Infinity Pool
Tumblr media
Summary: Struggling writer James Foster (Alexander Skarsgard) and his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) spend time at a seaside resort, where they meet Gabi (Mia Goth), her husband Alban (Jalil Lespert), their friends, and the dark side of the country in which they're holidaying.
Commentary on nepotism and privilege swerves at end of second act and doesn’t really recover. Still better than dad’s latest.
Rating: 3.5/5

Infinity Pool (2023, dir. Brandon Cronenberg) - review by Rookie-Critic
Tumblr media
I'm not really sure where to even begin with Infinity Pool. I'll just start by saying I'm not sure that I really understood it. Firstly, Brandon Cronenberg is definitely his father's son. Body horror and just a general sense of bizarre permeates every square inch of this film, and it echoes the strange vibes of the elder Cronenberg's Videodrome and The Brood. Sometimes this works in the movie's favor, and other times it doesn't. I think that the first two acts of the film are enjoyable and keep you drawn into what is happening onscreen. You want to see where the story takes Alexander Skarskård's character James Foster. The bizarre feels more intriguing than alienating, and Mia Goth is fascinating as who I would call the film's antagonist, Gabi Bower. However, the film falls apart in the third act. Sequences become longer and more abstract as James descends into a state that I would call madness, and everything just feels like a fever dream. The themes get muddied and the message is hard to grasp. The only positive from the first two acts that carries over is Goth, whose performance turns just as bizarre as the film itself, but in a very entertaining and functional way. Goth has really busted out of the gate over the past year and really found her niche, from X to Pearl to this, and she always looks like she is relishing every second that she gets to do this in a way that feels like she is inviting the audience to come along and enjoy it with her. She is quickly becoming a name that I associate with quality film making or, in the case of this film, a quality performance, at the very least. I think this is partially by design, but for me, Goth was the only reason I was still invested by the end of the film.
I think that Brandon Cronenberg's biggest problem, at least in Infinity Pool (I admit I haven't watched any of his other projects), is that he goes too abstract. A thing that I admire about his dad's film making is that, no matter how strange, or how grotesque and out there the events of the film get, David Cronenberg's films always have a very clear statement and very clear themes. There's no guesswork, really. Room for interpretation on the specifics and what each piece of the movie is saying, sure, but the overall through-line is clear and the moral of the story is always right there, available and accessible. They're still wildly disorienting and weird movies, but you know what you're watching. With Infinity Pool, I was never quite sure what exactly I was looking at or what I was supposed to be getting out of the experience of watching it. I have a couple of ideas, but they're loose at best. Also, I don't mean to just keep comparing father to son, but when their styles or so intensely similar to each other it is almost impossible not to. I'm not sure I can recommend Infinity Pool unless you're just in the mood for something that's very strange and not very rewarding of an experience. If I did give a reason to watch it, it would be because of Mia Goth's excellent performance and a pretty solid first two acts, but not much else. Maybe it's just a story and a message that is so alien to me that I'm never going to understand it, and this film could really resonate with someone else. I'm not going to give up on Brandon Cronenberg, I've heard good things about his film Possessor, but Infinity Pool wasn't a fantastic first introduction.
Score: 5/10
Currently only in theaters.

