"One Is Held In Attempted Chatham Jail Delivery," Windsor Star. October 28, 1943. Page 3 & 6. --- D. J. Payne Of Windsor Is Arrested ---- Governor Nabs Man as He Tries to Climb Wall and Fires Upon Waiting Car ---- From Chatham Bureau of The Windsor Star CHATHAM, Ont., Oct. 28. - What is believed to have been an attempt to break into the Kent County jail here and release one or more prisoners from the cells was broken up about 11:15 last night by Phillip Daigneau, governor of the jail, who caught Danny James Payne, of Windsor, allegedly climbing over the jail wall, and fired several shots at a waiting car which then sped away in the darkness toward Windsor.
GIVEN REMAND Payne was remanded without plea until next Wednesday by Magistrate Ivan B. Craig in Chatham police court this morning on a charge that he "did assist Allen Baldwin and Franklin Smith in an attempted escape from lawful custody in Kent county jail."
Baldwin is under sentence of four years on a charge of receiving stolen tires and along with Smith is awaiting trial for the $34,000 armed robbery of the Royal Bank at Wheatley. Ont., on September 10. They were committed for trial recently along with Leo Dubroy, Peter Delvin and Vernard Gates who have been released on bail.
Jail Governor Daigneau stated that he fired several shots at the fleeing car and believes he hit it at least once. He described the car as a light green 1940 or 1941 Ford coach or sedan and said the first part of the licence read 6-J.
HIGHWAYS WATCHED Ontario provincial police all through Kent and Essex counties were immediately warned and the highways between Chatham and Windsor fully patrolled.
The charge against Payne, who gave his address as 920 Ouellette avenue, was laid by Crown Attorney A. Douglas Bell, K.C.
Indication that Kent jail officials had feared some attempt might be made to free Baldwin and Smith was seen in the report that extra guards had been put on.
Jail Governor Daigneau was outside the jail when he saw someone trying to scale the 25-foot stone wall with a rope. It is believed there were five men but the others fled in the car while Daigneau captured Payne. Some neighbors who heard the shooting believe that the men in the car returned the fire.
MR. DAIGNEAU'S STORY "We had been watching everything here very closely," Mr. Daigneau told The Star today. "Last night shortly after 11 when I came out of my house adjoining the jail to make my rounds, I noticed two parked cars. Recognizing one of them, I walked toward it but just as I did it pulled away.
"I yelled at the driver to stop but he didn't so I fired at the tires as it turned off Stanley avenue onto Prince street. I again fired at the tires as it sped along Prince. I didn't fire higher because I didn't know who was in the car.
"I then ran back and played my flashlight on the walls of the jail and told the night turnkey to advise the police that this particular car was in town.
SAW MAN ON WALL "I rushed back to the Seventh street side of the jail and when I put my light on the wall I saw a man huddled over the top of the wall, sort of bending over.
"I fired one shot close to him to frighten him and then told him to put his hands up and come down with his back toward me. I told him to drop and then turn and face me. I kept my light on him and my gun ready and then slowly backed toward Stanley avenue and shouted for help."
PAYNE SEARCHE DR. D. Scott, of the Bank of Commerce, N. H. Plomley, insurance agent and Major William Bexton of the Salvation Army, who live close to the jail responded and Mr. Plomley searched Payne for weapons.
Detective Jack Harrington and Constable William Craven of Chatham police arrived then, followed by Provincial Constables A. R. Peters and John Bain.
After Payne was taken in the police cruiser to the city police cells, Governor Daigneau and the police searched the jail yard but found no one else.
STRONG ROPE LADDER Mr. Daigneau said that preparations for the attempted jail break apparently had been well made because a strong rope ladder with a hook on the end of it was thrown to the top of the wall from the outside and then dropped from the top to the yard below.
He said Payne had a stick with him which apparently had been used to try and pass weapons through to prisoners. Payne did not get to a window, he said.Questioned by The Star, Mr. Daigneau would not say if any weapons had been found on Payne, in the jail yard or in the jail.
He said no shots had been fired at him from those in the fleeing car.
There had been no tip-off but jail officials have been especially vigilant in the past few weeks, it was reported.
Mr. Daigneau was high in his praise of city and provincial police for their prompt arrival on the scene.

The transaction is the first known instance of money flowing from Crow to the Supreme Court justice. The sale netted the GOP megadonor two vacant lots and the house where Thomas’ mother was living.
In 2014, one of Texas billionaire Harlan Crow’s companies purchased a string of properties on a quiet residential street in Savannah, Georgia. It wasn’t a marquee acquisition for the real estate magnate, just an old single-story home and two vacant lots down the road. What made it noteworthy were the people on the other side of the deal: Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and his relatives.
The transaction marks the first known instance of money flowing from the Republican megadonor to the Supreme Court justice. The Crow company bought the properties for $133,363 from three co-owners — Thomas, his mother and the family of Thomas’ late brother, according to a state tax document and a deed dated Oct. 15, 2014, filed at the Chatham County courthouse.
The purchase put Crow in an unusual position: He now owned the house where the justice’s elderly mother was living. Soon after the sale was completed, contractors began work on tens of thousands of dollars of improvements on the two-bedroom, one-bathroom home, which looks out onto a patch of orange trees. The renovations included a carport, a repaired roof and a new fence and gates, according to city permit records and blueprints.
A federal disclosure law passed after Watergate requires justices and other officials to disclose the details of most real estate sales over $1,000. Thomas never disclosed his sale of the Savannah properties. That appears to be a violation of the law, four ethics law experts told ProPublica.

