Charlie's close friends (none other than Sam and Dean) go to check up on the reader due to Charlie becoming worried for him/her. "You were talking to him on the phone while I was in the shower, weren't you?" Sam asked.

"Maybe.." You replied with a slight grimace.

Sam's well known puppy-dog look almost drew you in.

"You didn't have to lie to me (Y/n), it's alright."

You shrugged, not really wanting to get into detail about your doubts.

Thankfully, no one seemed to press on, so you all ate in silence. It wasn't awkward, yet there was still some tension felt in the air. Maybe they were too worn out from the drive to insist anything too greatly. You didn't really know, but you accepted it with open arms.

It was only a few moments later that you completely licked your entire foam plate clean. You hadn't had a decent meal like this in what seemed like forever, and you couldn't have been more grateful. You looked up to the boys' mirroring surprise.

"You gonna eat the plate too?" Dean chuckled.

You quickly pulled your tongue back in and turned a deep shade of red. "No.."

"We can get you something else if you're really that hungry, do you want anything?" Sam asked.

You were about to say no when your stomach grumbled in protest; as if you didn't feel like a burden enough.

"That just means I'm digesting, I'm good." You lied, again.

Sam looked at you in disbelief. "Are you sure, (Y/N)?"

You nodded before you had a chance to change your mind. "Yeah. Hey, are we doing more research on the case? Or are we going to check out the vics first?"

The brothers luckily took the bait. "We'll check them out first, just to give us some more concrete evidence on what we're dealing with. Gotta be thorough." Dean replied with a wink; his mouth stuffed with the last of a burger.

That was odd, Dean always seemed to jump to conclusions... At least from what you read. Maybe the books were different after all.

"I'll call the coroner to see if they'll take us earlier." Sam said, whipping out his phone.

"And if we can't get ahold of them," Dean made his way over to his duffle bag. "we'll head to the victims' loved ones, since we're headed there eventually."

Out of the large aged duffle came a suit neatly folded in plastic, which Dean seemed to be a little too cautious with (at least compared to his own clothes). He also pulled out a long navy tie for himself, along with a snazzy pair of shoes; which were still in a cardboard box. It then clicked that he and Sam rented their suits, and did not possess enough money to own one. Then it dawned you, that neither did you.

How had you not thought of attire for the case? Oh yeah, flashbacks. You shook your head to clear the memories that threatened to take control once again, and pondered deeply for a solution. There had to be something in your suitcase, right?

You instantly bolted to your luggage and dug for anything remotely businessesque. You were disappointed to remember that you left a lot of your clothes back at the dorm, figuring that traveling light would be best. But you didn't think you were going hunting with the Winchesters, so you didn't think to pack hunting essentials almost a year ago. After digging for a few minutes, you came across one of your dress shirts and a decent pair of slacks.

"Dean?" You asked a little timidly.

"Yeah?"

"Would this pass for an FBI agent?" You asked, holding up your outfit.

He paused from laying his suit out on the bed and gave your outfit a quick once-over.

"I think we could pass you as an agent-in-training at least." He remarked.

Sam walked over between you and Dean, explaining that the coroner would take you all within the next hour. Surprisingly, you weren't as far as you thought, as the three of you were situated on the outskirts of the city where the incidents all occurred; Kokomo, Indiana. With an acceptable amount of traffic on the road, it would take around forty minutes to an hour to get to the coroner's office.

"We better head out in a few then, if we want to get there in time." Dean replied.

Sam nodded. "You have something to wear (Y/N)?"

You held up the outfit Dean approved of, causing Sam to bite the inside of his cheek.

"We can always say she is an agent in training." Dean reassured.

"True.." Sam looked at the outfit once more and nodded. "Yeah, we can make it work. Alright, let's get going."

It wasn't until you got in the car that you knew it would be a long day. Your stomach began to rumble noisily again, but it was luckily unheard by everyone but yourself. You just hoped you could hold off at least until supper that evening.

