overrides only :D
OH NO ! A BIT OF MATHS HERE ...
Before the direct x11 update, quality walls were calculated on a base of 1 tile ( 256px ) so we were used to create 3 sizes for each wall ( 768 - 1024 -1280 ) ...
Tumblr media
I scratched a long time my head to search a good soluce to keep the best quality possible ... When you make a very maxis match wall, flat style and so on, you use the same sizes than maxis : 512px ( for 768/3 tiles ) - 512px ( for 1024/4 tiles ) - 1024px ( for 1280/5 tiles )
The problem when you make more realistic walls, ( and even more with bricks and minerals, stone, wood and so on ) is that all textures are stretched as hell : 512 -> 768 - 512 -> 1024 - 1024 -> 1280
We finally decided to make 1 no-destructive size of 1024px for all 3 sizes ... in order to be 100% compliant with direct x11 :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We tested. It is not at all more heavy than our previous direct x9 walls :) and it stretches the tall wall size from only 0.25, which means a few pixels only, same than maxis, and for the short & medium size, the result is much more fine, far away from the maxis match stretch ;) Here some examples :

Boost Accuracy and Efficiency: Mastering Quantity Take-off with BIM
In the fast-paced world of construction and engineering, accuracy and efficiency are paramount. One critical process where these factors come into play is quantity take-off. Traditionally, this task involved manual calculations and measurements from blueprints, which was time-consuming and prone to errors. However, with the advent of Building Information Modeling (BIM), quantity take-off has been revolutionized, leading to significant improvements in both accuracy and efficiency.
Tumblr media
What is Quantity Take-off?
Quantity take-off (QTO) is the process of measuring and listing the quantities of materials required for a construction project. This includes everything from the amount of concrete needed for foundations to the number of bricks for walls. Accurate QTO is essential for budgeting, scheduling, and resource management.
The Challenges of Traditional Quantity Take-off
Traditional QTO methods often rely on manual measurements and calculations, typically performed using 2D drawings. This approach has several drawbacks:
Time-Consuming: Manually measuring and counting materials from drawings can be a labor-intensive and slow process.
Error-Prone: Human error in measurements and calculations can lead to inaccurate estimations, which can cause budget overruns and project delays.
Lack of Integration: Traditional methods do not easily integrate with other project management tools, leading to inefficiencies in data sharing and collaboration.
How BIM Transforms Quantity Take-off
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of a facility. BIM technology brings several advantages to the QTO process:
Automated Quantification: BIM software can automatically extract quantities from the digital model. This reduces the time required for manual measurement and significantly enhances accuracy.
Improved Accuracy: Since BIM models are built using precise geometrical data, the quantities derived from these models are more accurate than those obtained from 2D drawings. This precision helps in better budgeting and resource planning.
Visualization: BIM provides 3D visualizations of the project, making it easier for stakeholders to understand the scope and requirements. This visualization aids in more accurate quantity estimations and helps identify potential issues early.
Integration with Project Management: BIM can integrate with other project management tools, facilitating seamless data sharing and collaboration. This integration ensures that all project stakeholders are working with the most up-to-date information.
Best Practices for Mastering Quantity Take-off with BIM
To fully leverage the benefits of BIM for QTO, consider the following best practices:
Accurate BIM Models: Ensure that your BIM models are detailed and accurate. The quality of the QTO depends on the accuracy of the BIM model. Invest time in creating detailed models that include all necessary components.
Regular Updates: Keep your BIM models updated throughout the project lifecycle. As changes occur, update the model to reflect these changes. This ensures that the QTO remains accurate and relevant.
Training and Expertise: Invest in training for your team to ensure they are proficient in using BIM software. Understanding the tools and features available in BIM software can significantly enhance the efficiency and accuracy of QTO.
Collaboration and Communication: Foster a collaborative environment where all stakeholders can access and contribute to the BIM model. Effective communication ensures that everyone is on the same page and can provide input to improve accuracy.

Long Wall Short Wall Method | Estimation By Long Wall Short Wall Method
Tumblr media
The long wall short wall methods are used to estimate the quantity of different work. In this method, the longer walls in a building (generally in one direction) are considered as long walls and measured from out to out and the shorter walls in a perpendicular direction to the long walls are considered as short walls and are measured from in- to-in for a particular layer of work. These lengths of long and short walls are multiplied separately by the breadth and height of the corresponding layer and are added to get the quantity. Such length of long and short walls varies in every layer of footing. To calculate lengths of long and short walls determine first their center to center lengths individually from the plan. Then the length of the long wall out to out may be calculated after adding half breadth of a wall at each end to its center to center length. Length of the long wall out to out = Centre to center length + half breadth on one side + half breadth on another side. Thus the length of the short wall measured into in may be found by subtracting half breath at each end from its center to center length. Read More: Center Line Method of Building Estimation

4 Essential Considerations before Building a House
Tumblr media
Before starting a house building project, to save time and money, a builder, buyer, or seller, should verify several significant details. To make the job easy, in this blog, we will explain four essential factors that people should consider to ensure that their new home construction process goes as smoothly as possible.
