CELL THEORY – The Basics
Cell theory is a set of tenet that all cells (and therefore living organisms) must abide by. It was originally made in the nineteenth century and today for the most part is still recognized as being correct, though points have been added and some are debated upon.
The original cell theory had three tenets that we are going to discuss.
1.     All living organisms are made of one or more cells
Let’s think of cells as Lego blocks. If we’re playing with Lego blocks our creations are made up of at least one block. They can also be made up of many blocks and these blocks can be of all sorts of different colours, sizes and shapes for a variety of functions and jobs that serve a purpose for the whole creation. But even one block alone can still make something too.
Living things are the same way; some of them are just single cells like prokaryotes and Protista. But some of them can be made of many cells like you and me.
This tenet is one of the most debated because it defines what a living organism is, some like to argue that a virus is alive but we’ll discuss that another day.
2.     The basic structural and functional unit of an organism is a cell
Let’s continue with the idea of Lego blocks, like we said before we can have creations made out of many blocks or just one block. But we can’t get any smaller than a single Lego block. These blocks can be many different sizes, shapes and colors but they are still the most basic unit you can have.
Cells come in many different shapes and sizes, which is important because they have different roles and jobs they need to carry out-especially when it comes to multicellular organisms, ones with many different cells.
To carry out different jobs and to be alive cells have many different working parts that are called organelles. These organelles play different roles in the cell, but if you take a single organelle and make it work by itself it cannot sustain itself. It’s only with all the organelles together in a cell working together that you can have something alive. This is why a cell is a functional unit, it is the smallest and simplest structure that can carry out all the functions of life.
We’ll see the idea of functional units later, for instance a nephron is the functional unit of the kidney. And we’ll also talk about organelles later too.
3.     Cells can only arise from existing cells
Here we can think of cells like something we want to photocopy, if you have nothing to bring with you to the photocopier how can you make anything? You have to bring the original with you to the copier and rely on existing machinery to produce a new copy.
Cells have many ways of dividing that can lead to different things, but all of them require a stage of duplication. Cells simply don’t make new cells out of nothing, and they also require the machinery that their organelles possess to generate new organelles.

A Macrophage is in the white blood cell group and part of the immune system. * They patrol around the body, entering affected areas, engulfing and destroying bacteria and other invaders, as portrayed in this image. * They also act as a janitor, cleaning up dead cells and other debris around the body, keeping it clean. * * #macrophage #bacteria #immunesystem #whitebloodcells #singlecell #organism #prokaryotic #eukaryotes #humancells #biotechnology #biology #cellbio #staphinfection #archaea #medicalillustration #medicalanimation #scientificillustration #scientificanimation #singlecellanimation #sciart #viscom #science #scicomm #newyorkcity #newjersey (at Boston, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/Btnxu0GhwW7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=kh1jxf7hmttz

It's official everyone, Dr. Wes's one minute exam pearls ( #1minexampearls ) has started to go viral, and he's creating multiple versions of his popular and fast-growing educational short-form video series, across multiple social media. This particular video is a crossposting of a TikTok recording, but he'll also be producing independent versions of these lessons on Instagram Reels, Snapchat, and other media. Here he's giving a brief lesson on a very high-yield topic: keeping track of chromosomes in mitosis, the primary cell division mechanism in eukaryotic cells, something that comes up frequently exams from elementary school through college and medical school. He has a dozen videos so far posted and many more recorded, with more to come through the summer and fall. It was a nice project to take on while Kant's Konundrum was on ice amid the pandemic, and now the music is picking up right alongside the public teaching efforts online. Stay tuned. . . . . #viralseries #onlineteaching #onlinelessons #mitosis #cellcycle #biology #cellbiology #cellbio #instagramteacher #exampearls #exampreparation #examprep #chromosomes (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ4-nF4gic0/?utm_medium=tumblr
