Kopos Kos 🪿 for your travels
(wip content)
Kopos Kos, a proud and quickly developing nation located across what we know as Vietnam and Cambodia. The current emblem is definitely not my proudest work😓
The bird featured is a great cormorant, domesticated by our sophont wallabies (now called Walaba), used to aid in fishing to supply the Kepa-ka-o-o populations which base a lot of seafood in their diet as opposed to Walaba whom are completely herbivorous. The great cormorant represents initiative, resourcefulness and union between peoples, and is worn as a symbol of patriotism in Kopos Kos.
Kopos Kos was originally established as a farming colony, taking advantage of tropical soils and the abundance of wildlife but quickly established itself as a trade center, bringing in many Lau merchants and immigrants who began making their own settlements. The name Kopos Kos originally referred to a single town, though it is now a giant web of interconnected cities and villages across large stretches of land. By human terms it would be a country, however this concept doesn't yet exist on Beatha.
Because Walaba are herbivorous, livestock is generally uneeded in terms of meat, however domestic animals remain a common sight. The water pig, the equivalent of a Central Asian boar, is a new discovery that has been quickly integrated into agricultural life.
Tumblr media
While many wild boars are aggressive when threatened or nervous, this domestic species tends to be docile and flees rather than fights if it comes down to it. Water pigs live in forests and jungles, preferring darker environments. Because of their excellent sense of smell, they are particularly good at locating food and water sources in areas that would be almost impossible to navigate through if you were unfamiliar with them, proving helpful to early settlers who often found the pigs near streams which lent them their name. Coincidentally, it was later discovered they have an excellent swimming ability. In Kopos Kos, water pigs are kept for their manure which is an incredibly efficient fertiliser for crops. The pigs also dig up root vegetables, and can be trained not to eat the roots and allow an owner to collect them instead. This process also aerates soil, which means automated tilling of small fields. Of course, even if they're not kept for meat, water pigs will eventually die. The skin can be harvested for leather, bones for jewellery and tools, hair for clothing and paintbrushes, etc, while the meat is sold off to Kepa-ka-o-o and Lau or used as food for meat eating domestic animals.

Myths About Luxury Watch
If you want a watch, you will just need to buy a watch. But now, after the advent of inexpensive, battery-powered quartz watches in the 1970s—a time not affectionately known as the quartz crisis—you must go to your local jeweler and buy a "luxury mechanical watch made in Switzerland".
The impact of East Asian exports on the traditional industry has proved devastating, and the only way for Switzerland to turn the tide is to rebrand its shares in the trade. Instead of making “watches”, the Swiss are now crafting precious heirlooms that have a pulsing soul and heartbeat. The perfect antidote to our busy and never out-of-date digital age. That, of course, is all we love about exceptional (but clearly underappreciated 50 years ago) timepieces. However, there is an unfortunate flip side anything associated with various C-words such as "collection", or "cult", creates a fanbase that grows by telling stories. And, like automobiles or fashion, the wonderful world of watches also has cynical detractors, shunned by a culture they don't understand and are eager to disparage.
Here are 7 myths about luxury watchmaking that deserves debunking for your clarity and reassurance:
IT’S A WASTE OF MONEY
There's no way to solve the problem:
For what a smartphone in your pocket considers unnecessary and takes up almost a small amount of space on your arm, an expensive Swiss watch. You may be used to spending a lot of money on clothes, but at least this H&M jacket will keep you warm, right?
There are hundreds of reasons behind the exclusive pricing of luxury watches, from unique and rare skill sets to manually making a mechanical watch movement to R&D and complex machine building, plus the huge cost of living in Switzerland. But in the end, the cost is worth it for two things: watches are an investment and will outlast anything else in your wardrobe, and at the same time they make for rich, emotional heirlooms. As long as the watches are getting serviced in regular intervals the cost of each wear will always be Southwards from generation to generation.
THEY ARE NOT PUNCTUAL
In contrast to the 15 seconds every day controlled by your wind-4Hz up's oscillating balancing spring, a quartz-regulated watch loses or gains about 15 seconds annually at the whim of a crystal vibrating at 32,768Hz.
Given all the bumps, shakes, tremors, and gesticulations your wrist causes to such a delicately placed constellation of components, it's really not that horrible in the big picture and perfectly serviceable for daily timeliness and a triumph of micro-engineering. The fact that Parmigiani Fleurier's test center contains a robot that simulates tooth brushing only serves to highlight the difficulty every excellent watchmaker faces, but always manages to overcome.
