You know, I am so constantly outwitting the opposition, I tend to forget the delights and satisfaction of the arts, the gentle art of fisticuffs.

Carnival of Monsters is a lot of things but one thing it is entirely incorrect about is the Doctor not understanding Polari

There’s a line in Carnival of Monsters in which the Doctor claims to have persuaded the High Council of Time Lords to ban miniscopes and this is one of my favourite things in all of Doctor Who because it brings to mind the image of a student-aged first Doctor standing outside the Academy handing out fliers and trying to get people to sign his petition.

Time Ram - Drashigs or Dishrags?
Roll up, roll up! Come and see the funny little actors rammed into a story from the Pertwee era! Thrill as Vicki attempts a triangle! Shriek at the extraterrestial bureaucrats and their malevolent schemes! Gasp as Ian and Barbara face down a man in a sack with prongs (or possibly still just glove puppets)! Look at this turtle! That's prehistoric, that is. On after The Pyramid Game.

Dr Who: Carnival of Monsters
I rewatched this on 17 February 2023, the first time in a while. It’s another serial that I’ve seen a lot of times in the past, and read the novelisation back in the day. In a fab bit of synchronicity, the fourth episode was first shown on the BBC fifty years ago to the day!
We are immediately thrust into an alien world of greys and grease paint. It’s an insular world just opening up to aliens, a move that’s contested. There are those among the indigenous population terrified that the “functionaries” will rise up and take over. The contrast with the visiting alien entertainers is well done on several levels, and I’m picking up a lot more on the politics this time around.
However, our heroes (the Doctor and Jo) arrive in the bowels of a 1920s ship heading towards India… or is it? Of course it isn’t. The mystery unfolds rather nicely, and there are monsters aplenty, as you’d hope from the serial title!
Rather splendidly, there are actually other women in the cast. Less splendidly, they are a little vacuous.
Fun things: it’s the first time that the Doctor mentions Metebelis 3 and his desire to visit it. The Doctor reveals himself to have been an effective campaigner against the use of miniscopes as an affront against sentient life. We also learn that the sonic screwdriver can’t work on non-electronic locks. Well, this version of the sonic screwdriver at any rate. Polari is an underground language originally made by carnival and theatre folk, which gay people took up. One of the monster collections in the miniscope neatly reminds the audience about the Daleks and their Ogron servants. And the supporting cast boasts two actors of particular interest to Dr Who: Michael Wisher and Ian Marter.

Look.
I LOVED Carnival of Monsters.
It was an amazing romp of a Dr Who episode.
(It also marks the ONLY appearance of a Cyberman during the Third Doctor’s era. In a cameo. Apparently they didn’t show up because Jon Pertwee or Terrance Dicks (possibly both?) didn’t like them very much as far as enemies go)
One of my favourites.
But the Drashigs are FUCKING NIGHTMARE FUEL!!!!!
They’re way more terrifying than they have any right to be! Yes they’re meant to be scary but they’re FAR too scary.
Like whoever designed and operated them did their job a little too well.
Creepy fucking shit.
