Happy 37th Birthday, Scottish actor Paul Brannigan, born September 14th 1986 in Glasgow.

Paul was brought up in the working-class East End are of Glasgow around Barrowfield. Both of his parents were long-term drug addicts and much of his youth was spent amidst gang violence and petty crime. It isn't surprising with this background that Brannigan was a gang member in Glasgow, expelled from school at 14 he served time in a Young offenders institution.

I hope nobody starts condemning Brannigan for this, he has got his life together and left that behind him, it was tough for him growing up, and found this from him in an interview in 2012;

"It was tough growing up, and there were moments where I just wanted to crawl away and die. I slashed my wrist with a mirror after a fight with my dad and was just like: fuck it, man, fuck it. But it's not a sob story. I'm quite sensible; I don't get myself too close or let my emotions go. You can get hurt and then you feel your life is destroyed."

In jail, he taught himself to read via a diet of dictionaries and Newsnight , he said it wasn't for the news or the politics but to listen to the way they speak, then find out what the fancy words mean, then put sentences together and learn to become articulate.

On release he was full of good intentions, but still "a bit of a lad, doing daft things". The scar on his face was the result of a fight with his brother. He lost a job at a community centre and it looked bleak for him, however he re-prioritised after his son, Leon, was born.

He was spotted by scriptwriter Paul Laverty at the Strathclyde police's Violence Reduction Unit, where he taught four hours of football a week. He was sceptical initially, skipped auditions, and it was only the pressure of repaying a Christmas loan that meant he finally responded to Laverty's rallying phone calls. "It probably saved my life, to be honest. I'd nowhere to turn, got a kid; who knows what I'd have done for money."

I could go on and post a lot of things that Paul has done wrong on his life, but I could also say many things about my own life that I have done wrong, we all make mistakes and we have to live with them.

Christmas at the Tech, 1912-1963 - Part 1: Students’ Christmas Ball and Children’s Christmas Party

With Christmas time approaching and most of Strathclyde’s students and staff back on campus following the pandemic, many in-person celebrations and festive activities are being planned for the first time in several years. This series of three blog posts looks back at some of the Christmas activities associated with Strathclyde’s antecedent institution, the Royal Technical College (RTC), renamed in 1956 as the Royal College of Science and Technology (RCST) and popularly known as ‘the Tech’. We begin by considering two of the most eagerly anticipated events of all: the students’ Christmas Ball and the Children’s Christmas Party.

Christmas Ball

Organised annually by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), the Christmas Ball was a major event in the RTC and RCST social calendar and provided a welcome opportunity for students to let their hair down following the end of term exams. To encourage ticket sales, the SRC’s Dance Committee publicised the Ball in the student magazine, The Mask, and in the student newspaper, the Telegraph. The advertisement below was placed in the December 1938 issue of The Mask (reference: OJD/1/2/76).

The Dance Committee (later the Entertainments Committee) invested considerable time and effort to ensure the Ball’s success. In the early years, a hotel in central Glasgow would be booked to host the event: in 1926, for example, the Christmas Dance took place at the Grand Hotel, and in 1930 and 1931 the venue was the Ca’ D’Oro Ballroom. By the 1940s, however, the Christmas Ball generally took place in the RTC’s own Assembly Hall, which doubled as the Exam Hall. The new Student Union building in John Street, which was opened in 1959, later provided appropriate facilities for hosting the Ball and similar functions.

When the Ball was held on campus, the Committee had the unenviable task of decorating the hall for the occasion. In 1944, the RTC’s Navigation Department loaned them some flags for this purpose, ‘and it was [also] decided that the members of the Dance committee should look around the local shops for streamers etc’.[1] In subsequent decades, as the numbers of students studying at the RTC expanded, more resources were available and the new Union building offered increased space and scope for decorations, the Committee’s plans became more ambitious. The early 1960s saw the Christmas Ball organised according to a different theme each year, ranging from ‘Arctic Aurora’ (1960) and ‘Tropical Bally-Ho!’ (1961) to ‘Neptune’s Nocturnals’ (1962: programme pictured below, reference OJA/18/2/3) and ‘Black Friday’ (1963).