IT COSTS A BOMB
Expanding on Myth No. 1, all Swiss timepieces are expensively made; but some are actually quite reasonable. We're still hovering around that four-figure plimsoll line, but brands like Junghans, Oris, Ferrari, Swiss Military, Xylus, and TAG Heuer all make dependable everyday wearers with sapphire-crystal domes, Swiss-made precision mechanics, and water-resistant steel cases that are mounted on slender bracelets made of calfskin or high-tech rubber. Always covered by a guarantee, always reparable, and just as "Swiss" and "Made" as any pricey Piaget or Vacheron Constantin.
IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE A PIECE OF JEWELLERY TO BE THE BEST & EXPENSIVE
Despite being an admittedly old myth, the gem element continues to appear in the literature of many Brands as a shining achievement. Today's rubies are synthetically made, and while they do an important job of reducing friction at pivot points, they are no longer a symbol of quality or value because the anachronistic wonder of their surrounding mechanics has taken their place.
“SWISS MADE” MEANS COMPLETELY MADE IN SWITZERLAND
A government rule states that in order to print "Swiss Made" on your dial, you must have obtained at least 60% of the value of your watch from Switzerland during the manufacturing process. Many believe it should be more, and in most cases it is. However, even if an occasional crystal, dial, leather strap, or screw originates in East Asia, it's likely that this is due to better pricing rather than worse quality, and the savings are always passed on to you.
SMART WATCH MARKET IS KILLING THE LUXURY WATCH MARKET
Apple smartwatches are posing a threat to the Swiss Watch segment owing to their build and mechanism. But a few updates are all that’s going to take to re-convert the recent defectors to a lifetime’s proper watch. The devastation caused by the quartz crisis also means Switzerland is in no mood to take a nap again. Brands like Montblanc and TAG Heuer are at the forefront of smartwatch technology with their own innovations.
QUARTZ IS NOT AS CLASSY AS MECHANICAL
Quartz-controlled technology has always been a painful nerve for COGS supporters. No wonder, the traditional Swiss watchmaking industry was almost wiped out. Yet, collars truly do appear to be released finally. In the beginning, quartz is the real horological progression of the twentieth century, as anything else that has come up has just refreshed eighteenth-century mechanical ideologies. Moreover, when you consider that horology is the quest for "keeping time", quartz does it best in its own compact form. Likewise, with the ascent of the associated smartwatch, considered by some to be a potential "second quartz emergency", the watch with a heart of crystal is currently getting rejuvenated, 50 years on from Seiko revealing its Astron on Christmas Day in 1969. So, pick up the case study of any quartz watch and you will be stunned by the view of a sophisticated legacy backed by innovation and skill.

Why does DC fandom, especially Batfam fandom, have so many fanworks about the Batboys as “harem boys”? Do these mostly White American female fans realise the cultural history of the harem? The harem was about seclusion and discrimination, about sexual slavery, paedophilia, and literally cutting off male genitalia; so these women, girls, and, boys would not even entertain a wild thought about escaping into society. That it is about the ugliness of absolute power and NOT a place for *sensual* pleasures. Why are Eastern ways of life that might have once been a part of our landscape - in an era of kings and tight social hierarchies and rigid class systems - so appealing to Westerners? And these aren’t exactly medieval practices either. Modern sexual slavery and child sexual trafficking is just as rampant - just look at the increasing numbers of kidnapped and missing children around the world, of parents selling off their own children to stave off hunger and death, of modern extremist outfits minting money from trafficking impacted children in any of the global terrorist hotspots.
Eg: (1) think of boys and girls in Yemen and Afghanistan, of the Kurds, Yazidis, Pashtun, and Nepalis who are trafficked in millions, (2) Batfam fandom sets these harem stories with League of Assassins which are comics-verse stand ins to these real geographical regions; and (3) most such fics focus on Dick Grayson - the canonical half-Romani character. The Romani were driven out of the plains and deserts of north-west India by Muslim invaders from Central Asia and Arabian Peninsula who sought to rape, pillage, and convert. While some fled to other parts of India, many fled north-west across current day Pakistan to Turkey & Egypt onwards to Europe to more persecutions, including the Holocaust.