Bloody-Disgusting reports that the movie received an NC-17 rating from the MPA this week for “some graphic violence and sexual content,” but producer NEON intends to appeal to the C.A.R.A Appeals Board for a less extreme rating. Given the Cronenberg family’s penchant for body horror and other subversive material, the rating doesn’t come as a big surprise. But over the years, an NC-17 rating proves disastrous for a movie’s box-office success. Andrew Dominik‘s “Blonde,” another recent high-profile NC-17-rated film, may dodge those issues thanks to it being a Netflix production, but that’s the exception, not the rule. If NEON, Topic Studios, and Cronenberg want “Infinity Pool” to win at the box office, they need an R rating, not an NC-17.
Even the star power of Mia Goth and Alexander Skarsgård may not help “Infinity Pool” if it keeps its NC-17 rating. Skarsgård also serves as executive producer on the film, so he likely wants the film to be as financially successful as possible. But if the film wins over critics like “Crash,” which won the Special Jury Prize at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, an NC-17 rating could help “Infinity Pool” gain powerful cult status. A lower rating helps the movie more all-around, though, so it makes sense that NEON wants to appeal.
Here’s the official logline for “Infinity Pool”: James and Em are young, rich, in love, and on vacation. Their all-inclusive resort boasts island tours and gleaming beaches. But outside of the hotel gates waits something much more dangerous and seductive, beyond the edge of paradise. The plot alone gives off strong J.G. Ballard vibes, the novelist whose “Crash” David Cronenberg adapted for his 1996 film. Beyond Goth and Skarsgård, the film also stars Thomas Kretschmann, Amanda Brugel, Caroline Boulton, and John Ralston. Goth recently starred in Ti West‘s two horror movies, “X” and “Pearl,” while Skarsgård starred in Robert Eggers’ “The Northman.”

INFINITY POOL - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: NEON | Topic Studios
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  James and Em are soaking up the sun, having a perfect vacation at an isolated island resort of pristine beaches and exceptional staff. When they encounter the seductive and mysterious Gabi and her husband they venture outside the fenced in resort grounds and into the local culture filled with violence, hedonism, and untold horror. On the ride back to the resort a tragic accident leaves them facing a zero tolerance policy for crime: either you'll be executed, or, if you're rich enough to afford it, you can watch yourself die instead. James’ decision opens up a Pandora's box of nightmares and horrors that will fracture his reality.
REVIEW: Brandon Cronenberg’s screenplay for INFINITY POOL has a literary intensity reminiscent of the works of Oscar Wilde, Joseph Conrad, and William Golding. His commanding, mind-blowing visual style demonstrates the influences of, of course, his dad (David Cronenberg), Ken Russell and Nicolas Roeg. This is a ride not taken in ages and reminds one what an adult cinematic experience can be.
I’ve already dropped some literary references in regards to the screenplay. I’ve mentioned many times in the past that a good film based on a published work should leave you with a desire to read that work. This is the first film I’ve seen that left me with a desire to read the screenplay. This is a masterclass in storytelling. He seductively weaves a tale of a character’s epic journey into the dark night of the soul. You can almost hear the creatures of H. G. Wells’ 1896 science fiction novel “The Island of Doctor Moreau” cries echoing across the decades transformed into  Cronenberg’s contemporary characters grappling with the terrors of the human condition. Cronenberg brings horror back to its roots as he lays bear darkness of the human condition, a quest for the nature of the soul, in a darker, graphic, contemporary tale that is a cinematic reimagining, after a fashion, of Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” My only wish is that Cronenberg would have offered a more ambiguous ending.
This is an amazing ensemble cast. There is a brilliant depth to these performances that can only be achieved through a unique amount of trust between the director and his cast. These performances breath, expand and contract, impacting on the viewer’s psyche. It is so real, so intense that it stirs emotions like live theater. I must add, there was something about Alexander Skarsgård's performance at the beginning of the film where if you closed your eyes he sounded just like his dad, Stellan. It was creepy.
Cronenberg’s film work is profound. He transcends homage, weaving visual keynotes together into a cinematic symphony that ignites the viewer’s emotions. There are classic visual effects beautifully reimagined with the aid of contemporary technology. He makes the ugly, the horrific beautiful. There is choreography to his framing and editing, enhanced by the cinematography palette. The resort and the police precinct are excellent locations that he manipulates and exploits to the story’s advantage. I loved the way the film’s opening twits images of the resort to clearly set in the viewer’s mind that there is something not right here. He builds with the tools at his disposal what many filmmakers aspire to and what few writers achieve on the page.
INFINITY POOL is a bold, unflinching, stylized and mind-blowing assault on the imagination that is a contemporary masterpiece on the odyssey into the darkness of the human condition. From the page to the screen, it embraces many traditions but undoubtedly sets Brandon Cronenberg's position firmly as a maestro of the cinema, not to forget these arresting performances.. Nothing can prepare you for this cinematic experience that will leave an indelible mark on your psyche.