You used water to tide off your hunger curb on the fifty minute drive to the Howard County Coroner Office, figuring that the sight of corpses would only decrease your appetite anyway.

"You ready?" Sam asked as you stepped out of the back seat.

You nodded with a gulp, knowing there certainly would be no turning back after seeing those haunted mangled bodies. Dean gave you a wary look, but you pushed him off mentally with an assuring nod. Although, you couldn't help but look back from the office steps at the world as you knew it.

"Agents, glad you could come earlier!" A stocky balding man beamed, in front of a small receptionist's desk.

"I'm glad you allowed us to, Mr. Seele." Sam replied.

"Is (he/she) a friend of yours?" Mr. Seele inquired.

"Oh, yeah. This is (Mr/Ms) Blaise, (he/she)'s our newest agent in training." Dean said.

Mr. Seele smiled warmly. "Well welcome to you too (Mr/Ms) Blaise!"

"Thank you." You replied as professionally as you possibly could.

He nodded in response. "Well boys, let's get right to it; I have a couple other clients to attend to this afternoon."

"No problem sir, it shouldn't take long." Sam commented.

The three of you were led down a slightly musty corridor. The room you were about to enter was a couple doors down on the right hand side, considering that this was the sole room to have extremely bright fluorescent lights. The boys looked at you one last time before they stepped into the room first. As another reassurance to yourself and to them, you curtly nodded.

The strong smell of chemicals watered your eyes as soon as you stepped foot into the room; the faint smell of multiple different bodily fluids and decomposition only made your stomach turn worse. How could someone even work in a place like this on a daily basis? You tried to focus on some more pleasant situations as the Head Coroner and the brothers discussed the bodies.

"I would definitely call this an animal attack, a weird one if that." Mr. Seele inferred, "You'll see what I mean once I show you the bodies."

Here we go. You tried to prepare yourself for the worst as he slid out seven bodies from their storage compartments; you weren't nearly as prepared. Bile burned the back of your throat as you slowly inched closer to the boys and the stiff shells of life that lay before you. They would have looked as if they were asleep if it were not for the large gaping holes in their chests.

"Do you have their reports on file, doctor?" Sam asked.

"We certainly do." He replied, pulling the coordinating files from multiple clipboards on a long table.

The names of the victims were Brayden Cole, Theodore Cromwell, Zachary Gort, James Page, Wanton Meers, Thomas Gartner, and Kelly Marx; as if that mattered anymore. They were lives of the past, that were currently who knows where. The only thing they all seemed to have in common thus far was the garish chest wound on each of their bodies. They weren't all the same gender nor same race, but of course, that wouldn't matter to a werewolf.

"I would have to agree with you doc, on the animal attack, but we'll still dig deeper anyway. We'll take it from here." Dean said.

"Alright. Just be sure close the door behind you!" The coroner responded.

"I would definitely say a wolf is what we're dealing with, the victims seem to have no relation to one another." Sam concluded as he flipped through the various reports.

You swallowed audibly. "It does look messy enough." You added.

"Now we just gotta find the culprit." Dean said, striding out the door to the morgue.

You were hasty to follow.

You greeted the fresh air as if you would've never been outside from that moment on, at least for the rest of the day. It made you wonder if this lifestyle was really for you.

"How are you, kiddo?" Dean asked once you all were outside of the building.

"Um... I mean, I'm hanging in there for now, if that's what you're asking." You falsified.

"Good, because we still have a couple more people to interview, if you're up to it."

You sighed in relief for the distraction. "As long as I don't see more bodies f-"

It was literal word vomit. Contents likely from this afternoon spewed from your mouth onto the concrete steps and you choked. Your head spun, causing you to cling to the railing desperately. Several hands were placed on your back, but your head swam too much to tell who they specifically belonged to.

"Easy, easy!" Dean exclaimed.

