Okay okay, so I know you’ve seen a few pieces about the reader being his lab assistant. But let me up you with- enemies to lovers.

The thing is- you two aren’t even in the same department. You’re literally competing with a man who is a prodigy at mechanics while you’re a ‘prodigy’ in biochemistry.

Like where’s the logic? How did this even start?

It started in school.

Well, at the academy per se since yes- Viktor is from the undercity and you happen to be from Piltover. A two completely different sides of the same coin.

Fate, deciding things were already a tad bit boring, decided to spice things up and made sure that you both were in the same classes. Every. Single. Yeah

Non-surprisingly, he was always at the top. Always the teacher’s favorite as he worked harder than any person you'd seen. Always sat alone as whispers about his origins got caught up in the academy like wildfires. It seemed like he didn't. As he always scribbled in his little journal and talked to teachers about his finding and junk.

So you never bother him, and he never bothers you.

But that might’ve been because you were at the bottom of your class.

A nightmare, as you would, exploding chemicals every chance you got.

There was a lab? Boom! You were in charge of cleaning up today? Boom! The teacher left the door open by accident, and when they realized their fatal mistake as they sprinted down the hallways?

You were the only person banned from labs. Or even walking into one as a chemical concoction spontaneously combusted the moment you walked in.

But that wasn't just it. You never took anything seriously. Always giggling with your friends, never doing your homework, doodling, and sleeping in class.

God, you were so infuriating! Lazy, privileged, snobs like you boiled Viktor's blood. He had to fight tooth and nail for everything he has now, meanwhile with a wave of a hand and extra cash, people like you were allowed here.

He sat next to you. The teacher telling him that since he was such an angel, maybe he could befriend, and help you…

It was a win-win in the teacher's eyes. Hitting two birds with one stone. Never did they think that their ‘worst’ and the top student would ever start competing.

Some say that you kicked Viktor's cane from him and started a war. Others say that he insulted your house.

But no. The truth was not as exciting. It was stupid even. You got into an argument over an answer on a pop quiz.

The first one you both ever failed.

The question was simple too. Well to you guys it was.

“So why did I get it wrong? If it’s unanswered, then it should have been correct, since it’s only a hypothesis.” Viktor scratched his head as he studied his paper more.

“Why don’t you ask Y/N that? Compare your answers over lunch”

Yeah, it turned into a screaming match. You both at each other's throats, as the teacher could only stare at you two in horror, realizing her mistake when her chalkboard was filled with scribbles and numbers even she couldn’t understand.

Sigh. Young love right? Well, you two have been at each other's throats ever since. Either with test grades or straight-up petty things.

You were working on something extraordinary. Being able to fuse some kind of liquid into the blood of a human and make the person so much stronger.

While Viktor was studying arcane magic and runes.

When I tell you he did a huge finger up to the door, I mean it was up there for at least a minute before Jayce walked in and he shot his finger down.

He was embarrassed. But so happy that he could finally prove himself better than you and all the entitled Piltover’s. To get his legacy.

But these runes- or whatever he calls them. The ones that will help hextech expand- make no sense. He’s been stumped in his lab for weeks, trying anything and everything- as Jayce does whatever.

Sky tries to help him, but she’s either pushed away for not understanding anything that he’s saying, or he's just so engrossed in his work that he’ll forget she’s there… Which stresses him out a bit.

There’s one person who matches his caliber that isn't Jayce- no

I know you’ve been stumped for a bit so I asked around if anyone were to give us good insight before we present this to Heimerdinger, and an old friend of yours volunteered!” Jayce paraded into the lab with a smile. The door behind him slightly ajar as the sound of clicks grew louder and louder, as someone gets closer and closer.

He can’t help but look to the side with a scowl, already knowing who it is.

He hasn’t seen or heard from you in years. Only seeing newspaper articles that mentioned your advancements in science and medicine.

As well as experimentation.

“They're not my friend Jayce. Not even close” his accent heavy as the door opened, revealing your Cheshire grin.

“Well, what can I say?” You mused, closing the large door behind you. “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer”

“Enemies? Viktor I-“

“Not exactly enemies, more like-“

“Childhood rivals?”

“We didn't even breath the same air when we were children”

“It’s a figure of speech Viktor” you were growing annoyed at by the second. And Jayce was more than surprised at how uncharacteristically his friend/ partner was acting.

His gut turned, the cup of empty coffee crumpling in Viktor’s hand, the sharp, muted thumping bringing his attention towards your hands, your nails rapidly clashing with the other.

..yeah about that gut feeling- it was good that he hasn’t been listening to it lately. Because it was school. All over again.

Bickering over theories, wanting to try your way- it exploding. Wanting to try it his way, it failing, of course.

Nothing was going well. All you both did were obscene ideas, exclude the other, and just compete. Not even bothering to hear the other talk.

And the looks you would give each other were just plain old annoying! When Viktor was hard at work tinkering, you would just stare at the man. Clicking your nails as you twirled a pencil.

Or how when you were running around, trying to get some kind of chemical out of your hair. Viktor would just watch, moving his chair with each way you ran as he just casually sipped from his coffee.

Jayce has had enough of it.

All the dancing around each other dangerously. The tense atmosphere. And the constant one-upping.

“You two are tearing our team apart!” He complained, hands on his hips as he stared down at the two of you. You were seated on one side of the couch, a pillow on your lap neatly, as Viktor was on a chair next to the couch.