MARQUETTE, Mich (WJMN) – The Women’s Center is on the hunt for any extra keys you might have around your house. Gail Rinaldi, the Finance Manager with the Women’s Center is looking to help people find the key to their happiness this summer. Rinaldi said her idea for this project all started with a sign.
“There was a plaque on the wall back at Pak Ratz, and as I was walking through there one day, and I seen that and I was, it just struck me like a light bulb,” Rinaldi said.
Once all of the keys are collected Rinaldi and her team are going to clean the keys up, and attach a motivational card to each key. The Women’s Center will then begin scattering the keys all over Marquette and Alger counties for people to discover.
“I just think that in the year that we’ve had that everyone needs to be responsible for their own happiness,” Rinaldi said. “We’ve all had a very tough year. And sometimes when you’re feeling sad, if you just have something you can touch, or look at and say, wow, there’s people out there that care about me. And you’re just going to feel better about yourself.”

Orange County
UNC Health is pausing administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine after a few recipients reported feeling faint after receiving the shot. Over the last two days, healthcare workers administered more than 2,200 doses of the vaccine at the Friday Center and Hillsborough clinics; around five people reported feeling faint after receiving the shot at the Friday Center, a spokesperson for the healthcare system said. UNC healthcare system officials are continuing to assess the situation and conferring with the state Department of Health and Human Services, the spokesperson said.
UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz says he expects campus life to be "as close to normal as possible" this fall, with many students living on campus and attending in-person classes.
Durham County
More Durham and Wake County middle and high school students returned to schools for in-person classes this week.
Wake County
Wake County has also paused administering the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, "out of an abundance of caution," according to a Thursday press statement. More than 2,300 doses of the J & J vaccine were administered at the PNC Arena county vaccination site yesterday, but 18 recipients reported adverse reactions and had to be evaluated by EMS. Of those 18, 14 had minor reactions; four had to be transported to nearby hospitals for further evaluation. Wake County is also assessing the situation in partnership with NC DHHS. More than 4.5 million people have received the J & J vaccine in the United States.
Elsewhere
Here's a list of places in central North Carolina where you can get a COVID shot.
An Elon University survey of 1,400 North Carolina residents found that the majority (58 percent) think Confederate monuments should remain in public spaces. But the percentage of respondents who think they should be removed (42 percent) grew by seven percentage points when the same issue was polled in 2019, indicating generational gaps.
New research from Duke University indicates that desegregation of schools was not universally beneficial for Black students.
"The key point is school desegregation, in and of itself, is not unequivocally beneficial to black students on a number of standard indicators used to assess the effects," says William A. Darity, a professor in Duke's Sanford School of Public Policy. "We have to make sure that black students receive fair treatment and quality instruction and curriculum once they are inside the door."
Thousands of North Carolina's health care professionals have declined to get the COVID-19 vaccine. But the numbers are similar to those nationally.
The state paid Ronnie Long, who was wrongly imprisoned for 44 for years for a rape he didn't commit, $750,000, the maximum allowed under state law for victims of wrongful incarceration. Long's attorney calls the sum "wholly inadequate."
U.S. Senator Thom Tillis is recovering from surgery to treat prostate cancer.
Former NFL player Phillip Adams killed his doctor, his doctor's wife, their two grandchildren, and an air conditioning technician in a mass shooting Wednesday before turning the gun on himself at his parents' house in Rock Hill, S.C., near Charlotte. Adams suffered two concussions over a three-game stretch during his six-year NFL career. The sheriff's office hasn't released a motive but Adams' father, Alonzo Adams, told a Charlotte TV station, "I think football messed him up."
President Joe Biden announced some modest measures to combat the "epidemic and an international embarrassment" of gun violence in America through executive action. But some of his biggest ambitions for reigning in gun violence, including banning the importation of assault weapons, enacting a voluntary gun buyback program, and providing more resources to the Justice Department and FBI to track firearms and better enforce current gun laws will require action from Congress.
Relatedly, N.C. Democrats yesterday filed a "red flag" bill, where the courts can seize firearms from people deemed a hazard to others or themselves, as is law in 19 other states. It will likely have a difficult time passing.
Statewide COVID-19 by the numbers: Thursday, April 8
2,087 New lab-confirmed cases (926,897 total; seven-day average trending down)
1,004 Current hospitalizations reported (seven-day average going down; 12,224 total deaths, +12 over Thursday)
33,163 Completed tests (11.59 million total; most recent positive rate was 5.1 percent)
5,516,517 Total vaccinations administered (State data not updated daily)
Today's weather Warm with partly to mostly cloudy skies and chances of a thunderstorm. A high of 83 degrees.
Song of the day Grande Gato, Bonita Señorita, and Poco Perro: Callate (Spanish Hangover) From the Buena Vida music project. Thanks to Grande Gato for the submission. Have a great weekend, everyone!

