A Cyclist's Guide to Basic Bike Repair
Bicycle maintenance is essential for all types of riders. Whether you ride your bike to work, race, or go out on the trails once a month, you need to stay on top of essential maintenance to avoid dangerous conditions and costly surprises. A regular tune-up ensures that bicycles are safe, steady, and trouble-free. Bike maintenance is a broad topic. We'll start with a pre-ride inspection, securing bolts, and cleaning and lubricating key components. Don't forget to have your bike regularly serviced by a mechanic.
Even if that's the case, every time you have to take your ride in for a repair, you spend less time riding and almost always spend more money. As a result, learning some basic repair skills that you can do at home can save you both time and money. So here's your guide to basic bicycle repairs.
Fixing a flat tire
Before looking for holes, check the tire pressure. Locate the intended air pressure range for each tire, which is usually printed on the smooth side of the tire, to ensure that the tires are properly inflated. Use a bike pump with a tire pressure gauge to find the sweet spot. Also, unless you enjoy exploding tires, avoid using gas station air pumps, which are incredibly powerful and can blow out smaller bicycle wheels when changing a tire. Check around inside the tire for any foreign objects, such as a small piece of gravel or glass, that could cause another flat. Prior to inflating a new tube, make sure it isn't caught between the rim and the tire. If the tires immediately begin to sag, you have a puncture. It's always good to bring a spare inner tube when you travel.
Repairing a Slipped Chain
A snagged chain can turn a pleasant ride into a nightmare. It usually falls out of the rear cogset and the front chainring (part of the crank). Return the chain to the bottom groove of the rear cog first. Once the chain is attached to the cog, drape it over the teeth on the top of the front chainring. The final step is to reconnect the rear cogset to the front chainring. When the chain is in the proper position, slowly advance the pedal, which will pull the chain around the entire chainring and back to the cogset. If the chain keeps falling off, likely, it's too long for the bike frame.
Fixing a stuck seat
Nothing is worse than dealing with a stuck seat that is too high or too low, as anyone who has ever had a hand-me-down bike knows. The first step is to loosen the binder and remove the collar and bolt altogether. Next, soak the entire problem area in WD-40 and leave it alone overnight to allow the spray to work. If the seat still won't move, grab the saddle and twist the post-free. If stuck, use a clamp and pliers to turn and pull the pieces apart. Keep the post and tube clean and greased to avoid a sticky situation. Mark the appropriate height on the seat with electrical tape before removing it from the box. Wipe down the post and tube with a clean rag, smear some grease in the line and on the post, and reassemble everything.
Lubricate your chain
Examine your chain and all of the gears. Keeping your chain lubricated and everything clean will help your bike shift more manageably, and the drivetrain, which includes the front chainrings, rear cassette, rear derailleur, and chain, will last longer.

ok i got the new pedals on mom's bike and now that it's inside i can see that, uh, this is gonna be fun :B it's been sitting for so long that the place where the tires touched the ground is squarshed flat, so i might need to do... something.... with that. (come to think of it i need to check the tubes on my tires, too, bc smthins not right there) the chain and the rear cogset are rusty af. i think i can PROBABLY clean them but like we'll see :B also this just is like.. a fact...... mom's rear derailleur is better than mine >:T

Proud to say changed out my bike chain over the weekend. A step in my aspirations to become an amateur #bikemechanic. Couple things I learned in the process:
Bike chains are rated on “speed”, e.g. “11-speed”. But speed in this case doesn’t refer to the total number of bike speeds, but the number on the rear cogset (i.e., the rows of teeth on the back wheel). In my case, although my bike is 24-speed, I needed an 8-speed chain since my rear cogset had 8 rows of teeth.
To size the chain to your bike after purchase, wrap it around the largest rows on the front and back (without threading through the normal path which includes the jockey wheel) - you want one link of overlap. Remove any excess links.
Of course be sure to lubricate the chain when you’re done.
Most of what I’m learning is from “Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance” - great information in there. It’s not exactly a “bike maintenance for dummies” as it’s written with a little more lingo, but after spending time with it it starts to click and the wheels start to turn. ;) 🚲
