How to Download Movies and TV Series in the Castle App: A Step-by-Step Guide
In today’s digital era, streaming and downloading movies and TV series has become increasingly popular. The Castle App, a user-friendly platform, offers a streamlined process for accessing a vast library of visual content. Whether you’re a casual viewer or a cinephile eager to build your personal collection, this guide walks you through the essential steps to download your favorite movies and TV series safely and efficiently. Before you proceed, it’s important to note that users should always ensure they have the proper rights or subscriptions to download and view content, and that any use of the app should comply with local copyright laws and regulations.
Getting Started with the Castle App
The first step is to install the Castle App from a reputable source. Once downloaded and installed, open the app and sign in or create a new account. A well-designed user interface welcomes you, making navigation simple even for beginners. Familiarize yourself with the home screen, which typically features sections like “Latest Releases,” “Popular Shows,” and “Genres.” These sections help you quickly locate the content you’re interested in.
Browsing and Selecting Content
After logging in, you can browse through the extensive catalog. Use the search bar if you have a specific movie or TV series in mind, or explore curated lists and recommendations based on your viewing history. The Castle App often includes detailed descriptions, ratings, and trailers, which are handy for deciding what to download. Additionally, check the file size and download quality options, as these details help you manage your device’s storage and internet bandwidth.
Adjusting Download Settings
Before downloading, take a moment to customize the settings. The Castle App usually offers various quality options—ranging from standard to high-definition. If you have limited storage space or a slower internet connection, opting for a lower resolution might be more practical. Head over to the settings menu, where you can adjust parameters such as automatic download over Wi-Fi, subtitle preferences, and language options. These tweaks not only enhance your viewing experience but also streamline the download process.
Downloading Movies and TV Series
Once you have selected your desired movie or TV series, look for the download icon. Tapping this icon should initiate the download process. For TV series, the app may allow you to download individual episodes or entire seasons. It’s advisable to monitor the download progress, which is usually displayed with a progress bar or percentage. This gives you an estimate of how long the download will take. Additionally, some apps offer features like pause, resume, and schedule downloads during off-peak hours to manage data usage efficiently.
Managing Your Downloads
After downloading, the content is typically stored in the “Downloads” section within the Castle App. This section provides easy access to all the content you’ve saved for offline viewing. You can organize your library by creating playlists or folders, making it simple to locate your favorite series or movies later. Remember to periodically clear out older downloads to free up space on your device, especially if you’re someone who frequently downloads new content.
Optimizing Your Experience
For an optimal viewing experience, consider updating the Castle App regularly. Updates often include bug fixes, performance improvements, and new features that enhance user experience. Also, adjust your device settings to support media playback—this might include tweaking screen brightness or enabling a “night mode” for more comfortable viewing in low-light conditions.
Conclusion
Downloading movies and TV series through the Castle App is a straightforward process that, when done responsibly, can enhance your entertainment experience. By following this guide, you learn to navigate the app’s features, customize download settings, and manage your media library effectively. However, it is essential to emphasize that all content should be downloaded and enjoyed in compliance with copyright laws and the app’s terms of service. Always ensure that your activities support the rights of content creators and legal distributors. With proper usage and adherence to regulations, the Castle App can serve as a reliable companion for your cinematic adventures.
By taking these steps, you not only streamline your viewing experience but also maintain a digital library that’s accessible anytime, anywhere. Enjoy your movies and TV series responsibly, and let the Castle App open the doors to endless entertainment possibilities.

The YWCA Hollywood Studio Club: A Place For Women by Women
Tumblr media
The Hollywood Studio Club, listed in the National Register of Historic Places and designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 175, is located at 1215-1233 Lodi Place. It was a chaperoned dormitory, sometimes referred to as a sorority by its residents, and a place for young women involved in the motion picture business to gather. Located in the heart of Hollywood, the Studio Club was operated by the YWCA and housed some 10,000 women during its 59-year existence from 1916 to 1975. It was the home at various times to many Hollywood celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe, Ayn Rand, Donna Reed, Kim Novak, Maureen O'Sullivan, Rita Moreno, Barbara Eden, Dorothy Malone, Marie Windsor, Linda Darnell, Evelyn Keyes, and Sharon Tate.
When the motion picture industry established itself in Hollywood between 1912 and 1920, people came from all over seeking jobs and the demand for housing became increasingly more urgent. Young women aspiring to be actresses like Mary Pickford arrived unchaperoned and in need of safe housing. In 1915, a group of aspiring young women began gathering in the basement of the Hollywood Public Library to read plays. Librarian Eleanor Jones worried about all the young women living in cheap hotels and rooming houses with a lack of supervision and no place to study or practice their craft. To meet that need, the Hollywood Studio Club was born.