Evil Ghosts and a Haunted Jail in Georgia
A lot of ghostly phenomena is, although frightening to the witness, more often than not actually rather harmless. Objects moving, lights flickering, bumps and noises, and even faint apparitions, all of this is for the most part fairly innocuous. However, at times there are alleged spirits or entities that are decidedly more vicious, and one of these can be supposedly be found residing in an old abandoned jail in the U.S. state of Georgia, a building which itself has garnered a reputation as being ground zero for a wide range of high strangeness.
One of the most haunted places in all of Georgia, and indeed the entire United States, is said to be the old Chatham County Jail in Savannah, located on the corner of Oglethorpe Avenue and Montgomery Street. The jail spent decades housing up to 300 hundred inmates at a time, and was even said to have its share of hangings during this time, up until 1989, when it was shut down and became a storage area for city archives, eventually being abandoned altogether in 2006 and going on to be made into an annual haunted house for Halloween operated as a fundraiser for the Chatham County Youth Commission and the Wounded Warrior Project. This is perhaps fitting, as although the inmates might be gone now, there are said to be some that still linger in one form or another.
Reported paranormal activity began to be reported from the jail shortly after the inmates were moved and the building repurposed. Employees at the archives were persistently terrorized by disembodied footsteps or voices, as well as phantom shouting, banging on the walls, and the elevator doors opening and closing by themselves. More violent activity was often reported as well, such as unseen hands pushing, shoving, or hitting people when no one else was there. These sorts of unexplained occurrences have continued right up to the present, with visitors reporting similar anomalous happenings and a thick, pervasive cloud of dread that seems to hang over everything here. One haunted house worker even claimed that a 150 pound metal plate was forcefully hurled across a room by an unknown force, which was supposedly witnessed by several visitors. One Maj. Russell Smith from the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said of the place:
I worked here in ‘89 and ‘90, and it was kind of a weird place back then. I worked the midnight shift, and it was dark and kind of echoing. You would hear a door slam or hear some footprints in the stairwell, but there would be nobody there. It’s definitely weird here. I guess your mind kind of plays tricks on you.
In addition to the various ghostly phenomena at the old jail there are actual individual entities that have accrued a rather sinister reputation, and one of these is widely regarded as being one of the most violent ghosts there is. The apparition is said to be the spirit of a one-time inmate by the name of Carl Isaacs, who had quite the violent past. Isaacs had already been imprisoned once in Maryland, and in 1973 had escaped with two others. The group of cons then headed towards Florida in a stolen car, after which they ran out of gas in a rural area of Georgia and decided to steal that too.
While they were at it, a mobile home nearby caught Isaacs’ attention and he decided to rob the family there, called the Aldays. Things would get a bit out of hand, and rather than just a simple robbery turned into a massacre in which all 5 of the family men were shot dead, and Mary Alday was brutally gang raped, killed, and unceremoniously dumped in the woods. The grisly murders would shock the nation at the time, and Isaacs was sentenced to death. As he tried to fight the courts with appeals he was imprisoned at Chatham County Jail for decades before finally being put to death by lethal injection in May of 2003.
It is perhaps no surprise that Isaacs’ old cell is considered to by far the most intensely haunted part of the jail, and it seems that this spirit means business. If one is lucky, they will merely be accosted by a purportedly incredibly oppressive wave of malevolence and dread that is said to be absolutely staggering. Even outside of the cell itself visitors report that the tendrils of this intense sinister energy can be felt reaching out, and it is said to be almost like a palpable sense of total vehemence and hatred. If one is less lucky they may be pushed, clawed, punched, bitten, or have their hair pulled by the unseen entity, and it seems that these attacks rarely stop unless the victim can get out of the cell. Indeed, so evil and malicious is this entity and the dread it exudes that even hardened paranormal investigators are terrified of the cell.
The Chatham County jail has become a haven for various paranormal investigators, who claim that the building has some of the most active EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and other readings they have ever seen. One such investigator, a Ryan Dunn of the Savannah Ghost Research Society, has taken a team there overnight and claims that it is by far one of the most haunted places in Georgia. During their stay they recorded numerous audio recordings, with over 50 anomalous audio recordings made, with disembodied voices saying their names, telling the team to go away, one voice saying “Look at me,” and another saying “Bleep! Hey, where you guys at? Was that an alarm?”, as well as images and thermal imaging of a shadowy figure crouching and skulking about the corridors and cells, and Dunn would say of the spooky investigation:
We came in with a lot of equipment and pretty much investigated the place. We caught a lot with audio. We did capture a couple with thermal imaging and thermal cameras. We caught on a thermal camera this shadow figure that was walking back and forth in the halls and Corey actually got a photo of it on thermal so we even saw it come into one of the cells, crouch down, stand up and walk right back out. So that was a little unsettling. I would say it’s the most haunted place in Savannah. It’s kind of hard to judge. But as far as hard core evidence that we brought back from the investigations, we caught more audio files here than anything we’ve ever caught so I’d definitely say it’s a haunted place. In a prison, I was expecting to get a few things but not all this. This was successful. …The shadow figure on thermal imaging (surprised me). It was walking back in forth in the hallway, and we could see the shadow. This was successful. If people don’t believe, I definitely recommend coming out and at least experiencing it.
Considering the seething negative energy that must have amassed here during its days as a prison, the hangings that were said to have occurred here, and the notoriety of its most famous inmate, perhaps this has imbued this place with some unknown force. Is it possible that this sort of energy can imprint itself onto a location to produce these phenomena, or is this all just the mind playing tricks? Is any of the supposed evidence gathered by paranormal investigators at the jail compelling, or can it all be explained away? It is hard to say, but one thing that is certain is that Chatham County Jail maintains its reputation as being an incredibly haunted place, and as holding perhaps one of the most malignant ghosts around.

