Canon EF 100-400 L IS USM

My greatest difficulty with birding is light. In the late afternoon, I had to take the shutter speed down to 1/200s for some of these shots. Not ideal at 400mm or such a fast, nervous bird.

Stabilisation and shooting raw files help, but the ideal solution would be a larger aperture lens. Unfortunately, the cheapest options are priced similarly to small cars, so like most people, my birding has a curfew.

"Autumn's Whisper," Hazelnut tree tunnel in the Autumn, Oregon

Autumn brings fall colors to a Hazelnut tree tunnel in Oregon

The transition to Autumn is always an amazing time of year. The way the leaves change colors before they begin to fall off the trees is always magical to witness. It's can hard to find a "tree tunnel" in the autumn, but when you do find one it's always amazing to see. It's as if Autumn is looking back at you, whispering "isn't this beautiful?" The magic colors of Autumn is such a short window, but I've always thought that was what makes it so much more special. It's that short whispering beauty, a beautiful burst of color. One of my favorite things about photography is its ability to freeze those short moments like this, preserved forever to look at whenever you need a smile. I used a super telephoto for this image to create strong depth of field. It compresses the image from front to back, creating a look and a feeling of being right there, surrounded by Autumn's whisper.

This is part of the Yorkshire Heritage Way, in particular, the Flamborough section.

My wife and I decided to head over there yesterday afternoon, having not walked it before and hankering after blowing off the Cobwebs.

The coastline is one of Chalk cliffs, some sections being 100ft+ in height.

It's an exposed and often wild part of the Yorkshire Coastline, with secluded bays, only accessible from the sea by boat, or a climb down with some specialist equipment if you're that way inclined.

The area here is designated a Nature Reserve and is home to several mammalian species and sea birds. We missed the Puffins nesting by a month or so, as they nest and raise a single 'Puffling', here each year between May and July.

I said I'd come back next year for the Puffin season and hire a 200-400mm lens for one of my cameras and set my stall out to grab some close ups of them.

Today I was running with the Sony a6300, a 90mm f/2.8 Macro lens and i also took a super compact 7Artisans 25mm f/1.8 fully manual lens, due to it being so small i could pop it in a pocket.

The Macro lens gave me 135mm full frame equivalent, due to the crop factor of the camera. I could have really done with a 300mm equivalent focal length as a minimum to be fair, but it was the longest lens I have to hand. It just wasn't even near good enough to grab shots of the birds nesting in the cliffs.

It did however allow me to grab the odd macro shot, such as this abstract one i shot here.

It's a good focal length for the odd portrait as well, although it gives a lot of compression. The lens was a Tamron 90mm 1:1 macro designed for EF (Canon) fit bodies. So i used a Sigma MC11 lens converter. I'll be honest, it was hit and miss with the focus at times, as it would simply stop communicating with the camera and I'd have to take out the camera battery and re-insert and switch back on a few times over the course of the day. It was workable though and at times i found myself switching to manual focus and using peak focusing and the focus zoom on the Sony (which is brilliant BTW and I've yet to see another system match the Sonys, although Fujifilm are close on the X series bodies).

I have to admit that I've not used the little Sony for several months, as I've fallen for Fujifilm and so have been shooting them 90% of the time. It is a great little camera though and way more powerful than it's compact size suggests. Aimee took the shots of me on her Google Pixel 6 phone.

The wind started to pick up a fair bit a couple of miles along the coast and the sun was dipping towards the Horizon, so we decided to turn about and head back the way we came, stopping for a picnic on a picnic bench/table set up (of which several are dotted about here and there) when we were almost back to the Flamborough Head Lighthouse car park.

We decided we would hang on a bit more into blue hour, so we headed down to the nature hide there and saw some seals on the beach, grabbed a few shots then headed back to the car for me to set up my camera and tripod for some shots of the Lighthouse when it was switched on.

We had a great day and I'd recommend it.

As always, the Sony performed really well and these lighthouse shots were taken using the 7Artisans 25mm lens. It's a great little lens that and for the money (£80 ish) it's an absolute steal. It's completely manual, but I love that about it, and it can produce super sharp images. I highly recommend it.

I am sometimes asked about what bag and kit I'm carrying if shown in images.

If you're interested, this rucksack here is a Swedish Army LK35 pack. It's been modified by the addition of the Swedish Army Webbing pouches being sewn onto the sides. It has a steel tubular frame, which allows the load to be centralised and I have a Viper waist belt attached as well, another modification. I've added a couple of small molle pouches to that belt also, so i can carry spare batteries, a mic for video, compass, multitool, etc etc.