Tumblr media
Mrs. Jones solicited help from the local YWCA and a hall was soon established as a meeting place. Hollywood studios and businessmen donated money to rent a house at 6129 Carlos Avenue (pictured above but no longer extant) with space for 20 women. Mrs. Cecil B. DeMille and Mary Pickford were active in the club's operations, and as Pickford recalled, "Mrs. DeMille spent every day doing something for the club. And the motion picture industry supported us."
A newspaper article in 1919 described the Club as: "More of a sorority, with delightful picture 'atmosphere,' than anything else, and the same happy atmosphere will pervade the new home. A dominant note is the refining touch of home life and sense of protection, with assurance of assistance, not only in material way when need arises, but in one's work, as well. Financially, many desperate cases among young women have been tided over by the Hollywood Studio Club."
Tumblr media
The only qualification required for acceptance was that applicants had to be pursuing a career in the motion picture business, as an actress, singer, script girl, cutter, writer, designer, dancer or secretary. In addition to providing housing, the Studio Club offered various performing arts classes, and hosted dances, teas, dinners, plays, fashion shows, and stunt nights. The club supplied residents with two meals a day and sewing machines, hair dryers, laundry equipment, typewriters, theater literature, practice rooms, as well as a stage and sun deck.
Tumblr media
Between 1923 and 1925, with the need for safe housing growing ever more acute, a widely publicized fundraising campaign was held to build a new facility. Contributions were received from local studios including: Famous Players-Lasky ($10,000), Metro Goldwyn, Carl Laemmle ($5,000 each), Warner Bros. ($3,000), and Christie Comedies ($2,000). In March 1923, aviatrix and movie star Andree Peyre also orchestrated an aerial acrobatic exhibition and airplane race over Hollywood to help raise funds for the new home. In February 1925, a final $5,000 donation from silent screen star Norma Talmadge allowed the group to officially begin construction.
The organization hired acclaimed California architect Julia Morgan, most famous for her design of Hearst Castle for newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, to create the new building. Morgan had a long history designing facilities for women throughout California, beginning with structures funded by Hearst’s mother, Phoebe Apperson Hearst. Among her most significant achievements were the Berkeley City Club; Mills College; YWCAs in Pasadena, San Pedro, San Francisco, and Oakland.
Tumblr media
She designed the Studio Club as a large Mediterranean style building in three sections, with interiors decorated in "pistachio green, rose coral, and tan."  The central section has connecting wings on each side, with its entrance marked by a loggia, three archways with decorative quoins, and a painted frieze above the main entry. The building includes several recurring elements from Morgan's Mediterranean designs: full-length arched windows; balconies with iron balustrades; and decorative brackets. A writer in California Graphic said "this beautiful and spacious new building is but one more jewel in the crown of achieved results which this progressive and cultural little city is wearing so proudly and shows it’s ever increasing desire to give unstinted moral and financial support to every progressive endeavor."
Tumblr media
A ground-breaking ceremony took place in June 1925 with Mary Pickford and Julia Morgan in attendance. The new Hollywood Studio Club opened in May 1926 with a ceremony attended by 2,500 people. Built at a cost of $250,000, rooms were named for individuals who made subscriptions of at least $1000 to the building fund. Among those named were Douglas Fairbanks, Howard Hughes, Gloria Swanson, Jackie Coogan, and Harold Lloyd.
In 1946, the club was described this way: "The Hollywood Studio Club has been thought by the unknowing to be a house filled with glamour girls constantly receiving boxes of long-stemmed roses. On the other hand it has been classified as a rescue home for wayward girls. It is neither of these. The club is a comfortable sorority house possessing many of the freedoms and comforts of a man's club. It has grown in 24 years from the home for 22 girls and a white mouse into the home of 100 girls with another 100 servicewomen equally at home in the adjoining guest house”.
Tumblr media
By the mid-1960s, times had changed and the idea of a chaperoned dormitory became a dated concept. In 1964, the club expanded its membership to include studio secretaries, dancers, models and others working broadly in the field. Unfortunately, the club was losing money and badly in need of repairs and safety upgrades. The YWCA considered using it for executive offices or selling it, until a petition driven by residents persuaded the organization to keep the facility open. In 1971, the club became a regular hotel for transient women and stopped serving meals.
