And suddenly forced to make my own decision over a position where I used to make none, I am reminded of all the cracking facades of private school.

I remember crying once the zoom call ended. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen a teacher cry. Yet, in between classes, or through the window of the admins office, or in the hallways after faculty meetings, I get a glimpse of the saddest emotion. With their eyes suddenly tired, lifeless, skin sagging, they look straight on, stoned face with the saddest little frown.
I imagine the conversations. And I imagine that the teachers just want to teach. That they do really like the kids. Sometimes more than the deep pockets love them. Do they take pity in the privileged? Well, in some ways, I also do.
But I think I’m being much too cynical. It’s actually now kinda embarrassing. After talking with my mother, she reassured me that some parents actually do just want the best for their kids. And listen to the teachers, and are good parents. But most of the mothers at SA were not like her. Most of the mothers had daughters that spoke Spanish because they were raised by someone else. Most of the mothers sat in hot tubs with other mothers and other mother’s husbands in the Cayman Islands or Aspen or Positano or Peru. My mother wore her best jewelry and a distant disliking to the parties she was invited to. She watched as my father tried to play the room, saying shit people with real money would never say, and quietly faced the window on the drive home. She didn’t need their approval, in fact she hated their lives. Saw the emptiness inside their giant homes. But she did need everyone to know that. That she was somehow in on a secret that made everyone else look like fools. And maybe she is proud of the person I’ve become. With a cynicism as sharp as hers. Maybe she thinks it could only possibly come about by being just as smart as her. And she has my education to thank for that.