4 important Pre-Construction Tips
Determine The Property Type – First, figure out the space and structural needs. After that, develop the framework while keeping future needs in mind. Consider whether you need to add another floor soon. Take all these requirements into account while selecting raw materials.
Budget - Your new building project should be within your budget. Discuss the cost of the construction work with a contractor before calculating the budget. Include an emergency fund in your budget as well, because, after receiving an estimate, if market prices and economic conditions change, the necessary materials for house building will become more expensive.  If you don't need to use the emergency fund, you can use the funds for anything else, such as furnishing the house once it's built.
Focus on Safety Measures - If you are building a new home, hiring an expert surveyor is an excellent choice. It will ensure the safety of the property in the future. It also prevents you from having to pay a huge amount for any repair job once you move into the new home.
Building Materials - Whether it's cement, concrete, TMT bars, bricks, or any other key building material, remember that compromising on quality might cause significant harm to your home.  Furthermore, many individuals are concerned with the quantity of supplies but fail to evaluate the quality level of fundamental building materials. Thus, to ensure the longevity of your property, please double-check the material before purchase.
Conclusion
Despite reading all of the points, you may not be able to manage or predict everything, but having an expert home-building service provider on your side, such as Elegant Steel, may make things a lot simpler. Aside from the expertise and knowledge necessary for constructing top-notch residences, they are also well-known for their professionalism and dedication to assisting all clients in executing their ideas and delivering superior results beyond expectation.

Subsequent to realizing the 1 meter cube volume we can figure the staying quality effectively by simply increasing the 1 meter cube aftereffect of the ideal volume.
1. The width of the wall which is going to be fabricated. 2. Number of the opening in the wall like (Door,Windows, etc) 3. Size or which sort of the brick going to utilize
We should take a guide to see well.
Model: Assume we need to build the wall having a volume of 1 meter cube, the size a brick is going to utilize is 190 mm x 90 mm and mortar is 8 mm thick with a proportion of 1:4. So, we need to find out the following:
1. Quantity of bricks 2. Quantity of cement 3. Quantity of sand
Given information : This calculation can happen into 2 stages.
1. Brick Calculation 2. Mortar Calculation
Step1: Volume of 1 brick
= 0.19 m x 0.09 m x 0.09 m = 0.001539 meter cube
Volume of 1 brick with mortar = 0.198 m x 0.098 m x 0.098 m = 0.0019 meter cube
No of brick in 1 work = volume/volume of bricks with mortar = 1/0.0019 = 526 bricks
Stage 2: Mortar Calculation
Volume canvassed by 526 bricks in 1 cum volume = (Bricks number x volume of 1 brick) = 526 x 0.001539 = 0.81 meter cube
Mortar Volume = (Total volume – volume of bricks) = 1 – 0.81 = 0.19 meter cube(Wet Volume)
Dry Volume = 0.19 x 1.33 = 0.2527 meter cube(dry volume)
Note: 1.33 is a constant
Cement: = (dry volume x Ratio x Density of cement in 1 cum)/Sum of Ratio = (0.2527 x 1 x 1440)/5 = 72.77 kg/50 <1 sack = 50 kg> = 1.5 sacks
Sand: = (dry volume x proportion x 35.3147) / Sum of ratio(1 cum = 35.3147 cubic feet) = (0.2527 x 4 x 35.3147)/5 = 7.1 cubic feet
Results
Bricks = 526 Cement = 1.5 packs Sand = 7.1 cubic feet
Addendum: These proportions may change by changing the component of the mortar thickness or size of the bricks just as the mortar proportions 1:4, 1:6 and so on.

How to calculate brick masonry & mortar cement, sand?
In this article we will discuss the most easiest way, for brick work calculation, bricks for wall calculation, mortar for brick masonry. If you are seeking an answer to how many bricks do i need or need to find bricks for patio. You landed on right blog.
Masonry is done with either bricks, blocks or stone, but for joinning, same kind of cement mortar is used. For brick masonry analysis one of standard measuring unit is adopted, which is used to calculate bricks and mortar.
There’s mainly two systems, British system & MKS system. British system brick size is 9″×4.5″×3″, on other hand in MKS system 20×10×10 cm. In standard brick masonry there’s 1350 bricks in 100 cubic feet and 500 bricks in 1 cubic meter.
In same manners, for masonry 100 cft bricks it needs 30 cft of dry mortar, while 1 cum brick masonry needs 0.30 cum of dry mortar.
How to calculate brick masonry for 100 cubic feet in mortar ratio (1:5)?
Brick work = 100 cft
Number of bricks used = 1350 (1350 is standard, we mention above)
Ratio of cement mortar = (1:5)
Sum of ratio = 1+5 = 6
Quantity of dry mortar = 30 cft (30 is std also mention above)
How to calculate quantity of cement for mortar?