The Studio Club officially closed its doors in 1975. The building remains under ownership of the YWCA which has always maintained it. Within the last decade, the building served as a YWCA-run Job Corps dormitory and now performs the very important function as bridge housing for homeless women.
Please take a few minutes to enjoy our rare and wonderful gallery of over 100 photographs that capture the two different facilities, the stylish members of the Club engaged in a variety of every day activities, and the special camaraderie shared between these creative, enterprising young women during Hollywood’s own formative years.

Cedric, Grunt, and the dusty hall of records [Part 1]
Tumblr media
Screenshots of the Hall of Records in the Dark Castle, with Cedric introducing it
Recently, after getting a Hulu subscription, I decided to start a series called The Bravest Knight, a Hulu original animated series that came out in 2019. The story centers on Sir Cedric and his husband, Prince Andrew, and their adopted 10-year-old daughter, Ri. In the sixth episode, "Cedric & the Dark Castle," Cedric and his friend, a troll named Grunt, enter the Dark Castle, in an attempt to find the dragon who released all the villains from jail. The knights, which represent the authorities, are seen as incompetent as they can't even find the dragon and later laugh off tips from Grunt and Cedric which inform them where the dragon is hiding.
Reprinted from my Wading Through the Cultural Stacks WordPress blog. Originally published on Dec. 19, 2020.
I was pleased to see that this episode featured a Hall of Records but disappointed at how it was portrayed in the episode itself. Recently, the show's creator, Daniel Errico, said that he understands and said "I can assure you that the Hall of Records was abandoned for nefarious reasons outside of the archivists' control. But those books and papers have more to come, and their fate in the present storyline is very different." That's definitely a valid point, as Cedric and Grunt had to leave the hall of records because otherwise, the dragon would have burned them alive. Anyway, I'm glad he responded, which is rare for animation directors, as often they don't respond to people directly, with criticism like that. So, that's progress.
For one, this hall of records appears to be a bit like a library, unless I'm missing something. Couldn't the writers have used an actual archives as a model? If they wanted to call it a library, they could have done so, rather than calling it a "hall of records." Too many animated shows confuse libraries and archives with each other, which is understandable based on the popular conceptions of them in the media itself, but creators should try to do better. Anyway, they enter this room of the castle which is dusty and has cobwebs growing covering areas of the room, another archives stereotype, sadly. Clearly, it is not well-tended.
While Grunt reads a book, Cedric is excited about the information there, remarking that the maps and plans for every castle are kept there. Grunt states that all he sees are blueprints of the Fairy Jail, where the villains were imprisoned. When they both look at the blueprint, they hear a woman's voice, which happens to be from a messenger raven named Saylor. They soon realize the dragon has been hiding in the castle and Cedric desperately goes through the records in an attempt to find a map of Grunt's bridge. He is not successful, and they escape just in time. Later, the dragon sees the pumpkin that Cedric left behind holding down the blueprint and growls in anger.
So, on the one hand, the episode does highlight the value of archives in maintaining and keeping records. On the other, it appears to be like the Star Wars franchise, Lore Olympus (to an extent), possibly Little Witch Academia, That Awkward Magic!! (partially), and the Mystic Archives of Dantalian, in that it appears to confuse archives and libraries, acting like they are the same thing. Again, archives can be within libraries and often are in the form of special collections rooms, which can be called mini-archives, shown in series like Hilda and Cleopatra in Space.
Additionally, libraries can be inside archives, without a doubt. From what I remember about the Maryland State Archives, they have a set of books on an upper level available to archivists and on a lower level available to the general public, often books that summarize records within their collections. That set of books can be called a library. After all, the SAA's Dictionary of Archives Terminology defines a library broadly as "a collection of published materials, including books, magazines, sound and video recordings, and other formats." At the same time, the same resource defines archives in several separate ways, when it is used in a singular sense [1]:
"an institution’s or individual’s entire preserved body of interrelated and interdependent records; a fonds"
"a selection of digital records or digital surrogates of records made available as a curated online collection"
"a collection of manuscript collections managed as a thematic unit and representing a collecting specialization of an archival repository"
"an organization that collects the records of individuals, families, or other organizations; a collecting archives (usually construed as sing., earlier treated as pl.) the division within an organization responsible for acquiring and maintaining the organization’s records of continuing value; institutional archives"
"the official repository of a nation, state, territory, or institution’s records of continuing value"
"the building, buildings, or portion thereof housing records of continuing value"
"the professional discipline, practice, and study of administering such collections and organizations; archivy"
© 2022 Burkely Hermann. All rights reserved.
