i feel like we as a fandom don’t talk enough about the fact that steve’s redemption arc had nothing to do with the upside down
like, yes, he grows pretty steadily as a person over the course of the entire show, and yes, his relationships with dustin and robin specifically are a big part of that growth and both those relationships are rooted in UD shenanigans, but that isn’t where it started. and it wasn’t nancy either
he has that whole speech in s4 about how he needs to get conked on the head to start moving in the right direction, and maybe that’s true to an extent, but the wallop he got wasn’t “monsters are real” and it wasn’t “ough pretty girl,” it was him, completely on his own, wanting to change
because the death of king steve is 100% a choice steve makes, voluntarily, before he knows about the UD, totally separate from his desire to be with nancy. he realizes fully independently that he isn’t proud of being a bully and he wants to do better. that’s entirely steve deciding that for himself
he goes to jonathan first. he doesn’t apologize to nancy first, he’s not trying to get back on her good side, he’s not trying to get ahead of any story and convince her to take him back. he still even actively thinks jonathan is sleeping with her, at this point
he has every logical reason to believe that jonathan 1) violated him sexually (and publicly!) and 2) fucked his girlfriend. he has every reason to think his girlfriend cheated on him! his anger with jonathan (and nancy!) is, from steve’s pov, given the information he has, completely justified, and steve still, with no reason at all to like jonathan or forgive nancy, with no reason to go against tommy and carol (given that they’re his lifelong best friends and have seemingly just been proven right about hating his gf), decides completely independently that the things he said to jonathan were out of line
he has literally no reason to be kind to this dude, and he’s working against a pretty engrained habit of teenage cruelty, and he still makes that call all by himself. for no other reason than that his conscience demands it. that’s an astonishingly humble and selfless act from any 17 year old, but especially one who was raised on money and popularity and has no real reason to go against that upbringing (and has never done so before!). the moral fortitude that takes is incredible
i couldn’t have made that apology at 17, i was way too caught up in myself and far too scared of feeling any kind of shame or social consequences. i would have focused on the things that fueled my anger, that made me feel justified. i wouldn’t have been capable of seriously reflecting on the ways i might be in the wrong. but steve does. he makes that call completely unprompted. he chooses to not only acknowledge that what he said to jonathan was fucked up, as was what he and tommy did to nancy (even when, again, his anger, if not his actions, was fully justified), but to apologize to jonathan first (risking him convincing nancy that steve isn’t worth forgiving, and he still thinks this is the guy fucking his girlfriend, and this is the guy who never apologized for the creepshots!) and to abandon his social safety net to do it (horrifically difficult to do at that age)
and then the poor guy gets attacked by a monster and the first thing he does is save the asshole who took naked pics of him and basically risked showing the whole school, and the girlfriend he has every reason to believe is fucking him.
steve harrington is a fucking saint and we don’t talk about it enough.

The overall lack of a criminal history and Mallory’s age at the time the crime was committed contributed to that decision I’m sure.” Dateline NBC airs Fridays at 9pm. But the state made the decision to not pursue the death penalty. Harris’ stepfather Charles Cassity said: “Our personal preference would have been that they both would be executed. Mallory and Cervantez were both found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life in prison. Mallory and some others, would it be smart, would it be wise to bring along someone who could have been blown away by a strong breeze?” Gordon was referring to Cervantez’s slight physical stature. Her defense attorney Steve Gordon argued: “If the intent to murder Ashlea was developed by Mr. Prosecutors claim Cervantez was the mastermind of the murder/robbery plot and that she manipulated Mallory although Cervantez testified that she was raped when she did not do what Mallory wanted. The young couple had robbed an American Eagle store in a nearby mall three months prior, in August, during back-to-school sales. According to prosecutors, Mallory and Cervantez beat and bound Harris to steal the keys to the American Eagle store and planned to rob the store. The two people convicted of her murder were Harris’ former co-workers: Clarence David Mallory, 19, and his live-in girlfriend Carter Carol Cervantez, 25. Anonymous asked:
Hey! It’s me again, your GOT secret Santa. Could you please elaborate on what aspects of the Tywin/Joanna ship you like? They’re not a ship I’ve ever written for, so I’d appreciate it if you could tell me why you like them so much. Anyways, I hope things are going great with you and that you’re getting ready for the holidays 😊
I love Tywin and Joanna because this ship is ASOIAF in its simplest form, stripped down to the bare bones, the meaning made plain.
In my opinion, ASOIAF is different from a lot of other fantasy I’ve read because it doesn’t focus on a magic system, and it doesn’t focus on a great war (we still barely even know anything about the Others).
ASOIAF is different; ASOIAF is about what makes us human. (Even GRRM’s term for the enemy, Other, comes back to this central theme of our humanity, because it suggests that humanity is fighting against something other than human beings, something un-human, something inhumane.)
Tywin is one of the most un-human human beings in the entire series. He’s also the villain that we get the most information about, and he still looms large over the text even in death. (Even in the brief glimpses of TWOW that he’s shared, GRRM keeps bringing him up.) GRRM has shown us all of these monstrous things about Tywin, but in doing so, he’s made the tiny glowing embers of Tywin’s humanity burn like the beacons of Minas Tirith.
It’s our joy and our love and our laughter that make us human. It’s our sorrow and our pain. But more than all that, our humanity is the connections we make to other people. It’s shared joy, shared love, shared laughter. Shared sorrow. Our compassion. To build a society is to connect people, to share with others. Tywin and Joanna is a society of two.
(That weirwood net of shared consciousness fascinates me - it’s an idea GRRM has written about before in his other works, and he keeps coming back to it.)
So those handful of smiles: for his wife, for the birth of his (first two) children, for his greatest accomplishments (gruesome as they are).
And the pain in this passage: “when Aerys II announced Ser Jaime's appointment from the Iron Throne, his lordship went to one knee and thanked the king for the great honor shown to his house. Then, pleading illness, Lord Tywin asked the king's leave to retire as Hand.”
