Server vs Client - side scripting ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I’m working on moving some scripts to the server. the main benefit is that I have more control of them when they are in the cloud. Going with React Native ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As an indie, one of the coolest challenges is to choose your weapons. There's no client, boss or project manager who will decide the technology or framework to use. You can pick whatever you are already comfortable with, or go for options you haven't tried. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For the last 2 years, I've heard a lot of good things about React Native. Friends have suggested it to me numerous times. So I've spent few months learning about it, running some tests and it looks like a good idea. So I'll go with it for this new app. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2 reasons for this: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1) An indie project is the perfect scenario to play with the new kid in town. Worst case scenario: it's not the right tool and you can move to something else without worrying about missing deadlines. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2) Only by using a tool or framework you can make an opinion about it. That will help in the future for potential client work. 3rd party modules. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This past weekend I decided to have custom icons on my app, the module I’m using for icons (native-vector-icons) is amazing, but after careful consideration I wanted to have my own icons. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Before starting I knew this could be challenging, there are many variables that can go wrong. Specially because 2 modules would have to be updated since I started the project. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 3rd party modules are great, and when the developers update the it usually is for improving. But it comes with a price, specially in RN when most modules are in version 0.x ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I spent more than 3 hours dealing with an unknown problem, after updating 2 modules, my app crashed. 1st I thought it was me and restore from backup and update again, and the app crashed. Bring ideas down to earth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Having an idea is the easiest part of making app. Every other day I have a new idea. For the next 5 minutes is the best idea ever: “Why nobody has already done this? It’s great” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ After spending 20 more minutes really thinking about that “idea” I would realize is not that great… and actually it’s stupid. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Once I’ve spent enough time in my head and my idea doesn’t suck that much; it’s time to bring it down to earth. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I started drafting it using penultimate by @evernote. Suddenly I noticed that some features are not that clear. So, I think I’ll spend couple of days drawing more modules/functions.