(Ratio of cement / sum of ratio) × Quantity of mortar
(1/6)×30 = 5cft of mortar = 5/1.25 = 4 bags (1 cement bag volume is 1.25 cft)
How to calculate quantity of sand for mortar?
(Ratio of sand / sum of ratio) × quantity of mortar
(5/6)×30 = 25 cft
or you can do it simply by multiplying cft of cement with ration of sand. Because sand is that much times more than cement.
TOTAL; BRICK= 1350, CEMENT= 4 bags, SAND= 25 cft
Read also calculation of steel.
How to calculate brick masonry for 1 cubic meter in mortar ratio (1:6)?
Brick work = 1 cu.m
Number of bricks = 500
Ratio of cement mortar = 1:6
Sum of ratio = 7
Total quantity of dry mortar = 0.30 cum (std for 1cum B.W)
How to calculate quantity of cement?
(Ratio of cement / sum of ratio) × quantity of mortar
(1/7)×0.30 = 0.043 cu.m
0.043/0.035 = 1.228 cement bags (1 bag of cement is 0.035 cu.m)
How to calculate quantity of sand?
(Ratio of sand / sum of ratio) × quantity of mortar
(6/7) × 0.30 = 0.257 cu.m.
TOTAL; BRICKS= 500, CEMENT= 1.228 BAGS, SAND= 0.257 cu.m

Albert’s Drinking Contest: Chapter 3 / End
Note: Some language.
“G-Goddammit……”
“No way, how……?”
Roughly twenty minutes had passed.
And with their glasses in hand, Moran and Louis were both gasping in agony.
Once the match had resumed, the three participants had attacked their glasses, consuming drink after drink like a surging tide. Now that Louis had been saved the trouble of approaching the other two time and again to fill their glasses, the rate at which the wine now entered them had seen a remarkable jump.
Although Louis was not a strong drinker to begin with, his sheer determination to prevail had allowed him to keep pace with his veteran opponents: at this point, he’d already downed a comparable portion of wine.
However, even mental willpower had its limits. Back when he’d consumed his twentieth glass, the intoxication had hit Louis like a brick, and a wave of dizziness swamped him. From then on, Louis had placed his spectacles on the table, and repeatedly rubbed the inner corners of his eyes in a bid to chase away that sense of vertigo.
Now, Louis was attempting his thirtieth glass of wine since he’d entered the match. In other words, Moran and Albert had already drunk an astonishing 51 glasses.
Even as they moaned like spirits of the dead, both Louis and Moran tried to fill their glasses for the next round; but the hands that held those glasses kept trembling, and wine spilled onto the table many times over.
“——This is truly an excellent wine. With this flavour, I can enjoy myself twice as much.”
On the other hand, Albert was still in perfect shape.
Having long finished preparing his next glass, Albert looked at his two opponents, barely able to hold their own glasses, as if watching them from on high.
Despite having consumed an extraordinary quantity of alcohol, he was still unperturbed, and enjoying the taste of the wine. With unfocused eyes, Louis turned to look at his oldest brother.
“Ha, haha — as expected of you, nii-sama.”
In the face of this overwhelming presence, his own powerlessness seemed almost hilarious in comparison, and he chuckled as if he’d given up.
“This isn’t, the time to be, laughing, Louis……”
Moran thumped his back, in an effort to coax some life back into him. But that gesture was much too weak, and looked as though he was simply trying to soothe a badly drunk man.
Yet perhaps that move had worked, for then, Louis knocked back his entire glass. Following suit, both Moran and Albert drained their glasses too.
“Well then, we’ve finally reached the thirtieth glass.”
Watching the three of them, William announced the tally with dispassion. But at this point, it wasn’t clear if his voice had even reached Louis and Moran.
Having reached a nice round number, it seemed Louis was starting to loosen up. With the last ounces of his strength, he turned his head, and looked at Moran beside him.
“Mr Moran. My apologies, but it looks like, this is my end……”
“Wha…… Oi, hang in there, Louis!”
But his desperate plea went unanswered. The moment Louis uttered those final words, just like Fred, he slumped onto the table.
“L-Louis……”
Half-dazed, Moran mumbled the name of the fallen — and William swiftly appeared by his brother’s side.
“You’ll catch a cold if you fall asleep here, Louis.”
Gently, he tucked the blanket he’d prepared around Louis’s shoulders.
Albert looked on in concern.
“William, is Louis alright?” he asked.
“Yeah, it seems he’s just asleep for now.”
“…………”
The two brothers looked on at their youngest sibling, now keeled over; but even as Moran too fretted over his condition, a sense of admiration and gratitude towards the man had grown within him. Despite being drawn into the match, Louis had pressed on and fought alongside him to get this far. If Moran himself hadn’t been so sozzled, he would even have wanted to give the man a huge round of applause.