Shivers traveled through your body as you finally finished emptying your stomach. You were sure that you would have lost it in the morgue, not around ten minutes later. You suddenly felt better but worse at the same time. So much for playing it cool.

"What the hell." You mumbled.

"(Y/N), hey, you okay?" Sam asked with a frown.

You cleared your throat and spit the remaining bile out from your mouth. "I think so." You answered truthfully.

Sam and Dean sat you down away from the vomit and comforted you for a moment more.

"Do you have any reason that my body decided to wait to freak out over a dead body?" You asked.

"Shock maybe?" Dean replied.

You lightly nodded, considering that they had their fair share of dead bodies to observe and deal with over the years.

"You good to go back to the car? Or are you going to spill your guts all over my leather seats?" He asked, arching an eyebrow.

"Yeah, I'm good." You knew the remaining nausea had to be from the lack of food in your system.

How Often Does Accounting Rules Change?

Accounting has always been a fluid profession. For this reason, I prefer to call it more of an art than an exact science. Just this Wednesday, the Internal Revenue Service plans to apply new rules on the withholding of individual wages. This announcement is part of a series of updates that the regulatory body has released since the passing of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

We can also expect changes in how we use the Form W-4. The IRS no long requires existing employees to resubmit the form for basic changes in their information. You can learn more about these changes with this article Sally Schreiber on the Journal of Accountancy last 13th of February 2020.

IRS Proposes Rules To Update Income Tax Withholding, Revises Form W-4

The IRS proposed new regulations (REG-132741-17) for withholding on individuals’ wages to reflect the statutory changes in the law known as the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, P.L. 115-97, including the elimination of the personal exemption. The proposed rules and the new Form W-4, Employee’s Withholding Certificate (formerly titled Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate) no longer use an employee’s marital status and withholding allowances, which were tied to the value of the personal exemption. 

According to the IRS, income tax withholding using the redesigned Form W-4 will generally be based on the employee’s expected filing status (married, single, or head of household) and standard deduction for the year. Click here to read more…

Seeking Tech Talent, Companies Kickstart Apprenticeship Programs

Companies challenged by the shortage of skilled technology staff are using an old-fashioned method—the apprenticeship—to recruit nontraditional workers for entry-level roles.

The applicants, many with just a high-school education, are getting months of training in digital skills, including programming languages such as C++, building a pathway to more challenging roles and higher salaries.

“The rapid change seen particularly in high-tech presents a challenge for education to adapt quickly enough. Industry cannot wait and is forced to take additional steps,” said

senior vice president of human resources for North America at Robert Bosch GmbH. The Germany-based engineering company and auto-parts supplier is focusing on developing its electric and autonomous car technologies.

As soon as this quarter, Bosch’s North American unit, based in Farmington Hills, Mich., plans to kick off a 12-month tech apprenticeship program to train applicants to write code that supports emerging technologies such as driver assistance and autonomous vehicles.

Bosch has included technology training in its German apprenticeships since 2015.

While the four-year college degree remains a top indicator for gauging success, it isn’t the only one, especially as need outpaces supply.

Recruiting tech talent was a challenge for about 80% of roughly 2,800 U.S. employers surveyed in 2019 by

Robert Half International Inc.

The number of software-developer jobs is expected to grow 21% between 2018 and 2028, faster than the 5% average of all occupations, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“CIOs are concerned because they are competing with the likes of the big tech companies for the same talent,” said

James Atkinson,

vice president of quantitative analytics and data science at Gartner Inc.’s human resources research and advisory practice.

Bosch plans to train 16 apprentices in fundamentals such as system architecture, design and coding in the C++ programming language, which is useful in engine management and braking systems. They will also spend a minimum of 128 hours training in soft skills, including communication, presentations, collaboration and project management. Applicants must have a high-school diploma.

The first cohort will account for about 5% of the 342 software engineers the company plans to hire this year. Eventually, Bosch expects the apprentice program to grow to 20% to 25% of annual software-engineer hires.