So why this fandom obsession? Why this ridiculous distance from real world issues around these subjects? I grew up in a tiny backwards mining town and there were stories of little boys stolen from the *bastis* around town. Kids playing alone while both parents went to work in the mines at dawn. They come back home at sundown to a child missing. Sometimes, the boys would show up in a few years, decked out in jewellery and make up and good clothes bringing some money for their parents in exchange for having their genitals cut off long ago so they could be performing beggars. There is NOTHING sensual about committing such violations on a human body. Even if it is a fictional character you don’t like. Can we have some real effing empathy in this fandom?
Or perhaps a little history? Sexual slavery centered around the performing arts is a common thread across so many Asian cultures. There is nothing romantic or sensual about sexual slavery and paedophilia. FFS!!!

Image of the Jina Rishabha, 9th century, Brooklyn Museum: Asian Art
From Accession Card Brass image (murti) of a Jina, seated in padmasana pose on a lotus pedestal (padmapitha) and resting against a lion throne (simhasana) supported by lions and 2 makara heads. The figure and pedestal are on a rectangular base (bhadrapitha) supported by 6 short legs. The Jina is entirely nude, indicating that he belongs to the Digambara sect. His hair is spirally curled with long ringlets falling from the back of the head to the shoulders and he has pendent earlobes. He holds his hands in the yoga mudra (pose of meditation). Behind the figure is a large foliated screen back (torana) supported by 2 columns. There are 4 other diminutive Jinas seated in padmasana poses, grouped around the image in the center. 2 are placed against the column and the other 2 are on the torana, one on either side of a 3-tiered canopy (chattra) from which hangs long pendent leaves. Seated behind the figure of the large Jina, on the floor of the pedestal, are 2 small male and female figures (to be re-identified). At the right and left of the Jina, leaning against the sirascakra at the back of his head, are 2 standing figures of attendants in tribhanga pose carrying flywhisks, crowned, and wearing short dhotis and the usual jewellery. Small figures of Dharanenda and Padmavati (also to be re-identified?) are also placed against the 2 front legs of the base. One of the legs of the pedestal is missing. The surface of the brass is patinated, and on the back there are traces of earth incrustation. --- Tradition: Jain Sect: Digambara Size: 9 1/4 × 4 1/2 × 2 3/4 in. (23.5 × 11.4 × 7 cm) Medium: Bronze

What’s up with paisley?
The paisley pattern has a surprising history, as it was inspired by the oldest religion in the world. The paisley pattern is made up of buta, an almond or pine cone-shaped motif in ornament with a sharp-curved upper end. The motif originated from Persia and is common in Turkey, India, Azerbaijan, and other Central Asian countries. The buta seems to resemble a stylized floral spray, fused with a cypress tree: a Zoroastrian symbol of life and eternity. The "bent" cedar is also a sign of strength and resistance but modesty, which was valued in Zoroastrianism.
Some Americans call the pattern “Persian pickles” while the Welsh may refer to them as “Welsh pears”. After spreading to Europe, the Scottish town of Paisley quickly became a major center for its manufacturing. As usual, a piece of Asian culture was appropriated and hijacked by Europeans.
The symbol is popular in jewellery and carpets but is also used in clothing. Men’s ties are a common piece of clothing that sport the design. In the Safavid, Qajar, and Pahlavi dynasties of the 1500s to the 1700s, the pattern was used to decorate the royal regalia, crowns, and court garments, as well as textiles used by the general population. The weavers in the town of Paisley, Scotland produced a very trendy paisley shawl for women, which was popular in the 1800s.
The psychedelic nature of the design made it popular amongst hippies, and the pattern was made mainstream thanks in part to The Beatles in the 1960s. After being iconized in rock & roll history, Prince paid tribute to the design and even had a song called “Paisley Park” in 1985. Will Smith famously wore his school uniform jacket inside out in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the early 90s, revealing a paisley-pattern that truly made him stand out.

Day 23
Mon 27th Jan
Started off with Spanish omelettes again, once the manager sorry I mean chef, had gone to buy an avocado that is. Then we then went to the Women’s Center for Take 2 of the walking tour.
I’d mentioned the night before to Esther that our bags were slightly over packed and Esther had kindly agreed to take a couple of items we didn’t want to carry with us back to London - so I’d got a little (!) glasto canvas bag that we’d bought with us and filled it with bits and bobs that we haven’t been using. Would hopefully make our bags much easier to pack and a little lighter 😬
Was rather thrilled to have this opportunity to send stuff back, even packed a few metal water bottles we’ve been carrying around - they just haven’t been that useful as there’s nowhere to get drinking water from to refill them!