This is a digitally remastered and enhanced reproduction. It is based on the 1891 lithograph produced by the Morning News in Savannah, GA. The original copy contained signs of wear and tear, discoloration, small rips, and stains. Some minor imperfections remain. However, the completed print’s restoration presents a colorful characterization of life in Savannah, Georgia in 1891. The map features over 100 places of business, public buildings, railroads, canals, parks, and churches. Small insert images at the top and bottom include the Board of Trade Building, the Chatham County Court House, the historic De Soto Hotel, Guckenhelmer & Sons Wholesale House, and Altmeyer & Co's. Dry Goods Store. The original artist was German-born Augustus Koch. Kotch served in the Engineers Office of the Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War as draftsman, and then later as an officer. He was a prolific artist producing a number of bird’s eye view illustrations.

US election results on knife-edge: Biden maintains lead as Trump unleashes legal battle.

US election results on knife-edge: Biden maintains lead as Trump unleashes legal battle.
Tumblr media
Lawsuits were launched by President Donald Trump across America yesterday, adding fresh drama to a presidential election that is already on knife edge. Lawyers were running in and out of law courts in at least five states yesterday disputing or affirming results. Democratic Party candidate Joe Biden is currently leading Trump by 264 to 214 electoral votes and is favourite to win the election. Key wins for both candidates in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada and Arizona will determine the final lap of the race.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
President Trump’s moves to stop further vote counts in about four swing states however suffered a setback in Georgia and Michigan where the two court yesterday dismissed two separate law suits. In Georgia where Trump maintains a slim led against his Democrat rival, Joe Biden, the state court dismissed the lawsuit filed by Georgia Republicans to prevent the “unlawful counting of ballots received after the election” in Savannah.
They filed the lawsuit after a poll watcher for the party allegedly viewed unprocessed absentee ballots mixed in with absentee ballots that were set to be tabulated. Judge James F. Bass made the ruling orally in court Thursday morning. The state Republican party and the Trump campaign said they filed the court documents in Chatham County Superior Court on Wednesday evening after a party poll watcher “witnessed absentee ballots that had not been properly processed apparently mixed into a pile of absentee ballots that was already set to be tabulated.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The proper chain of custody for the ballots was not followed,” they alleged according to court documents. The ballots in question were small in number: “one stack of three ballots and a second stack of fifty-three ballots, according to a copy of the filing provided by the state Republican party. In Michigan, a judge tossed a lawsuit brought by Trump’s campaign that demanded halting vote-counting in the state.
Michigan Court of Claims Judge Cynthia Stephens made the ruling during a court hearing on Thursday. She said she planned to issue a written ruling on Friday. The lawsuit claimed Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, was allowing absentee ballots to be counted without teams of bipartisan observers as well as challengers.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
She was accused of undermining the “constitutional right of all Michigan voters … to participate in fair and lawful elections.” Benson, through state attorneys, denied the allegations. Much of the dispute centered on the TCF Center in Detroit where pro-Trump protesters gathered while absentee ballots were being counted. Little succor in Pennsylvania Trump’s attorneys claimed in a Pennsylvania court that one of their observers in Philadelphia wasn’t allowed close enough to ballot processing.
They lost at the entry level court, but filed an appeal and a judge weighed in Thursday morning. Trump lawyer Pam Bondi said on Fox Business Network that an appellate judge entered an order “saying that we are to be immediately let in that convention center with 6-foot distancing of all aspects of that vote counting effective immediately so we can observe these votes being counted.” Trump’s campaign aides claimed the ruling allows them to better observe the vote counting in Philadelphia, and they threatened to be on the watch for what they called improper ballots.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
“It guarantees we’re gonna be able to watch the ballots being counted,” said Trump deputy campaign manager Justin Clark. Elections officials have appealed the ruling to the state Supreme Court, but they briefly paused counting in Philadelphia to reconfigure their space to comply with the order. Trump advisers scheduled the conference call to insist they have not given up in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada and Georgia, all states Trump needs to win if he is to retain the presidency. “We are going to keep fighting for this election,” campaign manager Bill Stepien said.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Dozen arrested as protesters demand vote count Police arrested dozens of people in Seattle, Minneapolis and Portland, Oregon overnight during protests demanding a tally of all votes in the US election, while smaller groups backing Trump returned to tabulation sites in closely contested states to insist counting be halted. In Seattle, seven people were arrested. In Minneapolis, police arrested more than 600 demonstrators who marched onto an interstate protesting Trump’s threats to challenge the election results. In Portland, protesters smashed windows at businesses, hurled objects including fireworks at officers. Police made at least 10 arrests, according to a statement from the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.
In New York, hundreds of people paraded past boarded-up luxury stores on Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue, and in Chicago, demonstrators marched through downtown and along a street across the river from Trump Tower. Protesters also gathered in cities including Los Angeles, Houston, Pittsburgh and San Diego. Shares jump as dollar slips The dollar slipped and tech stocks rallied further on Thursday as Democrat Joe Biden drew closer to winning the U.S. presidency while the Bank of England became the latest central bank to say it will increase stimulus. Investors leapt on the prospect of gridlock in Congress and the notion Silicon Valley will be spared greater oversight as the Democrats are unlikely to win control of the Senate.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Tech shares in Europe jumped almost 3%[.EU], extending a rally of more than 8% this week, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow industrials rose 1% or more. European stocks hit two-week highs on strong earnings reports and after the Bank of England increased its already huge bond-buying stimulus by 150 billion pounds ($195 billion), or about 50 billion pounds more than expected. On Wall Street, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.47%, the S&P 500 gained 1.61% and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.93%. Overnight in Asia, stocks rallied 2% to reach their highest since February 2018.