“What team Jayce? All I’ve seen you do is progress reports and hook up with Mel.” You gave him a look over “And by hook up, I mean both ways”

You saw him falter, quick to snag more at the wonder boy. “It’s practically been me and ‘you know who' running trial, after trial, after retrial independently. Maybe we wouldn’t be in this scenario if we had an actual leader to guide us. Better yet.” You had jumped up from the couch, chest puffed as you pointed to yourself. “I’ll be the leader since you two wouldn't have come this far without me!”

“You wouldn’t even be here if it wasn't for us” Viktor retorted.

“Oh yeah? Well maybe neither of us would be here if wonder boy scrapped his deadly project. So stop acting like you’re the one who made this what it is.”

“With the work of me and Jayce, we both made it to what it is!”

“I bet you didn’t do anything though” You rolled your eyes.

Jayce was confused. It looked like two cats were going at it as he was stuck in the middle. He didn’t know what to think. About you tearing him down just to defend him to torment Viktor. Or Viktor finding fault in everything you said and rebutting it.

You were arguing non-sensitizes at this point!

“God, just get a room you two!” He groaned, not noticing how you both immediately paused as you were about to throw a pillow at his partner.

“Every time I come to do my little ‘progress reports’” he air quotes them as he peers at your shrinking form. “I can feel the tension from Heimerdinger’s office! That’s why I don't interrupt- cause it’s awkward with how involuntary it is!

“You’re both literal nerds who’ll be perfect for each other! Oh my god” he storms away, muttering about something you were too dazed to catch.

It was silent.

But Viktor was staring straight at his lap. Fist clutching his cane as a hand racked through his hair.

Shit. This was so awkward.

“…Your ideas aren’t all shit.” You mumbled, basking in the silence as he agreed, albeit quieter than you.

“Oh boy look at the time” you had laughed nervously, jumping over the couch as you briskly made your way to the door.

“Wait- wait a minute y/n hold on!” He got out of his chair as he had just had a breakthrough, he walked to you as fast as he could with his cane.

You don’t know what made you stop, but you were glued in place. The coolness of the doorknob warmed under your touch as you turned to him.

“Yes? Would you like something Viktor?”

There was an obvious blush on his face as he stood in front of you.

You were still holding the knob behind your back, ready to turn it case of an emergency retreat.

Viktor was searching his brain for something, anything to say. But every time he came up with scenarios, they all crashed and burned, like his hextech as he cursed himself for being better with machines than people.

“What, ever happened to us Viktor? How did we get to be… like this?” You gesture towards yourself as you finally look at him in his Carmel-laced eyes.

“We were so caught up in competition.”

You nodded in agreement.

“Well I, personally blame our professors from the academy. Who knows, if we never sat next to each other, maybe we’d be good now.” You joked, leaning on the door more as the knob dug into your lower back.

“Ehh, that’s plausible… but,” he said “I actually… mildly disliked you back then, even before we were seatmates” He chose his words carefully as you looked at him surprised.

“Really? Why me?” Your voice comically raised as he sighed. Knowing the ugly truth would probably make things a whole lot worse.

“Well… I thought you were a spoiled brat who got in just because. Since you never took your work seriously and were always blowing things up…”

You hummed in acknowledgment.

“Well, at least I could semi-balance a school-work-social life. You always shut everyone out, just working on experiments.”

“It’s not like I purposely tried to” He bit back. Hurt in his eyes as he recalled the dark days of school.

“As you know, I was from the undercity, and when people found out, they didn't take too kindly to me…” he said with a bitter taste on his tongue.

Even now, as he had finally made a name for himself, he was still frowned upon because he was from Zaun and wasn't purebred from the upper city like you and Jayce.

“Viktor, I never knew that. If you had told me I would have-“

“Pity me? Y/n, you know more than anyone that I hate being pitied.”

A small ‘yeah’ left you as you looked behind you to the door. Sighing, as you let your tongue loose.

“Actually, I'm not as great and powerful as I seem.”

“Viktor,” you pleaded as he shut his mouth. “Thanks” You muttered before looking past him.

“I was actually the runt of my family. Having 5 older siblings puts a lot of pressure on an 8-year-old. Especially since they were all great artisans and lawyers, doctors, authors- while all I could do was blow things up and recite the periodic table.

No matter what I did, I could never outrun their shadows…” your voice wavered as you flicked a piece of hair from your face.

"Did your parents not care for academics? scientific ones I mean" he corrected himself as his head tilted in your direction.

"Nope. I have no idea why either. Probably something about old farts in the past and just dismissed it altogether... but they did humor me with it-

And when I was able to compete with you, top of the class antisocial kid, I just saw you as my siblings. Saw you as something that I could overcome if I put my mind to it. To make my family proud…” you sighed, rubbing your face as you remembered all the faces your mother had made when you went home with another A+.

All the half-assed ‘good jobs’ from your dad as you showed him another winning chemistry set.

Or the unimpressed sneers from your siblings when you were banned from the lab.

“Well, did you?”

You shook your head with a tired smile. “I was never Heimerdinger's lab assistant”

“So you rebelled?”

“Indeed my smart friend. Started skipping classes, sleeping, not doing homework, purposely blowing things up. And then I found myself confronted with my oldest brother- the military general who was interested in my failed chemistry stuff. Said it could be used.”