Yes, that means that we’ve been buying far too many plastic bottles which I do not feel good about.
I hoped she wouldn’t be shocked by how much I’d prepped.
So we got to the Women’s Center and Esther met us there and was totally fine with the bag I’d bought (phew!) or at least she did a sterling job pretending to be fine with it, and so we even bought a couple more items in the craft shop to squeeze in there too. I mean, couldn’t miss an opportunity like that could I. Mad to think it will be in London within 24 hours.
The women’s tour started and was just the 3 of us, with no rain - we were so glad we’d postponed it. They told us about two Slovenian women who’d found out about the original group of women who would meet us, and they did some fundraising in Slovenia. With their advice and financial support, it has blossomed into an amazing cooperative of 55 women that help the community, do workshops and education for women, do walking tours and have set up a library and all sorts.
We walked around the community and met different business owners, the milk shop, butchers, coal seller, vegetables shop - Esther even had a braid added to her head.
We ended the tour at someone’s house - Josephine - and there was a DELICIOUS selection of 7 vegetarian dishes awaiting us for our lunch. Oh my god we were so happy, we both had two MASSIVE platefuls and could barely walk afterwards. It was probably the best meal we’d had since we started the trip. There I’ve said it.
We said Bye to Esther, thanking her again for kindly taking our stuff for us, and headed to the bus station to research tickets back to Uganda for the next day.
At the bus station, we looked for Modern Coast buses company, as Philly Tours Atol Protected © had been a good lad and done some research into who did a morning bus all the way to Kampala, Uganda. However the unfriendly lady at the desk informed us that there was ‪a 5pm‬ or ‪7pm‬ option and that was it. Minus points for Phil’s Tours there I think.
We really didn't want to get a night bus so said no thanks. We were confident we would be able to work out a different option.
But another guy who worked there spoke to us and said that there were NO companies that went in the morning anymore. He even said ‘In the name of the Lord’ there were no other companies that did it.
That's when we knew he was definitely lying.
We explained that we would explore other options thank you bye now and he was like Do you think I'm lying, I'm not lying.
And we said No, of course we didn’t, but we were going to explore other options.
Naturally, he followed us out (!) - what is with that - and walked with us as we headed to speak to other companies. And then all of sudden he had a brain wave of inspiration, wow it was miraculous.
'Oh so hang on, maybe try Jaguar company'.
What's that mate? Suddenly remembered that you were definitely lying?
We went to the Jaguar office and there was a bus ‪at 8:30am‬ the next morning.
IN YOUR FACE PRICK.
Then the man who'd walked over with us wanted a tip!
I’ve got a tip for you matey, don’t chat shite and you might get a tip.
We laughed at him and told him he should not lie to people - but eventually gave him 10p just to go away. I know I KNOW thats stupid but it was just one of those things done to keep the peace.
So the lesson learnt is, anyone who says I swear in God's name appears to be a liar.
I'm no expert but I don't think God's gona be too happy about that.
We got bodas back to the hostel but went for a little wander to the shops nearby and to explore the local area. There was a cute little jewellery shop and Phil managed to find some beer to keep him hydrated. What a hero.
We took a shortcut through some local houses, Phil slipping in the process = highlight of the day - but we couldn't find Yego art studio as they'd apparently moved (Google is not always right). Then Inzora rooftop was hot and small so we didn’t stay there, then we went next door to a nice place with a good view but realised that we really didn't want to eat or drink anything. So we awkwardly got up to leave and I said as an excuse Phil had ‘forgotten his wallet’ but then he said at the same time he'd ‘forgotten his TISSUES’ (the afternoons beers had definitely started to work their magic), and so the waitress looked at us like we were weirdos and we swiftly left. We got bodas back to the hostel and I chilled on the balcony but Phil had the taste for it now, the dreaded flavour, so he decided he wanted to go bowling on his own with his speaker and some more beers.
Oh gad we were in danger zone.
After an hour or so, Phil had enough of the bowling but was waist deep in Santan Dave's album Phsyco and had convinced himself he too was a rapper from Streatham going through some tough times, so it was tricky trying to convince him that we still needed to go for dinner.
