PROJECT PROPOSAL: Spotlight

Project Description: 

My final project will be about dance/performance on stage. My project aims to show the beauty and excitement of performing. I’m currently part of two dance groups and the journey together to practice and learn has been very fun but also very tiring and time heavy. There is alot of hard work that goes into the final performance and I want to showcase the end result. My subjects would be the various dance/performance groups that perform on campus. Some technical/conceptual issues that may occur would be finding the right angle to take the photo since having good seating can be hard to find and also finding the correct setting to prevent my images from being to dark will be somewhat difficult.

Outcomes: 

7-9 photos on standard paper. 

Editing will be made through Photoshop

No special equipment needed

I have a good amount of cameras but my favorite that I own is my Canon EOS Rebel sl1. I got that one from a friend in high school (2017) and it has always been my goto camera.

This is my list of cameras I own and my observations of each one. It could be different for others, my favorite could be someone's least favorite. Just gotta find what fits for you.

Canon EOS Rebel sl1 — Amazing for concert photography, really good in low light settings. It's also touch screen so that's nice. I think this is a really good first camera. It's simple and easy to learn from. A lot of times I'm happy with the product that I don't do much editing after (unless I'm going for something specific). Highly recommend this one.

Canon ESO Rebel T6 — More bulky than the sl1, it's the "upgrade" but I still prefer the sl1. Haven't used it much, it's still "new" to me (bought it off a friend). It's not bad, it's gives off good quality.

Canon G7X Zoom Lens — This one is a little hand camera, not a detachable lens. It's good for videos like for vlogs or other small stuff, not like video production. The screen flips up so it's just perfect for videoing yourself. Horrible pictures though at least when it comes to concerts. It's probably fine for pictures with friends and shit.

Sony RX100 // ZEISS Vario-Sonnar — This also a little hand camera zoom lens. This one was my favorite to bring to concerts when I couldn't have professional/detachable lens cameras. For being a little guy it took some really good photos. I asked in a photography group what the best hand camera was and they said this one. Which is heartbreaking guy it's broken 😭 the zoom lens started not wanting to open. So I'm on the look out for another one or something similar cause it really was a good one.

I believe these are shot with that camera

Sony Alpha 6000 // APS-C 24.3 megapixel — This is is poor in low lighting so concert photography isn't the best, but for portraits and anything outdoors, absolutely beautiful. Its shutter speed is so fast. With this one I love having my models spin or do any type of motion. I could only assume it's great for sports too.

Nikon D7000 — This is my big boy, the bulky one. Mainly just bring it for show cause the others are so small and this one looks the most professional... but I hate it 🫣 I don't know if it's got something wrong with it but it just doesn't bring a sharp imagine. I don't ever use it. I try every once in a while with different things but it just is a poor quality camera. Again, it could just be something messed up with it and all it needs is fixed. Cause I use to use it a lot when working with a photographer it was his camera and I got it as a gift) I don't remember it ever being an issue.

So I'm really not sure on that one…

1."Everyday Illuminations: Exploring the Intimacy of Huntington"

2. “Everyday Illuminations: Exploring the Intimacy of Huntington" is my final project for our online Summer photography course that I will present via Tumblr, inspired by Alessio Trerotoli's series "Rome in the Dark." My project will aim to capture the intimate moments and hidden narratives within everyday life in Huntington, NY, using my Canon EOS REBEL SL1 DSLR Camera. The theme of the project revolves around using natural and artificial lighting to illuminate the ordinary as well as to create a sense of intimacy. I will explore how different lighting techniques can enhance the mood, atmosphere, and storytelling in my images, influenced by Trerotoli's deliberate use of lighting in his work. Throughout the project, I will photograph various subjects in Huntington, such as streets, parks, cafes, and local landmarks. By paying attention to the interplay of light and shadow, I will capture the beauty and complexity of everyday scenes, highlighting the significance of seemingly mundane moments. I will specifically seek out unique perspectives to pay attention to details that normally go unnoticed. I will experiment with lighting techniques, including natural light, artificial light sources, and creative use of shadows. I will learn to compose my images to convey a meaningful message, whether through narrative storytelling or thematic exploration, trying to create a sense of intrigue and emotional depth in my photographs. My main goal is to highlight the magic in the typically unremarkable, and uncover the immense beauty in things me and most people in my neighborhood pass by everyday.

3. The practical outcomes of the project include:

- Eight edited photographs showcasing the intimacy of everyday life in Huntington, NY.

- Focus on streets, parks, stores, and historical landmarks.

- Through Tumblr, I will present my final photo essay to our class.

4. METHODS AND MATERIALS: - Canon EOS REBEL SL1 using an 18-55 mm Image Stabilizer Macro 0.25m/0.8 ft Lens.

- I will also use a tripod for stability when shooting in low light or long exposure situations.

- There will be natural lighting, including golden hour and twilight, to create warm and evocative scenes, as well as, artificial lighting sources, such as streetlights, lamps, or candlelight, to add atmosphere and drama.

- Lastly, I will use editing software including: Adobe Lightroom, Photoshop and Camera Raw to edit and enhance the images, mood, colors, and tonal range of the images while conveying my message.

5. The first of my references include the works of Fan Ho, specifically “Hong Kong Yesterday”. He is known for his advanced use of light and shadow to capture intimate moments in street photography, specifically Hong Kong during the 1950s and 1960s.

My second reference is the series "Humans of New York" by Brandon Stanton, which explores the everyday lives and stories of individuals in New York City.