Notes
[1] This is not referring to those records created or received by an institution, family, or organization which are preserved, inactive records of continuing value, or records of continuing value which are organically created, or "non-record material selected, preserved, managed, presented, and used in the same manner as archives." Archives can also be used when noting "reference to a particular archival organization" or when something is archival.

Settling in
Tumblr media
I’m writing from our studio in Aix-les-Bains, which we have been moved into for about a week. The settling-in process has been much, much easier than it was last year. I never dreamed that our second year would contrast so sharply with our first, but I’m so glad that it does.
The studio
The “good lead” we had a couple weeks ago turned out to be the only one we needed. The utilities (even wifi!) are all taken care of by the landlady, and there are free laundry facilities in the building. It’s really small (around 250 square feet), but we get lots of natural light and we have a huge balcony. The location is pretty great too. Just up the hill from us is a beautiful view of the city, and we’re within 10 minutes of a park, a couple of grocery stores, and library. If the apartment starts to feel too small, we’ll have plenty of places to go outside.
Another little point of pride about our apartment: not only is our town featured in a travel book about France, the picture of Aix-les-Bains in the book has our apartment building in it! Ours is one of the ones in the foreground.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bank
I was able to keep my bank account from last year with no extra trouble. I needed to switch home branches, change my address, and get a new debit card, but that was all done in one appointment.
Old friends
When we were still staying in the Airbnb in Chambéry, our friends K and A from last year visited us. K will be an assistant in a school on the Atlantic coast, so they stopped by Chambéry on their cross-country move. The four of us walked around the old part of town, filling each other in on our summers and what we know about our new placements so far. We ate at a restaurant where we tried escargots and quenelle for the first time. Escargots gets a thumbs-up from us. I’m not sure I’d have quenelle again.
Tumblr media
New friends
Last weekend, France celebrated the Journées du Patrimoine, which is essentially a festival to celebrate French history and heritage. I used the event as an excuse to try to make some new assistant friends in the area, and sent an open invitation on a group chat for Chambéry assistants. We had one taker: a first time assistant, L, from Alabama. We went with her to an art museum, a castle, and an “everything is 2€” store. The highlights of the day were the organ concert and book-repairing demonstration that we went to. As more assistants arrive in the area we hope to meet some more people we can hang out with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exploring Aix-les-Bains
Little by little, we’ve been discovering what Aix has to offer. There’s a cute little park not far from our apartment, and there are always lots of people reading on park benches or walking their dogs. There’s also someone playing accordion about 50% of the time. The park has an amphitheater, and during the heritage festival, there were people teaching and learning popular dances from the Belle Époque. I like the idea of having a public event space so close by.

The lake is a 30-minute walk away, so it’s not someplace we’ll just go casually, but we went one afternoon last week and had a really pleasant time. It was a warm day when we went, so there were people swimming and tanning. It felt nice to put my feet in after the long walk. We sat in the shade and people-watched, then we walked a little ways down the pedestrian path along the lake.
Tumblr media
This afternoon, we went to a second park that is essentially a small forest right in the middle of town. We could still hear the sounds of traffic and construction nearby, but it looked like we were at Raven Run or the Pinnacles. The path we took was mostly uphill, but we were rewarded with a really nice view of the city at the top. I look forward to going back there again whenever I start to miss the more rural parts of Kentucky.
Tumblr media
Yesterday, I signed up for a library card. In France, you have to pay a yearly subscription to the library to check books out, but the man who sold me mine gave me the student price even though I told him I’m not a student. The library is smaller than the ones we are used to, but it has a huge collection of graphic novels, which are really popular with French kids and adults alike. I got two books for me (both graphic novels/memoirs) and two for Nicolas (one graphic novel version of The Iliad and one parallel French/English version of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde). There was a library in our town last year, but I never had the courage to go to it. Maybe it’s all in my head, but Aix feels like a much more accommodating environment for us and for our assimilation into French culture. Tomorrow we are going to try to sign Nicolas up for a French class, and see if I can find a conversation partner while we’re at it. Onward and upward!

Event: Līgosim Krastmalā 2017
Tumblr media
Location: 11. novembra krastmala (Vecrīga) Length of event: 19:00 - 4:30 Frequency of event: Once per year
Līgo, Līgo!