And the utter and absolute pain in this one: “With her death, Grand Maester Pycelle observes, the joy went out of Tywin Lannister, yet still he persisted in his duty.”
It’s like a shot glass filled with sorrow. In AGOT through ADWD, the sorrow in those books is slow; it’s (mostly) meant to be sipped, and savored. But the way we experience Tywin’s pain, as GRRM writes it, it’s quick and it burns, and it burns out just as quickly as we move on to Tywin’s next atrocity.
So, for me at least, Tywin and Joanna are like a distilled version of ASOIAF. It’s the moments we share that make us human, and when Joanna died, Tywin’s humanity died with her.
That might not be the most helpful thing for writing a fanfic, so let me give you some other reasons:
My favorite short story is “The Last Rung on the Ladder”. I think I first read it ~20 years ago, and it still haunts me. It hurts. It’s about a brother and sister. It’s about taking things for granted, about the people we depend on, and about what happens when those people are no longer there.
“You're my big brother. I knew you'd take care of me.” “Oh, Kitty, you don't know how close it was.” [...] “No,” she said. “But I knew you were [...] there.”
Maybe this applies to Jaime and Cersei too, and Tywin/Joanna are just a different iteration, but it’s what keeps me coming back: what happens when the people you depend on ... the people you think are always going to be there ... what happens when those people -- those lifelines -- are gone?
Despite Tywin being (imo) a very social person, I think Tywin had very few real friends. In addition to being his wife, Joanna was Tywin’s friend, someone he could talk to, and confide in, and trust. Someone who made it all real. Someone who made it worth it.
And I think Tywin thought Joanna would always be there, the same way that everyone in AGOT-ASOS thought Tywin would always be there, “eternal as Casterly Rock”. I think Tywin always imagined that Joanna would outlive him, like it never occurred to him that she would die first, but instead she died when he was in his early 30s. That’s life-shattering to have the rug pulled out from under you like that.
Similarly, I think Joanna had this idea that she and Tywin would be together, but instead he was “often away”. We’re told that they were children together at Casterly Rock, but then at ~10 Tywin was sent away to be Aegon V’s cupbearer, and later he went away to war on the Stepstones, and then after her wedding Joanna had to be sent away because of Aerys, and we have Tywin sent to Lys at some point. What did it mean to her, that Tywin wasn’t there? For Joanna, I don’t necessarily think that Tywin not being there was entirely a bad thing, at least eventually, although I imagine it was painful at first. I think these forced separations from Tywin allowed her to grow, allowed her to eventually rule the Westerlands in Tywin’s name while he was away.
The thing that I always think of when I think about Tywin and Joanna is this poem, “Mrs. Beast” by Carol Ann Duffy, and I always think of this line, “Bring me the Beast for the night. Bring me the wine-cellar key. Let the less-loving one be me.” The more loving one is Tywin in my mind, no doubt about it. (I played with this poem for Tywin/Joanna here.)
There’s this scene I imagine in my own fanfiction, about a year before Joanna’s death, where there’s these silent tears, this despair on Joanna’s face, and Jaime asks his mother why she’s crying, and she says, “Because your lord father is home.”
I think Joanna always loved Tywin, to the very end, but Tywin is a difficult person to live with. I think his homecomings eventually became bittersweet. On the one hand, the love of her life has come home to her across hundreds of miles through snow, through bandits etc, but on the other hand, whenever Tywin comes home, Joanna has to take a back seat. Tywin sucks all of the oxygen out of the room. Everyone has to take a back seat to Tywin: “It has been hard for Kevan, living all his life in Tywin's shadow. It was hard for all my brothers. That shadow Tywin cast was long and black, and each of them had to struggle to find a little sun.“
This is all kind of leading into another reason I like Tywin/Joanna in that it’s an exploration of gender roles, and the ... the limits that women are under in Westeros, even under the very best circumstances. With Joanna, she’s white, she’s filthy rich, she’s a top-tier noblewoman, she’s beautiful. Contrasted against Rhaella, Joanna has a husband who loves her so much that we get lines about Joanna ruling Tywin and how this man who never ever smiles smiled for her. But there are still limits. We’re told that Tywin was ruled at home by his lady wife. Joanna’s influence is restricted, it’s dependent on what power Tywin gives her. While Rhaella physically was confined to Maegor’s Holdfast, Joanna’s influence is confined to the domestic sphere.
Westeros is a broken place, one that’s always been broken into little pieces (Seven Kingdoms, not one). Westeros breaks people. Like Mrs. Beast in the poem, I think Joanna was able to forget, for a time, about the world’s abused women. She was able to forget that Westeros breaks people, and that it especially breaks women. I think Joanna thought she was the exception, that she would have more, achieve more, do more ... and eventually I think she hits a wall, realizing that Tywin is her limiting factor, even as he lifts her up and grants her the power to do.
It’s these limits that fascinate me about House Lannister as a whole. Like, the Lannisters are introduced to us as infinite. (Thinkin about this a lot lately.) Bottomless wealth, eternal life, unfathomable beauty, all I do is win win win. But over the course of the books GRRM knocks all of this down and shows us that there is a finite quality to House Lannister. Tywin dies. With Jaime, I think GRRM is exploring the limits of redemption imo. Cersei is going to hit a wall. It’s that the culture of House Lannister, their fundamental values -- they don’t work.
Tywin is the poster boy of Westeros - he is the feudal system, he’s the face of its misogyny, he’s the walking embodiment of classism and income inequality and privilege and everything horrible about Westeros.
I don’t think it was ever possible for Joanna to be dealt a winning hand with Tywin, The system is rigged against women, and a woman would have to break the system entirely to win. But Tywin is the system, so it just doesn’t work.
I think of Joanna as a tragedy.
um.
idunno if any of that is helpful, but i sure wrote a lot. Also, I really like power couples and courtly intrigue and stuff like the Borgias. Hopefully that helps a little bit, I’m so sorry.
