Saint Isidore the Farmer
1070-1130
Feast day: May 15 (New), March 22 (Trad)
Patronage: Farmers, laborers, national rural conference in the U.S. and rural communities
Saint Isidore the Farmer, also known as St. Isidore the Laborer, was born in Madrid, Spain to a farming family. He married Maria de la Cabeza who was also declared a saint. Deeply religious, St. Isidore attended Mass daily, though never neglecting his labor. Many times his guardian angel would take up the plow while he lingered in prayer. He loved the poor and animals, miraculously multiplying food for both.

On March 2, the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, MA, opened an exhibition titled “Icons & Retablos: Images of Devotion.” Created in collaboration with the University Art Museum at New Mexico State University (NMSU), it features an amazing selection of Orthodox and Mexican religious art. What might seem like a surprising combination is actually an incredibly thoughtful and informative project that highlights the stylistic and ideological similarities between Orthodox icons and Mexican retablos. “Icons & Retablos: Images of Devotion” is on view at the Museum of Russian Icons through August 27, 2023.
Featured image: Our Lord of Sacromonte and Our Lady of Sorrows, Señor del Sacromonte y Nuestra Señora de los Dolores, Mexico, 19th century, Oil on tin, NMSU Permanent Art Collection, Donated by Gloria Giffords and the Giffords Family.

We have SO many amazing things on our website (and in-shop, too), that it can be hard to catch everything. We have a stunning collection of antique Mexican retablos, and I wanted to share these two I just rephotographed and added to their listing, with even more close up details apparent. These two 19th century retablos feature Santa Rita de Cascia; when she was canonized in the year 1900, she was bestowed the title of Patroness of Impossible Causes. In Mexico, Santa Rita is widely venerated as the Patroness Saint of mothers, abused wives and heartbroken women. There’s so much more to her story — if you’d like to read it, and look at these pieces more closely, follow the link in our profile! #santaritadecassia #santarita #santaritaretablos #antiqueretablos #retablos #mexicanretablo #retablosmexicanos #patronsaintofmothers #patronsaintofheartbrokenwoman #morherhood #heartbroken #margheritalotti #catholic #catholicart #religiousart #folkart #patronsaint #art #decorate #antique #antiquepainting #antiqueart #shop #nyc #unionsquare #beadsofparadise (at Beads of Paradise NYC) https://www.instagram.com/p/CnIkP5OuaHY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

பொறுமை / Poṟumai (Patience) If you read my piece முடிச்சவிழ்க்கும் பெரியநாயகி, you would know that I am learning to take things one at a time. I have always been a person who's wanted to be one-step-ahead of (and the best at) everything, be it my studies, my personal obligations, preparations for my career or even my art at times. I don't know where this obsession with overachievement comes from, but I can acknowledge that it is not healthy. I've come to realise that in the long term, operating this way only leads to frustration, avoidance, exhaustion and even burnout. I had convinced myself I need to be where I want in life right NOW when I don't even know where I want to be yet. Sometimes it can get so heavy it feels like I have to bear the whole universe on my shoulders. And there one thing I took away from this really frustrating experience - patience. Patience is a virtue naturally coexistent with faith. Both patience and faith require one to let go of the outcome- something I find so disconcerting it's almost silly. I still have many questions, some of them so abstract they're formless. I'm still grappling with uncertainties regarding every single aspect of my life, but I'm learning to let things go and simply do what I can at the moment. It hasn't been an easy journey, but it certainly is an important one. Though the experience is pretty personal, I feel the lesson learnt is pretty universal. Hard work might be pertinent, but it's liberating to not obsess over the result, to let time and life take their course. It will be terrifying for sure, but through my conversations with family and friends, I have come to realise that things have a way of working themselves out. Maybe it's not such a bad idea to take a more laid back approach after all. #leanderscribbles#tamil#தமிழ்#tamilartist#tamilart#india#asia#southeastasia#asianart#buddhistart#thangka#catholicart https://www.instagram.com/p/CjM4g3khezL/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Spiritual Sunday: Nazareno (Feast of the Black Nazarene of Manila, Philippines) (Part I) The Feast of the Black Nazarene (Filipino: Pista ng Itím na Nazareno), also known as the Traslación after the mass procession associated with the feast, is a religious festival held in Manila, Philippines that is centered around the Black Nazarene, an image of Jesus Christ. It is celebrated annually on January 9. The Feast of the Black Nazarene commemorates the anniversary of the translation or the transfer of the image from its original location at a church in modern-day Luneta Park to Quiapo. The image was brought to the Church of San Juan Bautista in Bagumbayan (now Luneta) until May 31, 1606 by Augustinian Recollect priests. In 1608, the icon was enshrined at the Recollect church of San Nicolás de Tolentino in Intramuros. It was moved to the Saint John the Baptist Church, which is now commonly referred to as the Quiapo Church, on January 9, 1787. The "solemn transfer" eventually became the date of the Feast of the Black Nazarene. There are opposing views on whether to consider the Feast of the Black Nazerene as a proper fiesta due to the fact that the January 9 observance celebrates the transfer of the image and not the liturgical "feast day" of the image. The proper liturgical commemoration of the Black Nazerene is on Good Friday. In 2021, the Basilica’s parochial vicar Fr. Douglas Badong explained that the Feast of the Black Nazerene is a proper term for the religious event, and could be called a fiesta as the event is similar to the typical Filipino festival. #traslacion2023 #traslacion #nazareno #Nazareno2023 #SpiritualSunday #Spiritual #Spirituality #Mystique #Spiritique #sacredmystics #catholicart #catholicculture #catholiceducation #catholique #catholiques #romancatholic #romancatholicchurch #catholicmystics #catholicworld #intothemystic #catholic #catholicism #contemplate #Mindfulness #tradition #traditional #traditionalvibes #sacred #sacredculture #traditionalculture https://www.instagram.com/p/CnMiv-UyuFe/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book Review: Madonnas of Color
Though it can be devoured in a morning (as I confess I did), each tile in this gorgeous mosaic of a book is exquisite, worthy of its own prayerful contemplation.
I’m taking a break from relentless self-promotion to rave about the new book by Bro. Mickey McGrath, OSFS, a fabulous artist, storyteller, and human being. Check out my review on CatholicPhilly.com.