Happy solstice! While in the United States and much of the world the longest day of the year comes and goes with little fanfare, in Latvia and much of eastern and northern Europe mid-summer is still one of the most important dates on the calendar. Although technically the shortest night goes from June 21-22, in Latvia it's observed on the night of June 23-24 as the festival of Līgo (June 23) and Jāņi (24). I don't think it's an overstatement to say that this night is at least as important as Christmas for most of the country, with the festival often being called “the most Latvian holiday.”
Traditionally, Latvians go out to the countryside, build bonfires to dance around, sing songs, grill food over open fires, jump over campfires, make flower crowns (girls) or oak wreaths (boys), and do a host of other traditions and rituals. Many Latvians still go out to the countryside for this event each year, around 30% according to a recent study published. Līga and I went out with friends in the last two years far away from Rīga, and although we were looking forward to doing the same this year, we decided it was probably best to stick around in Rīga with our wedding coming up in just a few days. Staying in the city to celebrate such a countryside-related holiday is considered sacrilegious by many Latvians, but I also saw this as an opportunity to see how Rīga celebrates this important night.
The day before Līgo, we decided to check out the “Zāļu tirgu” (green market) that had been set up in Doma laukums (Dome Square). These types of markets happen here in the square every few months for different holidays, and feature artisans, craftsmen, artists, farmers, florists, and other merchants from throughout the entire country. As always, there was singing and dancing on a main stage right in the middle of the event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the favorite traditions for Līgo is the making of flower crowns for girls and women and oak wreaths for boys and men. Traditionally, only unmarried girls are supposed to wear the crowns, but that's a technicality that's overlooked by almost everyone.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Uh oh... There was a guy selling reprints of vintage maps. Maps are like an electromagnet to me, so I had absolutely no hope. I left with a very cool reprint of an old map of Rīga showing all of the traditional manor territories we usually write about in our different posts. I justified it by telling myself it would be useful when writing about those places.
Tumblr media
We also found Līga's aunt who was taking part in the market, selling very cool silk scarves.
Tumblr media
The next day, festivities began on the road along the Daugava's coast at 7:00 PM. We didn't get there until a bit after that, but we hadn't missed much by the time we arrived. As we walked toward the event area, I took a picture of Līga wearing the flower crown she had just bought in the almost empty central market with the train bridge and national library in the background. As you can see, the normally bustling 11. novembra krastmala between Akmens tilts (stone bridge) and Vanšu tilts (suspension bridge) was completely closed to traffic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As we walked into the event area, we were impressed by just how expansive the festivities were. The first stage we came across had a folk band playing music designed for dancing to, and the crowd in front of it was being taught how to dance together to each song. This provided a perfect opportunity for people new to Latvian folk culture to dip their toes into singing and dancing for the first time.

Tumblr media
There were different food and drink stands set up all throughout the krastmala, as well as picnic tables as far as the eye could see. The biggest shock of the night for me was just how cheap beer was going for. 500 ml of Mežpils (a very good Latvian beer) was just €2.50, virtually unheard of in any of the bars in Vecrīga. Although the event was designed to be affordable for ordinary people, I feel like they easily could have charged at least €4.00.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the very middle of the event was a massive festival-sized stage where Intars Busulis and Labvēlīgais Tips would be performing later in the evening. A sitting area facing the stage had been set up for people wanting to enjoy the music in a more relaxed setting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Further on down the krastmala were some different games set up for children, including a large memory flipping game, tic tac toe, and bowling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the far end of the event was another outdoor stage with more folk musicians and space for dancing. This stage shut down a bit earlier in the night, but up until about 22:00 or so quite a few people were enjoying the music and dancing along.
Tumblr media
My favorite thing by far about the event was how even though tasty food was for sale all throughout the area (especially traditional shaslik meat cooked on a skewer over hot coals), there were many fire pits which were completely open for people to use by bringing their own meat, vegetables, or whatever they wanted to cook. Many other such events would have discouraged or outright banned people from bringing their own outside food with so many vendors here, so I thought it was very cool that the organizers were promoting the spirit of Līgo and encouraging people to do it themselves as they would in the countryside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Intars Busulis and his “Abonementa orķestris” (subscription orchestra) started at 21.00 and played an impressive nearly three hours straight, with just two short breaks. The show was a mix of his own songs and a few traditional Līgo songs thrown in here and there. He tried his best to get the audience to sing along with him, but there weren't enough people who knew the words (or willing to sing) for it to be audible. I at least sang along to all the words of “Nākamā pietura Depo” although I'm pretty sure I was the only person who did so.