If you want to read other stuff I wrote, I collect my Tywin x Joanna writings under this tag:
#tjmeta
And these tags might also be useful: #joanna meta and #tywin meta
I’m so sorry, please know that I will absolutely love whatever you write! There are so few fics of Tywin/Joanna that I am excited for anything.
(Also I hate Aerys and he can go fuck himself. I think that Tywin tried to see Joanna as a person, as much as a man in such a deeply misogynistic society can see a woman as a person. I think Aerys saw Joanna as a battlefield. Also I really hate the theory that Tyrion is Aerys’s. Really hate that.)
Ok, im sorry, ILU SANTA! I HOPE YOU ARE ENJOYING BEING DONE WITH YOUR FINALS AND HAVING A BREAK!!!

Carole Baskin Net Worth 2021: How Much She Made From ‘Tiger King’ Netflix?
Carole Baskin’s net worth from Netflix’s Tiger King is almost as mysterious as what happened to her missing husband, Don Lewis, who vanished in August 1997. By now, everyone and their moms has seen Tiger King, Netflix’s seven-episode docuseries about the private ownership of big cats in the United States. But the documentary doesn’t only explore animal abuse in our own backyard, it also follows…

Fandom: The Walking Dead.
Setting: Alternative Universe, Fictional town, set in Georgia.
Rating: T (Unless noted differently in individual chapters)
Characters: Carol P., King Ezekiel, Jerry,Henry, Benjamin, Nabila, Sophia P. Some instances of Ed.
Summary: If someone were to tell Carol that her daughter's attendance at a summer camp, would forever change their lives, she would have laughed in their faces. Life wasn't in the habit of handing her fresh lemons. But as chance would have it, meeting the charismatic camp director was the best thing to ever happen to Carol.
Chapter One
The supermarket was empty that morning. For a summer morning in Loudaine, that was to be expected. Everyone hadn't stirred and wouldn't for another hour at most. Carol liked grocery shopping around this time. It was quiet and less hectic.
Carol readjusted her purse strap and headed toward the produce section. Sophia was close at her side with her hand on the cart, head turned, silently taking in all the sugary confections on the shelves.
"Mornin'," a man named Todd greeted. He was the early shift produce stocker. A friendly fellow, who was especially helpful to customers.
Carol smiled at him and stopped by the apple bin. She selected six apples, bagged and weighed them before moving to next thing on her list. She repeated this task until she had all the fruits and vegetables that she needed.
"Ew spinach." Sophia scrunched her nose. It was the first thing the girl had said since entering the store.
Carol chuckled. She knew Sophia hated spinach with a passion. Although, she found ways to incorporate it into her food, like blending it into pasta sauce or adding it to mac and cheese.
They turned down another aisle to grab bread for sandwiches. It was getting too hot to spend most of the day in the kitchen. Hot meals were typically reserved for dinner. When Ed was home from work.
Carol sighed and grabbed canned tuna. She wouldn't think about her husband. Not right now. She would focus on the freedom that at least grocery shopping afforded her.
The two of them finally turned down Sophia's favorite aisle. Carol snickered upon seeing the sparkle in Sophia's eye.
"Go ahead, pick one," Carol gestured to the wide selection of cookies.
Sophia raced to end of the aisle and grabbed a packet of Keebler stripes. One the way back she passed a boy who looked around her age. He was holding a packet of peanut butter Oreos and a packet of sugar cookies.
Carol remembered seeing the boy earlier in the aisle with boxed juice. She wondered where his parents were. He seemed to be confident on where to go and what to grab, so it was unlikely he was lost.
Again Carol checked her list for the umpteenth time to see if she had missed anything besides what remained. She rolled her eyes knowing she had to go to the liquor section for beer. She hoped they had what she was looking for. She couldn't go home empty handed and she didn't feel like store hopping to find it either.
Fortunately, the Red Dog was in stock. There were enough to get three cases. She loaded her cart and carefully rolled to the checkout lane. At the register, a young man was reading over the produce code list. Sophia began loading the lighter items on the belt, being mindful not to crush the eggs.
"Did you find everything alright?" The cashier inquired, scanning the items.
Carol read his name tag. "Yes Benjamin, I did." She was a regular customer of the supermarket so knew she the boy a was a new hire. Couldn't have been no older than seventeen.
Benjamin nodded and kept scanning. He bagged as he went, leaving the eggs and bread for last. He came around to scan the cases of beer that remained in the cart. He then placed all of the bags in the cart before ringing up the final total.
"Would you like to buy a bag of ice?" Benjamin asked.
Carol shook her head. She pulled a hundred dollar bill from her wallet. "No. That's okay."
Benjamin accepted the payment and quickly made the change. "I'll help put those groceries in your car. If that's okay?"
Carol smiled at the teen's politeness. Usually, she would have to ask for assistance. She nodded and moved on toward the door with Sophia by her side.
The boy from the cookie aisle was sitting on the bench by the door, with his purchased goods and a backpack. He looked up expectantly, making eye contact with Benjamin.
Carol didn't want to come across as noisy, but she was curious. When they were out of earshot she asked Benjamin. “Do you know that boy?"
Benjamin snorted. "Yeah. That's my younger brother Henry. He's waiting here at the store until our Dad can take him to the rec center. It's not open for another hour."
"I see," Carol stopped at her parked Jetta. She popped the trunk to give Benjamin access. She went around the side to open the door and to roll the windows down.
"Yeah our Dad works overnight, and doesn't get off until eight," Benjamin explained, loading the groceries. "It also so happens the rec center is on the way home. Having Henry already here at the market saves a trip."
"Makes sense," Carol agreed, taking some of the bags with the more fragile items to the backseat of the car.
Benjamin closed the trunk and took the empty cart. "You're all set, ma'am. Enjoy your day."
"Thanks, and you too."
On the way back home, they passed the recreation center. Outside, two of the counselors were pitching up the volleyball net.