However, even those ardent emotions dwindled with time. For Moran was now back to square one — as the only player standing up to Albert — and that lonesome despair weighed heavily on his shoulders.
Here was an opponent so tough, that even someone who’d joined halfway had been no match for him.
That raw power sent a chill down Moran’s back. Desperately trying to hold his vision steady, he glared at Albert.
“……How the hell are you still alive?”
Through his hazy consciousness, Moran barely managed to utter that one phrase. Although it’d come from his own lips, to him, it sounded as if it’d been said by someone else far away.
Albert shifted his gaze from Louis to Moran.
“It’s not so surprising, is it? I just genuinely enjoy drinking wine, Colonel.”
“This is no longer in the realm of ‘enjoyment’, innit……”
Perhaps his inebriation had finally tipped over into delirium: at that moment, the sight of Albert lounging with a glass in hand looked almost like that of the devil.
And finally, that time had come.
“Oh, shit——”
In his final moments, with every last ounce of strength he had within him, Moran uttered that cheap curse.
And in an instant, as if someone had flipped a switch — he blacked out. Like a marionette whose strings had been cut, he collapsed onto the table in front of Albert, and began to snore loudly.
“Looks like…… it’s settled, then.”
Watching the sleeping figures of Fred, Louis, and now Moran, William announced the end of the match.
And thus, on this memorable night, the drinking contest had ended in complete victory for the preternaturally strong Albert.
Tumblr media
“……Mm?”
Around thirty minutes after that, Fred — who’d been the first to drop out — opened his bleary eyes.
Blinking, he slowly sat up, and saw Moran and Louis fast asleep in a row beside him, with blankets wrapped around their shoulders. Why Louis too?, he thought; but seeing that sight before him, at the very least, he somehow understood that the match was over.
Perhaps it was inevitable, but it had ended in a crushing defeat for Moran, Louis and him.
“Good morning, Fred; though the sun hasn’t risen yet.”
Someone called out to him from the side — by reflex, Fred’s gaze snapped toward the voice, and he saw William smiling gently at him, seated in the same spot from earlier. Beside him was Albert.
“……How long has it been?”
Since he already knew how the match had turned out, for now, still a little groggy, Fred enquired as to how long he’d been unconscious.
“It’s been around thirty minutes since the end of the match. So that makes it around two hours since you passed out,” said William. “It’s past midnight now.”
That voice had a somewhat comforting note to it, as if he was worried for Fred, who’d just awakened from the depths of drunkenness.
Then Albert — who was still enjoying his wine — spoke up in concern.
“Still, the colonel has done this time and again without learning his lesson. Even though wine is a luxury to be savoured and enjoyed.”
“Although you’ve beaten him every time, it seems that argument has yet to persuade him otherwise.”
Looking at Albert, who seemed to be functioning perfectly despite everything, William shrugged in amazement.
Fred had no clue as to how exactly how much wine Albert had ended up drinking; but from the wryness of William’s smile, he could at least tell that it was an amount beyond an ordinary person’s imagination.
Once again, Fred reflected on how it’d been a mistake in itself to challenge this monster to a fight.
“Although Moran seems to have given it his all this time around, as I thought: he was no match for you, nii-san.”
As if narrating Fred’s thoughts, William looked back on the outcome of the battle. Then, Albert picked up a bottle that still contained some liquor.
“Won’t you join me for a bit, William? Just to enjoy the wine.”
Despite having consumed a copious amount of alcohol, Albert was still game for more. But William waved a hand in refusal.
“I won’t. Anyway, I already had my fill over dinner.”
“That’s a pity; now that it’s just the two of us, I’d wanted to discuss its flavour at length with you.”
Saying that, Albert tilted his glass, and gently brought it to his lips. That gesture looked almost as if it’d been calculated down to the millimetre — the atmosphere surrounding him truly befitted that of a British aristocrat.
“…………”
William, the pivotal intellect of their organisation, and Albert, who was speaking to him.
Gazing vacantly at the two men, a thought suddenly struck Fred.
——How did this man come to be what he was today?
Albert had been born and raised as a noble — in this stratified society, he was considered part of the upper class.
But despite the position bestowed upon him by his birth, he had not sunk into the degenerate practices of the nobility; instead, his heart ached for the twisted nature of their country, and he wished to overturn it from its very foundations.
And the catalyst for all that, had been the two brothers he’d picked up.
Rather than indulging in their social positions and means, the Moriarty brothers instead refined their intellect and abilities with unyielding force of will, thus turning themselves into the “Lord of Crime” — an existence working in the shadows of Britain’s underworld.
Fred looked at Louis, asleep to his side, and then at William and Albert, who were engaged in conversation.
It was almost as if they’d been destined to meet.
——Could I, too, get closer to them?
Despite not being related by blood, Albert saw William and Louis as his brothers — the bonds between them were strong. In that case, perhaps Fred’s relationship with them could become even closer than what it was now.