Tumblr media
In one large tent at the very far end of the event near Vanšu tilts and the castle, nearly a thousand people were packed in sitting around tables and standing, singing and dancing along to different Latvian songs with lyrics on projector screens at the front. The screens were too small to be useful for most of the people in the tent, but so many people already knew all the words to most of the songs that it didn't particularly matter.
Tumblr media
At 22.30, just as the sun was going down, Intars Busulis paused the show for a few minutes so that the large bonfires could be lit. There were two large stacks of logs, one on each side of the stage. Men had been pouring lighter fluid over the logs for the twenty minutes before they lit them, so I think that most of the crowd were expecting the logs to go up in an impressive blinding flash as soon as they were lit. Thankfully, they had been designed in a more safety-conscious way as you can see in the video. The announcers reminded the crowd over the loudspeaker that the fires would stay lit until the first light of the morning shone over the krastmala, per Latvian tradition.
Tumblr media
youtube
As Busulis and his orchestra continued, we finally decided to start standing in line for some chicken shashlik. Līga elected to get some fries as a side, while I went for the more traditional sautéed cabbage. All of the picnic tables were full as far as we could see, so we sat on the grass in true Līgo fashion.
Tumblr media
After dinner we went back to the dancing area we walked by first, which by now was completely full with a mix of people from all walks of lives and corners of the Earth. We stayed for a few minutes but weren't quite in the mood for folk dancing, so we headed back to the main stage where Labvēlīgais Tips was getting ready to perform at midnight.
Tumblr media
Labvēlīgais Tips played a respectable two-hour set that included virtually all of their hits, although I was a bit disappointed that they didn't play my two favorites Desmetais Tramvajs and Koka Klucis Konstantīns. Līga and I were glad though that they ended with their new song Frāzes, which we've been overplaying lately.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We left at 2:00 at the end of LT's set. Although there were still two and a half hours to go until daylight, we were quite tired and still had a lot of wedding planning to do at that point. When we left, the Jāņi fires were still burning strong.
Tumblr media
Overall, I was quite impressed by Līgo on the krastmala. Considering that Līgo/Jāņi is a festival that is so heavily associated with the countryside, I had very low expectations for what would be achievable by this kind of event. What the city was able to pull off was a perfect mix of countryside traditions and modern convenience. I find it difficult to imagine that virtually anyone who came down to the event aside from those with horrible attitudes could have had a bad time. Although it wasn't enough to convince me that Līgo/Jāņi shouldn't be celebrated in the countryside away from the loud and busy city, I would highly recommend checking it out next year if you can't make it out of Rīga on the 23rd for whatever reason.
A Few Final Thoughts:
Līgo is also Līga's name day. Daudz laimes vārda dienā, Līga!
According to the city government, there were 100,000 people who attended the event, making it the largest known collective celebration of Līgo/Jāņi ever. According to Līga and my very informal and unscientific observations, a bit less than half of the attendees seemed to be tourists or foreigners who live in the city. Despite this, virtually the entire event and all of the music was in Latvian.
This event could serve as the perfect rorschach test for one's views on globalism. On one hand you could look at this event as a corruption of Latvian tradition being watered down by all of the modern influences and showiness, while on the other hand you could say that it's a successful evolution of tradition for the 21st century. You could argue that the foreigners and tourists had no idea what they were really celebrating and were just there to generically party, or you could argue that Latvian tradition was being successfully dispersed and promoted in a way that no amount of money could buy.
There was a separate event taking place on Dzeguškalns in Dzirciems which was a far more traditional Līgo/Jaņi that Līga and I were planning on checking out at some point, but we were having so much fun on the krastmala that we had no motivation to make it over there.
It's always amazing just how bright it is all night this time of year. Līga took this picture just a few days before at MIDNIGHT from her family's home in Jelgava just 45 km southwest.

Eight summer activity ideas that will boost kids’ brains
Creative play can take many forms, even when access to public spaces and friends is restricted. (Gabriela Braga/Unsplash/)
Penny Pexman is a professor of psychology at the University of Calgary. Lorraine Reggin is a PhD student in cognitive psychology at the University of Calgary. Sheri Madigan is an associate professor and Canada Research Chair in determinants of child development at the University of Calgary. This story originally featured on The Conversation.
With daycare and school closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, parents have taken on more responsibility for children’s learning and development and for many this has been a major source of stress. The pandemic and the challenges of learning from home have definitely taken a toll on parents and children.
