finally sitting down to read ave's cavgender essay like a hundred years late, putting some highlights here as i go so i have them for my future reference.. anyway i know we KNOW this but . when in order to actualize one's gender you have to commit suicide in order to be more wholly absorbed by the technologies of empire... again metaphors that r so on the nose as to be almost comical but crucially still make me start chewing on furniture. like . masculinity as ideal used to organize and mobilize bodies rather than actual achievable status; masculinity as asymptote one can consistently approach without ever reaching it; masculinity as horizon that is constantly receding because its power as an ideal lies in its inability to ever be fully realized which means there is always more work to be done; so what happens in a world where you CAN actually perfect your gender but you have to pass through death to do it? what, if anything, does that tell us about the relationship between death and the forms of gender we know and experience?

i know people were (correctly!) bringing up the david-john parallels in your inbox, and i feel like pyrrha-joel are also parallels: you have a child (she's not your biological child, but that doesn't matter, you already lost your first one), and you won't give her up for anything, not even the world, not even if it hurts her
yes I feel this is very true... they're different in some subtle ways that I've been trying to tease out all day thinking about this ask. a big one is just their genre; Joel is in a zombie genre straight up, while Pyrrha's sort of a zombie trapped in a zombie drama but she knows beyond that she's actually in a space epic. I also think there's an interesting aspect of gender... Joel is so intensely attached to his dadgender while Pyrrha is trapped in a sort of failed cavgender. she's got like a ghost gender. her social role is no longer accessible to her, even through Nona, and I think that's what drives her intense protection of all that she has left. vs Joel's social role is protecting Ellie. basically lol I think Pyrrha is 10x more interesting than Joel sorry to this man 🥲

Fovea
[from Latin: Fovea - pit, hole in the ground]
Definition: A gender identity associated with a bottomless hole or pit tethered to the material world. There may be vague feelings or associations to other gender identities around it, like stones piled up around a well or mosses growing on the inside. However, the defining feature is always not knowing what lies at the bottom, or if there even is an end. The hole can never be filled.
When questioning one's gender, it may feel like throwing a rock into a well to see when it hits the water's surface, or into a pit to check for its ground level, but it keeps falling endlessly and no noise echoes back. It may also feel like standing at the edge of a dark hole, not being able to see anything past a few metres in.
Fovea can fall under agender and is always under the trans umbrella. It is kenochoric in nature.
Flag:
[Image Description: Five striped flag with a big black circle in the middle. The stripes, from top to bottom, are black, light green, medium green, dark blue-green and black again.]
The black stripes stand for being tethered into a material world as "borders" (different from, for example, black holes or floating in a void).
The green stripes stand for the feeling of descending into a pit, having less and less visibility the farther down one goes.
The black circle stands for the hole or pit itself.
Similar terms:
Cavgender: Gender that feels like deep, digged hole in the ground. May or may not be connected to dirtworms and grass/plants.
Gendervoid: Gendervoid refers to a gender that is an absence, a blank space, or a void, where a gender might otherwise be.