“We have to get over some mental paradigms that we have about recruiting and the standards that we have,” said Mr. Ackerman, adding that he had to convince division engineering heads of the benefits of bringing in software engineers without college degrees. Technical experts at Bosch will serve as mentors to the apprentices.

Bosch is registering the apprenticeship program with the U.S. Department of Labor, which has set standards for levels of classroom training, job supervision and other metrics specific to a job.

The U.S. wants to replicate Germany’s well-known apprenticeship program. The effort comes as Germany itself is struggling to find enough apprentices because young people make up a dwindling portion of the population and many of them are interested in college.

Besides teaching technology skills, some companies are using apprenticeships as an opportunity to diversify their workforce.

Barclays

PLC has taken on more than 100 tech apprentices in the U.S. since it started a program in 2013 to fill technology roles in areas including software and storage administration.

“The apprentice program helps us hire people from the local community who would not necessarily get this opportunity because they’ve been disadvantaged in terms of getting the education on their résumé to even qualify to apply through traditional methods,” said

Brian Dolan,

managing director for client-facing technology at Barclays Investment Bank, the investment-banking arm.

Barclays places apprentices in locations including New York City. Applicants don’t need a college degree.

An apprentice who joined recently was trained on Linux and analytics software Splunk. Apprentices take online courses and shadow managers as part of the learning process.

Since International Business Machines Corp. started its apprenticeship program in 2017, it has hired applicants including a nurse, a police officer and a nail technician. Applicants need to have a high-school diploma or GED.

The company has hired about 500 apprentices so far and plans to hire more than 450 of them this year, said

Obed Louissaint,

vice president of talent at

IBM.

The program provides on-the-job training for more than 20 roles, including administration of mainframes, which companies and U.S. states are still using to run legacy applications.

“At the core of building our neural networks and algorithms you may not have an apprentice, but that doesn’t mean that on the testing or support side you couldn’t,” Mr. Louissaint said.

The 2019 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) came out not long ago. There are a lot of incremental change in the 78 pages of charts and graphs, which is normal for a report of this kind. The DBIR isn’t rocking anyone’s boat with blockbuster findings; instead, it reveals trends that may or may not be comforting. Overall the report serves as a useful barometer of the state of data protection, as a reminder that things are not good in the world of cybersecurity, and that we who make the tools enterprises rely on to protect their data should strive to do better by them.

Fact is, innovation in cybersecurity has fallen behind innovation by the global hacker community. While global spending on security has, according to Gartner, exceeded $124B, hackers have not been idle. They’ve adopted methods that allow them to overwhelm traditional security tools and take advantage of plain old human frailty. As long as our species remains predisposed to click on interesting emails, rely on easy (or no) passwords, or browse to places we shouldn’t, the hackers will have the edge. Unless, that is, we come up with radically different approaches to security that are clever enough to take into account our collective weaknesses. In the meantime data breaches continue apace, with thousands of incidents reported in 2018 resulting in around 5 billion sensitive records compromised.

It’s a simple matter of mathematics and scale. Hackers have started using offensive AI to generate and deliver unique malware at a rate of four new samples per second. Cheap and abundant compute, as well as a profusion of toolkits in the wild, have actually made it easy to develop highly resilient and evasive “designer threats” that can target a specific enterprise.  For example at the 2018 BlackHat IBM Research introduced DeepLocker, a toolkit to deliver highly obfuscated and evasive malware. This class of AI-powered evasive malware conceals its intent until it reaches a specific victim.

While DeepLocker was an academic experiment, today it is possible for anyone to buy a tailor-made virus that is guaranteed to get past the top 10 to 15 major security solutions the first time it is deployed. Such attacks are sometimes augmented by an AI algorithm that can add to the stealthiness of the malware, depending on the environment and attempts made to discover it. AI raises the stakes, with an advantage for the attackers.  They need to get it right only once to score while defenders need to defend successfully 24/7/365.