Parents and children are also grappling with cancelled sports, camps, and activities this summer, or reduced-capacity daycare centers. Parents typically rely on these activity and care options to keep kids busy, and parents’ time scheduled. This means unscheduled months ahead. Some parents undoubtedly will continue to struggle with finding ways to occupy their children.
We suggest whenever possible parents embrace the summer months as a time to encourage or participate in play.
Play can have real and measurable benefits for both children and parents because play nurtures the stable relationships and connections that kids need to thrive. And, when children and parents experience joy and shared communication together in play—what researchers call “attunement,” based on harmonious back-and-forth or “serve and return” interactions—this serves to regulate the body’s stress responses.
Playful activities can enhance children’s learning and development, and can also help make up for lost academic time due to COVID-19. Playful activities involve choice, active engagement and moments of joy or delight.
Play for foundational learning
Children’s academic skills—counting, recognizing letters, learning words and reading—are important and foundational for their school success. Yet in the absence of formal schooling, research shows that many of these abilities can be enhanced with a playful approach. For example, children who use numbers in their play (for example, a board game with number sequences and counting) tend to show stronger mathematics knowledge and interest. In addition, children who get to explore and interact with lots of everyday objects tend to learn more words.
Play with objects, and pretend play with objects, are both important learning opportunities for children and are related to their later language and reading development. Children actually understand stories better when they act them out with toys.
Puzzle play and play with construction-type toys (such as blocks or boxes) can support children’s math and spatial reasoning skills, or their abilities to recognize patterns and shapes. In sum, this more sensorimotor perspective on learning is important and something that parents could embrace in the COVID-19 context.
Healthy child development
When children have choice in their play activities, they can learn how those choices make them feel. In the process, they may develop important skills like managing their frustration. Maintaining focus on an activity is also a skill and one that children develop with practice. Research shows that children are more likely to engage in a task that they choose themselves and that they perceive as play.
Pretend play, involving imaginary characters and themes, can be particularly important for children’s developing social skills, attention and their abilities to be aware of others’ thoughts and feelings. This pandemic summer offers a chance for children to spend more time in these important imaginary or fantasy-themed play activities, both with parents and with siblings or by themselves.
Benefits of nature
During warm summer months, taking play activities outside may be particularly beneficial, for both children and for parents. Outdoor spaces provide new objects to interact with and new forms of the natural world to marvel at such as animals, insects, trees and sky.
The outdoors provides space for the physical play that is important to children’s motor development and to adults’ physical health. Beyond that, however, research suggests that time spent in nature restores our ability to think clearly, improves mood, and reduces anxiety.
Activities for learning through play
Outdoors:
Take a bike ride with the goal of finding certain numbers or letters on signs. Plan your route using a map and if appropriate, kids can calculate distance and speed or simply time segments of the trip.
Go for a walk in a park or forest, counting or naming logs, insects, birds or big rocks. There are many <a href="https://www.borntobeadventurous.com/2020/03/19/indoor-and-outdoor-scavenger-hunts-for-kids/">outdoor scavenger hunt ideas</a> available online. If you have access to a nearby pond or river spend some time throwing or skipping rocks.
Map out streets in beach or playground sand. Recreate routes to your favorite places. Or you could try <a href="https://runwildmychild.com/geocaching-with-kids/">geocaching</a>—using orienteering skills to find hidden boxes. Take out a prize and leave a new one.
Indoors:
Using some combination of toys and blocks, create a toy parade, battle, or themed party. For example, in your living room or snaking through multiple rooms, you can set up castles, towers, or a tea party.
Play board games or puzzles: These can teach reading, math, logic, turn-taking, and social skills. A few ideas include classics like Snakes and Ladders, Monopoly, Trouble, Mancala, or newer games such as Blokus, Ticket to Ride, and Carcassonne (Junior version or 7+ version).
Art and creative sorting and sensory projects: Keep cardboard boxes, tubes, and envelopes and give children access to paper, glue, scissors, markers, pens, crayons, and colorful items such as buttons, paper clips, ribbons or pipe cleaners. Let kids choose what they would like to create. They will probably surprise you!
