Imagine hopping aboard a MARTA train in Midtown, and within a few stops arriving at Emory University, in Norcross, Marietta, or south of the city in Forest Park.

New York City-based artist Jake Berman has imagined those scenarios as part of a series called “The Lost Subways of North America,” but his work is based in reality.

Or rather, in real mass-transit proposals that never came to be.

As head of Fifty-Three Studio, Berman’s map-based creations have been spotlighted by media across the U.S. and England. This month he set sights on 1962 plans illustrating what Atlanta’s initial MARTA system could have looked like—and also what the city’s extensive streetcar system once was.

“In the earliest versions of the MARTA plans, released in 1962, the system was far more extensive than what was actually built, before it was scaled down,” writes Berman of his work. “Similar to the experience in San Francisco with BART, only three of the five metropolitan counties joined the MARTA district.”

Berman’s early 1960s depiction appears to be accurate, as compared to old maps pulled in 2016 by Advance ATL, which delved deeper into why MARTA’s original network wasn’t as extensive as had initially been envisioned.

Local approvals for MARTA were gained only in Fulton and DeKalb counties (Clayton would join later), and rejections of the system have continued to as recently as March, when a majority of Gwinnett voters again said no thanks to Atlanta-based transit.

Still, MARTA rail remains the eighth largest transportation system in the U.S., with nearly 65 million riders in 2018, according to the American Public Transportation Association.

Regarding the bygone Atlanta streetcar network, Berman’s interpretation shows a true web of lines stretching from Westview Cemetery to “East Lake Country Club” and beyond in 1940.

“Atlanta was not in the first rank of American cities in 1940,” notes the artist. “It was an important regional center with 300,000 inhabitants, but it was only the country’s 28th-largest city, behind Newark, Rochester, and Columbus, Ohio.”

Faced with Atlanta’s outward expansion and the rise of affordable automobiles, Atlanta’s old streetcar network welcomed its last passengers in 1949.

Atlanta’s 13-county ATL board moves toward adopting sweeping regional transit plan

Agency officials have grown the list by more than 100 projects and could soon appeal for state funding

Next month, the 13-county regional transit agency known as “The ATL” could approve a broad wishlist for more than $27 billion in transit investments.

Finalizing the regional transit plan, currently worth an estimated $27.4 billion, is crucial for securing state funding help, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

The working project list now includes nearly 200 goals—notable growth since a 76-project list was unveiled in September—that could better connect the many transit networks scattered about metro Atlanta.

Some of the proposed projects are transit behemoths, such as the potentially $1.9 billion Clifton Corridor, which would ultimately become a new transit line connecting MARTA’s Lindbergh station to Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Others, though, are small potatoes. Such as the $45,000 tentatively earmarked for staff vehicles for Douglas County’s new transit system, per the AJC.

In September, when the project list was far smaller, ATL officials organized proposed transit projects into categories to help inform how the regional plan could be prioritized.

A few other anticipated elements of the potentially monumental transit expansion include light-rail transit along the whole 22-mile Beltline loop, a commuter rail line from MARTA’s East Point station to Jonesboro and Lovejoy in Clayton County, and bus rapid transit (BRT) routes in Fulton, DeKalb, and Gwinnett counties.

Earlier plans also called for MARTA’s Gold Line to stretch all the way up to Norcross, too.

The ATL’s website offers a spreadsheet breaking down the costs of each project and which local agency would sponsor them.