Designing and constructing props and decorations for a themed event demanded specific skills for which the Committee turned to members of the Architecture and Building Society, the RCST’s club for architecture students.[2] As the Committee minutes show, the ‘Architects’ club’ chose the theme for the Ball from a shortlist of suggestions supplied to them by the Committee, opting for that which offered the best artistic and practical possibilities.[3] As well as designing and building the set and props, the architecture students also designed the Ball tickets. Unfortunately, we have no photographs of the themed sets and decorations, but they were impressive, at least according to the writer of this letter in the student newspaper of 13 January 1961:

Dear Madam, I feel I must write an appreciation of the decorations for the Christmas Ball. The Assembly Hall and the Fourth Floor landing, were masterpieces in decoration and the spiral of tinsel down the stair well was a magnificent welcome on entering the building. The Architects who de- -signed the “set” as it were, and also everyone who helped in any way with the decorating of the building are to be congratulated on their wonderful achievements. I must, however, deplore the practice carried out at the Ball itself, of stripping the Christmas tree in the Dining Hall of its tinsel so that the female participants in the Ball might be decorated still further. Not only is this tinsel costly, but it did not greatly enhance the coiffures of the ladies who were seen wearing it. To conclude, thanks to the architects, for the splendid decorations and no thanks to those members who spoiled it slightly by ruining the Tree.[4]

The Committee’s labours did not end with decorating the hall, for one of their most important tasks was to engage a suitable band or bands for the evening. The 1950s and 1960s saw combinations of dance bands and jazz bands booked to play at the Ball; by the early 1960s, an additional ‘beat band’ was also booked to play during the interval. The Committee was further responsible for hiring caterers to provide a buffet; arranging the provision of at least one liquor bar; and organising screenings of several short films (mostly cartoons) in rooms adjacent to the main dance hall. If funds permitted, the evening’s entertainment would extend to a cabaret: a ‘Malayan fire eater’, who also performed hypnotism, was booked as the cabaret artist for the Christmas Ball in 1961.[5] Less spectacular (and less dangerous) amusements were also laid on for that year’s event, including ‘Enticing Bingo Sessions’.[6]

As the decades progressed, so too did the hour at which the Ball concluded. In the 1930s, the event tended to finish at 2.00am. In 1944, the students sought permission for the Ball to last all night, but the RTC’s Director, Sir Arthur Huddleston, was averse to the idea.[7] By the late 1950s, however, the Ball was generally scheduled to conclude at 6.00am and ‘breakfast tickets’ were available, entitling each holder to enjoy a hot meal in the early morning before making their way home.[8] In 1960, a double ticket for the Ball cost 25/ and a breakfast ticket cost 3/6d.

Annual Children’s Christmas Party

As well as a Christmas Ball for the students, the Students’ Representative Council of the RTC and RCST organised an annual Christmas party for younger children from local children’s homes, held in the Students’ Union. Transport and catering costs for this event were met from the proceeds of Wednesday lunchtime showings of Fred Quimby’s Tom and Jerry cartoons, organised by the Entertainments Committee. Each student attending the ‘Freds’, as these cartoon screenings were known, was asked to give a donation of 3d.[9]

According to this report in the student newspaper of 13 January 1961, the children’s party was a loud, frenetic, but happy occasion:

   The Children’s party was held in the Union on Wednesday the 28th December. Children from homes and orphanages in Glasgow as well as the children of Union employees were given a first class treat. [To] The music played by the members of the College Music Society, the children enjoyed all their favourite singing games i.e. “The Farmer Wants a Wife”, “The Grand Old Duke of York”, and “Pass the Parcel”. The band survived although surrounded by hosts of inquisitive children who found the microphone a very intriguing gadget. Lemonade, cakes, jelly, fruit and ice cream disappeared at an alarming rate. The children had a break from balloon bursting and musical games in an excellent little film show. Then Santa, alias Ian McClure, gave them each a present before they went home.[10]

A more candid report of the same event appears in another section of the newspaper, revealing that, due to an outbreak of mumps among the younger children at one of the homes, a group of 14-year-olds had been dispatched to attend the party in place of the usual 3-8-year-olds. Unsurprisingly, ‘They did not appreciate the Farmer wants a Wife as much as usual and Santa felt perhaps just the tiniest bit embarrassed . . . by giving “Bunny Painting Books” to mature youths. Luckily they were wrapped.’[11] Despite this hiccup, the annual party was both a welcome source of diversion and entertainment for the children, and a rewarding, if physically exhausting afternoon for their student hosts.

