I mean he’s probably his twin, but he did just turn around and shoot us a taunting look here, so he’ll probably be hella important later in the show.

Wow... In response to this, we saw Zero take off his mask and shoot a piercing glare backwards. And if you even look at these two images closely, the colors of the sky would match up in such a way that it would look like Lelouch was looking back at this Clovis lookalike, who would be standing behind him.

I dunno about you, but I suspect this fella might be the next big baddie of the season once Cornelia gets dealt with.

The LuluShir in Code Geass' Short Story, "Hikari"

As shared by piggyhoho on LJ back in 2008, there was a short Code Geass story in the November '08 issue of Newtype. This short story took place after R2's finale and featured a look into Lelouch's ideal world; which included Lelouch finally asking Shirley out.

The short story, titled "Hikari" ("Light"), was written by Arata Kanoh (加納新太), who wrote a good chunk (if not most) of the Code Geass sound episodes. piggyhoho shared a detailed summary of the full story in the link above, but I went ahead and bought the magazine because I wanted to read the full LuluShir scene.

So, here is the scene where Lelouch asks Shirley out, as well as the ending of the story; featuring matchmaker Suzaku & CC confirming this is what Lelouch would've wanted his ideal world to look like.

Then, Suzaku suddenly looked behind me. He lightly squeezed my left shoulder, gave me a meaningful smile and headed towards the classroom. I was just wondering what was up with him— we’re in the same class after all, so shouldn’t we go together? —when I looked over my shoulder and understood the reason.

“Shirley…”

“Good morning, Lulu.”

Shirley walked forward with light steps, and came to a stop before me.

“Is something wrong?”

I wonder why, when I saw her soft smile, my heart worked itself into a frenzy.

Along with the joy, there was an unexplainable regret.

It was a complex feeling.

It felt like the possibilities that closed-off without choice were weeping from somewhere.*

As we walked down the school halls, Shirley and I made small talk about anything and everything. Things like the weather, homework and 'Don’t tell me you’re going to doze off in class again, Lulu!'. For some reason, such a conversation felt very fulfilling, despite having no urgency to it.

I suddenly remembered something I had kept in my breast pocket. That's right, these must have found their way to me precisely for this very moment.

"Hey, Shirley..."

"Hm? What is it?”

"What do you think of classical music?"

"Huh? Well, not much, really. I've never been particularly interested in it."

"I just happened to have some tickets for a concert, if you'd like to come."

"Huh?! You mean, you want to go with m—me?"

"Yes, I want to go with you."

"I—I mean, but what about Nunna-chan and Rollo...?"

"I only have two tickets," I said. "You aren’t interested?"

Suddenly, Shirley leaned forward and said, "I am! I'm really, really interested in classical music!"

"I'm glad to hear that," I replied. And I meant it, in more ways than one. I didn't think she would refuse, but I could have invited her in a way that would make it impossible for her to turn me down. I was truly glad I didn’t choose to word my invitation that way...

Shirley and I walked shoulder to shoulder down the halls, until we reached the classroom.

Its closed door was right before us.

I looked at the clock. We were right on time. The bell would surely ring one second after we open the door.

Well then, let’s enjoy our boring class to the fullest, shall we?

I looked at Shirley’s smiling face, and she nodded good naturedly.

I opened the classroom door.

Light poured out and wrapped around me.

I see.

Lelouch.

So, this is what you wished for?

You were going to take over the world.

Yet, this is what you hoped that “world” would look like.

Oh, what a modest dream.

No, that’s far from it.

You wanted to have it all, without missing a single thing.

How greedy.

What a selfish, sweet dream.

You have been set free from the world.

* I wasn't sure how to read this particular phrase, and jodanj on Reddit helped me make sense of it. One of the translations they suggested in particular broke my heart in all the right ways: "It feels like hearing, weeping from somewhere, everything that could have happened but didn't." As usual, I did my best to translate everything as accurately (and naturally) as possible, but my Japanese is far from perfect so don't hesitate to let me know if I misread something.

Ooh, there’s Shirley’s dad! Poor guy.

Lelouch can only watch the news in tense silence. He doesn’t know what to do. The rebels haven’t recouped in time to launch any sort of attack on Cornelia and/or the hotel, and moreover, such a play would be far too risky against a mind like Cornelia’s. Lelouch doesn’t know what to do. And he knows, deep down, that soon enough the JLF won’t have any further use for their hostages. And when that happens...

