50 questions for fic readers, answering @chromatic-lamina
14) What makes you give up on reading a fic?
Hard not to make a cliché reply about that because the writing and the themes mainly. Or the way the author is handling things, using tropes, writing in character... I haven’t dropped fics recently, mostly because I’m really picky and, while on AO3, some tags are so specific that they’re almost always the assurance of a good read. When authors knows what they’re writing about (themes, canon, relationships...) and are sensitive about the way they write it, it can’t be a bad fic.
16) Name a fic that made you cry (or that made you come close).
You already know Repossession did, because of the way you write loss and remembrance and well Ace. But à brûle pourpoint... I can’t pick a precise one. Depending on the themes, I cry so much reading books that I have trouble remembering when fanfictions made me an equally emotional mess.
So, last time I’ve cried while reading was because of En Apnée (The Deepest Breath by Meg Grehan). It’s the story of a 11 years old, living with her single mom and understanding she loves girls. And more than the coming out to oneself and looking for answers part, the way the single-parenting was described and how Maxime (Stevie in English) felt about it, it really hit me hard. I’ve never read such a truer retelling of how a part of my childhood felt, without knowing that was how I felt at the time. And I cried so hard and so many times. Just like The Little Prince (Saint-Exupéry), for which I wished someone had made me read it while still a child to see if I would’ve been moved the same way by grief yet again or not.
17) Name a fic that made you laugh a lot.
Same with laughter, I have good humour and can laugh a lot so it’s rare a work makes a lasting impression on me with that alone. But, I went through my favs and... I can list some :
In French : Huile ou beurre ? (Oil or butter?) by Gyapple. Sanji struggling to choose what to use to make crêpes and Zoro being reluctantly of help. Their bickering and their moniker game are really on point.
In French : Moi je fais la vaisselle (I do the dishes) by Aliocha. About Sanji singing while doing the dishes and Zoro crashing his party. It’s hard to explain why it’s fun but it stems from the song. Moi je fais la vaisselle is a parody of another song, J’ai encoré rêvé d’elle (I dreamed of her again).
The last French one : Nom de code : Beurre Salé (Codename: Salted Butter) by AlCh95. Not a fanfic. X-Files but make it celtic. The author really nailed the hard-boiled mystic detective atmosphere with lot of fun and jokes while pretty still heavy with action. It’s a one-shot but I really really wish there was more, and new weird cases.
Cerasite by Imperial Mint. Thach and Izo in a Coffee shop AU where Thatch hates his manager and has found a hilarious way to get him fired.
Talking about hard-boiled detectives, Private Eyes by Aerle. Shanks narrating everything out loud always gets me.
For SEAL Team : The Swear Jar  (pretty transparent on the plot) and The Great Escape (or lack thereof), funny team bonding through not-so-casual escape game.
Last but not least : whatever you can still betray by midnightluck. Haruta testing (investigating) Ace’s backstory and his contradictions. Haruta is beyond awesome and paranoid.
“Ace isn’t a spy, yoi.” “That’s exactly what he wants you to think!”
Oh and just two more, a book and a manga this time, because somehow, the authors just nailed that way of using humor before punching you in the gut with “social truths”.
Let’s talk about love by Claire Kann. There’s something really fresh and actual in the writing. Kinda Millennial I might say? Young Adult definitely. The summary gives a pretty good idea of the whole tone of the story but it’s still a story about break-up and acceptance and asexual folks struggling. And it’s own voices so it hurts and heals at the same time.
I’m currently rereading Aromantic (Love) Story (French title for Kiryu sensei wa renai ga wakaranai) by Haruka Ono. Futaba, a 32 years old mangaka interested in drawing about social issues, is writing a successful shonen harem... But she genuinely doesn’t understand love and is questioning her possible queerness. Until one of her assistants and a scenarist adapting her manga in anime start hitting on her. The drawing is... I love it. It’s pretty round and expressive and Futaba is hilarious, she has a wild imagination and the way it’s portrayed, drawn... I laugh a lot, the situations are funny and at the same times, we see her struggles to understand what love is and she openly questions women’s role in society, all the misconceptions and sexism... Her indignation is great.
Side note: Now that I think about it, maybe the fact that I can’t really name fanfictions that made me cry or laugh without looking for them is because, unlike the books I read, I’ve precisely chosen my fanfics (through tags and filters) and know what I will get out of them (even if just an outline of the story).
35) Name all the Work in Progress fics that you are currently reading.
Too Many. If it’s good and a WIP I’ll follow until it’s completed, no matter if each update takes days or months or years. That’s the benefit of fanfictions, granted you’re a wide reader: you don’t really feel the wait because there’s just so many available !
There’s probably too many French in this. Blame my first day back to work since the lockdown. I really missed my sweet little school library!

SAKURA ISHI
Cherry blossom stones-

As someone who is ND themself and who has friends with “bad” ND disorders, I’m gonna ask neurotypical people to do a few things.
STOP DEMONIZING NEURODIVERGENT DISORDERS LIKE DID, BPD, BD, PSYCHOSIS, ASPD, ETC.
These people are NOT monsters, they are NOT your experiments to test on, they are NOT your hobby. They are living breathing people trying to live the best they can in a neurotypical focused world.
What bothers me the most is that these people are struggling, and then they don’t feel like they can reach out for help because the minute they do, they get demonized for it.
Another thing neurotypical people need to stop doing,
STOP INFANTILIZING PEOPLE WITH ADHD AND AUTISM. We are NOT infants. We are NOT incapable. We are NOT your “soft little baby.” Or some other bullshit.
We too, are people, we are also struggling, but treating us as if we’re incapable of doing anything when we very well could be is beyond insulting.
Neurodivergent people are just that, PEOPLE. Stop treating us otherwise. We just want respect.
Seriously.