You turned to him, a smile still on your face, scratching your nape, you jested “So it's all thanks to you that I’m here now, working with my brother on chemical compounds that don’t blow up as much”

“Much? Excuse me but I can most certainly hear explosions every time you walk”

“Huh? I’m pretty sure that every time you breathe, I can still hear the anguish cries of a coffee bean family!”

“There is nothing wrong with coffee”

“There is everything wrong with coffee! Try tea!”

“I appreciate the offer, but I have to decline, as tea doesn’t have the same effects I need”

“Same effects? What are you trying to do? Kill yourself?"

“Well, I am already dying. So why not speed up the process eh?”

“Viktor no!”

Let’s say that the worst mistake anyone could have made was letting you two become friends.

Okay, okay, I think I’ve talked about this in an ask before but I can’t find it 😭😭 but it’s okay, I love college aus, so I’ll talk about it again! Plus, now I’ve got more thoughts for more characters, so here we go

Levi — neuroscience and psychology of human behavior

He started out on track to do a bachelor of arts in psychology, but when they touched on the anatomy and biological parts of it during his first year lecture, he switched to a bachelor of science.

The focus is still psychology, but through a more clinical lens. Essentially, he gets the best of both worlds this way. He’s intuitive and analytical, so clinical and mental diagnosis is easy to dissect for him. He’s also canonically good at math, so the calculus and stats parts aren’t too bad, either.

This major also leaves him with a few options post-grad, which is a nice bonus for him. He’s likely going to medical school, but that’s not the only route open to him: law school, therapy, lab work, medicine and pharmacy, even teaching are all viable options without going to grad school.

Do not talk to him about Freud unless you wanna get punted off a building.

Be careful with him, because with a single glance he’s already got scarily accurate predictions about your parental and emotional attachment styles, your behavior in social settings, and the onset (or seemingly lack thereof) of your frontal lobe development.

He thinks he’s so smart making comments like, “I see those synaptic connections aren’t working so well for you today,” like mf come here let me lobotomize you and see how well your synaptic connects are working after that🙄

Eren — general health sciences

He’s interested in science and the discovery aspects of it, but picking a specific field of focus right now feels too final. He likes it this way, because his schedule and requirements are less restrictive, and he has more room to find out what really interests him.

He does best when he’s doing something he loves, so picking a major with a bunch of reqs that he couldn’t care less about would have sucked big time for him. It also would have affected his grades. There are still some classes he has to take that he’s not fond of (see: chemistry), but that’s to be expected. Science in general is cool to him and he hopes to make his own discovery some day, even if it’s microscopic.

He also plays a lot of sports, keeping his schedule flexible is important. The sports end up helping him excel academically, which is a nice bonus. Honestly, Eren uses his time at university to learn more about himself than anything, so having control and freedom to do what he likes the majority of the time was important to him. 

He uses his elective credits to take philosophy or history courses of his interest, or maybe even a course that you’re in just to spend time with you. He also uses you as a live model for his homework bye, congrats on being patient number one to him.

Armin — astronomy and physics

He’s still interested in marine biology, but unless he attended a school near a coast, or with a specialized integrated program for that, it’s unlikely he’d major in it during undergrad.

Space and ocean exploration aren’t all that different. Both are vast, largely unexplored domains that reel-in Armin’s interest for discovery. So, while studying astronomy, he still gets to study evolution and make his own predictions about what could be out there because there’s so much to know.

Physics comes with the territory of learning about planetary science, and he’s mathematically inclined, so it works out for him. Learning about the different physical properties of other planets and space masses is honestly pretty sick to him. Because math isn’t a struggle, he actually considered aeronautical engineering, but he didn’t want to be a part of the college to military pipeline; that is, he didn’t want any potential design of his to be weaponized. 

He still gets to study animal biology through his elective courses, and might even find a few focused on marine animals to satiate him. Plant and cell biology are also of interest to him, and are just further applications of his primary study anyway, so he’s got plenty of room to work with.

This boy is interning at NASA and still, with his whole chest out is like, “I don’t need to discover a new planet, you’re my whole world.” Armin, go check on the Mars rover or something please.

Mikasa — anthropology + minor in japanese language studies

Anthropology is virtually interdisciplinary in nature, and Mikasa is a pretty well rounded student, so she’s able to excel in a program like this. She gets to study history, science, cultural studies, and even a bit of art all at once.

She’s still debating between going to law school vs med school, so anthro this is a good in-betweener. She gets a taste of science through her anatomy and kin courses; and lots of practice with reading and dissecting texts through the historical and cultural lectures. So, when the time comes to decide, she’ll have some experience with both.

Don’t know whether it’s confirmed that she’s (part) Japanese or not, but either way I headcanon that she speaks/spoke some second language at home. She wanted to delve more into it, and courses were offered at the university so why not?

Cultural studies courses end up being her favorite. She likes learning about the history of people and their cultures, and it encourages her to learn more about her own family history and culture. It also propels her to apply for a study abroad opportunity, so she spends at least one semester doing an exchange program and absolutely loves it.

She would also encourage you to apply and go, too. You guys might not be in the same program, but if there’s an applicable program in the same country she’s going to, then she’d definitely want you to apply. Spending the semester away with you would be a dream come true.

