When I was getting my second cochlear implant surgery, I was on my period.
To get the surgery, they told me not to drink water 8 hours beforehand.
At the hospital, they told me I had to pee in a cup so they could make sure I wasn't pregnant, because the anesthesia would kill or harm the fetus.
I was like.
Bruh.
First I argued that I couldn't pee while I was dehydrated, but they kept telling me "to try." Then I was like, "BUT IM ON MY PERIOD NOW! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO BE PREGNANT???"
So they had to go fetch the anesthesiologist, and she came in to talk to me. "Are you SURE you can't pee in a cup?"
"I haven't had anything to drink in 8 hours! What am I supposed to pee with??"
"and you're POSITIVE you're on your period?"
"I'm literally bleeding from my vagina right now, into your hospital sheets. What do you MEAN, am I positive??"
So she let me sign a waiver saying that I did not get a pregnancy test before the surgery, and I acknowledged that if I was pregnant and the anesthesia harmed the baby, I could not sue.
And my mom was in the room for the whole conversation, just laughing at everything that was happening, and I was like, "seriously?? SERIOUSLY???? ARE THEY FRICKIN SERIOUS?????"

Genuinely curious, because it annoys me when something is completely removed, what are y'all's thoughts about when the person still has the disability, but through sci-fi tech or magic, they are able to regain most of the ability? Like, when a paralyzed ir amputee character becomes a cyborg or gets magical limbs, or a deaf person getting cochlear implants that are future tech and much better than the current ones? When a person, whether a kid or an adult, receives a cochlear implant, they do not start hearing right away. Only three to four weeks after the device is inserted into the middle ear does the speech processor start up. This is the amount of time needed for the swelling to go down and the postoperative suture to heal. In each instance, experts participate in adjusting the processor.