When an attack is successful in getting by perimeter defenses, according to Figure 28 of the DBIR, the typical time to compromise is measured in minutes. From there it only takes a few hours for a hacker to move laterally to their target and exfiltrate valuable data. Compare that to the time it takes for an enterprise to discover it has been breached, which is measured in months and then, once a breach is discovered, the days or weeks it takes to contain the breach. If that doesn’t give you pause, you aren’t paying attention.

The message for the enterprise is simple: in today’s threat environment, speed kills. Any failure to keep pace with the threat is an exacerbating factor, but we’ve settled into a pattern of relying on incremental improvement in existing security tech. It’s not good enough. The scale and speed of today’s attacker onslaught is more than enough to overwhelm traditional approaches to security, and, as security researcher Richard Seiersen states in this LinkedIn post, “A 99 percent success rate equates to a 100 percent failure rate” when you rely on signature- and sandbox-based security.

How do we—indeed, can we—slow down the pace of the threat actors? Maybe that’s the wrong question. Instead we should be thinking in terms of increasing the speed of our ability to detect and prevent threats.

The first step involves recognizing and understanding the source of the biggest external threats and focusing attention there. According to the DBIR, email (94%) and the web (23%) are the primary means of threat delivery (the overlap of those two figures accounts for cases where initial compromise is made via email and the victim is directed to a web page where the payload may be completed). Establishing a smarter, faster perimeter defense becomes the key to prevention.

We believe that, where human intelligence often lets us down, artificial intelligence can close the security gap. And not garden-variety AI, which has been used for years in cybersecurity with less than stellar results, but with deep learning, the most sophisticated subfield of machine learning. The application of deep learning to the challenges presented by hackers has shown excellent results in its ability to detect and prevent threats from getting through the gate no matter how amorphous your perimeter may be. Thus far we’ve demonstrated nearly 100% detection rates against daily threat samples, including zero-day variants, and automatically deliver threat detection verdicts in less than a second, stopping threats cold.

That’s faster than Gladys at the front desk can click a link promising a cute new cat video. In fact, she’ll never even see that email. And neither will Charlie in sales who is eager to please everyone who reaches out to him in hopes of getting closer to his next big deal. Speed kills in security, where humans never seem to learn from our mistakes, but faster saves. And deep learning can act before we have a chance to make the same mistakes (again).

Asset-Backed Securities: Entering the Crypto Conversation in 2019

The following is an exclusive contribution to CoinDesk’s 2018 Year in Review. 

We are at the end of another busy autumn conference season, and I have had the opportunity to speak at half a dozen events to focus on the intersection of capital markets and distributed ledger technology.

As we wind down for the holidays and plan for 2019, I wanted to reflect on the key themes and current trends in structured credit based on my interactions with leaders and innovators in the market.

This year, ABS East saw an encouraging level of DLT specialists from larger industry participants attend for the first time. The underlying technology is now a few years old, and senior leaders in the securitization industry have become increasingly familiar with the end-value state of cheaper and faster transactions with greater asset integrity.

There is now a growing consensus that the decentralized nature of DLT supports our sector’s broader digital transformation goals, and that it can help us move away from a siloed ecosystem that has not been able to realize the same common protocol benefits seen in other asset classes.

The ABS opportunity

Harmonized data standards, shared infrastructure and immutable records have the ability to transform how asset-backed securities participants interact in the ecosystem.

Everybody, myself included, is on a journey of discovery here. That journey started over three years ago with a recognition of immutable, better record-keeping. This was followed by understanding of the value of a shared system of record to ensure that all permissioned parties in a transaction to have access the same underlying loan information.

These autumn conferences focused on the next phase of on-chain digital assets. In discussing these digital assets I’ve often been asked, “Don’t we already have digital loans?”

Even within the minority of the asset-backed securities market, where the application and origination process has been digitized, a PDF of a loan document is very different from a digital asset in the efficiency and sophistication with which it can be transacted in the credit markets.