Hange — bioengineering + minor in political philosophy and law

It’s almost self-sabotage to be in an engineering program and have a minor; the coursework for engineering alone is backbreaking, and bioengineering has the added weight of human intricacies, but of course Hange makes it possible. 

They’re nothing short of a genius, so of course they have time to work a completely unrelated minor into their schedule. It doesn’t surprise anyone that they go on to complete an MD-PhD after undergrad. Insane. 

Bioengineering is essentially the synthesis of chemical engineering and health sciences; Hange spends their time exploring biological sciences and applies the engineering aspects of their coursework to their understanding of (and interest in creating) medicine. Truly a one of a kind mind. 

They also have an interest in philosophy and justice, so when they found out they only needed a measly nine or ten courses to minor in, they went for it, of course. In honesty, they don’t find the studies all that opposing: both law making and medicine making both have some kind of philosophy or method to them in their eyes. 

Hange has... little to no free time pls. They don’t mind it, because they love their coursework, but this means you are essentially ducking into their labs or scrambling to find them in-between their classes during your time in undergrad. They appreciate every second spent with you tho, and will gladly rope you into long discussions about their work. 

Jean — biochemistry + minor in art sustainability

He was undeclared his first year, and took a little bit of everything: art, science, history, anthropology, english. Basically, anything that fit into his schedule. It was hard for him to pick one thing—he liked the science and lab applications of STEM courses, but not the math; and the obvious painting and creativity of art, but hated the pretentious air about art history.

What he wants to do is make a difference, which is how he ends up knowing that he wants to go to med school after, so he picks a science-heavy major, but uses his elective spaces to take art courses. When he mixes the two, he ends up on sustainability—and the complexities about it that are applicable to both science and art are what really reels him in.

Interdisciplinary studies end up being his forte. He can approach sustainability from a science perspective which impacts his art style and materials; and tuning into his creative side allows him to think about science not just from a purely clinical perspective, but from a human one, too—patients are people after all.

He believes that everything is connected somehow, even things as seemingly opposite as art and biochemistry. And he works towards finding the unique intersection where everything overlaps. His studies are pretty cool, and he’s very passionate about them, so ask him about it 😌

The art he makes is pretty sick, too, and often commentary about science; he’s proving they’re not so opposite. You also heavily influence his studies in both areas: caring about you so much inspires him to take the healthcare focus seriously, and your very nature is inspiration to his art. 

Sasha — nursing

She’s friendly and good at working with people, so nursing was an easy choice for her. She accredits most of her motivation to being around her younger family members, and learns that she finds a simple kind of joy in helping to take care of others.

She struggles a bit her first year when it’s mostly all grades and standardized testing, but when she starts getting clinical experience and working in the hospital on campus, things round out for her.

Yeah he’s in a book club and he dog-ears his books. What about it. They’re doing poetry this month and Reiner actually likes Edgar Allen Poe. Who said jocks can’t be sentimental.

He also reads a lot outside of his classes, and has a soft spot for coming of age stories. He usually empathizes with the main character somehow. His ideal weekend plans after a week of grueling games and essays is taking a long, relaxing shower at your place, while you both share a bottle of wine, and maybe even get you to read a chapter or two of his current book out loud to him.

Annie — clinical psychology/neuroscience

Almost scarily analytical and methodic, so this major was calling her name. Localizing brain legions is… insanely intuitive to her it’s incredible. She’ll be an insanely impressive doctor someday, even if she doesn’t end up working with patients directly. 

She doesn’t care too much for the more philosophical/reading heavy parts of psychology. Even experiments and research closer to the social end of the spectrum aren’t all that interesting to her; but the brain science behind it it.

Nobody should be good at cellular biology. Nobody should be able to ace cell bio and neuro and calc and work towards their thesis proposal in the same semester, but Annie proves it’s possible.

Ends up working in one of her professor’s labs by her junior year. She was offered three TA positions working with first year students, but she swiftly turned them down. Teaching isn’t her thing.

I have faced not only normal educational obstacles from being a STEM major, but I also have faced lots of racial and gender issues while being a woman of color, specifically Black, in STEM. I love my institution, GO BEACH! However, I just want to shed light on my experience in case other people are experiencing similar things to let them know that you’re not alone. First, lets start with some personal background info so you don’t think I’m some random person.

Back in my day...

It honestly all started when I was younger. Growing up, I’ve always been interested in science and it has always been something I’ve been passionate about. With that, came the usual snarky comments from other elementary/middle/high school students of being a nerd, a geek, the whole package of annoying name calling. My parents always reminded me that being interested in chemistry, biology, and the like wasn’t a bad thing! But your parents are SUPPOSED to tell you that, so it never really sank in or made me feel any more comfortable with my natural interests.

Later on in high school, I actually started realizing that being a nerd is really f***ing awesome because I finally got to take more interesting classes, like Intro to Engineering and Design, as well as AP Science courses. It was my dream come true! College apps came around and I decided to attend Cal State Long Beach as ChemE. One of the main things that attracted me to CSULB was the idea of how diverse they were and how much they talked about diversity and having “no barriers”; it was the only campus where I genuinely saw all races and ethnicities, and there were more than just the usual two Black people I saw on other campus: me and my reflection. It felt like the shoe was a perfect fit. I, Cinderella, had found her glass slipper.

