“Don’t worry, this dog lives,” Mark Wahlberg assured us in the previews for Arthur the King which started showing up on social media a few weeks before the film’s premiere. While technically this could be considered a spoiler, I actually respect the filmmakers of the film for coming straight out and letting us know this plot point up front. There is nothing more horrible than a film trying to wring some pathos from their audience by killing off a beautiful dog (or cat, or bird, or any other animal, for that matter).
This film, based on a true story of adventurers competing in a dangerous endurance race in the Dominican Republic when they run across a stray dog, and the mutt bonds with them, particularly the leader – would seem to be just the type of film which would put the dog in many hazardous situations, and you never know how he will survive those. Therefore, the reassurance was appreciated. I could go into Arthur the King with an easy mind, knowing that I would not have to deal with that sort of fate.
Well, maybe I would have to deal with it a bit, because once I watched the film, I found that much of the last 15-20 minutes of the movie do as much as they could to tease the idea of the dog actually being very close to dying, leading me to wonder if Wahlberg had been lying to everyone in the ads. Luckily, he wasn’t lying. (Again, sorry if that feels like a spoiler, but they have been literally advertising the film on the idea the dog will survive, so if anyone let on the spoiler, it is the film studio themselves.)
But discussing the last 20 minutes of the film is getting a little ahead of ourselves. Was the whole of Arthur the King in its own way regal, or was it simply a pretender to the throne?
The story revolves around a daunting 435-mile endurance race through the wilds of the Dominican Republic. Teams have several days to traverse the length of the course. They are allowed – in fact, it is necessary – to use multiple modes of transportation. Most of the time they are simply running, or hiking, or climbing, but they must also use things like kayaks, boats, swimming, bicycles, ziplines, etc., to reach the finish line. The first team to reach the finish line wins… something… I’m not 100% sure what. Undoubtedly, it’s a bit of money and bragging rights.
The team we are following is led by Wahlberg’s Michael Light (a fictionalized version of real-life Swedish adventurer Mikael Lindnord, whose book is the basis for the film), a well-respected guy on the circuit who always comes just short of winning. He is now a father and being pressured to slow down and live a normal life and take a job in his stepfather’s business. However, Michael is determined to take one more shot at winning – even to the point where he spends his own money, which he really can’t afford, to get his group into competition.
The team is made up of kind of underwritten types – there is the social media obsessed one (Simu Lui), the one who is racing to please her dying father, who was a legend in the circuit (Nathalie Emmanuel) and the aging former star with a bad knee (Ali Suliman).
For the record, the Arthur in the title is the name the racers gave to a stray dog who crossed their paths, apparently because the leader Michael respected the canine’s fearlessness and regal bearing, which reminded him of the medieval king. Michael gave the dog a couple of meatballs early on in the race, and hundreds of miles later the mutt showed up again, apparently having followed the group the whole way.
Oddly, despite the fact that the movie is named after the pooch, he really doesn’t connect with the racing team until about halfway through the film. In earlier sections of the film, they periodically show short scenes of the dog enduring the hard life of a stray in a small village in the tropics, undoubtedly because otherwise the audience will be wondering when the dog will be entering the story in a substantial way.
While many of the sections of the race are interesting and rather exciting, the film really doesn’t hit its stride until Arthur joins up, becoming the group’s mascot, and eventually the main focus of Michael’s trip. In fact, honestly, the way the obsessive racer suddenly falls in love with this dirty but sweet dog is rushed a bit in the second half of the film. I’d kind of have liked to have the dog along from the very beginning, although of course that is not how it happened in real life.
Arthur the King is a bit cheesy and sort of predictable, and yet it is a sweet feel-good drama which almost makes it to the finish line. As noted before, the late section where the dog is in eminent danger is overly manipulative and melodramatic, but it doesn’t completely knock the film off of its footing. No one could call this a terrific movie, but it is an enjoyable one if you’re willing to turn your brain off for a bit and just go with it.
The dog is cute as hell though, and Arthur the King is worth seeing for that reason alone.

Avian flu killed at least 25 wild bird species in 55 Minnesota counties - Duluth News Tribune
The spring outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza that hit wild birds hard across the U.S. killed at least 275 birds from 25 different species in 55 counties across Minnesota.