A loan as a digital asset on-chain can be transacted with the ease, speed and certainty of other digital assets like cryptocurrencies (AML/KYC permitting), while the PDF document is still dependent on the legacy model taking weeks and significant cost to execute transactions, with limited contextual asset information attached or ability to run smart contracts.

We are seeing the emergence of two paths here: asset-backed tokens (or loan-backed) and loans native to the blockchain. In the token model, the original authoritative copy of the loan document is securely locked down with an associated token representing ownership interest and core asset characteristics.

This facilitates more efficient transactions and introduces a chain of title and verification not seen before in the market. In the native model, the loan lives solely on the blockchain, cannot be copied, printed, double spent or misrepresented.

Given the majority of lending is still paper-based, we expect to see a domination of asset-backed tokens for a while. The transaction and management of both asset types in the capital markets we call Digital Structured Credit.

Current stage of adoption

It is fair to say that capital markets is over the “hype” phase of Gartner’s adoption model with DLT.

As with any new technology, many overestimate the speed of adoption, but the market underestimates equally the long-term impact. The credit market is slightly behind most electronically traded asset classes that saw low risk in applying DLT to settlement & clearing inefficiencies.

The following is an exclusive contribution to CoinDesk’s 2018 Year in Review. 

We are at the end of another busy autumn conference season, and I have had the opportunity to speak at half a dozen events to focus on the intersection of capital markets and distributed ledger technology.

As we wind down for the holidays and plan for 2019, I wanted to reflect on the key themes and current trends in structured credit based on my interactions with leaders and innovators in the market.

This year, ABS East saw an encouraging level of DLT specialists from larger industry participants attend for the first time. The underlying technology is now a few years old, and senior leaders in the securitization industry have become increasingly familiar with the end-value state of cheaper and faster transactions with greater asset integrity.

There is now a growing consensus that the decentralized nature of DLT supports our sector’s broader digital transformation goals, and that it can help us move away from a siloed ecosystem that has not been able to realize the same common protocol benefits seen in other asset classes.

The ABS opportunity

Harmonized data standards, shared infrastructure and immutable records have the ability to transform how asset-backed securities participants interact in the ecosystem.

Everybody, myself included, is on a journey of discovery here. That journey started over three years ago with a recognition of immutable, better record-keeping. This was followed by understanding of the value of a shared system of record to ensure that all permissioned parties in a transaction to have access the same underlying loan information.

These autumn conferences focused on the next phase of on-chain digital assets. In discussing these digital assets I’ve often been asked, “Don’t we already have digital loans?”

Even within the minority of the asset-backed securities market, where the application and origination process has been digitized, a PDF of a loan document is very different from a digital asset in the efficiency and sophistication with which it can be transacted in the credit markets.

A loan as a digital asset on-chain can be transacted with the ease, speed and certainty of other digital assets like cryptocurrencies (AML/KYC permitting), while the PDF document is still dependent on the legacy model taking weeks and significant cost to execute transactions, with limited contextual asset information attached or ability to run smart contracts.

We are seeing the emergence of two paths here: asset-backed tokens (or loan-backed) and loans native to the blockchain. In the token model, the original authoritative copy of the loan document is securely locked down with an associated token representing ownership interest and core asset characteristics.

This facilitates more efficient transactions and introduces a chain of title and verification not seen before in the market. In the native model, the loan lives solely on the blockchain, cannot be copied, printed, double spent or misrepresented.

Given the majority of lending is still paper-based, we expect to see a domination of asset-backed tokens for a while. The transaction and management of both asset types in the capital markets we call Digital Structured Credit.

Current stage of adoption

It is fair to say that capital markets is over the “hype” phase of Gartner’s adoption model with DLT.

As with any new technology, many overestimate the speed of adoption, but the market underestimates equally the long-term impact. The credit market is slightly behind most electronically traded asset classes that saw low risk in applying DLT to settlement & clearing inefficiencies.