Secretly, that thought blossomed in Fred’s heart.
“Well then, it’s getting late, so we should call it a night. Seeing as they’re asleep, what should we do with Louis and the colonel?”
Paying no heed to Fred’s longing gaze, Albert drained the last of his wine, and calmly got to his feet. Remaining seated, William spoke.
“Since they’re so soundly asleep, I’d hate to rouse them; let’s leave them be a while longer.”
“I see. Then I shall remain as well.”
Listening in to their conversation, all of a sudden, Fred remembered the important agreement that’d been made at the start of the match.
Nervously, he asked after Albert.
“Um, since I’ve lost, I suppose the forfeit will fall on me too……?”
Simply owing to the fact that he’d participated in the drinking contest, as one of the defeated parties, Fred had resigned himself to accepting the loser’s penalty.
However, Albert smiled.
“Aah, no need to worry about that. As you know, this match is a personal matter between the colonel and myself; I’m sorry you got caught up in it.”
“N-no, you don’t have to apologise. Even though it was a rather sudden turn of events, it was still my own decision to participate.”
At that unexpected apology, Fred waved both hands weakly. But Albert kept up that elegant smile of his as he continued.
“You don’t have to concern yourself with the forfeit. Well, even if I were fine with him doing it, the colonel would just be a right bother; so I’d be grateful if you could just tidy up the glasses we’ve used tonight.”
“T-Thank you very much.”
Having expected a bigger penalty, Fred was grateful for Albert’s magnanimity. In his heart, he heaved a sigh of relief, and proceeded to clear the glasses.
As he did so, Albert turned to look at Louis, who was still fast asleep.
“And since Louis was also caught up in this, I’ll exempt him as well.”
Then his focus shifted to Moran, who was slumped beside Louis.
“……Instead, I suppose I’ll have to give the colonel a proper punishment.”
“…………”
Although his voice had been calm, a disquieting feeling lingered around those words. Hearing that, even the agile Fred had unwittingly stopped in his tracks.
In place of Fred, whose face had paled, William asked after Albert with a wry smile.
“Nii-san, exactly what kind of punishment will you be giving him?”
Albert’s tone remained calm as always.
“Let’s keep that a secret for now. But no matter what it’ll be, I’m sure all of you can look forward to it.”
Saying that, Albert smiled. It was elegant to a fault.
“…………”
As he took the empty glasses, Fred looked at the sleeping Moran.
He’d set up this contest of his own accord: he had it coming for him. And yet, as Fred thought about what lay in store tomorrow for the man he saw as an older brother, he couldn’t help but feel a little sorry.
Just like this, the night to commemorate the founding of MI6, had drawn to a close.
T/N: …Do I really want to know what Albert’s gonna make him do? (ohoho)
Translator’s notes
Drinking capacities
I thought I’d summarise their relative strengths at drinking :3 From weakest to strongest:
Fred (<20 glasses)
Louis (30)
Moran (52)
Albert (52, and then some)
Though William didn’t participate in the end (aww), I would think he’s on par with Louis, and maybe even a bit stronger too.
The illustration
The illustration shows Moran slumped on a tiny coffee table of sorts; but I’m wondering where Louis and Fred are, since they were described as being asleep on the table beside Moran... Perhaps this is an incongruity between the story and the illustration?

Great Dust Heaps in the Kings Cross area sold to Russia: fact or urban myth?
By John Robinson
On the first floor of the London Canal Museum is a description of Victorian recycling which ends with the words, ‘a huge dust heap was cleared in 1848 to build the (Kings Cross) station’. That seems clear enough but is that actually all there is to the story?
A quick on-line search confirms the existence of several large dust heaps and an intriguing connection with Charles Dickens’ novel Our Mutual Friend and his character Nicodemus Boffin, the Golden Dustman, who became extremely wealthy, inheriting his own dust heap on the death of his master, and thought to be modelled on the real-life dealer in waste, Henry Dodd.
However, by delving a little further, I came across statements, put forward in seemingly reputable contemporary accounts, such as that in P. J. Pink’s mighty History of Clerkenwell (1880), to the effect that the dust heaps were sold to the government of Russia to help the re-building of Moscow after the war of 1812 with Napoleon! Similarly, a syndicated article that appeared in the Fife Herald on 17 May 1837 states, ‘it is a well-known fact that the dust-heap that was wont to grace the top of Gray’s-Inn-Lane is now a competent part of the city of Moscow, to which it was exported as a material for brick-making after the conflagration of that city’.
Tumblr media
Figure 1 – The illustration above is an 1873 watercolour painting by E.H. Dixon of a dust heap located next to Battle Bridge and the London Smallpox Hospital and Weston Place, viewed from Maiden Lane (now York Way). An inscription below the painting inserted by an unknown hand, much later than the date of the painting, refers to the Great Ash Heap being cleared in 1848 to assist in the re-building of Moscow, Russia.