Carol didn't miss the way Sophia perked at the sight. She could see from the rearview mirror the longing on her daughter's face.
The community recreation center hosted a yearly summer camp. It had an annual fee, that wasn't expensive per say but also wasn't an expense they had to spare. Although, if her husband stopped buying cigarettes and booze, they could afford it.
Sophia deserved to do something fun during her summer vacation. More than the occasional play date, and trips to the library.
The internal conversation was over-visited and was never presented with a solution. Just with a rebuttal as to why it would never happen.
Carol sighed. Yet another she needed to leave.
-----
At the Recreation Center
The volleyball tent was pitched and ready to go. Ezekiel swiped the sweat and reached for his water bottle. It was barely eight o' clock in the morning and it was already hot. He was too eager to return to the air conditioning of the recreation center.
In the gym, Jerry, his second in command, tested the recently pumped basketballs.
"Morning Boss," Jerry saluted. "Ready for the first day of camp?"
"Am I ready for hundreds of kids, nonstop chatter and plenty of mischiefs?" Ezekiel chuckled."Sure, I even have my lucky kicks on."
Jerry dribbled one of the balls. "Oh snap. Not the lucky kicks," he twisted and shot the ball into the nearest basketball net. The ball went in with a smooth 'swish'. "They're not gonna know what hit them."
Ezekiel's lips twitched into a smile. They shared this light-hearted banter throughout the day. It was how they kept their spirits high and the kids interested. Although, when the circumstances called for it, they were serious and professional.
"We've got about an hour before the first van arrives," Ezekiel announced. "I'll need you to assist Debbie with check-in." Debbie was one of the center's newest counselors, replacing Julie who was on maternity leave.
Jerry dipped his chin. "Sure thing."
Ezekiel exited the gym and next door to the cafeteria. Inside, the workers were adding items to the serving tables for breakfast. He scanned the room, searching for one woman in particular. He spotted Nabila rolling in a cart laden with milk crates. He quickly crossed the room to assist her with unloading the milk.
Nabila was the head of the kitchen and over the center's garden. She was also one of his longest-standing employee's since he became the director eight years ago.
"Oh, thank you," Nabila huffed once they were finished. She fanned herself and swiped at her forehead. "All this running around makes it feel like the air condition isn't on."
"Trust me, it is," Ezekiel assured her. His eyes fell to the newest member. "Everything going smoothly?"
"Yes, Lisa is a sweetheart. Very helpful and gets along with Kevin just as well. I think she'll do just fine," Nabila reported. "She's good at keeping inventory also."
"Excellent, that is what I like to hear," Ezekiel clapped a hand on her shoulder. "You stay hydrated now."
"Yes Sir, I will." Nabila grinned. She disappeared into the kitchen, no doubt to grab a cold bottle from the fridge.
Ezekiel chuckled. He left the cafeteria and walked down to his office. There were still matters that needed his attention. He had a very capable staff, even with the newest additions to the team he was confident things would go as planned.
-----
The idea came to Carol while she was stocking the deep freezer in the garage. She would pawn the two TVs given to them by Ed's brother Ross, her watch that was an anniversary gift from three years ago and the electric chainsaw that was still in the box from black Friday last year. Ed never used it. To be a matter of fact, she was sure he had forgotten all about it.
She checked the flyer that came with the town's newsletter, learning that late admission was acceptable. Given that today was Monday, the first day of camp, the late admission fee didn't start until next week. It was perfect.
Carol put her plan into action. She hadn't said a word to Sophia, wanting to surprise her instead. She loaded the TVs and the boxed saw into the car and all but sprinted to her bedroom. For the hundredth time, that day she was thankful Ed was at work. She grabbed the box that housed the watch and even grabbed the small studded diamond earrings. She never wore them nowadays anyway.
Sophia was sitting at the table reading when Carol returned. She glanced at her expectantly from her book. "Mom?"
"Come on, I've got an errand to run." Carol beckoned.
Sophia closed her book and stepped into her sandals, and followed her mother to the garage. She frowned upon seeing the backseat of the car loaded with the TVs. She slid into the front seat and buckled up.
The ride was short, but time seemed to slow to a crawl. A bunch of "what if's" were racing through Carol's mind. What if what she had to sale wasn't enough? Would Ed notice that the items from the garage were gone? How would he react? Some days were better than others.
Carol pushed aside those thoughts. She didn't need the negativity. Not when she hadn't even made it to the counter yet.
-----
At the pawn shop
"Three hundred and fifty for everything," Dale informed her, after examining the earrings.
Carol blinked. "Even with the TVs?"
Dale nodded. "They may be older models but they are in good condition." He chuckled and added. "I have customers that appreciate classic electronics."
Carol smiled. "All right."
Dale made the transaction, printing the receipt and counting the money owed. "Pleasure doing business with you Ma'am."
Carol tucked the money away in her purse. "Thank you so much." She turned on her heel, barely able to conceal her excitement.
Once in the car she released the breath she was holding and turned to a curious Sophia.
"Sweetie, would you like to attend the summer camp at the center?"
Sophia's eyes widened. "But you said it was too expensive?"
"I've got the money now," Carol started the car.
The realization dawn on the girl. "So that's why you pawned all those things? Won't Daddy be mad?"
Carol resisted rolling her eyes. She was sure Ed would be pissed. It wouldn't be the first time. "Don't worry about Daddy. I'm doing something for you, so he won't mind." Ed was more forgiving when she did things for their daughter.
Sophia was smiling now. "Okay."

Scalloping: Florida Adventure of a Lifetime
This is the five year anniversary of NatureCoaster.com. In honor of the event, we will be running two weeks of our most popular stories, beginning with our first scalloping adventure in Homosassa. It was early – much earlier than I like to wake up. The alarm was scheduled to go off in 7 minutes, but I was ready to greet the day. I had been counting down for two weeks and I was ready to go on my first scalloping adventure! At one time, the West Central coast of Florida supported a robust commercial scallop industry, with 400,000 lbs. of bay scallops being harvested in Florida in 1957. By 1992, the commercial harvest was near zero. Fishery groups banded together and worked to restore the scallop populations to healthy levels and by 2005, most years showed a healthy level. 2016 pre-season surveys showed a good population in the Nature Coast, so this would be the year to actually try this area tradition. Because my husband is not fond of seafood, I sought another friend to try the adventure with me.