OTW: How did you come up with the name Anomalie?

Dupuis: I was initially looking for a name that was spelled in French, but that could also be pronounced in English and other languages. "Anomalie" made sense since it represented the "unconventional" approach I had/have of producing music that's influenced by many genres and has a performed instrument (the keyboard) as the centerpiece. I still think it's appropriate, but it's definitely not unconventional in today's world where more and more instrumentalists are stepping into the production scene, and where most genres are actually hybrids with multiple influences.

OTW: Though you are a classically trained pianist, what inspired you to move more towards a jazz-funk music realm?

Dupuis: During high school, I started "producing" electronic tracks with Garage Band, and most of the music I was listening to was electronic (Deadmau5, Wolfgang Gartner, Koan Sound and Skrillex later on, etc.). I was fascinated by all the synths they used and I was convinced that all those sounds were played in real time, so my approach early on was to record similar sounds by performing them on the keyboard. I later discovered that it was rarely the case in electronic music, which is totally fine, but when I found out about Herbie Hancock and the jazz fusion world where they actually shredded amazing solos with synth sounds, I was in heaven. I did a 4-year program studying jazz performance and played in a couple of ensembles, after which I was introduced to a local hip hop jam session in Montreal. I joined the house band and discovered a whole world there, which I absolutely loved. All of those experiences and my classical background heavily contributed to what Anomalie is today. 

OTW: Ever since your debut EP Métropole dropped in 2017, it has garnered lots of attention from listeners all around the world. What/who were some of your biggest inspirations for the creation of this project?

Dupuis: Dave Grusin, Herbie Hancock, J Dilla, Oscar Peterson, Skrillex, Brahms, Stravinski, Ennio Morricone, Vangelis, D'Angelo, MJ, Quincy Jones

OTW: You sold out your first ever Canadian/North American tour earlier this year with a four-piece band. Now you’re set to tour Europe and Asia with them this Fall. How did you go about putting together your band? How does the band recreate your productions live?

Dupuis: What I call "the old Anomalie" started in 2012. It was a way different project back then, in many many ways, so I like to think of Métropole as the start of the current Anomalie, even if the project evolves in various directions moving forward. When it did start back then though, I was already playing with a live band for local shows in Montréal. It consisted of some great friends I made during the Jazz Performance program at Cégep Saint-Laurent. I still play with them and an awesome drummer I met at the hip-hop jam session, LeCypher (which is still going on every Thursday at Bootlegger, it's absolutely amazing.) It definitely was a challenge to start with the live band right away for the first tour, since there are so many aspects to consider and work on, given the nature of the set, and they are all very, very time consuming. But it's incredibly rewarding, and I'm so grateful for those guys, they're great people and great musicians. I re-arrange the song so that everyone performs the main parts of the tracks, with tons of patches and effects. What we can't play on top of what we're already playing, I leave in the backing tracks.

OTW: Your second EP Métropole Part II is set to release on Oct 5th. What can listeners expect from this EP? Is there a stark contrast between Métropole and Métropole Part II, or are they cohesive sonically?

Dupuis: It's definitely a continuity of the first one, with a shared theme and sonic universe. I would say that it's a bit less electronic, and even more focused on the piano as a lead instrument.

OTW: Can we expect any collaborations with other artists in the future?

Dupuis: Yes, this upcoming year is all about collaborations. Métropole as a series is about my own creative, sonic universe, whereas for all future releases I am definitely interested in working with as many different people as possible.

OTW: Who are some of your Ones to Watch?

Dupuis: Tennyson has been so inspiring for me since I discovered them, I look forward to every release with lots of excitement. The amount of detail in each track is crazy. Knower and Louis Cole's solo stuff are also crazy, and the direction they're taking with the live band/big band stuff is huge. One of the most inspiring phenomenons I've been following very closely though is the rise of crazy talented and hard-working young (sometimes surprisingly young!?) musicians.