I was excited to try this place for dinner that had been recommended by Esther and a few other ppl too - Heaven.
Phil however, was excited to close his eyes and bond with his brother from another mother Dave.
Well, after a slight verbal tug of war, we managed to get to Heaven (woop woop) and the moment we sat down Phil said ‘God I'm so hungry, I’m glad we came out for dinner’. FML.
We both had a tasty mint lemonade, I think even Phil realised another beer might be a bad idea. The mushroom cappuccino soup was served in a tall coffee glass but with a massive spoon, so Phil had a slightly awkward time accessing it. His hunger took over though and he got through it. My Thai Asian salad was delicious too.
So we had high hopes for the mains.
Well, in hindsight I think we ordered the wrong mains.
Phil's sesame eggplant dish was uninspiring and my ravoili was a fishy slop.
Oh maaaaaan.
Just to kick a man when he's down, Phil found a super hot chilli somewhere in his last mouthful and spent the next 10 minutes with his tongue out trying to fan it and make the pain stop. At one point he was rubbing his tongue with his napkin lol.
The brownie dessert was nice enough but it was a shame we hadn't enjoyed the mains when it was a bit of a posh meal.
Phil’s earlier beers were still in effect and as we left, he looked at the waitress as I walked off to use the loo and said
‘She’s just going for a quick plop’
OMG Phil! I made sure I pee’ed fast so we could get the hell out of there while Phil laughed his head off.
We boda'd back and the food was kicking in sending Phil to snoozeville, so straight to bed - foolishly not packing beforehand.

Style? It’s right on the nose - fashion and trends
Tumblr media
There’s a fashion revolution underway, and it’s centered on the nose pin. Gone are the traditional whorls and signets. In their place are dancing peacocks, Aztec motifs, rainbow colours and Hindi slang. The pieces are designed — and bought — to be worn with jeans or a kurti as easily as with formal ethnic wear.“Social media and fashion influencers are helping us see the richness of our own ethnicity. Nose pins coming back are a part of that trend,” says jewellery designer Monalisa Manna.

A bindi-inspired nosepin by Lai designs. Go freestylePuja Bhargava Kamath of Lai Designs says there are now essentially three types of nose pins and rings — contemporary pieces meant for everyday wear, which some women change as regularly as they do earrings; larger, statement pieces, meant for special days or outfits or moods; and traditional classic Indian pins.“I would say they all do well. And I think part of the reason is that urban women no longer feel bound to subscribe to any one stereotype of what should be worn, or what should be worn with what,” Kamath says. “So they’re wearing our small silver bird nose pin with shirtdresses or cropped linen pants.”We evolve with time and so does fashion, says Saika Roy Choudhury, 34, a media sales executive. “I started wearing nose pins when I was 21. From simple diamond and gold studs, my collection has become more eclectic. I love experimenting. I’m happy to wear an elaborate Maharashtrian nath with an Indo-western outfit and make it my statement accessory for the day.” Sport the trend but rememberStick with gold or silver. These metals have the least chances of giving you an infection.Septum rings are in; birds are in too. But before getting pierced, try faux ones to see whether you want to make it permanent. Most nose rings tend to be designed for the left and can’t be worn on the right of the nose, but you can get quirky right-side designs on websites like aadyaa.com and shyle.in.Origin talesA return to roots informs a lot of nose pin design today. Designer Bhavya Ramesh, for instance, travelled through Karnataka and Gujarat over seven months, drawing inspiration from the jewellery of Banjara tribals.“People today want to connect with a product and want designs to represent them in some way,” she says. “So I took the bold structures from a lot of the tribal jewellery I came across and added, for instance, ghungroo that move, a technique I learnt from the tribals.”Pragya Batra of Quirksmith, based in Bengaluru, is making collectible septum rings and says they’re catching on because they’re more gender-neutral.

And growing demand for faux septum rings and nose pins suggests people new to noserings are experimenting with them,” she adds. Her biggest sellers: Septum rings with typographic motifs that say ‘Aham’ (Sanksrit for ‘I am’) and ‘Maal’.Though traditionally women wore gold nose pins, now silver pieces are faster-moving. “Perhaps that’s because women are collecting them, and the price of silver works better with that model,” says Vinayak Barwani, owner of Asian Arts in Kolkata, which has sold silver jewellery since 1956.Follow more stories on Facebook and Twitter Source link Read the full article