Japan’s Nikkei rose 1.7% to a more than nine-month top, South Korea gained 2.4% and Chinese blue chips added 1.3% on hopes a Biden White House would ease up on tariffs. The U.S. dollar fell to two-week lows against a basket of currencies and a seven-month low against the Japanese yen as the likelihood of a Democratic blue wave in the White House and Congress slowly vanished, snuffing any large U.S. stimulus package. Iran’s Supreme leader mocks US democracy Iran’s supreme leader has mocked the rancorous aftermath of election day in the United States, saying that the vote has exposed the reality of US democracy. “What a spectacle!” supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tweeted late Wednesday. One says this is the most fraudulent election in US history. Who says that? The president who is currently in office. “His rival says Trump intends to rig the election! This is how #USElections & US democracy are.”

The deepening polarisation of US politics since Trump’s surprise election victory four years ago has drawn expressions of concern even from Western allies, with Germany warning of a “very explosive situation” in the aftermath of the poll. Despite US allegations that Tehran sought to use social media to influence voters in the run-up to polling day, Iran’s leadership has publicly insisted it favours neither candidate, despite their sharply divergent policies towards Tehran. Trump has led a campaign of “maximum pressure” against the Islamic republic, pulling Washington out of a multilateral deal on Iran’s nuclear programme and reimposing crippling unilateral sanctions.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Biden has signalled he is ready to rejoin the landmark nuclear agreement struck in 2015 when he served as vice president under Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama. But on Tuesday, Khamenei insisted the outcome of the election would have no impact on Iranian policy. Facebook removes group calling for ‘civil war’ over election A huge viral Facebook group spreading unsubstantiated claims that there is a Democratic party plot to “steal” the election has been removed by the social media firm. Among the comments inside the group were threats of violence and calls for civil war and revolution.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
A Facebook spokesperson says it took action because of “worrying calls for violence” in the group “which was creating real-world events”. “Stop the Steal” was set up yesterday had more than 330,000 members before it was taken down. Posts called for its members to take to the streets in the event that Joe Biden is declared the next US president. Dozens of comments went much further and encouraged people to take up arms or even shoot their political opponents. Some threatened rioting and looting.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The group taken down by Facebook was the by far the largest of a handful of “Stop the Steal” forums set up since election day. On Tuesday, a “#StoptheSteal” label gained a bit of popularity on Twitter, and included baseless and misleading claims of voter fraud and dirty tricks. Similar claims have been circulating in the Facebook group. The allegations include some of the ones we’ve debunked Facebook says it removed the group “in line with the exceptional measures that we are taking during this period of heightened tension”. It also said the group “was organised around the delegitimisation of the election process”.

“Recluse, 86, Was Victim,” Windsor Star. May 12, 1942. Page 12. ---- Trio Arrested at Whitby Brought to Chatham for Trial --- From Chatham Bureau of The Windsor Star CHATHAM, May 12. Maintaining stoical attitudes, three gypsies, two men and a woman, were arraigned before Magistrate I. B. Craig in county police court here today charged with break, enter and theft of $20,000 in bearer bonds, property of Samuel Freeman, 86-year-old Kent County recluse.
No plea or election of trial was made and the three, represented by Ralph D. Steele, were remanded one week In custody. They are Frank Demitro, 60; Ephraim Butch, 22, and Mary Demitro, 32.
ARRESTED AT WHITBY They were arrested at a gypsy encampment on the outskirts of Whitby by provincial police and Toronto detectives. Taken into custody over the week-end, they were returned here by Provincial Constables Gordon Barber and Jack Bain of the Chatham detachment.
The bonds were reported stolen April 20, from Freeman's home where he lives alone. Police claim to have recovered $12,000 worth of the bonds.
Police stated that Freeman complained on March 25 that two women had called at his house selling pots and pans, and when they left $12,000 in bonds were missing. The next day the farmer said three persons entered his house and took another $8,000 In bonds.
The robbery did not become known to the police here until several days after the occurrence, as Freeman, unable to leave the house where he lived alone, was not able to communicate with the authorities. The complaint was made to the police by a man who calls frequently at Freeman’s home to take him supplies of food.
CAME TWICE Freeman told officers assigned to the case that the people who went to his house claimed they were government agents and demanded to see his bonds. They returned a second day and took some more.
In appropriating the bonds the miscreants overlooked mortagages worth another $20,000. Freeman is suffering from a growth on his face and while he spends most of his time in bed he attends to his housework and prepares his own meals. He resolutely refuses to enter a hospital.