That’s the update this week from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources where wildlife health experts say the outbreak appears to be nearly over.
Bird experts had already given the all-clear for people to resume feeding songbirds now that the disease appears to have calmed down as the spring migration ends. Bird experts had said songbirds were always at low risk to catch the disease.
Across the nation, thousands of wild birds have died from the disease that also struck commercial and backyard poultry farms, forcing millions of birds to be destroyed. The disease also was confirmed in foxes in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Minnesota DNR officials said nearly 700 birds have been tested in the state so far, but that they almost certainly haven’t found all cases of the disease within the state. It may never be clear how hard the disease hit vulnerable populations of birds or species of birds harder to find.
“We have no solid number of wild birds affected, or a way to scale this outbreak to a population level at this point,’’ Michelle Carstensen, the Minnesota DNR’s wildlife health program leader, told the News Tribune.
In Minnesota, the disease hit waterfowl and the raptors that eat waterfowl especially hard. Species impacted include crows, pelicans, bald eagles, barred owls, broad-winged hawks, Canada geese, common goldeneyes, loon, ravens, Cooper’s hawks, dark-eyed juncos, great-horned owls, hooded mergansers, mallards, northern harriers, red-shouldered hawks, red-tailed hawks, Ross’s geese, rough-legged hawks, snow geese, trumpeter swans, turkey vultures, white-fronted geese and wood ducks.
The DNR said the disease killed birds in 55 counties, including St. Louis, Carlton, Itasca, Cass, Aitkin, Pine, Anoka, Blue Earth, Brown, Carver, Chippewa, Chisago, Clay, Crow Wing, Dakota, Faribault, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Grant, Hennepin, Houston, Hubbard, Isanti, Kandiyohi, Le Sueur, Lyon, Mahnomen, Martin, McLeod, Mille Lacs, Morrison, Murray, Nicollet, Nobles, Olmsted, Polk, Pope, Ramsey, Red Lake, Rice, Roseau, Scott, Sherburne, Stearns, Steele, Stevens, Todd, Wabasha, Wadena, Washington, Watonwan, Wilkin, Winona and Wright.
Only one human case of bird flu has been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S. during this outbreak. The case affected a commercial poultry industry worker in Colorado who recovered fully.

Locke & Key Release Date, Cast and Details for Netflix Series
https://ift.tt/361bGc5
After years of development, the TV series adaptation of IDW horror comic Locke & Key is headed for Netflix in 2020.

twitter
tumblr
The Locke & Key TV series project has had a rough time, but its troubles finally appear to be over, thanks to Netflix.
Back in July 2016, THR revealed that Hulu had given the show adaptation of writer Joe Hill's IDW horror comic book series a pilot order, with Carlton Cuse (Lost) set to serve as showrunner. Auspiciously, Andy Muschietti (It, Mama) was on tap to direct the pilot after Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson had to withdraw.
Unfortunately, after all that, Hulu passed on the project! However, Netflix eventually came in for the rescue... even if said rescue involved scrapping Hulu's pilot. Regardless, the Locke & Key TV series is finally happening, officially greenlit as a 10-episode series for Netflix!
In the latest news on Netflix's Locke & Key, the reality of this long-beleaguered adaptation is finally becoming palpable, with the official reveal of a premiere date for the series, accompanied by the very first posters!
Locke & Key Release Date
Locke & Key is set to premiere on Netflix on Friday, February 7, 2020.
Locke & Key Poster
The premiere date reveal also came with the first bit of official ephemera in the form of a poster, which Netflix has also released in motion form, as seen below.

Locke & Key TV Series Cast
Tumblr media
Darby Stanchfield (Scandal, NCIS, Castle) will star in Netflix’s Locke & Key, reported Deadline. She will play Nina Locke, the widowed single mother of the three Locke children, who moves the family into their ancestral home, the Keyhouse, in Maine. However, the property has centuries of connections to the supernatural – and the circumstances of her husband’s death – and acts as a dimensional portal through which malevolent demons wish to cross. Nina was played by Frances O'Connor in Hulu's pilot, and by Miranda Otto in the nixed 2011 version.