When to go Scalloping & Who to Charter with
2019 Scalloping season information is available here. You can find a NatureCoaster partner to book a scalloping tour with here.
Tumblr media
We enjoyed the sunrise as we eased up the Homosassa River, headed out to the scallop grounds. Starting out early gets the best catch Jade Palmer was the brave soul who jumped in my car at 6 a.m. and we traveled to MacRae’s of Homosassa to meet Captain Ed Brennan of Red Ed’s Adventures at 7 a.m. sharp! Ed is a 50-something Irishman who has lived in Homosassa since the mid-1980s. He claims that he is the undisputed “Scallop King.” As part of our charter, everything we needed to hunt for our shellfish: snorkel, mask, fins, a bag to put our bounty in, and instruction in the technique that was most likely to yield the most scallops was included. After we settled into the open boat, Red backed into the Homosassa River. The surface of the water looked smooth as glass while we glided away from civilization. The captain opened the engine up; the air was fresh, the water still, and the sunrise was breathtaking to behold. We drove past several inlets, channels, and tiny mangrove islands that broke the surface irregularly. At one point a mullet fish flew alongside the boat!
Tumblr media
We surely appreciated the beauty and tranquility of being some of the first scallopers on the water that day. Getting out early has its advantages Captain Red was navigating the Salt River out toward the Gulf of Mexico. We traveled for a half hour with the world to ourselves. As the engine hummed, Jade and I enjoyed the beauty of the sun rising over Florida’s Nature Coast. The boat slowed to a stop amidst lush sea grass beds. The Crystal River Power Station was in the distance. All around us was peaceful and serene. This is the environment that scallops thrive in. Our Captain put up the dive flag to warn other boaters that we were swimming about as required by Florida law.
Tumblr media
Jump in and get Scalloping NatureCoasters! You're gonna LOVE it! Ready, set your dive flag, and get wet We donned our snorkel, masks and fins, lifted our legs over the side of the boat and dropped into the clear salt water, enveloped in balmy wetness. I looked down and sure enough, there was a scallop sitting upright in the grass below. I took a deep breath, bent at the waist and dove with my arm extended to pluck it from its nest below. I joyfully placed it into my net bag and looked around for Jade. She was floating peacefully turning her head back and forth to locate the elusive bivalves below.
Tumblr media
Jade shows off a beautiful, gentle starfish that she found while searching for scallops. Found it - and then they're all over! Suddenly Jade dove, then quickly came back to the surface, showing her catch. Captain Red cheered us on. He helped us to dive more efficiently, sharing some of his “Scallop King” techniques and was able to assist in harvesting the gallons and gallons of deliciousness we brought back to shore. We swam into the current so that when we got tired, it was an easy float back. The current was tricky to see from above the water, but when submerged the sea grass flows back and forth with the current and the sparkle of sunlight breaks through the water, creating a whimsical pattern.
Tumblr media
Recreational Scalloping is a blast. If you choose to go on your own, remember to get your Florida Saltwater Fishing license and use a dive flag. It's like swimming in a giant aquarium Fish were swimming with me, under me, by me. Soft corals and sea anemones were embedded in the grass. The underwater life was stunning. It was such a magical experience to be in that giant “aquarium” that I forgot the purpose of my snorkeling several times and just relaxed in the sea. Suddenly another scallop would appear below bringing me back to focus. Our captain had explained earlier that if you find one scallop, there are often more in the vicinity. He claimed to have brought up at least ten in a single breath.
Tumblr media
The net can help you hold multiple scallops per dive, if you can hold your breath. Can you get more than one at a time? Although I tried on multiple occasions to bring up more than one scallop in a breath, I inevitably ended up breathing in sea water and still harvested only one scallop, either dropping the other or kicking up the sand which reduces visibility and thusly, how many scallops I could find, so I resigned myself to being a single scalloper for my maiden adventure. In the twinkling of an eye, Captain Red called us back to the boat. It was time to return. With his help, we had amassed 5 gallons of raw scallops and would now head back to the dock for cleaning and cooking. As I looked around, there were many boats dotting the vista now, each with a dive flag and snorkelers searching for the prized Gulf bay scallop. It was about 10:30 a.m. “That’s why we leave at 7 a.m. promptly,” Captain Red said, “It gets crowded out here, especially on weekends.”
Tumblr media
Scalloping diver image courtesy of FWC. Image by Tim Donovan. The scallops are alive and active Jade and I looked down at the scallops and watched them jostling and spitting in the five-gallon bucket. It was entertaining. Take a minute to enjoy the video. We gave each other a high five and sat down while the Captain took up the boat's anchors. The waters had stayed serenely still. “The quiet water helps with visibility,” Captain Red said, “It’s a lot easier to see the scallops when the water is clear.” We agreed and were very happy with our adventure’s harvest.
Tumblr media
Local Boys offers dockside cleaning of your fresh caught scallops in Homosassa. Local Boys cleaned our scallops for a nominal fee As we pulled up to the dock at MacRae’s, Local Boys Scallop Cleaning was there to clean our catch. The $5/gallon to clean them was more than worth it to me. This seasonal enterprise, owned by Cletis Huggins, and operated by the Huggins family is available throughout the entire scallop season. While the scallops were being cleaned, Captain Red walked us over to Shelly’s Seafood and Wild Sassa to experience some local fresh seafood places. Homosassa is a tight-knit fishing community, proud of its offerings. Wild Sassa can cater your scalloping adventure if you feel so inclined. I am told that the food is amazing, whether you eat at the picnic tables out front or on your vessel.