Biden predicts victory in U.S. election; Trump launches lawsuits to stop vote counting
Democrat Joe Biden on Wednesday predicted victory over President Donald Trump after winning two critical U.S. states, while the Republican incumbent alleged fraud, filed lawsuits and demanded recounts in a race yet to be decided a day after polls closed.
While stopping short of declaring victory, Biden launched a website for a transition to a Democratic-controlled White House. His team called it buildbackbetter.com and declared “the Biden-Harris Administration can hit the ground running on Day One.”
As Trump spent part of the day airing grievances over Twitter, Biden pledged to govern as a unifier if triumphant.
“What brings us together as Americans is so much stronger than anything that can tear us apart,” Biden, appearing with his running mate Kamala Harris, said in his home state of Delaware on Wednesday.
At the moment, not including Wisconsin, where the Republican Trump has demanded a recount, Edison Research gives Biden a 243 to 213 lead over Trump in Electoral College votes, which are largely based on a state’s population.
A former vice president with five decades in public life, Biden, 77, was projected by television networks to win the Midwestern states of Michigan and Wisconsin, a boost to his hopes of entering the White House on Jan. 20.
Trump, 74, who won both states in 2016, now has fewer options to secure a second four-year term. He hopes to avoid becoming the first incumbent U.S. president to lose a re-election bid since George H.W. Bush in 1992.
Trump has long sought to undermine the credibility of the voting process if he lost. Since Tuesday, he has falsely declared victory, accused Democrats of trying to steal the election without evidence and vowed to fight states in court.
U.S. election experts say fraud is very rare.
Trump’s campaign fought to keep his chances alive with the demand for a Wisconsin recount as well as lawsuits in Michigan and Pennsylvania to stop vote counting. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson called his team’s lawsuit “frivolous.”
His campaign filed a lawsuit in Georgia to require that Chatham County, which includes the city of Savannah, separate and secure late-arriving ballots to ensure they are not counted.
It also asked the U.S. Supreme Court to allow Trump to join a pending lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania Republicans over whether the battleground state should be permitted to accept late-arriving ballots.
The maneuvers amounted to a broad effort to contest the results of a still undecided election a day after millions of Americans went to the polls during the coronavirus pandemic that has upended daily life.
While fighting to stop the count in states where he feared losing, Trump blasted news organizations that projected losses in Arizona and Nevada, two states he thought he should be winning. He tweeted his consternation over mail-in voting.
“They are finding Biden votes all over the place — in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. So bad for our Country!” he posted on Twitter.
Biden said every vote must be counted. “No one’s going to take our democracy away from us, not now, not ever,” he said.
Voting concluded on Tuesday night, but many states routinely take days to finish counting ballots, bolstered by a surge in mail-in ballots nationally because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Other closely contested states, including Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and North Carolina, were still counting votes, leaving the national election outcome uncertain.