She is joined by a young cast who will portray her onscreen children, the Locke siblings, on the streaming giant’s reworked version of the Locke & Key TV series.
Connor Jessup (American Crime, Falling Skies) will play Tyler Locke, who, as a teenager, is the oldest of the siblings.
Emilia Jones (Wolf Hall, Utopia) will play Kinsey Locke.
Jackson Robert Scott (It – as Georgie Denbrough) will play the youngest of the trio, Bode Locke. Interestingly, Scott was cast as Bode in the nixed Hulu iteration and, for now, stands as the only cast member retained by Netflix.
Also onboard are the following:
Sherri Saum (The Fosters), Felix Mallard (Neighbours) Petrice Jones (iBoy, Stan Lee’s Lucky Man), Griffin Gluck (American Vandal, Red Band Society) and Laysla De Oliveira (The Gifted, iZombie).
Locke & Key TV Series Details
While the streaming giant rescued the wayward project, the move involved crucial caveats: Netflix’s series order came with the confirmation that Locke & Key will go back to the drawing board, re-casting while redeveloping the scripts, essentially scrapping the Hulu pilot, which was directed by It helmer Andy Muschietti (who’s too busy with the sequel to handle the mulligan).
Interestingly, Netflix is opting to keep the Hulu iteration’s creative fulcrum, Joe Hill, who remains onboard as creator/writer/executive producer. The same goes for showrunner Carlton Cuse, known from Lost, The Strain, Bates Motel and Amazon’s upcoming Jack Ryan series. Cuse is now joined in that capacity by Meredith Averill, who’s worked on Jane the Virgin, Star-Crossed and The Good Wife, along with Netflix’s upcoming TV series horror reboot The Haunting of Hill House.
In 2016, IDW Entertainment released news that Locke & Key writer Joe Hill (he wrote the story for the comics, with art by Gabriel Rodriguez) was on board to write the pilot and executive produce the TV show adaptation as a straight-to-series project. It's unclear how Hulu and Cuse's involvement might change that plan, but Hill had previously said in a statement:
I love this story. The seven years I spent working on Locke & Key was the happiest creative experience of my life, and there still isn’t a day when I don’t think about those characters and miss visiting with them. The six books of the series are very like six seasons of a cable TV series, and so it feels only natural to bring that world to the little screen and to see if we can’t scare the pants off viewers everywhere.
Locke & Key begins with the story of three siblings returning to their family's ancestral home following the brutal and mysterious murder of their father. As they explore the house and its surroundings, it becomes clear that there are wonderful and terrible things lurking on the grounds. It is a comic book horror classic.
Hulu's scrapped Locke & Key pilot consisted of the following cast:
Frances O’Connor (The Conjuring 2, A.I. Artificial Intelligence) as Nina Locke. Sam Robards (Twisted, Gossip Girl) as Rendell Locke. Jack Mulhern (Walking to the Waterline) as Tyler Locke. Megan Charpentier (It, Mama) as Kinsey Locke. Jackson Robert Scott (It, Fear the Walking Dead) as Bode Locke. Nate Corddry (The Circle, The Marvelous Ms. Maisel) as Duncan Locke. Owen Teague (It, Bloodline) as Sam Lesser. Lastly, Danny Glover was to play a cameo role as teacher Joe Ridgeway. Of course, there's another failed Locke & Key TV endeavor that predate Hulu's version.
Long before that, a TV show adaptation made it all the way to the pilot stage in 2011, but never garnered a pick-up. The TV adaptation had Josh Friedman as a showrunner (The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Avatar 2) and an all-star cast that included Miranda Otto, Sarah Bolger, and Ksenia Solo. Check out the trailer...
youtube
Sadly, this version of Locke & Key never made it past a pilot, but the pop culture world seems better poised to embrace an onscreen version of this horror comic now. Not only are there way more comic book adaptations on TV and film, but Joe Hill has attained a better industry foothold, especially with the recent film adaptaion of Horns. Hopefully, the Netflix adaptation is good and garners enough of an audience to ensure its continuation. Universe, you owe us this.