Read riddles or I-spy books filled with hidden objects, or read aloud in a specially created “book nest” of blankets and pillows. Reading aloud is beneficial for <a href="https://theconversation.com/parents-play-a-key-role-in-fostering-childrens-love-of-reading-121089">little kids and big kids</a>. You can also use car rides as an opportunity to listen to recorded books, available either through your local library or a subscription service (ideas include <a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.ca/books/36204/the-bfg-by-roald-dahl/9780679428138">Roald Dahl’s <i>BFG</i></a>, Virginia Hamilton’s <a href="https://books.google.vg/books?id=4K8dibK521gC&printsec=frontcover#v=onepage&q&f=false"><i>Time Pieces: The Book of Time</i></a>, Gary Paulsen’s <a href="https://www.panmacmillan.com/authors/gary-paulsen/hatchet/9781509838790"><i>Hatchet</i></a>, Jason Reynolds’ <a href="https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/As-Brave-As-You/Jason-Reynolds/9781481415910"><i>As Brave As You</i></a>, <a href="https://www.harpercollins.com/9780061960901/the-complete-ramona-collection/">Beverley Cleary’s</a> <i>Ramona</i>, or classics <a href="https://www.harpercollins.ca/9780008108281/the-hobbit/">like <i>The Hobbit</i></a>). There are many free podcasts capturing kids’ interests on a variety of subjects, for instance <a href="https://www.npr.org/podcasts/532788972/circle-round">NPR’s Circle Round</a>.
Encourage a passion: If your child has always wanted to learn how to sew, carve, design a game, or build a Lego world, then this is their time to enjoy those unique passions.
Finally, the benefits of play extend to parents, too. When parents find moments to pursue fun and joyful activities, they relieve their own anxiety and model for their children the important relationship between playful behavior and health and well-being.

Amazon Prime Video vs Netflix: Which is a better streaming platform?
Amazon Prime or Netflix- Which is better? This question always arises our mind when we are forced to choose one out of the two. However, Netflix is the original streaming service. But, there are more choices now available. One of them is Amazon Prime which gives Netflix a tough competition.
youtube
But to choose one out of these two streaming platforms, we need to dig research on both of them. Here are various pointers to differ between the two.
1. Video Quality and Resolution
The streaming platform Netflix gives you three options when it comes to video quality and you can choose any of them. But, obviously, with these options, the price goes higher too.
Basic- HD (480p max)
Standard- Full HD (1080 p max)
Premium- UHD (4K max)
On the other hand, Amazon Prime provides you with the highest quality available of the video content you are watching with your Annual Subscription Plan.
You can also enjoy HDR support and Dolby Atmos audio quality with both the services. But, in Netflix, only Premium version comes with this support.
2. Number of streams
Both Netflix and Amazon Prime have set a certain limit to the number of streams. This prevents you from sharing your subscription with your friends and family. But, here too, Netflix has divided the number of streams in tiers. Thus, the more you pay, the more you can share it with people.
Basic- One stream
Standard- Two streams
Premium- Three streams
But, Amazon Prime does not offer any such tiers. In your package, you can share your stream up to three devices. Also, the same content cannot be streamed more than twice. However, Netflix Premium does not bind you with any such conditions.
3. Content
Hey @netflix, we'll cancel Stranger Things if you cancel Good Omens. 😉 https://t.co/EJPmi9rL7g
— Amazon Prime Video US (@PrimeVideo) June 20, 2019
Being a streaming platform, which makes the most significant difference is the type of content they offer. If you are a film lover, you might like Amazon Prime more as it has a wider range of films. But, most of them are B-graded, which you might not like to watch. On the other hand, Netflix offers a selected range of films but, they are worth watching.
Talking about television series, Netflix offers more content in terms of both quality and quantity. But, Amazon too has some great original shows which include Marvelous Mrs Maisel, and The Man in the High Castle.
But, the choice in terms of content definitely goes to Netflix.
4. Additional benefits of having Amazon Prime
The streaming giant, Amazon Prime offers you various additional benefits of taking the subscription. These include the free music app Amazon Prime Music and online library Kindle which offers a great range of e-books.
Talking about Netflix, you don’t get any other perks on buying any of the tiers’ subscription.
5. Price
The three tiers of Netflix cost as under:
Basic- $9 per month
Standard- $13 per month
Premium-  $16 per month
The Amazon Prime subscription costs $13 per month. And, you get an additional discount if you go for an annual subscription which costs $120.
Thus, if you want to go for the cheapest option, you can opt for the Netflix Basic package.
Conclusion
youtube
So, after considering all these pointers, what conclusion do we get? This means if you want to utilize most out of your bucks, you should definitely go for Amazon Prime.
But, in our opinion, you should opt a Netflix Basic plan and Amazon Prime too. This way you can enjoy the incredible content of Netflix and get the additional perks of Prime too.
For more tech-updates, keep watching this space!