We Asked 10 Brewers: What Music Is Playing in the Brewhouse?
Tumblr media
Music is omnipresent. It accompanies us on morning commutes, on windows-down drives through the countryside, and through air travel over oceans. It provides the soundtrack to great parties, bad breakups, days in, and nights out. More than just a tangible stimulus, music affects our moods — and our beer.
In many professions, music can play an integral role. At breweries, it can inspire creativity; alleviate the monotony and loneliness of an overnight shift; or give taproom patrons a sense of a brewery’s identity or vibe.
With that in mind, we asked 10 brewers what tunes they’re playing in the brewhouse or taproom.
“We’ve been on an angsty Irish and British punk/post-punk kick. One of the best shows I’ve ever been to was Fontaines D.C. with IDLES earlier this year, and both have earned regular spots in the rotation since. Going down the Irish punk rabbit hole in particular recently has brought the likes of Silverbacks, Just Mustard, and the Murder Capital to name a few. There’s something about depressing music that reminds me that our jobs are usually pretty fun.” — Joe Connolly, Director, Springdale Beer, Framingham, MA
“We have a steady flow of ska music that plays as our brewhouse soundtrack, usually infused with reggae, punk rock, and some rockabilly, too. We’ve listened to a lot of Rancid throwbacks this year especially.” — Kurt Randall, Head Brewer, Ska Brewing, Durango, CO
“My dad, Papa Ron, works a lot in the brewery before we open and plays ‘60s and ‘70s country jams, so you hear a lot of the Everly Brothers and Johnny Cash. During taproom hours, expect a heavy rotation of Drive-By Truckers, Chatham County Line, Chris Stapleton, Shovels & Rope and the likes. We even made a Spotify playlist so our customers can daydream they’re in the taproom while they’re really just at work. We primarily choose Americana, country, bluegrass, etc., because this is the music myself and my brother, another co-owner of Seedstock, grew up with. It’s in our blood and in our beer. This straightforward craftsmanship of Americana music inspires us to create straightforward beer for the hardworking folk.” — Jason Abbott, Brewer, Seedstock, Denver, CO
“Music in the warehouse is always very interesting. Our employees don’t wear headphones for safety reasons, so we have a large speaker in the center of the warehouse that can be heard from all corners. But some of them also have individual speakers in their stations. Walking around, you can hear a wide range of music. For instance, this morning Stevie Wonder is playing over the loudspeaker, but I also heard some GoldLink (underground hip hop) and Amy Winehouse, all in my morning walk-through.” —Heather Franchini, Production Coordinator, Belching Beaver, San Diego, CA
“Morning mash in [is] William Basinski’s ‘Watermusic.’ Phish, Jerry Garcia Band, Four Tet, Erykah Badu are on heavy rotation. Droning (mashing) out is Sleep (a ‘stoner metal band’). But the best tunes are when we shut off the Sonos, open the garage bay, and delve into the deep forest cuts of our home in Newcastle.” —Tyler “T2” Silvde, Brewer, Oxbow Brewing, Newcastle, ME
“Tool, Grateful Dead, Poolside, down tempo beats and most importantly, funk! Looking at what I listened to today I’ve got The Cactus Channel, Run the Jewels, Stephan Bodzin, Bonobo, Dave Brubeck Quartet, and Fela Kuti in heavy rotation. I mix it up quite a bit, but that’s a pretty good cross section. Some funk, jazz, Afrobeat, hip-hop, down tempo, blues, and techno are bound to be on the playlist. Gotta change up the music at least as often as the tap board.” — Allen Anderson, Lead Brewer, Station 26 Brewing Co., Denver, CO
“With two teams, one in each location (San Diego and Bell), our brewers at each location have varying tastes in music. [Our] Bell location [shares] the sound system with front of house, [so] our brewers only get to choose their jams for the mornings, and it usually consists of classic rock legends like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Cream, Heroes del Silencio; or hip-hop’s greatest like 2Pac, Biggie, E40, Mac Dre, Kendrick Lamar… anything that gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing to start the day off right is what they enjoy the most. Front of house usually changes it up to either some rock en español, cumbia, or Latin jazz. — Steven Terán, Production Manager/Head of Education, Border X Brewing, San Diego, CA
“Brewing music doesn’t have to be loud and fast, but it has to have intensity. We listen to a lot of indie/psych rock: LCD Soundsystem, Ty Segall, Khruangbin, TV on the Radio, The Growlers, Kikagaku Moyo, Parquet Courts, The Modern Lovers, Pixies, Built to Spill, Dead Milkmen. Bottling days are pretty nerdy: Weird Al & They Might be Giants. Fridays are ‘Fela Fridays’: Fela Kuti, William Onyeabor, and the Spotify Afrobeat station. Songwriters: Bonnie Prince Billy, Andrew Bird, Elliot Smith. Ridiculous bands that are undeniably catchy: Rush, AC/DC, Van Halen, and Hall & Oates. Hip-hop: Jurassic 5, Tribe, Outkast, and The Fugees.” — Sean White, Head Brewer & Founder, Little Fish Brewing Company, Athens, OH
“[For] our production team of six, the top bands and genres are: The Slackers, Modest Mouse, Phish, Rihanna, TV on the Radio, and New Orleans Brass.” — Christian Koch, Head Brewer, Elevation Beer Company, Poncha Springs, CO
“I have a reputation for not listening to anything in the brewery! But that is false, as I only play music while alone to save my work mates from my ‘70s and ‘80s punk and hardcore preferences: Bad Brains, Minor Threat, Naked Raygun, Buzzcocks, Stiff Little Fingers. [Yeah], I’m old and I need something uptempo to get me through a brew day. If my coworkers are around, it switches to ‘80s and ‘90s indie rock: Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Archers of Loaf, Replacements, Husker Du, Red Red Meat. We name many beers after songs from these bands. Also, jam bands are forbidden, forever, always.” — Chris Lohring, Owner, Notch Brewing, Salem, MA

BREAKING:Biden Inches Nearer To Victory As Trump Launches Lawsuit Blitz To Slow Him Down

