The Ultimate Coat Guide: Stay Warm and Stylish
Tumblr media
As the temperatures drop and winter approaches, it's time to bundle up and stay cozy. A well-chosen coat can not only keep you warm but also add a touch of style to your winter wardrobe. But with so many options available, how do you pick the perfect coat for your needs? Fear not, because in this ultimate coat guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know to make the right choice.
1. Know Your Climate:
Before you start shopping for a coat, it's essential to consider your local climate. Different regions experience various levels of cold, rain, and snow. If you live in a place with harsh winters, you'll need a heavy-duty coat with insulation, while a lighter coat may suffice in milder climates.
2. Coat Styles:
There are various coat styles to choose from, each with its unique features and aesthetics. Here are some popular options: - Pea Coat: A classic choice with a double-breasted front, perfect for a timeless look. - Parka: Ideal for extreme cold, parkas are long and often come with a fur-lined hood for added warmth. - Trench Coat: Elegant and versatile, trench coats are great for both formal and casual occasions. - Puffer Jacket: Known for their excellent insulation, puffer jackets are lightweight and cozy. - Overcoat: Perfect for dressing up, overcoats are long and typically worn over suits.
3. Materials Matter:
The material of your coat plays a crucial role in its warmth and durability. Common materials include: - Wool: Provides excellent warmth and is a classic choice for winter coats. - Down: Lightweight and incredibly warm, down insulation is a top choice for frigid temperatures. - Synthetic Insulation: Offers warmth even when wet and is cruelty-free. - Waterproof Fabrics: Important if you face rainy or snowy conditions.
4. Consider Coat Length:
The length of your coat can affect both style and functionality. Longer coats provide more coverage and warmth, while shorter ones offer a more casual look. Choose a length that suits your style and needs.
5. Fit and Size:
A well-fitting coat not only looks better but also keeps you warmer. Ensure that your coat allows for layering without feeling too tight. Consider trying it on with your winter clothing to ensure a comfortable fit.
6. Features to Look For:
- Hood: A hood can provide added protection from the cold and precipitation. - Pockets: Look for ample pockets to keep your hands warm and store essentials. - Zippers and Closures: High-quality zippers and closures are essential for durability. - Ventilation: Some coats come with ventilation options to prevent overheating.
7. Maintenance:
Consider the maintenance requirements of your chosen coat. Some materials are easier to care for than others, so make sure you're willing to invest the time in cleaning and maintaining your coat.
8. Budget:
Set a budget before you start shopping, as coats come in a wide range of prices. Remember that investing in a quality coat can pay off in terms of warmth and longevity.
9. Timeless vs. Trendy:
While trendy coats can be fun, a timeless style will serve you well for years to come. Consider a classic design that won't go out of fashion.
In conclusion, finding the perfect coat is all about understanding your needs, climate, and personal style. Take your time to explore different options, try on various coats, and don't be afraid to invest in quality. With the right coat, you can stay warm and stylish all winter long.

are amphibians like newts and frogs considered aquatic? i know crustaceans & mollusks would be
Yes they are! Generally, the more time it spends on land, the closer it will be to 5 calories than 4. The estimate was actually based on frogs and tadpoles, I had to make an educated guess.
My best source was a feeding chart from a reptile food website which sells whole small prey for consumption by snakes. It perfectly lists out the values of dozens of small animals, but no fish. So I took a note of the 4 calorie estimate, observed that an adult frog increases in calories compared to tadpoles (bucking the trend with the others on the list where younger animals are worth more caloric value) and went on to do more research
I couldn't find a source that broke down WHOLE prey caloric value like the chart, so I ended up comparing caloric value between rabbit fillets, chicken fillets, and fish fillets on human-centric nutrition websites. My hypothesis was mostly consistent, even with more species added. Fish (perch, flounder, pike) < Wild Mammal (rabbit, squirrel) < Poultry (chicken, turkey, quail). There was overlap between "classes", certain fish getting over the 100 hump, but generally there was a trend I boiled down into 4/5/6
This is consistent with how a lot of fish meat is actually water. In fact, cats quench a lot of their thirst from the food they eat. I also learned some very interesting stuff about the fat distribution in fish which is going to blow a bit of a hole in some of my Clan culture stuff lmaoooo, but I'll furiously swim across that obliterated bridge when I get there
But funfact! Fish oil is rendered fish fats and it is the form that unsaturated fat takes, whereas lard is what saturated fats become. I need to do more research into this topic to understand what kind of difference it would make in a wild cat's diet.
There was one big bucked trend though: salmonid meat was WAAAAY higher in fat and calories. Like, absurdly high. Like 150 cal trout fillet vs 110 cal of rabbit fillet vs 88 cal of perch fillet.
I do not know why that is. My guess is that maybe it's because they were taking the number from farmed salmonids? Maybe it's because they're particularly fatty fish? Perhaps this is just the raw power of salmon slammin'.
Anyway, at one point I was trying to estimate exact caloric value per popular prey species, but decided I didn't have the "backing" to get so exact with the numbers since I was doing estimates with the fish. I'll do the work if it comes down to it, but for now, 4/5/6 is a quick, easy guideline you can use for just about any WC project.

