Oil Majors Flirt With Electricity. (Wall Street Journal)
Excerpt from this Wall Street Journal story:
Artificial intelligence has suddenly made electricity a hot commodity. No wonder major oil companies want a piece of it.
Both Exxon Mobil XOM -0.76%decrease; red down pointing triangle and Chevron CVX -2.00%decrease; red down pointing triangle said last month that they are talking to potential data-center customers on deals to supply natural-gas-fired power paired with carbon-capture technology. Exxon is working on a power-plant design with at least 1.5 gigawatts of capacity—enough to power more than a million homes. TotalEnergies TTE -0.93%decrease; red down pointing triangle, which has a power business, last year bought 1.5 GW of natural-gas-fired power plants near Dallas and Houston in Texas.
Exxon and Chevron have shied away from the wind and solar business for good reason: They have no experience in it and the expected returns are too low. But gas-fired power seems like a natural fit.
Major oil companies have plenty of experience in building and operating natural-gas-fired power plants to support their own energy-intensive operations, such as refining, natural-gas liquefaction and petrochemicals. Exxon said in its latest corporate update that it has developed 5.5 GW worth of power projects since 2001. Major oil companies might, in some cases, have more recent experience building power plants than large independent power producers: Many of them haven’t built power plants from scratch since the early 2000s, notes Hugh Wynne, co-head of utilities and renewable energy research at SSR.
Major oil companies also are able to move fast—something tech giants value. They can site power plants near the source of fuel—near their own oil and gas fields—and sell electricity directly to data centers without needing to connect to the grid. And oil companies have lots of experience building off-grid power to support operations in far-flung places. That means they can bypass the lengthy process of connecting to the grid or building out a pipeline. In fact, it would be a natural fit for places with a lack of pipeline capacity—such as the Waha hub in Texas—where natural-gas prices often turn negative.
Adding the ability to capture the carbon and bury it could command an extra premium, though the technology hasn’t yet been proven at scale. There are generous subsidies for the technology under the Inflation Reduction Act. Carbon-capture technology has been used with some success at coal-fired power plants, but it hasn’t been deployed at a commercial scale for natural-gas-fired power plants, according to Wynne of SSR.

After reviewing over 1,000 charts, I have found some good setups for the week. These were selected and should be viewed in the context of the broad Market Macro picture reviewed Friday which with the FOMC meeting in the books, equity markets showed some profit taking and a drift slightly lower.
Elsewhere look for Gold to continue its uptrend while Crude Oil joins it with a short term trend higher. The US Dollar Index continues a short term move to the downside at 3 year lows while US Treasuries consolidate in their downtrend. The Shanghai Composite looks to continue in consolidation while Emerging Markets may be stalled in their break to the upside.
The Volatility Index looks to continue in the normal range making life easier for equity markets to the upside. Their charts show short term strength on the longer timeframe with possible digestion in the shorter timeframes. The IWM continues to lag the SPY and QQQ in recovery in price. The classic “V” recovery continues to build in all 3 Index ETFs as the SPY and QQQ hold just shy of their all-time highs but with possible short term pauses. Use this information as you prepare for the coming week and trad’em well.

I started by looking at the main company website which is at http://www.chevron.com/ I was interested to find out how the company chooses to present itself and so I looked under the tab “About Chevron” which was on the top left of the screen. There was a short statement: “At Chevron, we are relentlessly focused on producing safe, reliable energy now and for the future. How are we doing it? By applying the energy we have most in abundance Human energy.” This was not what I expected, because I know already that the main product area is fossil fuels like oil and gas, and I did not expect it to focus on its people. On other tabs there was information on the manufacturing side of things, and distribution through pipelines, shipping and gas stations. The company profile section provided the most factual information such as the founding date in 1879, in an area near Los Angeles, California. The global workforce is about 60,000 employeees and there are another 4,000 service station employees who are linked to the main company. Its production figures are a little out of date, quoting 2.7 million barrels of net oil-equivalent production per day. From its location in California the company expanded in the 1920s to ventures in the Philippines, Alaska and Colombia in the quest for oil. In the 1930s they worked in Saudi Arabia and then from the 1940s through the 1970s they built pipelines to transport the oil from their wells. In 2001 the company merged with Texaco to become the second largest U.S. based energy company. The future ventures of the company focus on the Gulf of Mexico and Kazakhstan. There is a recognition that all kinds of energy are going to be needed in the future, not just oil and gas, and so I was pleased to note that a lot of money is being invested in research. This is an area that I would be interested in working for. The company is bound to present itself in the best possible light and so I looked next for external sources that would give more neutral information. The website www.business.com/directory/ provided a link to the Chevron company website that I had just been looking at, and it also had a link to the Wall Street Journal share prices for Chevron. This is the second source that I used. It gives an up to date snapshot of the company’s performance on the markets and I noted that the share price over the last 12 months had risen: Chevron stock prices, year to 1/14/11 Source: http://online.wsj.com/quotes/main.html?type=djn&symbol=CVX As my third source I followed the course instructions to look at the Hoovers business information page and there I found a list of subsidiaries and locations for the Chevron company. I was interested to note that Chevron U.S.A. which manages the US side of the business has its headquarters in San Ramon, California. The offices and research areas are not located in the same place as the oil and gas fields. I was reassured by my research on the company because I found its home web pages to be professional and positive. The market trend over a year is positive, with share prices rising despite the increasing costs of finding oil resources as older fields are getting used up. The company has been involved in mergers, and shows flexibility in its links with other countries, always looking for new sources of raw material. I could see also that there were areas of the business outside pure manufacturing, like the development of additives and various kinds of research Read the full article

Drone strike hits Chevron, Exxon oil exports via Russia
A drone strike has hit a pumping station on a oil pipeline in Russia, reducing flows from Kazakhstan to world markets pumped by Western firms including Chevron CVX and Exxon Mobil XOM, its operator said on Monday.
Tumblr media
The strike comes a day before U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Saudi Arabia for talks on ending the war in Ukraine.
The operator, the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC), said drones struck the Kropotkinskaya station in the southern Krasnodar region, where work was halted to investigate the damage.
It said seven drones were involved in the strike, which it called an act of terrorism. It did not specify that the drones had come from Ukraine.
However, an official at Ukraine’s SBU security service said that Kyiv had hit the pumping station and nearby Ilsky oil refinery using drones.