Oh NO!

But, my first day of classes came. And it all came crumbling down. Because I realized, that’s all it was: just talk about diversity and “no barriers”.

Now, although I had been raised in predominantly white areas where I was the (literal) black sheep, coming to college really amplified my black sheep-ness. I could count how many woman were in my classes on my hands, and an even smaller amount were women of color.

But Alexi, you were in General Ed classes, there had to be more women. Actually, not really. The way things are designed here is that my Engineering pre-reqs count for almost all of my GE’s except English and art. So, there were literally no more than 10 woman of color in all of my classes.

I started experiencing doubts once guys in my lab sections would take over when I would be working on the experiment and some would even erase my all of my work even though it was right. That particular scenario happened in a coding lab that I had to do so you can only imagine how infuriated I was. When I would have discussions with other peers (mainly cis white men), I felt like I couldn’t express my issues and concerns, especially with their passive sexist comments. On a darker note, I have been called the N word with the hard r in the middle of a class discussion, I have been told I am only at my institution due to affirmative action, and I have also had PROFESSORS tell me that I can’t do this because of slight hiccups I’ve had along the way. 

And hearing those things my freshman year of college almost broke me. All this money I had spent to come and all the loans I had taken out to get this education I had been dreaming of, all the sacrifices I had made to do well on exams and make ends meet, all of the times my friends got to go home and see their family while I was stuck in the dorms basically by myself, were being discounted because of who I was. And I had never truly experienced that until college. Being Black already makes me stand out in a plethora of situations to say the least, and mixing that with being a woman IN STEM ?? That’s the icing on the cake, man. I get racist comments, I get sexist comments. I just get the beauty of it all.

The Happy Ending You All Want To See

But, I didn’t let all those things break me. I had to remember that I was accepted on merit from high school and the fact that I showed promise, motivation, and hard work. Yeah, I suck at math which is terrible for an engineering major because math is the base for lots of shit. Yeah, I need a little extra help with my Physics homework sometimes. But that doesn’t make me any less capable than the next guy. Due to this shock, I actually had to re-enter therapy at school because I was so close to quitting SO MANY TIMES during my freshman year. I needed that reassurance that I genuinely did belong because it sure as hell didn’t feel like it. I mean, my parents were telling me I belonged and that I was doing great, but how could my own peers not accept me when we’re all working towards the same goal?

Freshman year took a lot out of me, but it didn’t take me out. Here I am, going into my 3rd year of ChemE, in a nationally recognized Scholars program to help me get to my PhD, getting over $7k in scholarships, and working an internship with almost no upper division classes under my belt.

I just want to finish this post by saying: you belong where you’re at. Don’t listen to people’s doubts. Keep striving for greatness. And this goes for all majors, all women of color, all walks of life. Keep going. You belong and you are welcome here. And sometimes that “diversity” card will pay off when you apply for scholarships, internships, etc.

Stanford had been wandering back and forth between the main cabin and the engine room for nearly half the day. He’d heard some rifling of papers and the soft ‘thump’ of books being shifted and re-shelved. He also suspected Sixer had send a few texts out to Dipper; the telltale clicks of Ford’s untrimmed nails on the touch screen and quiet cursing as he struggled with the device. His Sixer would always be more comfortable with analogue medium, but Stan figured that slow adjustment to recent technology was due to Ford’s experience with alien technology. It was like trying to get a teen from today with smartphones and the internet to work and program an IBM 7030 supercomputer. Heck, he and Sixer had grown up during the golden age of super computers the size of whole rooms and he doubted either one of them could program one. Although, Ford had built an interdimensional gateway and Stan had built and programed an interdimensional biomolecular scanner, but…eh, it didn’t matter if the analogy worked exactly. Sixer would get the hang of texting eventually.

What bothered Stan now was the fact that Ford had been, not avoiding him exactly, but rather making an effort to be elsewhere. Stan wanted to head back into town and get the twins some presents, maybe even send them out if they could, but Sixer was too wrapped up in his current project. He was trying very, very hard not to let his worry tap into Sixer’s mind, and he was letting paranoia set in over Stanford’s knowledge of his ‘condition’. Sixer was fine. He hadn’t noticed anything. Stan had come up with reasonably credible excuses for his slip-ups. He was in the clear…right? Stanford was even warm and open that morning and showed no signs that he thought that an evil demonic dream triangle had been reborn as his brother and said brother had regained all his memories. If Stanford was acting normal, then it was all good…maybe. Stan knew he should have left well enough alone.

Sixer had had another nightmare. Stan had woken up to a damp shirt collar and Sixer reaching across the center table to wring his hands in Stan’s shirt. They’d been at sea for months, and sure Sixer had been struck by nightmares before, but he’d not actively reached out to Stan before. Stan was usually the one to initiate comfort. What had gotten Sixer worked up this time?

Stan had run his fingers over Ford’s, slowly urging him to let go so Stan could roll over. His eyes were met with Ford’s brow, beaded with cold sweat and eye’s clenched tight. He really shouldn’t risk it so soon, influencing his brother’s dreams, but his heart ached and Ford was unconsciously seeking comfort. He raised his hand, thumb faintly flickering blue and rubbed tiny circles beside Ford’s eye. Stan felt his eyes shift before being pulled into Ford’ dreams.

