Coding Explained
“We all interact with code everyday. Yet only around a third of 1% of us actually write it. To the overwhelming majority, it’s a black box. So how does coding really work?”
Saw the latest episode of Netflix’s Explained series announced on twitter after reading up on biased algorithms and all that not good stuff so naturally I had to watch. Man am I glad I did.
“An algorithm is just a series of steps,”
“With machine learning, the computer builds its own directions.”
It was a concise, high level overview of coding history with some interesting tidbits. Unfortunately for my purposes it only briefly touched upon modern usage of algorithms and machine learning but that didn’t matter so much because the graphics were very relevant. The visualisations are simple but nicely done and walk the line between nostalgic computing style and modern flat graphics. This timeless quality is like what I want to achieve with the visual style of The Arcadia Report.
“Much the way builders determine how we live in the world, coders determine how we live online.”
There were also some nice tidbits on how code can impact how we live, which are definitely food for thought.
“By controlling the choices we can make, code can exert a greater control on us than any law.”