Today, Strathclyde’s students and staff continue to bring Christmas cheer to disadvantaged children in Glasgow through the University’s annual Christmas Toy Appeal. Since its inception in 2016, the appeal has provided approximately 8,000 gifts of toys, which have been distributed to six schools and nurseries and 14 charities. He said: “They’re a pretty decent side. They might not have Robin van Persie any more, but they still have good players and it’s an intimidating stadium. ​

“It’s a wall of sound when you go there so I think that will play a part. Rangers have to handle that and put a performance in. ​

“In Holland, a lot is expected of Feyenoord, Ajax and PSV — they will certainly be tough games.​

“They didn’t do well in Europe for a while, then Ajax had that amazing run in last season’s Champions League.

“I think people in Holland had been waiting for it. ​The fact that Dutch football is coming back is not a great surprise to me.”​

The end result on Saturday couldn’t have been a surprise for County either as they have now shipped TEN goals in their last three matches.​

Things weren’t much better at the other end as Billy Mckay smacked a second-half penalty off the post and Ross Stewart hit the same upright late on.​

Now they will hope to get a few of their experienced players back from injury before the vital home game against St Mirren.

Report: Steven Gerrard wants to sign exciting forward, could be another Ryan Kent for Rangers

Steven Gerrard is looking to improve his Rangers squad with the loan signing of another Liverpool wonderkid, with the Scottish Sun claiming Ben Woodburn is a January target.

An ankle injury, though, will impact any transfer plans in January, with the blow ruling Woodburn out for a month, and Gerrard would face competition from numerous English sides with Blackburn, Brentford, Hull, West Brom and Wigan all said to be interested.

Careful not to repeat Ejaria failings

While Gerrard has a connection with Liverpool and it can come in handy when bringing talented youngsters to Scotland on loan, he will have to be careful not to repeat the failings of Ovie Ejaria’s time at the club.

The Reds midfielder was supposed to spend the 2018/19 season at Ibrox, but his season-long deal was cut short before Christmas after the 21-year-old failed to settle north of the border.

Gerrard even claimed the unsettled midfielder “didn’t seem in the right frame of mind” when he omitted Ejaria from his squad to face Rapid Vienna in the Europa League, and the Southwark-born ace was also late to training when the Gers prepared to take on Villarreal at the end of November.

That said,the Glasgow giants also brought Ryan Kent north of the border from Merseyside on loan in the summer, and there is a no reason at all why Woodburn wouldn’t follow in the 22-year-old’s footsteps at Ibrox given the clear quality and potential that he has in his locker.

So Friday morning, my fiance' and I were headed to New Jersey to visit his family for Christmas. On the way there, I was driving his truck so he could sleep a little before we switched places. Early morning when we were in Virginia, I pulled off the highway to go to a McDonalds to get some coffee. When I pulled off, it was a weird exit and I had no clue where I was going. I stopped at a red light, which had another light very close behind it which turned green, my idiot self was looking at that light for some reason while our light was still red...I hit the gas and then slammed on my breaks realizing what I was doing but it was too late and I hit a guy on the side of the door. It wasn't a big wreck. The guy didn't fly across the intersection. He didn't even move, his door was just dented and it will definitely need to be replaced but the man said he was not hurt at all. The truck we were driving in barely had damage, just a little dent in the hood that was very small to the eye and a bent license plate. We were in much better shape; but again, he was not in pain and his door was the only thing that seemed to be damaged. ANYWAYS, I received a traffic ticket for failing to obey a traffic light which I totally accept because this was extremely stupid of me and I am planning on mailing the fine to the court. So since I was driving my fiance's car, which is under his parents insurance, I assume my insurance is not affected. The trooper just told us that the other guy's insurance will contact my fiance's insurance. So I am thinking all I have to do is just pay this awful fine. Well my fiance' called me this morning and said that Statefarm (the other guy's insurance) called him asking for my number. Why would the other guy's insurance need to contact me if my fiance's parent's insurance are the ones who insure the truck? I just want to know what's to come when they call me. I don't know much of anything about insurance. I was in an auto accident without insurance. What am I facing?