Bill…again. It usually was when Ford divulged the topic of his night terrors to Stan. Before it was reasonable, expected, and matched Stan’s own concerns. Now it was just wearisome and a bit annoying, if not troublesome now that Stan remembered. Now that he was slowly regaining his abilities. For now, he would deal with Ford’s fears and deal with the rest when it came; it really was physically taxing to do this in human form.

He Bill was again taunting Ford, reminding him of their deal, of how it had never been officially severed. It had as soon as Ford had stopped work-…wait. Had it? To break a deal, either partner had to retract their promise; He had supplied Stanford with the knowledge his brother craved and in return, Sixer had tried to build a portal. Succeeded in building. Sixer had succeeded and only after he realized where the portal opened to (after it was open) did he shut it down and make efforts to keep Stan Bill from entering his mind. Their deal, their bond, had never been revoked. Well, Shit. This put a wrench in the cogs. Damnit.

Stan let his dreamscape projection shift into the younger image that Ford’s mind designated and wandered into the wheat field. By the time he got to Sixer’s side, dreamBill had taken on his Bipper form (He didn’t care what Shooting Star said, it was a terrible name. It made it sound like they were a Power Couple), and Ford was in pleading and desperate tears. Now Ford’s actions made sense. Stan used his power to dispel Bipper the same way he had lost control before, by pulling Ford’s mental Mabel out and having her tickle the fiend into submitting. Looking back on it now, it was ingenious to use Dipper’s weakness against him, if a bit humiliating. The Bipper manifestation laughed himself into a puff of smoke and Stan drew out Ford’s inner Dipper to take his place.

Ford was exuberant. “KIDS!” He embraced the two siblings in a bone crushing embrace. “Oh, God, Thank you. Shhhh, it’s ok. I’ve got you. He’s gone now.” Ford rocked the two back and forth and the dream siblings responded the way Ford expected them to; they cried and clung back. Stan took the last few steps to reach them and laid a hand down on Sixer’s head, ruffling his hair. “You alright there, Poindexter?”

Sixer turned his head up to look at Stan, face still mended from the last time he was here, and took a sigh of relief. When Sixer didn’t say anything, just held the kids and smiled up at Stan. “You wanna take the kids and play on the swings, or give’em a tour o’ the Stan O’War?” He really didn’t know what to do here. Ford let go of the kids and stood, turning to face Stan. The siblings took each of Ford’s hands in theirs. “I think….that’s a great idea.” Ford’s face seemed to melt and lose all trace of fear or worry. “Well, let’s get to it.”

Stan stayed in Ford’s dream so long, he himself fell asleep, consciousness pulling back into his body just before falling into REM sleep. He’d woken up to a cup of coffee being held under his nose and Sixer smirking at him.      

They’d gone through the treasure haul after a few more cups of coffee each to help an embarrassing set of hangovers. The coins were sorted into piles based on metal type and likely country of origin; Stan had pulled up a book on Ford’s tablet on old coins that had helped and subtly showed Ford how to use the app. A number of coins were set in a bowl of distilled vinegar to get them clean. The gems were sorted by type, size and cut ; Stan kept some gems for himself and the kids: a pink rough stone that Ford identified as Tugtupite for Mable, a light blue and white swirl stone that reminded Stan of the color of the ocean near shore for Dipper (Ford called it Larimar), and a piece of ‘Fool’s Gold” for himself (he was all too familiar with it, having sold it in the Mystery Shack as real gold a few times). He urged Sixer to pick one out, finally choosing a piece of snowflake obsidian that had been shaped into a blade point. Stan also snagged a piece of rhodonite while Ford wasn’t looking. The rest were put in a pile to be dealt with in experimentation, gifts or be sold. Stan swiped a ring with two interlocking triangles. He also pretended not to see Ford wrap a leather band with a compass (Vegvisir, a symbol to provide guidance to wayward souls, Stan’s inner Nerd provided) around his left wrist and conveniently forget to take it off. There were a few other pendants with various symbols that Ford didn’t recognize and Stan refused to recognize and were set aside for later study. The scrolls were gathered and quickly brought to the top cabin with the rest of Stanford’s research material. And that was the last Stan saw of Ford, except for the occasional trip down to the engine room where Ford stored his more volatile experiments.

And that was it. Now here Stan was, sitting in the galley texting back and forth with Mabel about what they wanted for Christmas and assuring her that he and his brother didn’t need presents (and not being able to give her an address to send it to anyway). And Ford was furtively zipping back and forth between the cabin and the engine room, trailing papers, and rank odors with him.  

Stanford’s actions were normal, (well normal for Stanford, they were bordering on unhinged for other people) so everything was fine. He just need to play the part of lovable and eccentric con man until he could adjust to his new memories. He could do that. He’d been a con man his whole existence, it was his bread and butter. However, he had never had to beat down an oncoming existential crisis that he could not deal with in present company.

What was even more alarming, was Mable had picked up on his suspicious knowledge. Mabel had been working on some holiday chemistry homework  and was having difficulty figuring out how to balance chemical equations and Dipper was texting Ford.

I wanna ask Grunkle Ford how to do it, but Dipper has been texting him for like 10 whole hours about science.

It was two hours until dinner when Ford came down and approached Stan. Stan, meanwhile, had kept himself busy by flipping through several different online articles on dream psychology and mental manipulation while having an Arctic Fishing article open in case Ford walked too close.