This is a great pack for everything outdoors. I wouldn't use it in town, it's too military looking, but anywhere in the outdoors, it's brilliant.

They're hard to comeby now, and you could be paying £150+ for a good one and I've seen them going for in excess of £300!

This one was made in 1988! By a company called Haglofs, a Swedish outdoor company who had the contract to make the packs for the Swedish Army between around 1980 and 2000. Comfiest and most practical pack I've ever used.

Mind-blowing sunrise, surf photography and silhouette sessions between Tamarama and Bronte Beach!

I was in the zone, zen-focused and the only way that I can describe the shoot is split second captures, moments in time and an approach that I taught myself in the music industry whilst shooting freelance for triple j/myself at festivals/gigs around Australia and honed over the past 10-15 years in Australia, the USA and around the world…

Be in the moment and by all means grab a diverse array of images that people expect/that the client wants, but don’t just shoot what’s in front of you… try for something new, shoot from a different perspective and take in the whole scene, then fully your gut instinct and position yourself in the best vantage points to anticipate and time where you think that the best, most unexpected and most spectacular photos will be… from your perspective. That’s how you inspire your own creative flow, keep your passion for photography and that’s how stand out as one of the best, with a style of your very own.

I am my own harshest critic and while I am keenly aware that I still have SO much to learn about the technical/editing side of things, I can see how far that I’ve come in this past 6 months alone and I am proud of me. In my humble opinion, we should own what we’ve achieved for ourselves, our growth and what we’re good at, as it helps generate a sense of self-worth and purpose, which keeps our energy levels high and the positivity flowing, which in turn generates a desire for forward momentum through further growth.

I felt so energised after this beautiful morning on Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk that my synapses were firing on all cylinders for literally the rest of Saturday, as I hit the ocean for a bodysurfing sesh post-shoot, Bondi Farmers Market with a friend for a fresh baguette and sunflowers for my apartment and a delicious bowl of pho, Bondi Icebergs Club for a Saturday arvo beers with a close mate from my Dubai days and even into the next day when I went at it again! It’s amazing how it can make you feel when you feed your creativity and flow… so in love with life!

Split second captures. Moments in time. So focused and so zen. One of the sickest f*ckin’ sunrise surf photography sessions of my life!

Sunrise Beach Volleyball – Tamarama Beach by @hotndelicious

What magical start to Wednesday!

.

I hit the backstreets of South Bondi and Tamarama on my sunrise Bondi to Bronte Coastal Walk this morning to get the glutes and quads firing, which makes my butt feel like a ripe peach at Harris Farms on market day and kickstarts the endorphins firing through my system by the time I start shooting out the back of Tamarama Beach, as the sun rises over the ocean and I walk down the hill from above to Bronte Beach.

.

I had an energising week of little wins last week, with several prospective biz opportunities that I’m hoping will come into a fruition over the coming weeks and months, PLUS I’m launching a new business venture within the next 7 days – you know that I’m into it and firing on all cylinders when I carve out time on a Saturday afternoon to register various domain names, the business name and lock-in all of the brand new social media handles across all platforms. You’re going to love this – it’s going to make you crack up with laughter and give you squeals of joy when you see it. Watch this space!

.

That combined with 7 x sunrise walks and 7 x lunchtime bodysurfing sessions in the 7 days from Monday to Sunday last week, had me flowing with energy and joy, so I was well ready for a 3.5 sunrise photography walk this morning after being stuck inside of the wet & cold, blustery winter weather of Bondi Beach the past 2 days (yes, it happens sometimes in winter) 😁✨

.

I met Maria at Bronte Beach just after sunrise and we had lovely little chats, whilst capturing silhouettes of waves against the Mackenzies Point and North Bondi backdrop, bumped in Uge AKA Aquabumps at Bronte Beach and a bunch of different peeps back on my home turf on the promenade at Bondi Beach, including one of my Instagram followers Kirsten, whom I’d never met in person before. She stopped me to say hi and tell me how much she loves my pics. Thank you! (Do it, don’t be shy, peeps – it makes my day every single time). I love our little Bondi Beach community!

.

As we speak, I’m editing this morning’s images with a smile on my face and you’ll note that I’ve given the captures some rustic yellows and deep, sky blues in Lightroom, as to me they fit the vibe this morning – coming out into the light of a beautiful sunrise after a stormy few days and the sea is still quite wild. Can you guess which shots are my faves?

I am looking forward to my lunchtime bodysurfing sesh and excited for the beautiful weather forecasted for the week ahead!