A giant-size dust heap
Coming from an engineering background, I feel the need to gain an approximate understanding of the sort of quantities of materials we are talking about. I have made an attempt to calculate the quantity, based on the Dixon watercolour shown in Figure 1 above and using the people and perimeter fencing shown in the painting as a scale. This suggests that there might be as much as 200,000 cubic metres of rubbish contained within this particular heap. If we assume conservatively that sixty per cent of this was composed of ash and clinker, that would give a quantity of material to be shipped of 120,000 cubic metres, enough presumably to assist with the rebuilding of at least part of Moscow. If we then assume that the volume of cargo that could be accommodated on a canal barge was 80 cubic metres, it would require 1,500 journeys from Kings Cross to Limehouse Basin. Allowing, say, five barge loads per day, it would require the best part of a year to complete the clearance.
The sale to Russia, if true, seems extraordinary and has some relevance to the Museum, as moving the considerable volume of material concerned would, no doubt, have involved loading the material onto barges at the most convenient point, possibly Battlebridge Basin, shipment along the Regent’s Canal to Limehouse Basin, followed by transport by sea-going sailing vessels across the North Sea, to the Baltics, more or less the reverse of the journey made by the ice consignments from Norway to Carlo Gatti’s ice storage warehouse in what is now the London Canal Museum.
The story appears to have aroused the interest of several modern researchers which I found in a wonderful paper compiled by the British Brick Society (2017) titled, ‘London’s Dust Mountains’. Much of what follows has been gleaned from this document.
Circumstantial evidence
What we know:
Much of the content of the dust heaps was ash and clinker from the fires that were needed in every domestic residence. These materials were used to make bricks, with the ash being mixed with clay, and the clinker used to keep the bricks separate and provide additional heat for the firing of the bricks. This material would, therefore, have been useful to anyone undertaking building work, even in a location as far away as Moscow.
Much of Moscow was destroyed by a fire in 1812, started by the Moscow police as part of a scorched earth policy to frustrate Napoleon’s forces sacking of the city. We also know that a 'Commission on Moscow Construction’ was set up in 1813 to coordinate the re-building activity, a plan for which was completed by 1817. The commission was disbanded in 1842. We know that the chief planner for the re-building works was a Scottish architect called William Hastie, confirming a British connection.
Russia had raised a large loan against its sovereign debt in 1822 of £3,500,000. Some of that money could have been used to purchase the dust heap(s).
There was a slump in economic activity in Britain after 1825 leading to a drop in the demand for building materials, which might have encouraged the owner of the dust heap to look for a market elsewhere.
A sea route from London to Moscow was feasible, with ships sailing through the North Sea and into the Baltic to St. Petersburg, entering the river and lake waterways where barges could have taken materials into the heart of Moscow. This route would only have been possible during the summer months when the waterways were ice-free. The alternative route, heading south through the English Channel, through the Bay of Biscay to the Mediterranean, and entering the Black Sea to the sea of Azov, east of Crimea and then overland, via the River Volta to the Moscow River, can most probably be discounted due to the number of transhipments required.
Hard evidence
As mentioned earlier, there were several dust heaps in the Kings Cross area. A huge dust heap, referred to as Smith’s dust heap, was located close to the junction of Gray’s Inn Road and New Road (now Euston Road). This was cleared in 1825/26 which would be consistent with the period of rebuilding in Moscow. Of this, Pink’s History of Clerkenwell states, ‘the corner of Gray’s Inn Road was covered in a mountain of filth and cinders, the accumulation of many years, and which afforded food for hundreds of pigs. The Russians bought the whole of the ash-heap, and shipped it to Moscow, for the purpose of re-building that city after it had been burned by the French’.
Another dust heap, that illustrated in Figure 1, was located close to the site of Kings Cross station and it would seem likely that its clearance would be necessary to make way for the construction of the station. An inscription below the painting inserted much later than the date of the painting, refers to the Great Ash Heap being cleared in 1848 to assist in the re-building of the city of Moscow, Russia. The date of clearance in 1848 would seem to be later than the period of rebuilding of Moscow. However, it is possible that rebuilding work continued following the disbanding of the Commission on Moscow Reconstruction in 1842. The date of clearance would be in line with the date of construction of Kings Cross railway station (1851-52).
But, there is a but…
An article in Slavic Review, ‘The Restoration of Moscow after 1812’ by A J Schmit (1981), makes no mention of the dust heaps being sold to Russia. It does, however, mention Catherine the Great’s ‘masonry city’ and the scarcity of building materials at the end of the 18th century.
Prior to the fire, except for some of the public buildings and churches, most of the buildings in Moscow were of timber construction. Soon after its inauguration in 1813, the Commission on Moscow Construction established brickworks and set about opening quarries. It seems likely that from the fire, it had plenty of ash to call upon, although it would seem likely that clinker was scarce, as the fuel used in domestic fires in Moscow would have been wood rather than coal.