Ford looked exhausted, and a bit crazed, like he’d been obsessing over something. However, as soon as he noticed Stan looking, his demeanor changed, perked, and nearly split his face with a disingenuous grin. Stan did his best not to be offended by his brother hiding things. Ford was an inherently closeted person; wasn’t the whole reason everything came crashing down around them was Stanford’s inability to place his trust in others? He’d been trying, so, so hard, Stan wasn’t expecting Ford to share everything.

And, he would be a hypocrite if he said there should be no secrets between them. Ford wasn’t the only one hiding behind a veil of charm.  

“How are you feeling about heading out for dinner tonight? We’ve got a few more days before we need to renew our tourist visas.” Stan blinked at his own choice of words. He had become acutely aware that his inner voice and speaking voice no longer mimicked one another. He had tried to continue his habit of running words together and using slang; He’d let his accent slip. Stan wanted to blame it on the fact that he hadn’t spoken much that day. It sounded like he was trying to convince himself. The truth was, it was exhausting, needing to be careful about his pronunciations, how much knowledge he had (he’d already let some things slip), and how much he was aware of the things around him.

Ford, however, didn’t respond, either waving it off or just not taking the time to care. All he did was collect the envelope of local currency from the drawer by the stairs, and smiled at Stan. “Bistro?” Stan nodded, “Sure.”

Ford looked…soft. Just…soft. Stan was overwhelmed by the desire to hug his brother, to bury his face in the crook of Sixer’s neck and…and what? His gums tingled. He wished he still had real teeth.

Stan blinked his mind clear and watched Ford take the steps to the main cabin. He joined Ford on deck not to long after, choosing to throw on his red and gold leaf Hawaiian shirt under his trench coat as an excuse for dawdling. It was happening again.

An hour and a half later they were walking along the boardwalk, a bit reminiscent of the one in Glass Shard Beach, although the chill November air and soft snow meant everything was closed for the season. They’d eaten at a tiny little diner about a seven-minute taxi ride from the docks. The interior had been done up in brick and arches and looked like and old subway tunnel system. They served soul food, and Stan felt his mouth water at the broasted chicken while Ford hummed with delight at baked ziti. Greasy though his meal was, Stan liked at every morsel. They had shared a fudge lava cake for desert. No alcohol this time; they’d learned their lesson.

Ford had suggested they walk back to the docks, ‘to work-off their dinner’ as the saying goes, but Stan could sense Ford was trying to ease back into walking. They were both still sore from overexerting themselves; part of the reason they’d indulged the night before, to numb the pain. Ford had developed a multicolored bruise on his abdomen, but the swelling in his hand had gone down enough that he could use it, albeit still weak. Stan hesitated only a few moments before interlacing his fingers with Ford’s, protecting it, keeping it.

Damnit! It was starting again. He was losing control of his thoughts; impulses creeping in to take over his mind and his new mental state not being one that complied with ignoring those impulses. Not that he ever had it easy denying his impulses, but when he had been just half of who he is, it had been somewhat easier. There had also been consequences then; not so much in the Nightmare Realm.

They walked hand in hand, slowly, taking their time and easing their muscles back into working normally. Stan supporting his brother only occasionally on the way back, prompting them to take it slower, take in the sights, and just be for a bit. It seemed to do them both good. They laughed and pointed at things, snapping pictures, and purchasing some souvenirs for the kids; a book on Nordic culture for Dipper (Ford had decided to add his own notes before sending it off), and a stuffed Puffin for Mabel (Stan thought the blue bow tied around its neck added to its appeal).

When they reached the boardwalk, it had started to snow. Soft, tiny flakes floating down and catching the light from the streetlights and the setting sun. The sky was sparkling. Ford had let go of his hand and before he had even fully turned to see why, Ford had hurled some snow that had collected on the dock railing at his face. It wasn’t much, the fresh stuff had only just started to fall and anything older having frozen solid and made for dangerous horseplay. It was still enough for Stan to reach out and snag Ford by his hood and yank him into a noogie. Not a hard one, just a hard ruffling of his hair and trapping Ford’s head under his arm. “Ow, hey! Stan, let go!”

Stan ran his fingers through Ford’s hair and over his scalp a few more times before letting go, chuckling though a playful sneer. Ford rubbed his head softly, mouth twisted between a frown and a smirk. Ford lightly pushed at his shoulder before taking his hand again.

Stan missed this. He’d missed his brother, of course, but these simple little things, these happy moments where nothing was wrong, nothing was worrying them, he’d missed these the most. Just sharing time, sharing space. They were bother here, both happy, healthy, and doing wat they always dreamed. Stan felt the need to hug his brother once again, to feel Ford’s body pressed against his, feel the pulse under his fingers and just know that Ford was there. But he resisted, mind churning at the very idea that he would ignore an impulse again.

They stopped in front of a close skeet ball game, teasing each other about playing it for hours and competing for the high score. Stan had gifted a red frog (he thought) with a black bowtie and grey shorts to Ford that had sat at the food of the top bunk for a few years (until it got pushed off by Ford’s ginormous pile of books, then it sat on the floor as a guard for Fort Stan).

Ford just laughed at remembering the hideous thing, reveling that it had given him nightmares and that was why he kicked the damn thing off. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner, I would’a won you something else!” Stan gasped though laughter. Ford smiled sadly, “I didn’t want to hurt your feelings. You were so excited the day you brought it home.”

