RFP Podcast Episode #172 – Kids, Chaos, & Back Again w/ Bryan Shane
We had such a good time having our first guest, my wife Robin Ubaldini, a couple episodes ago, we decided to do it again. Hopefully we can make this a pattern. Today’s special guest and I go way back, over 30 years, and it has been a long, strange, wonderful adventure. Bryan Shane, being almost 5 years my younger, and I basically grew up together. He was the younger brother I never had 😊, along with other brothers, Chris, Jeff, and Kevin. There are a number of topics that come out today and it promises to be a fun ride. We will also talk about Bryan’s upcoming fundraising event, Climb for A Cure, to help raise money and awareness for the AIM at Melanoma Foundation. We provided a link below to learn more about the effort and cause. For those willing and able to donate, we would all be very grateful. https://support.aimatmelanoma.org/fundraiser/2721517 You can get your Climb for A Cure merchandise here too with proceeds going to help the fight. https://www.sweetteastitches.com/climbforacure “Enlightenment through exertion.” “Step towards it & take a closer look.”

Wilsons Promontory Hike
Two weeks ago I went on a four day hike around the beautiful Wilsons Prom. My hiking buddy and I departed Melbourne nice and early on Thursday Morning to be in Wilsons Prom in time for lunch, which we enjoyed after checking in and before heading off on our four day hiking adventure.
We started our hike from Telegraph Saddle car park around 12pm and, carrying around 16 kilos each including 4 kilos each of food, we head off to Little Waterloo Bay.
This image is taken from the walking track between Telegraph Junction and Little Waterloo Bay.

We arrived at Little Waterloo Bay around 4pm which gave us enough time to set up camp and make a start on dinner before the sun went down.
Our second day we departed Little Waterloo Bay at 9am and hiked around 15 kilometres to Sealers Cove. This took us mostly along a track less frequently travelled since the 2011 floods. Still carrying close to 16 kilos each and being sore from the first day, this was our most difficult day.
We took a short detour along the way to check out Kersops Peak, below is an image of me at the junction to Kersops Peak. We had spectacular views of the Prom as we were fortunate to have gorgeous weather.

Along the way we stopped at Refuge Cove for lunch and to refill our water bottles. Unable to find flowing water we refilled with brackish water which we treated before drinking.
The hike from Little Waterloo Bay to Sealers Cove took us a little longer than we were expecting as the path was more difficult and we had some trouble finding our way. We arrived at camp around 5pm which gave us just enough time to set up camp before it was dark.
Day three was a bit easier than day two as we had eaten over 2 kilos of food each! Recalling how much more time it took us then we had anticipated the previous day we headed off bright and early at 8am.
This image was taken on Refuge Cove North Beach about a 15 to 20 minute hike from Refuge Cove.

With an earlier start and no getting lost we made it back to Little Waterloo Bay nice and early at 3pm, plenty of time to set up camp and relax on the beach before the sun went down.
Our final day we were sad to be hiking back to our car and tired after having hiked nearly 50 kilometres already. Contrary to what may be expected though day four was our easiest as our muscles were well stretched and no longer sore and our packs weight was down to only 12 kilos each.
After our final breakfast at Wilsons Prom, we headed of at 9am and was back at the car in no time ready for lunch which we had ready waiting for our return.
Wilsons Prom was a great hike and I look forward to hiking here again, perhaps in summer next time.

Fundraising Update
I am planning to throw a fundraising ball later in the year as part of my Climb for a Cure to raise funds for Cure Cancer Australia. I am looking at potential venues at the moment and am hoping to hold the fundraising ball in June. I plan on getting some media coverage too, get a local radio station host to be the Master of Ceremonies if I can and secure some good Melbourne bands. Get Cure Cancer Australia Foundation more known and spoken about and get 500 people to come party to fund cancer research. Ill definitely be holding a raffle and an auction and maybe a couple fundraising games too.

Training Update
People die on Mount Kilimanjaro nearly every week and I want to be at peak fitness level for my big climb to ensure I have the best possible chance of making it to the summit! So I have started cycling to and from work in order to increase my stamina and overall fitness level. Its nearly 30 kilometers return, so not real long but long enough to feel it after cycling to and from work every day last week. I went to BodyPump again, I did a little less wait then last week though, so I was still able to walk afterwards! I had a personal training session too, which I nearly passed out during... the biggest change I have noticed now I am training is the increase in appetite! I have almost doubled what I would normally eat and still don't seem to be able to eat enough to starve off my hunger!

Training Update
I joined a gym the other day to make a start on my training for my Climb for a Cure. Its been a few years since I have had a gym membership and I didnt do much other than yoga when I had one. Last night I attended my first group training session in my new gym and decided BodyPump would be the way to go. I got an amazing workout and discovered muscles I didnt know I had! I have been feeling the results of my workout all day! Ouchie