Tumblr media
We made arrangements ahead of time with Oysters restaurant in Crystal River to cook our fresh-caught scallops for us. Have your scallops cooked for you too After tipping our captain, we picked up our cleaned scallops and headed up to Oysters in Crystal River to have our fresh catch cooked. I called William Bunch, Oysters owner and Chef, to alert him that we were coming. He welcomed us when we arrived and took our freshly caught and shucked scallops to the kitchen for processing. After agreeing on having some scallops blackened and some fried, Jade ordered clam chowder and I ordered gumbo. We enjoyed the soups and relished in our adventure as we waited for the main course.  William went back to work his magic. We were still giddy from our adventure and talked about how beautiful the water was, how much fun it was to hunt for scallops, and the wonderful feeling of the salt water while communing with the sea life in the Gulf.
Tumblr media
Scallop Dinner catch by Carol Lyn Parrish. Image courtesy of FWC. There are more than scallops in a scalloping experience We had seen dolphin, osprey, mullet and who knows how many fishes swimming around us. Jade commented, “The water, the sea life, and waving sea grass made this experience more than I could have imagined. The scallops are a bonus – and I can’t wait to eat them!” In time, William came back with two large bowls of our catch, one blackened and one fried, along with plates for each of us with heaping sides of macaroni and cheese and his delicious hush puppies. Just how good are fresh caught and cooked Gulf of Mexico scallops? The scallops were so tender, succulent, flavorful… and satisfying. Wow! We ate them all. Now it was time for a nap, so I dropped Jade off and that night I went back to my kitchen.
Tumblr media
Scallops on the Half Shell: easy, quick and delicious! But wait - there's more... We still had a lot of scallops left, including about 4 dozen we had the Huggins’ clean “on the half shell.” I placed all my scallop shells on cookie sheets and preheated my oven to 450 degrees. After melting ¼ cup of butter, I gently brushed some on each scallop in its shell. Then I sprinkled blackening seasoning on and placed them in the preheated oven for 3 minutes. Delicious, nutritious and fun. I ate every one of them while they were hot. The fork was leaving too much scallop on the shell, so I switched to a spoon and enjoyed every morsel.

The Short & Sweet skinny on Scalloping adventures in the Nature Coast
Hopefully this article has helped to whet your appetite for a scalloping adventure. It is so fun and easy! There are a lot of ways to go scalloping, from frugal (wade out in the gulf) to top-shelf (charter your Captain) and in-between (take your own boat or better yet – join a group charter). Whatever way best fits your budget, you are sure to enjoy the experience of floating in the Gulf, hunting for each scallop and then bagging your catch. And, of course, consuming these delectable gems. For all the latest regulations on scalloping, click here. There are several scallop tour operators on NatureCoaster.com. The ones at the beginning of the list are our partners. They paid to be listed first, which helps us keep NatureCoaster.com work for you. But give any one a call and book your trip before September 24.
Tumblr media
The official Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission Scallop season map for 2019. Don't forget to Book Ahead Many local restaurants will cook your catch. It is a good idea to call ahead to make sure they can accommodate you. The dock at MacRae’s of Homosassa is the only place I know of that has a scallop cleaning service. Many captains will clean your catch for you. Some have a set price and some will do so for a tip, but please make sure you are clear about your expectations before booking your charter. If you are going to rent a boat to participate in this endeavor, please discuss this with your marina before you rent. You will need a saltwater fishing license, snorkel, mask, fins, and to show a dive flag, as well as knowledge of where to find the scallops. You will want to have a cooler and ice to store your bounty while you travel, as well as sunscreen and drinks for your time on the water. Read the full article

A Christmas Carol in a Time of Moral Bankruptcy
2018 marked the 175th year since the publication of A Christmas Carol. 2019 sees among other things a new BBC television adaptation and stage version at The Old Vic. Even if you have never read the book, chances are you are familiar with Charles Dickens’ story, or at least parts of it. The storytelling and the moral core are woven into the culture in Britain and America; the story of a man who lives to make money and dominate others finding out, during the course of one Christmas Eve, that his eternal soul will be damned if he does not changed his ways.
There are literally more versions than I can (be bothered) to count. From TV adaptations to classic films to stage productions to school plays; modern-day updates and cartoons; Alistair Sim, Albert Finney, Jim Carrey, Patrick Stewart and Scrooge McDuck have all played Ebenezer Scrooge.
But the reason I am writing this is to discuss the love and hate that this story brings out in me every year; there is nothing I am saying that as not been said before. Yet I feel compelled to say it still.
The story itself is easy to admire, built like so many stories by great writers on simple yet deep story-telling traits and character arcs. It is inventive, with the use of fantasy to push real life struggles into sharper contrast, promoting sympathy; empathy and sadness.
We have our favourite versions; I love the Muppets with Michael Cane giving genuinely I think one of his best performances (singing aside) and the TV version with Patrick Stewart; an underrated one that dials down the schmaltz and shows the hardness of poverty, with a tough performance by Stewart to match. His is a genuine transformation from vicious capitalist to caring human and a very physical one; as he goes from looking like a piece of flint to slowly softening his features as he grows into a better man.
Such performances are celebrated and cherished, making many of those lazy pointless lists every year of favourite past cultural thing you relive because we are incapable of making anything new.
But all of this is perhaps part of the problem I have with the story too. The way we can watch, cry even, at how someone can change their ways and then fail to do anything ourselves for the very people that Dickens wishes us to care about. The story was inspired when Dickens read an 1843 report describing terrible living and working conditions in the Industrial Revolution in Britain. He could read the same thing today and find a callous population sifting through piles of shit to find the pile that does not smell as bad, so they feel superior to each other.
In this world, we can clearly see real Scrooges, except unlike their fictional counterparts, they never learn nor change. They do not need to. Our society and the way culture is organised worships the rich and punish the poor for their perceived failure.
The rich are in fact totally cut off from humanity.