BREAKING:Biden Inches Nearer To Victory As Trump Launches Lawsuit Blitz To Slow Him Down
Tumblr media
Democrat Joe Biden inched nearer to victory on Thursday over Donald Trump in an exceedingly close U.S. election that hinged on razor-thin margins in a handful of states, while the Republican president launched a flurry of lawsuits hoping to slow down his opponent.
Tensions rose in some places as the ballot counting dragged on two days after polls closed, with a second day of sometimes dueling street demonstrations over the integrity of the election.
Biden, the former U.S. vice president, was continuing to cut into Trump’s leads in Pennsylvania and Georgia while holding on to slim margins in Nevada and Arizona.
Trump, who during the long and rancorous campaign attacked the integrity of the U.S. voting system, has again alleged voting fraud without providing evidence, filed lawsuits and called for at least one state recount.
The latest move by Trump’s campaign was a lawsuit to be announced later on Thursday alleging voting fraud in Nevada, another of the crucial states where he narrowly trails Biden.
Some legal experts called the challenges a long shot unlikely to affect the eventual outcome of the election, one of the most unusual presidential races in modern U.S. history due to the coronavirus pandemic. Concern about the virus caused a huge jump in people voting by mail, delaying the results.
Still, Biden was leading in Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona and closing in on Trump in Georgia and Pennsylvania.
Multiple Trump lawsuits and a recount request would have to succeed and find in some cases tens of thousands of invalid ballots to reverse the result if Biden does prevail.
“What we are seeing on these legal suits are that they are meritless, and nothing more than an attempt to distract and delay what is now inevitable: Joe Biden will be the next president of the United States,” Biden’s campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon told reporters.
Trump’s campaign predicted victory, with campaign manager Bill Stepien saying, “Donald Trump is alive and well” in the election.
Some of the outstanding votes in Georgia and Pennsylvania were clustered in places expected to lean Democratic – like the Atlanta and Philadelphia areas.
In Georgia, officials expressed hope that they would have a resolution in their vote count by the end of Thursday. Trump’s eroding lead stood at around 14,000, with about 2 percent of the ballots remaining to be tallied. Trump’s lead was about 115,000 votes in Pennsylvania, with about 8 percent of the ballots left to be counted.
Trump has to win the states where he is still ahead, including North Carolina, plus either Arizona or Nevada to triumph and avoid becoming the first incumbent U.S. president to lose a re-election bid since fellow Republican George H.W. Bush in 1992.
The president appears to have grown more upset as his leads in some states have diminished or evaporated during the counting. On Thursday morning, he weighed in on Twitter, writing, “STOP THE COUNT!” and “STOP THE FRAUD!” although he has no authority over ballot counting.
Trump, who has often relished legal battles during his long, turbulent, business career, was at the White House, working the phones and monitoring developments on television, two Trump advisers said.
He has been talking to state governors as well as close friends and advisers and dispatched some of this closest advisers out in the field to fight for him.
To capture the White House, a candidate must amass at least 270 votes in the state-by-state Electoral College. Such electoral votes are based largely on a state’s population. Edison Research gave Biden a 243 to 213 lead in Electoral College votes. Other news outlets said Biden had won Wisconsin, which would give him another 10 votes.
The exceedingly close election has underscored the political polarization in the United States and the deep divisions along racial, socioeconomic, religious and generational lines as well as between urban and rural areas.
The counting and court challenges set the stage for days if not weeks of uncertainty before Dec. 8, the deadline to resolve election disputes. The president is sworn into office on Jan. 20, 2021.
RAZOR-THIN MARGINS
Trump’s campaign called for a recount in Wisconsin, where Biden led by roughly 21,000 votes out of 3.3 million cast, a margin slim enough to entitle him to a recount. However elections experts said a recount in Wisconsin was seen as unlikely to alter the result.
Trump’s campaign announced plans to file a Nevada lawsuit alleging a series of voting irregularities in populous Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, such as voting by people who left the state or were dead.
His campaign also filed lawsuits in Michigan and Pennsylvania to stop vote counting. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, in charge of elections, called the Trump team’s lawsuit “frivolous.”
Trump’s campaign filed a lawsuit in Georgia to require that Chatham County, which includes the city of Savannah, separate and secure late-arriving ballots to ensure they are not counted.
It also asked the U.S. Supreme Court to allow Trump to join a pending lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania Republicans over whether the battleground state should be permitted to accept late-arriving ballots that were mailed by Election Day.
Despite Trump’s allegations of fraud and an unsubstantiated charge that Democrats are trying to “steal” the election, U.S. election experts say fraud in balloting is rare.
Thursday marked a second day of peaceful election-related protests as demonstrators rallied in cities including Philadelphia, Washington, Phoenix and Detroit. Some groups, mainly Democrats, rallied around the slogan to “count every vote.”
Some Trump supporters countered with cries to “protect the vote” in support of his campaign’s efforts to have some categories of ballots, including some votes submitted by mail, discarded.
About 200 Trump supporters, some armed with rifles and handguns, gathered outside an election office in Phoenix on Wednesday following unsubstantiated rumors that votes were not being counted.
Biden had drawn about 3.6 million more votes than Trump nationwide. Trump defeated Democrat Clinton in 2016 after winning crucial battleground states and securing the Electoral College win even though she won about 3 million more votes nationwide.

The apartments are over the store in the heart of the town and had the fire: spread it would have been a serious conflagration. Beaches Popular Sunday proved an unusually hot day and there was a rush to lakes and beaches. Several thousand cars were noted at the Outlet Beach which is especially fine this season. The water is low and the beach of hard sand is hundreds of yards wide. The beach was dotted with swimmers seeking relief from the heat.
The Sandbanks was also a popular spot with the cool breezes from the lake on both sides of the point. Members at Church Members of Prince Edward Masonic Lodge attended Divine Service at St. Andrew's Church Sunday morning. There was a very large turnout and the church was filled for the service. Rev. S. M. Scott, the pastor, gave an excellent discourse, taking "Fidelity." as his theme. The choir rendered an anthem, an arrangement of "The Lord is My Shepherd."