because i had to (politely) warn/criticize an acquaintance musher who was out on the trail in 86% humidity and 80F weather running their dogs on a rig when i was there today, i thought now was a good reminder that:
dogs do not cool down effectively when it is more humid
dogs that have previously suffered heat stroke are more at risk of developing it again and will do so more easily than a dog who has never had heat stroke. This ALONE is a great risk to sled dogs.
in the northern hemisphere a majority of dog heat stroke incidents take place in July (which is the month I'm writing this).
most mushers do not recommend running dogs in harness over 50F. No your dogs are likely not an exception. All dogs can develop heat stroke.
HERE is a post with a helpful chart from the Australia Sledding Sports Association about how to determine a safe combination of humidity and heat to run in. (it is in Celcius, but the combination of what we walked in today was easily a 26 on this chart.)
Some mushers CAN train dogs during the summer. Those that are in much more arctic conditions where early am may sometimes be frosty this time of year are clear to do so. Although the Mush with P.R.I.D.E. Sled Dog Welfare Guide has some warnings about the risks running dogs in hot weather poses. Their description of heat stroke even mentions snow which, yes, is true. Sled Dogs can easily overheat even in snowy conditions. Even then though, the summer mushers i see (who are in like...the Yukon...) are regularly monitoring temperatures and not running when it is above 50F.
and look. I've been at the receiving end of weather temperature criticism myself. I once ran Sigurd and Zombie on a like...60F degree evening in summer as a novice and my mentor tore me a new one. I felt bad (and cried lol), but it is what it is and i never did it again. It's also why working with and/or seeking advice from sport veterans is important. I will also never stall or refuse to tell somebody they're posing a risk to their dogs, not only bc i care for their animals well beings, but because mushers pushing dogs like this does reflect badly on the sport.
The one thing i do to make sure i'm aware of how hot my dogs may be besides monitoring the temperatures? I overdress whenever i take them out.

Want to build your own Piano Coat Rack?
I put together some plans for the Piano Coat Rack so that if anyone else wants to try to make one they have a starting point. I ended up putting them on itch.io for free since tumblr doesn't really like PDFs or zip files. The plans are free for non-commercial use. I also have a section describing some of the process to hopefully make it fairly easy to replicate.
I put these plans together in FreeCad, so along with a PDF version of the technical drawings there are also full 3D models that you can use to get a better understanding of how it goes together. If you notice any oddities or mistakes or have any question please just me up!
Also if you make one please tag me, I would love to see it!

My Favorite Colorful Coats For Fall and Winter
Autum lovers get super excited around this time of year, because they get to rock their favorite fall and winter gear. I'm going to be honest, I'm not a fan of the cooler temps, but I do like the variety of fashions that I can showcase during this time of year. I especially adore a cute colorful coat.

3rd Poirot film A Haunting in Venice filming on location
Kenneth Branagh, Tina Fey and Riccardo Scamarcio were spotted filming the upcoming Agatha Christie adaptation on January 6 and 7 2023 in Venice, Italy.
Branagh was also seen filming at the Clock Tower in Piazza San Marco, and later with his double taking a ride on a police gondola through the canals. Branagh appeared in a navy double-breasted coat, striped blue suit, white shirt, red silk tie, black leather gloves, Homburg hat, carrying Poirot's iconic cane and a book about Venice.
Corriere del Veneto (via Italy24) reports the cast will be shooting in Venice until mid-January. "There will be filming on the water with stage gondolas, vintage boats and 1950s taxis." Other locations mentioned include Campo San Giacomo dell'Orio (a square with a church), Conservatorio Benedetto Marcello (music conservatory), San Samuele (church), Palazzo Malipiero (palace), Campo San Boldo (square near the famous Rialto Bridge), etc.
Based on Agatha Christie's novel Hallowe'en Party, the film is set in post-World War II Venice on All Hallows' Eve. Now retired and living in self-imposed exile in the world's most glamorous city, Poirot reluctantly attends a séance at a decaying, haunted palazzo. When one of the guests is murdered, the detective is thrust into a sinister world of shadows and secrets.