Some buildings were reconstructed using brick construction, but many properties, both public and domestic, were reconstructed using split logs covered in plaster, both inside and out, to provide insulation against the harsh Russian winter and the heat of the summer.
To clear up this mystery, it ought to be possible to check the bills of lading or cargo manifests held by the Lloyds Register of Shipping. Unfortunately, it appears that such records are only available from 1837 onwards.
Conclusions
From the hard evidence provided above, it seems likely that one or more dust heaps did go to Moscow. However, unless further research on this subject is carried out to confirm the fate of the Kings Cross dust heaps, I am left with romantic dreams of the Golden Dustman flogging his dust to the Muscovites. But for those who like conspiracy theories, there is another possibility. The absence of a transparent audit trail appears to be reminiscent of money laundering, for which London appears to be Moscow’s (and the world’s) favourite laundromat.

Sky Theory: The Light and The Darkness
A post about my thoughts on light, darkness, how they react to one another, and (possibly) what it all implies regarding the Eye of Eden. (Spoilers ahead!)
I wrote a post about the civilization we see rise and fall, but today we're going to delve a little deeper into how the story might really be going, from the conflict to the climax to a possible resolution.
To quote the game's story (from the updated Isle of Dawn):
"With the stars united, our light was infinite...and together, we lived in harmony."
It is well established that light is a valuable resource that the spirits relied on, and way back at the beginning, it was also a renewable one: Winged Light fell from the sky continuously, a symbol of innocence and purity as a gift from the Megabird. Because it was infinite, the spirits all flourished, and there was no squabbling over a scarcity.
"As spirits, we soon became many...creating our home here in the clouds."
Here is where the civilization really starts to grow, specifically in the Daylight Prairie stage. The spirits' needs are all met every day of every year. But somewhere down the line, their basic need wasn't enough for them anymore. As they grew in number, so too did they grow in curiosity and want.
"But darkness came and the stars fell...
This sentence here sums up the remainder of our story, although what take place over the course of this sentence is an entire age. Here's how I feel it goes down:
The darkness coming literally refers to darkstone being discovered, and how its potential in advancing the people tempts them away from the comfort of their infinite light. The spirits did not have the light ripped away from them: they chose the darkness over light and turned away willingly, severing themselves from the stars. The Winged Light stop falling and become a precious commodity.
So they toy with this newly discovered darkstone and find that it reacts to light: as light is applied to any kind of darkness, it gives off energy, a rudimentary sort of power generation. There are several pieces of evidence to confirm this:
Darkstone technology only activates when you apply your light to it.
In fact, whenever you activate a darkstone door in the Hidden Forest, you recharge a little bit of cape energy, suggesting excess energy is produced in the reaction.
Darkness plants, when exposed to light, are used up in the process (as they are less dense than darkstone), but they release candle wax in the reaction, a concentrated form of energy.
However, as mentioned above, you need light for the darkness to be of any use to advancements, and now that supply is finite. The spirits must now find alternate sources of light, and the only source available to them at this time is the creatures of light.
The prairie begins transporting butterflies en masse to the forest to be broken down, and their light is channeled through their dark machinations to keep things running. As the butterflies become scarce, they look to mantas instead, and so on.
The civilization continues to grow and with it their demand for light, but the supply continues to dwindle. The scarcity of light is now threatening the people, and an ultimatum must be reached. They need a reliable, renewable source of power, one that can run almost indefinitely, so the King has one built, for the future of his people and their way of life. That's right: the Eye of Eden was never a weapon, but a near-infinite energy source, like a nuclear plant.
The finest engineers gather at the capital city and splice together mass quantities of darkstone into one megalith, only requiring enough light to kickstart a chain reaction. The reaction would cause a feedback loop: the energy emitted by the light-dark reaction would be enough light to perpetuate the reaction for an extended period of time, and any excess energy can be harvested or siphoned off and used to power the grid.
The people have spread far and wide and into different factions, each jealously guarding what little light they have left, knowing the King has intent to seize it. Skirmishes turn into battles turn into a full scale war. The desperation of each front has them all take the glorious darkness and turn it into weapons, and in this production of arms the people are failing to realize the true long-term side effects of utilizing darkness: pollution.
The weapons are produced as close to the front lines as the people could safely manage, hence the heavy pollution in the Golden Wasteland, just outside the capital. The water becomes thick and near impossible to sail through; the light from the light creatures begins to react to the darkness in the air and water, hence the presence of krill and dark crabs twisted by the corrupting dusts. The people try to infiltrate the capital city to seize the light that the King was hoarding. Perhaps some of the elders were even privvied to the King's plan and were working to defend him to save their own factions of people. Perhaps some of the elders even fought each other over differing ideals regarding the new generator.
As a last-ditch effort, the King moves the generator to as close to the sky as he can in a futile attempt to harness the holy light of the stars they had turned away from ages before. He hopes that the reaction will reach high enough to begin drawing in star power, slowly draining the heavens to keep his people alive.