So why should these greedy bastards change? We are never going to make them. The real Scrooges utterly destroy our lives all year long; then expect every Christmas to put that aside and wish each other meaningless platitudes of good will.
The biggest enemy in the story is the carelessness fundamental to ignorance and the damaging power of want. It makes the most vulnerable what they are; victims.
While I do not think the original story of A Christmas Carol is meaningless sentimentality, I think too many experience it exactly that way; feeling elated at the goodwill at Christmastime vibe and stepping over the people in the street on your way out the theatre or cinema. In London for instance, you could attend a performance at a theatre like the King’s Head (formally in Islington) and step out to a modern London as lacking in human warmth as Dickens dreamt of. Up the road is the Union Chapel church, who run a winter shelter, providing food and shelter for those in need. Every year the church has a screening of that other hope-filled story for the season, It’s a Wonderful Life.
Modern Britain still likes to present A Christmas Carol every year despite it teaching us less and less and the years roll by. The world this story is now told in looks like this:
One and a half million people use foodbanks each year
More foodbanks across Britain than MacDonalds
1-in-3 children in poverty; that is 14 million Britons living in relative poverty
Growing benefit claimants in work
Reduction in life expectancy for the poorest
120,000 deaths of people thrown off benefits, including the disabled
The richest 1000 families resident in Britain, which includes bankers and financiers, have doubled their net worth during the austerity era.
Non-British children being charged for citizenship (since defeated in the court, no thanks to the British people).
To top it all, this information being widely known before the 2019 General Election and still the population gave the Conservatives a majority despite them causing all this misery.
Councils in some parts of the UK have embarked on clean up (or you might argue cleansing) campaigns targeting the homelessness in town centres with Public Space Protection Orders (PSPO); homeless people are routinely fined hundreds of pounds and in some cases sent to prison for the ‘repeat offence’ of asking for money. Local authorities in England and Wales have issued hundreds of fixed-penalty notices and pursued criminal convictions for “begging”, “persistent and aggressive begging” and “loitering” since gaining strengthened powers to combat antisocial behaviour in 2014, by Theresa May when she was Home Secretary. Rough sleepers are harassed and landlords (as Mr Scrooge was) have gained far greater powers to evict tenants sooner and with less reason.
Charities and solidarity organisations give the option to buy a coat or hat or gloves for a refugee or homeless person; they however are in no doubt this is a sticking plaster; the purchasers I am not so sure about. It reminds me of something Naomi Klein said about the present order insisting on finding some way to buy our way out of the problem; be it poverty or climate change or a bunch of other shit.
The party that our present Prime Minister leads contains MPs who openly admire the Victorian era and all the social wankery of top-hatted toffs passing the peasantry in the streets. Plus we have sociopathic self-haters like Priti Patel hovering over the Human Rights Act with a metaphorical knife.
Refugees are another group not afforded decency; we deny people their rights, violate those we pretend to give them; punish them for the crime of crossing a boarder and even threaten communities that protect them. The Conservative Party manifesto for 2019 targeted traveller communities with attacks on their rights, including increased powers to take their property.
A child will become homeless 'every eight minutes' in the UK (Shelter, Dec 2019) or suffer insecure accommodation; meanwhile schools have an average of five homeless children.
Ignorance for sure; want for the same people as ever; dire need for change not answered.
Our societies do not embrace those less fortunate than us; we blame them for their own predicament and indulge in poor hate. There seems no bracket of people we can rely on, as even children's writers like JH Rowling indulge in one of modern society's most vile vices, trans-hate.
The empathetic are a dying breed.
Around Christmas people will often give more to charity, commonly Crisis as they run their huge shelters over the festive period in various cities to feed and shelter the increasing numbers of homeless people across Britain. Keeping up with the state of poverty in general and homelessness in particular is no easy task. One reason is we forget about the needs of people the rest of the year and only the magic of Christmas makes them give a shit for a week. This is just liberal conscience-wash if you do not back it up with demands for change in the system, which the British public have just shown they are unwilling to do.
Yet the system – capitalism in the only form it really exists – is embodied by Ebenezer Scrooge. The end of the story is pretty clear; Scrooge stops being cold and heartless; he will no longer allow the market to run without interference. He rejects capitalism for something wholly more humane.
Much of the problem in A Christmas Carol, like It’s a Wonderful Life later on, is the dehumanising effects of capitalism. The individual change required in Ebenezer Scrooge is a rejection of his hardcore individualism and embracing the needs of others, to the point of saving the life of Tiny Tim; his banker counterpart Mr Potter must be defeated by George Bailey and his supporters (although like in the real world, Potter is never jailed). At the beginning of A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is a miserable man beset by loneliness and isolation. His nephew refuses to give up on him though, always inviting him from Christmas in his warm, happy home despite constant rejection by his uncle.
The rampant free market gave us Ebenezer Scrooge as an everyday occurrence, year round with no ghosts to haunt them into decency. In the real world, Ebenezer Scrooge does not change his character no matter what happens. He is Philip Green, who dodges taxes, sells off a business knowing it will collapse soon, tries to abandon paying staff their pensions and pours scorn on the elected officials trying to hold him to account for the way they look at him. Green in particular managed the near-impossible in 2018 of seeming even more repulsive, with revelations of abuse accusations from many former BHS staff; from bulling to sexual harassment along with homophobia and a general staggering lack of respect for his staff. He is scum and will never reform.
In the 1980s we had Scrooged, a non-traditional adaptation starring Bill Murray as Frank Cross, a ruthless TV executive whose every cruelty was rather too enjoyable, along with his abusive Ghost of Christmas Present giving him much-needed kicking.
At the end of the film, Cross invades the set of the live adaptation of A Christmas Carol that his over-worked staff are producing, proclaiming that the meaning or power of Christmas is how for one night a year ‘we become the people we always hoped we would be’; that is, we smile more and are nicer to each other. This sums up the 1980s very well and why progressive and socially just forces lost that particular war so badly. This piss-weak response to be a little nicer to each other is why people die in the street. The film is also an example of the age; doing all this good for one night a year (how 1980s).