Oh my god are you serious

Ohgi brought up the weird clothes in one of the boxes Lelouch had prepared for them. Soooo, I guess Lelouch is getting his rebranding of the rebels underway. The first step, to dress them all up as “Knights for Justice.”

Okay yeah, his love for theatrics is real, and not just mindgames to confuse opponents. What a guy.

...But hey, if everyone starts dressing as snazzily as Zero, I won’t complain.

Sure enough, the guards outside busted in when they heard gunshots. Who knows if they’ll freaking believe Zero when he said that everyone here just commit suicide, because they realized how futile this hostage situation was? Though, Kusakabe frozen in place with his gut cleaved open by his own sword, hands still gripping the hilt, makes it believable.

...Wait, so how did Zero know that Euphemia sacrificed herself for the commoners? Oh, maybe he’s just assuming that. I mean, there’s a possibility that the guards realized who she was, but... Well, Lelouch knew Euphemia personally, once upon a time, so he probably just knows her tendencies well.

Meanwhile, Suzaku drew near to the Raikou. Realizing there was nowhere else to evade, he stated he would use the VARIS-- which prompted Cecile to freak out that he may die.

I dunno, just looks like a standard ol’ gun, to me. Come to think of it, we still don’t really know what it is about Lancelot that’s so dangerous to the pilot, do we? Unless this gun somehow uses its pilot’s life energy or somethin’ as ammo, I dunno what Cecile means.

Maybe she’s just talking about... You know, standing still to fire upon the giant cannon. Hmm.

As Zero declares, the Black Knights are defenders of those who cannot defend themselves. Eleven or Britannia, it doesn’t matter. And the JLF here tonight-- they cowardly took innocent civillians hostage, then started executing them one by one.

Well. Guess I didn’t need to wonder if Tohdoh would view Zero as an enemy. Zero has already renounced his movement, and Tohdoh is grimacing. Haha, poor guy, I feel for him. Kusakabe’s totally idiotic move cost the JLF big time.

Oh thank goodness, Euphemia is alive. Good. If Zero had killed her, it would fly right in the face of what he’s saying now.

The JLF here tonight, and Prince Clovis earlier... Both were harming the innocent. That is what Zero is drumming up... The Black Knights are Justice. They will punish the wicked.

“The only ones who should kill... Are the ones prepared to be killed!”

What an incredible play this is. Zero has effectively placed a leash around Britannia’s neck, with the threat of his vengeance if Britannia works its evil again.

However... Is this not a double-edged sword? Britannia could massacre innocents again to draw out Zero, right into a trap. And if he doesn’t show? Then his image will be destroyed and the public will no longer respect him.

This is a very dangerous game, indeed.

Well, holy shit. The guards outside were preoccupied with the many, many barrels of rifles pointed at them from down the hallway (surely the Rebels), which meant that Zero had some one-on-one time with Euphemia.

Zero told his sister, with a mocking tone, that Clovis begged for mercy to his dying breath. Begged for his life, with the same tongue that ordered the deaths of countless Elevens. But that wasn’t why Zero killed him... It was because he was the child of the Emperor.

With that, he pulled a gun on Euphemia and said that she, too, was a child of the Emperor.

Holy shit, Lelouch. I guess he doesn’t care whether or not someone in the royal family is “cool,” or “good.” No, for him... They all have to go. Regardless of who they are as a person, or what their goals are. I don’t know if Lelouch even knows what Euphemia is like, or what she’s done over all these years.

He just wants to kill her. He wants to kill every last member of the Britannian bloodline. Except for himself and Nunnaly, of course.

Well, hey! Suzaku did it! He used the VARIS, which shot out some ridiculously cool looking blue and green laser beams. The Raikou was destroyed, as was the foundation pillar!

Now the building is sinking very quickly. I suppose this is how Euphemia gets to live... No doubt Zero was toppled over briefly at the shock of the building collapsing beneath him.

Oh... Uhh..... UHHHHH....

Suzaku spotted Zero chillin’ in one of the windows, casually looking outside. No one else was visible standing in the room.

Holy shit. You don’t really think Lelouch actually killed Euphemia, do you? That... Pretty much pulls the rug right out from under where Suzaku’s story is going. Euphemia felt so essential to his story, you know!?