He gathers any light left in the capital city and sends it through the machine, and the reaction kicks off in an instant. The power is greater than the engineers had calculated, and it is too great for them to harness; the wave of energy is massive enough to wipe out most of the denizens in the city within the first few seconds. The displacement of energy creates fierce winds and kicks up poisonous dust clouds, even scooping up entire bricks and boulders and flinging them through the air.
The mighty capital begins to crumble under the weight of this blazing light, and the flinging rocks tear down surrounding cities, picking up more debris as it grinds away at buildings. The dark dusts scatter across the land, settling over what few survivors remain, reacting to their inner Light and encasing them in stone, leaving them with no light left to return to Orbit whence they came.
The people had fallen to the darkness and its powerful properties, using up all their precious light to maintain their mortal existence. Now there is no light left and no way home. All that is left of their existence is husks of darkness, broken bones of old cities, and a radioactive storm with an unholy hybrid of light and darkness at it center that will run its course for thousands of years more.
"...and with their light we faded away."
...But not without one last plea.
"A long time has passed. Now we call to you."
In their last few moments, some groups of people, those who still had faith that they'd rejoin the stars, began to pray. They stated prophecies, chanted incantations into the sky, erected shrines with candles, hoping that their selfless offerings of light would grant them grace. That somehow Megabird would hear their cries and send them a chance at redemption, a chance at attaining Her inner Light once again.
And so the Megabird sent down the Winged Light again, hoping it would be enough to begin healing the land. But She did not quite understand the inner workings of this darkness, for it was beyond Her: this Light was fragile, and couldn't stand up against the darkness that swallowed the sky. She needed a vessel able to carry this Light safely into the heart of darkness where Her people slumbered.
So She learned of the darkness and how it cancelled out Light, and in response, she created the first sky kids.
"Go forth, child. Return our spirits to the stars."
Sky kids are different from spirits in many ways. Firstly, spirits are also creatures of light in that they originate from Orbit. It was their go-to source of energy and sustenance. But that connection between the spirits and all the light they'd ever need was so easily broken by the want that darkness produced, and their sensitivity to this darkness made them fall prey easily when it fell out of control.
By contrast, sky kids were created as instruments of the Megabird, shells carrying Her fragile Light within. They are not beings of pure light, but that's the point: they were designed to withstand darkness, and granting them a corporeal form provides more protection for Her Light from darkness than otherwise.
So the first sky kids go and deliver their inner Light to what fallen spirits they can find. The elders see the coming of the sky kids as Megabird's answer to their pleas, as Her Light is within them, and as the sky kids present their Light to the elders, they are able to reconnect with the stars and send up the spirits freed from darkness. So begins the pilgrimage back to Orbit, spearheaded by an army of children.
The first sky kids free some of the spirits and then head to the capital where light and darkness collide, the point nearest the stars. Megabird's intent was for the collected Winged Light in the hands of the sky kids to be enough pure Light to dispel the storm, but the darkness is too great, and as the Light was torn from them, they had no Light left to keep away the darkness, and they fell at the summit with no way of returning to Her.
So She sent more sky kids, thinking greater numbers would aid Her will. But two things began to happen, things She did not foresee: the sky kids, blank slates with no discernable emotions or features, learned from the spirits they saved: they learned how to wave hello, they learned how to laugh, how to cry, how to cheer, and so on. They even began taking on some of the fashions from the spirits! They presented individuality, suggesting that Megabird's Light was more than just pure Light: it was also a soul in its own right, much like the spirits that came before.
The second thing that happened was at the summit of the Eye of Eden, as it came to be called: when the sky kids realized their Winged Light wouldn't survive the Storm, they passed it on to fallen sky kids instead so that they may ascend back to Orbit and rejoin Megabird, at the cost of their own ascension. This soul of Light each sky kid carried not only established a personality, but also compassion, as Her Light was always meant to do. Sky kids were drawn to one another, and they started to work like teams and help one another out. They gave each other offerings of light as symbols of friendship and acceptance, not unlike the spirits' desperate offerings of light and candles to Megabird.
The Eye of Eden is the purest, most powerful light colliding with the purest, most potent darkness, which makes it an ideal euphemism for death: suffering and then release. It is the door to Orbit, but their possessions - their Winged Light - will be left behind. They only carry their deeds in their darkest time, which they are rewarded for after the fact.
When they came to Orbit at last, Megabird lauded them for their sacrifice and kindness, and invited them to remain with Her. But many of them expressed distress and dismay for all the sky kids still down in the clouds that needed help, and all the friends that they would miss. So She sent them back with two boons: additional Light granted by the spirits they helped ascend, and the knowledge needed to guide other sky kids back to Her.
Even if not everyone would rejoin Her in the Light, it brought Her comfort that Her Light was spread across an aching kingdom, sharing hope and peace to those who couldn't be near to Her.