I was in a car accident yesterday. I live in California. I had no insurance at the time, although I was unaware that my girlfriend had not sent in my quarterly paryment and was actually driving without insurance for almost 3 months. The day after the accident I went in to the Highway Patrol's office and spoke to the officer who took the report and informed him I discovered I had no insurance. He didnt seem all that concerned and thanked me for going in. I was traveling at about 30 mph when I started to brake and I heard the firefighter at the seen tell the chp he thought it was 25-30 mph. The driver immediately infront of me had good damage to the back of her car and was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. I suggested she call her own insurance and let them know I was inot insured. THe other driver in front and her passenger were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries and their car had minor damage when I looked at it at the time of the accident. Happy Birthday, Scottish actor Paul Brannigan, born September 14th 1986 in Glasgow.

Paul was brought up in the working-class East End are of Glasgow around Barrowfield. Both of his parents were long-term drug addicts and much of his youth was spent amidst gang violence and petty crime. “It was tough growing up, and there were moments where I just wanted to crawl away and die. I slashed my wrist with a mirror after a fight with my dad and was just like: fuck it, man, fuck it. But it’s not a sob story. I’m quite sensible; I don’t get myself too close or let my emotions go. You can get hurt and then you feel your life is destroyed.”

In jail, he taught himself to read via a diet of dictionaries and Newsnight , he said it wasn’t for the news or the politics but to listen to the way they speak, then find out what the fancy words mean, then put sentences together and learn to become articulate.

On release he was full of good intentions, but still “a bit of a lad, doing daft things”. The scar on his face was the result of a fight with his brother. He lost a job at a community centre and it looked bleak for him, however he re-prioritised after his son, Leon, was born.

We last saw Paul in a recent drama, The Nest, set in Glasgow, alongside Martin Compston, I wish him luck in ll he does in the future, I do recommend you watch him in The Angels Share and Sunshine on Leith,  Scottish Mussel isn’t a bad film either. Parents in Edinburgh are forking out the same amount every month as an average mortgage payment to pay for childcare, a report has revealed.

The price of a month’s nursery care in Scotland’s capital is £950, 43 per cent of the average Edinburgh take home salary of £2,208, according to the study from Admiral Loans. After paying a typical mortgage, a parent of one child in nursery would only save £64 a month.

In Glasgow, the picture is only marginally better, with childcare taking up 40 per cent of a typical salary in the city.

Scott Cargill, UK chief executive of Admiral Loans, said: “Our research shows the cost of childcare can be a huge burden on new families. Parents who have taken maternity or paternity leave may already be under financial pressure after being on a lower income during their time out of the workplace and may be squeezed even more when the cost of childcare kicks in.

“New parents have a lot of additional costs to consider. For families already on a tight budget, anything that pushes their spending further, such as holidays, Christmas or birthdays, can tempt people into looking for ways to ease the strain.”

Stuart Carmichael of the Debt Support Trust, said: “Many families face a financial dilemma after a child is born and it’s a problem which needs to be addressed. While efforts have been made to make it more affordable for parents to return to work after the birth of a child, for low income families, the financial benefit can be very limited.

“We are concerned that more people could be turning to high interest, short-term loans to bridge financial gaps, which are a temporary solution at best and could lead to additional stress and worry further down the line.”

Last month  Brannigan revealed he will play former gangland enforcer Paul Ferris in a film about his life, Paul says  “I understand that background. I hope nobody starts condemning Brannigan for this, he has got his life together and left that behind him, it was tough for him growing up, and found this from him in an interview in 2012;

"It was tough growing up, and there were moments where I just wanted to crawl away and die. I slashed my wrist with a mirror after a fight with my dad and was just like: fuck it, man, fuck it. But it's not a sob story. I'm quite sensible; I don't get myself too close or let my emotions go. You can get hurt and then you feel your life is destroyed."

In jail, he taught himself to read via a diet of dictionaries and Newsnight , he said it wasn't for the news or the politics but to listen to the way they speak, then find out what the fancy words mean, then put sentences together and learn to become articulate.

On release he was full of good intentions, but still "a bit of a lad, doing daft things". The scar on his face was the result of a fight with his brother. He lost a job at a community centre and it looked bleak for him, however he re-prioritised after his son, Leon, was born.

He was spotted by scriptwriter Paul Laverty at the Strathclyde police's Violence Reduction Unit, where he taught four hours of football a week. He was sceptical initially, skipped auditions, and it was only the pressure of repaying a Christmas loan that meant he finally responded to Laverty's rallying phone calls. "It probably saved my life, to be honest. I'd nowhere to turn, got a kid; who knows what I'd have done for money."

I could go on and post a lot of things that Paul has done wrong on his life, but I could also say many things about my own life that I have done wrong,