But... Now that I think about it. If Zero really did just kill Euphemia, that would be the perfect catalyst to get Suzaku to personally hate him. To send this rivalry into high gear. To make the downtime Suzaku shares with Lelouch all the more tense and awkward. I... Am not gonna lie. I’d be okay with Euphemia being dead.

She’s probably not, though.

With the song entering it’s chorus, we were treated first to Suzaku deploying the Lancelot onto the field of battle... And then C.C., flying by in the familiar wobbly blue Geass vortex, with tears in her eyes. She reached out, but then flew away, just as soon as she arrived.

Man, C.C. really is mysterious, isn’t she? We’ve never seen her cry before, and her stand-offish no-nonsense personality doesn’t really lend itself to a sight like this. I wonder what her full story is...

Oh, hey! Hello! Who are you? I don’t know this person. This is probably the sequence I was warned to close my eyes for. But yeah, I don’t mind this “spoiler.”

Let’s see... It’s a woman with black hair, and green eyes... Wearing a gold and ruby circlet, and her clothes seem to be very fancy. Has a frilly ruffly neck thingy, and all that.

She’s seen through small blinds, and there’s a bamboo forest in the background...

This is probably a member of the Britannian royal family. She’s dressed like a noble, and all that. The black hair is making me subtly suspicious that she may have very, very, very close relations with Lelouch... Do we really know how many children Marianne had? Actually, I’m getting Princess Kaguya vibes from this lady, from the folk tale, though maybe it’s just the bamboo.

Whoa! Hey! This is an interesting turn of events. That’s Tohdoh right there, right? The guy with the bushy brows? Once the name of the JLF leader who’s in charge of the hijacking came up, he got super frustrated and called him an imbecile.

Interesting. Very interesting. Either Tohdoh is angry that the person’s name was revealed, or he’s angry that they’re doing this in the first place. Yeah... Come to think of it, swarming some isolated hotel in the middle of a lake, holding hostages, with no easy escape doesn’t seem like a plan that “tactical genius” Tohdoh would make. I suppose the voices we’ve heard in the JLF that were eager to make their move couldn’t wait anymore.

Sure enough, there’s a massive platoon of Britannians on the coast, surveilling the situation. Among them, Suzaku... I’m sure Lancelot isn’t far behind. I wonder who’s directly overseeing this, though? Probably Cornelia.

So. Turns out that at the hotel on this day, a whoooole bunch of bigwigs had gathered to discuss the distribution of Sakuradite across the world. Sakuradite is, apparently, the world’s most efficient energy source, and powers the vast majority of the Empire. Area 11 produces pretty much all of it... So yeah, the JLF have taken the CEOs in charge of Sakuradite hostage.

I can now see why they ignored Tohdoh’s will and did this. It’s too juicy an opportunity to pass up.

Let’s resume episode 08! And also cover the opening, once we’re done!

Suzaku is indeed following his orders and preparing to upheave the whole delicate situation. He’ll charge through the tunnel, neutralize the deadly Raikou cannon, and then knock out the central support beam under the building. This will cause it to sink down into the lake...

The hostages are apparently being kept in a “middle” floor, but it’s still really high up! Essentially, the last floor before the building’s shape changes radically. Once the building starts to sink, they’ll have about eight minutes to work with before that floor goes underwater.

That is a FAST sink time... With Zero and his rebel buddies there, it’s gonna get very, very chaotic. Let’s see what happens!

Indeed, Cornelia personally confronted Zero, and even stepped out of her KnightMare. Lelouch knows full well that this is an excellent opportunity to use Geass on her, but... No. That needs to wait. Indeed, Lelouch wants to get this done without using Geass at all.

And damn, is Cornelia quick on the uptake. She predicted, too, that Zero was about to offer his help, and she made it clear up front that she doesn’t want it.

Well, what now?

Cornelia had her massive pistol aimed at Zero, ready to fire, but he did indeed disarm her with words. Zero surprised her with his knowledge. That he knew that Euphemia was in there, and that Cornelia wanted to save her over avenging Clovis.

Well played, Lelouch... He used his knowledge of his own family to his advantage. He recalled memories of Cornelia and Euphemia in their childhood-- how Cornelia loved to dote on her sweet little sister. The attachment between them was immense... And that’s exactly what Lelouch is exploiting now.

So when Zero, who has knowledge he shouldn’t have, then tells Cornelia that it’s within his power to save Euphemia... I think she has no choice but to accept that.