In Michael Moore’s first film Roger and Me, we witness the General Motors chairman of the title Roger Smith at the GM Christmas party, giving a speech that includes extracts from A Christmas Carol. This is inter-cut with footage from Flint Michigan, the town devastated by GM when they outsourced their workforce to cheaper parts of the world. While this pompous twit quotes Dickens and the wonder of Christmas, a mother and her children are evicted. That scene says more about our culture than any other I can think of in any film.
It is well told but worth remembering that in 2008, when the perfect economic system crashed, the people were responsible were bailed out and did it all over again, with the consequences being completely directed toward the least responsible yet again. The horror this unleashed has never relented.
From a consumer perspective, Christmas never ends. As a postman, I deliver to people massive amounts every day and it is never enough. They answer the door, perfectly politely, take the packet(s) and discard them as they sign and/or shut the door. These wonderful items are given that much thought; just the latest play thing or dress up. Literally discarded before opening because this in one of many deliveries probably that day. I am nothing to them; just a cypher to bring their life a meaning it never gains; I used to like being part of a public service, keeping people connected and possibly educated; now I just feed an addiction. This hyper-consumption will bring the system down again and whose fault will it be this time?
A Christmas Carol’s message is one that every Christmas we seem to get further away from. It is used to stroke the egos of the guilty and make them think nothing else needs to be done. Just be a bit nicer to the people you ignore the rest of the year, maybe even slip them a fiver (although not your postman or other service provider anymore it seems). You do not challenge poverty and homelessness by simply not liking it or giving a bit of pocket change, just like you cannot challenge racism and sexism simply by existing in a certain position socially or economically. However you feel, someone is still sleeping on the concrete tonight.
A Christmas Carol is less a morality tale and more a fantasy; but for the consumer not the writer. In the Britain of 2019, we have no moral right to tell this story. No version should be staged; no adaptation on TV; no school play. It should not entertain, nor pander to the desires of selfish consumer-obsessed grown-babies to make them feel a little better. This country has just voted to make the poor suffer more; to keep the status of 1-in-3 children suffering poverty – which will grow – and destroy the National Health Service. Tiny Tim is just a failure and when he dies, we just move on.
You have no right to a Merry Christmas, nor to discuss god as anything other than a punchline. The fix is in and no one cares. Misery for all is the name of the game today and if you want better, you are a fantasist.
Britain is a horrible little shithole of a country. Mean and worthless, in love with a horrific dream of decrepit empire in a world becoming dangerously hot.
Merry Christmas? Fuck you and your family.

All the Drag Queen (and King!) Makeup Tips from Backstage at Opening Ceremony's Spring 2019 Show
"All these queens doing their own makeup, you never see that at any other show," Humberto Leon said backstage at Opening Ceremony, marveling at the larger-than-life performers installed at the pop-up vanity tables inside Le Poisson Rouge. Fashion regulars have come to expect the unexpected from Leon and Carol Lim's label (a trip to Disneyland, a costumed ballet), and this season a collaboration with the Ru Paul's Drag Race winner Sasha Velour manifested as an all-star cabaret show. Surprise headliner Christina Aguilera might have brought the pipes, but the drag stars and club kids cranked up their own volume—with mile-long lashes and wigs teased to the max.
Of course, performance-ready makeup is all about serious staying power. For Peroxide, a member of the House of Fem-Anon who was sporting darkly fantastical eye makeup and a precise black mouth, it's all about Wolfe body makeup. "I use their black paint as eyeliner—it's so smooth, so quick, so easy," the performer reported, wearing a mouth painted in it, too, topped off with Jeffree Star matte lipstick. The pigment comes in a pot, designed to be mixed with water, "but if I need it to stay for a long time, I'll put it on with setting spray. It lasts forever." (And stains the tub—a small price for perfection.)
A magnetic Miz Jade, swanning through a cloud of her own setting spray, divulged the maker: Green Marble. "People use it for underwater photo shoots, and I sweat a lot, so I need it!" Meanwhile, the corset-cinched Scarlet Envy, hand outstretched for a manicure touchup, talked up Kryolan's fixing spray. "It's industrial, and it's probably not supposed to be for your face! But I spray it on, and it works for hours and hours and hours," she said, batting her false lashes coated with Mally waterproof mascara—"just in case the song is a little emotional. And you've got to love Aqua Net," she added, her blonde waves cascading from a perch seemingly inches above her head. "I don't know if the environment feels the same way, but volume can't be traded." For his part, the drag king Hyst´ée Lauder—decked out in aviators and a tidy mustache—ascribed facial-hair staying power to "lots of spirit gum."
That exercise in permanence carried over in the next room, where the backstage makeup artist Thomas de Kluyver—busy fine-tuning the rest of the cast's one-off looks—was painting model Jazzelle Zanaughtti's lips with Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink liquid lipstick. If the mouth was all about precision, her Bowie-esque pink eye shadow was smeared on with the fingertips; meanwhile, the model in the next chair sported a rainbow of tropical hues around the eyes—a loose interpretation of the universal pride symbol. (The entire cast, along with the makeup team and the hairstylists, led by Holli Smith, came from the LGBTQ+ community.) "A lot of the looks we're doing were inspired by drag makeup," De Kluyver said, citing icons like Divine and Lady Bunny. (Indeed, the impetus for the show was drawn in part from Leon's high school days, when he would catch drag performances at an all-ages club in Santa Monica called Circus—a reward for getting straight As in school.) "But this is much looser," added De Kluyver of the painterly, improvisational effect. "I wanted to make it feel now."
With downtown cool kids alongside Instagram stars like Hungry, who moonlights as Björk's makeup artist, now was exactly the vibe tonight. As for later, when it's time to get all that makeup off? "I go with a classic Pond's Cold Cream," Scarlet Envy said with a smile, "because I probably wear a little more grease paint than you do."
