I have been training teachers for the past two weeks. I don’t think that there is one time I did not say “if they can’t say it, they can’t write it.“ Discussion is so important in the classroom. Students need to talk, engage in academic discourse, use academic language and be able to express themselves in the oral and written form. We must have them do it verbally first before they can produce it in it’s written form. Remember if they can’t say it they can’t write it. Quote
Information for making decisions is best obtained through careful observation of students.  Their strengths and weaknesses as they interact with one another and with texts can be assessed as they participate in small groups… contribute to class discussions, respond to questions, and complete written assignments… this approach is student centered.
(Vacca & Vacca, 2005)
As we observe our students during discussions, we can tailor the lessons to meet their individual academic needs and preferences, all while keeping it student centered.  The strengths and weaknesses, as well as the perspectives, of the students will be showcased during discussions and help us with the decisions we make regarding our instruction.