Stan just punched Ford’s arm, playfully, and leaned against the railing, back to the water and facing his brother. Ford mimicked him, arms crossed over the rail, to watch the waves crash against the frozen beach. The snow had picked up some and fat snowflake clusters tangled in Ford’s hair, making him look mystical…otherworldly.    

He loved his brother’s face. He was acutely cognizant that they, as twins, had similar facial features. But they were fraternal twins, not identical, and Stanford just…wore it better. Stan played it like he was the better-looking twin, but he knew it was just show; Ford could look marvelous without even trying. It really hadn’t helped that Ford could kill the ‘sexy librarian’ look with his sweater vests and open collar button-downs. His brother always assumed that he was stigmatized by his abnormality in high school. Stan was reluctant to say the opposite was true. Ford was a magnet for people, he was just too oblivious when people flirted with him that he’d never noticed. His obsession with Cathy Crenshaw had acted against him, making him blind to all other offers; including mine.

Stan was willing to admit that he had flirted with his brother, at first inadvertently as he was a natural flirt and did it without thinking, but then he’d done it with intention. Ford looked good. Even when he was covered in sweat and sand from the beach and sunburnt in mismatched splotches. Even when sleep deprived and had avoided showering for days. Even when he had drunk way too much coffee and was bleeding from his right eye. Even when he had been filled with rage and fear, and helpless and even when the electricity had made him lose control of his bowels (Stan Bill had taken care of that though).

Ford’s face was bright, reflecting the last of the sun’s rays. Being outdoors had done wonders for his complexion. His face was full of color, his cheeks soft, and his chin only slightly dark with hair beneath the skin. Stan wanted to bite him. Bite that smooth and baby soft beside his eye. He wanted to pinch Fords ears, to tug on the lobes and stretch them out. He wanted needed to leave bite marks all along Ford’s face and body. To grab at Ford’s hips and tear into his abdomen, Stan was certain he could extend his jaw far enough to get it in one bite. He needed to rip off Sixer’s extra finger’s and string them around his neck to wear as a keepsake. He wanted to rip IQ’s head off and just nuzzle at his cute brother’s face.

Stan could feel the wood fracturing under his hand with how tight he had been gripping the railing. His mind baulked and he tried desperately to not choke on a rush of bile. He failed. He leaned far over and away from Ford while he coughed up stomach acid and a bit of dinner. NO!

Ford was at his side in an instant, hand rubbing his back and trying to shush Stan’s pained groans, saying “I told you to eat something light. Grease increases the production of stomach acid and without the proper amount of…” Stan sopped listening. He knew that. Just like he knew that the chicken hadn’t done this to him. No, it was your own fucked up head that made you up-chuck. He should be lucky it was just acid reflux and not his whole dinner. That would be embarrassing; stupid American tourist blows chunks off Reykjavik boardwalk, yeah that would go well.

His throat burned and he felt himself wheezing when he tried to catch his breath. He’d inhaled some. Though the pain was distracting him from the…thoughts he’d had. It seared, but he’d take it over the alternative. He was done with that! No more violent thoughts. No more freakish clinginess. No more biting fantasies. It didn’t matter if it was the brain’s way of dealing with over affection (human brains were fucked up and inefficient at storing and processing data anyway).

Ford rubbed at his back again, frowning, and taking Stan by the hand again. “Let’s head back, it’s late. And we can get these presents wrapped and in the mail tomorrow afternoon.” Ford readjusted the backpack that contained the niblings’ presents. Stan just followed, grumbling about being old to keep his brain occupied.

It wasn’t far from the boardwalk to the fishing dock, maybe twenty minutes’ walk at a brisk pace, thirty-five at their pace. They made it just as the last rays of sunlight melted away below the horizon.

Stan pulled out a bottle of water to ease the pain in his throat as Ford unpacked, placing the book upstairs to add to later. He entered the galley as Stan started convulsing, coughing and shaking to pull in a breath. Ford just smacked Stan on the back several times as Stan leaned over the sink.

“You really need to start thinking about your health. I’ve seen you eat, Stan. No amount of exercise on a boat is going to magically make up for a lifetime of poor eating habits.” Stan just groused. He knew he wasn’t ‘healthy’ by any doctor’s standards, but he was far healthier than he had been in years, both physically and mentally. Well sorta. So what if he indulged in fried foods when they made port. And ate brown meat…and…fine.

Stan felt another rise of bile, but kept it down with a groan.

“Alight, Sixer, but I’m gonna make you a deal. I start eating healthy and stop eating that ‘disgusting brown meat’ if you,” he jabbed at Ford’s chest with a finger, “start being more careful when we go out. That side of yours is still bruised and you still can’t grip anything with your hand.”

Ford looked annoyed and weary. But after a moment, he sighed and nodded. “Fine.” Stan grinned.      

Stan reached out, palm open and fingers splayed to shake Ford’s hand. The universal gesture for making a deal. His hand wreathed in blue flame

His grin dropped from his face, replaced with horror as he pulled his hand away and shook it rapidly, putting the fire seal out. He turned to Ford, trepidation marring his face, his eyes wide, mouth slightly agape, a nervous laugh escaping his throat.

Ford looked shell shocked.

Fuck.
