Proven Solution: KenCast™ Breaks Through Abrasion Resistance Records Crushing Operations at Mine Site
Mining Doc Kennametal’s KenCast™ is known for its durability in highly challenging environments. It is air-hardened cast steel with metallurgic ally bonded tungsten carbide particles on the wear surface, which has been proven to withstand extreme abrasive and high-impact applications and could show a life improvement over standard wear solutions depending on materials and applications. Downtime can be significantly reduced. Don’t just take our word for it, check out the results from one of our tests. Downtime Means No Time for Second-Best A mining company in Brazil, known for its high volume of mineral extraction in the processing and production of gold, needed to reduce downtime caused by replacing wall plates in chutes used in its crushing operations. The environment in which the wall plates are used is predominantly abrasive. However, weight is also a factor, as the flow of minerals inside the chute can concentrate in several different areas and cause wear similar to an impact on the plates. Depending upon the area of the chute, most competitors’ wall plates used at this site provided only 15 to 50 days of use before downtime was required to replace them – according to the customer. The differentiated composition of the KenCast steel base provided superior resistance to abrasion as compared to competitor plates using a nodular iron base. While the competition’s plates were worn down and needed to be replaced, the KenCast solution kept going. After 90+ days of continuous operation, which brought us to February 2023, one of our Kennametal plates needed to be swapped out. However, one of the customer’s inspectors concluded that the remaining KenCast plate had the potential to continue its tool life for another 30 to 60 days. A accumulation of my knowledge for my drill powered tool obsession, a living document. Black and Deckers Home Utility Line were the trail blazers in this sphere from about 1950-1970. These tools were created because a good motor back then could be as much as a decent tool these days, and simple tools are sometimes sold this way still if they need to be cheaper then the cheapest brand (china/cheap stores), weight is a concern for shipping (china) or a motor is unnecessary (a paint mixer)

Drill press (old, cast iron, hard/$ to ship, medium rare, mine is 1960's black and decker cast iron and only works w/ vintage B&D's but generics do exist. Moderns tend towards cheap aluminum crap, also in euro vid)
Paint mixer (new, common, currently sold in stores, was also in the original B&D kits)
Lathe (new, rare, mine's a portable crappy brandless 90's kit I got second hand (50cad), want to convert to morse taper, never seen one sold new, there's a rare/heavy cast iron B&D one, also euro vid)
Half sheet sander (old, box, medium rare, only seen the one brand but it has no name, I have the original box, going to try more in-depth searching, no manual in my box, foam bottom)
Circular saw (old, rare rare if with guard. Almost all sold ones are an adapter to an open blade, but a few ones with safety covers and 'feet'/plates exist. Mine has no makers mark, there's a euro one that's also a tablesaw, I've seen mine around rarely, there's a rare foot one from B&D, a foot one from SHER, will research and update)
I want drill powered:
Electric grinder/sharpener, preferably dual disk (chinese ones have no toolrest, but can get one there easy, also home depot, there's a few varieties with rests but unsure any brands, B&D only sold an adapter chuck to a standard stone like china)
Jigsaw (hopefully monday buying one, medium rare, mine may have a brand visible, there's many brands for this inc B&D and euro vid below)
Quarter sheet sander (never seen one, but it surely should exist??)
Oscillating disk sander (never seen one online, may not exist)
Buffing wheel (either china or bulk set, original B&D, sold rn, difficult part is adapter chuck, can be diy'd)
Better drill lathe (old cast B&D preferably)
Router (never seen, may not exist)
Reciprocating saw (rare, but a few brands exist)
Band saw (medium rare, only seen on B&D, was sold new in 1987, plastic body, parts still replaceable 2024)
Original home utility line stand (likely as part of a bulk set buy)
Angle grinder (only seen in euro vid)
Scroll saw (only seen in euro vid)
Triangle pad corner sander (never seen)

A bunch of rare tools here, only seen in this one euro video, no idea the brand, blue and silver, looks like bosch or old style ryobi, more research needed, may be able to google translate some search terms. Working timeframe is 1960-1980, may be soviet era, german flag on pfp, many soviet era tools had no branding and are hard to track or source, esp with sanctions. Could try other ex eastern block countries ebay pages? According to comments it came as a giant set and only works with that specific drill

STARFIELD
It seems if it isn't a wooden box based on a video game, its a wooden character or metal cut logo. I swear I read books too, but most of my projects are based on games that I have played or my friends have played. For wire art, I often pull from real animals, even if my creations don't looks as realistic or I'll pull from mythology for dragons and hydras and such.
Into the Starfield. Just a few projects here. Some finished, others not. Most of the metal cutouts came from in game logos.


Galacti-Cat is made from padauk just like my wooden tigers. A simple carving that still sits unfinished on a shelf. I couldn't decide whether to drill through the shoulders and add rope arms like on a dog toy or put in a dowel like the wood panel wolf. One day I will get back to it. Also debated casting the head and ears in clear resin to be like a space helmet, but though I have used resin, I am NOT very good with getting the mixture just right.



Ryujin Industries had a neat logo in game and makes for a gorgeous metal card. Using aluminum, brass and copper plate I made some neat business card sized cutouts. The brass and aluminum ones almost fit perfect, but it is a tiny bit off. I did not attempt to solder them together.


Jemison Mercantile also had a neat logo, and though I made it recognizable, the edges are a far cry from straight. Aluminum cutout with just a sky blue paper backing
Space Pirates. The Crimson Fleet. A few versions of their logo. One beat up, scratched and dented for that official feel, I was still unhappy with it overall. I need to dig it up and take a picture of it to show, even if I don't want it to ever see the light of day again. The edge of it can be seen in that first Jemison Mercantile shot.



Instead, be horrified by these attempts at coin sized pirate skulls. The one up top, the aluminum one on the left and the right here are what the emblem is supposed to look like. The crossed behind the skull bothered me and the skulls nose is uneven. It just looked like an unhappy ghost shrugging and I had to change it.


Crimson Fleet Skulls in copper, brass and aluminum. I am much happier with these, even if they are not exactly what was seen in game.



Saw this logo on a flag in game, not sure what it represents, but I like the sword in a planet with a moon rising in front of a sun. Sadly another person mentioned it looks like Pac Man eating a sword and now I'll never be able to un-see it. Once again you can tell that my lines aren't perfect, but that is what I get for being a hobbyist.

Logo of the Freestar Collective in brass. Should I have just used a compass and made a perfect circle? Sure, but then it wouldn't have had that slight flaw that permeates through lots of my work.


Wood and Aluminum cut knives based on an in game United Colonies design. It has more detail in wood than it does in aluminum as I don't really have the tools on hand to cut all the relevant details. The aluminum knife does do great work as a prybar for cans of stain and sealer when needed.
