The Commonwealth Scam: Political Games
Commonwealth Games are the heartbeat of every athlete, and Indian athletes have been raising the bar of excellence high with their incredible performance. They have brought fame and pride to the country with their accolades.
Commonwealth games are a buzz as they serve as a gateway for podium performances to Olympics. Every four years, a host country is selected for the Commonwealth Games. In 2010, India was voted the host country. India chose Suresh Kalmadi as the chairperson of the organizing committee.
This person took the competition a bit too seriously, created the biggest scam, and outperformed Harshad Mehta. A scam worth a whopping ₹70,000 crores brought disgrace to the country in every aspect. The reports justified the dialogue of Shatrughan Sinha from Kalicharan, “Aaj ke zamaane mein toh baimaani hi ek aaisa dhanda reh gaya hai ... joh poori imaandari ke saath kiya jaata hai.”
So, let’s learn about the events that took place because of the Commonwealth scam in 2010.
What was the Commonwealth scam?
"Corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion are global problems, not just challenges for developing countries" - Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
The Commonwealth scam is remembered infamously as one of the biggest scams. The Commonwealth scam involved astounding pilferage of ₹70,000 crores, Suresh Kalmadi's mastermind. The organizing committee led by Suresh Kalmadi made extraordinary plans initially, but all the promises turned out into a national embarrassment.
As grandiose and well-thought-out as the scam was, the games' set-up was menial and way below par. How? The companies that were chosen to organise the event over-quoted prices but supplied poor-quality goods. These companies were preferred against those who provided the best prices for better quality equipment. The Committee of Inquiries signalled that Kalmadi and all his aid workers were involved and arrested.
Did You Know
India bagged 101 medals in the Commonwealth games 2010, including 38 gold medals.
What happened in the Commonwealth scam?
The commonwealth scam was a deep well of conspiracies and corruption. Many irregularities were found according to many reports, including one by Housing and Land Rights Networks (HLRN) and investigations by the CBI. These irregularities were as follows:
1. Overall Security and Infrastructure
The Government of India, 2010, conveyed that they spent lots of money on enhancing the infrastructure, security, and development of 20 cities for the Commonwealth Games. This expenditure was planned to make the cities attractive as tourist destinations, but the estimate was never revealed.
The workers appointed for the infrastructure were exploited with ruthless working hours, unjust pay cuts, and bad working conditions. An incident of a footbridge collapsing 12 days before the event happened at the site of the games. This mishap drew a lot of attention and questioned the safety of the spectators and athletes.
The initial estimated sports infrastructure was marked as ₹1,900 crores, which increased to ₹11,000 crores. Compared to the amount, the construction of various venues was done poorly. The vinyl flooring at the weightlifting site was peeling off, while the false ceiling at the table tennis facility collapsed.
Lalit Bhanot, the Secretary General of the Organising Committee (OC), said to the athletes, "Some false ceiling has fallen, which means nothing. These things happen even at your home."
In addition, the OC failed to meet the targetted deadline of 1 August for enhancing and constructing specific venues such as the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium's swimming pools, fields, and stadium tracks. Many swimmers fell ill and complained about the water's quality. Many more issues sprung up as the games continued. Commonwealth Games 2026 Australia:-
In the year 2026, a situation of doubt is being seen about the Commonwealth Games to be held in Australia. The Government of Victoria has now refused to host these games due to the increase in the budget. In the information given by the government there on July 18, it was told that due to doubling the budget for organizing these games, we are not fully able to host it.More than 20 events are to be organized in the Commonwealth Games 2026, in which more than 5 thousand athletes will participate. Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews informed about his decision to refuse the event in a press conference that we were approached by the Commonwealth Games Federation last year to host it. The Premier further said that when we got to host it last year At that time, the estimated expenditure for organizing these games was about Rs 15 thousand crores, but when we started preparing for it, now the current expenditure has increased to Rs 34 thousand crores. Therefore, taking a decision not to organize it, we have also informed the Federation about this decision. We have gone through many difficult situations. We cannot organize by reducing the money of school and hospital.
Federation expressed displeasure over the decision:-
The Commonwealth Federation has also expressed displeasure over Australia, which has hosted the Commonwealth Games 5 times so far, expressing its inability to organize such a sudden event. Regarding the decision of the Victoria government, the Federation said that they did not give us any information before taking this decision. During the conference in June, the budget was Rs 15,000 crore, which is now being said to be double. Keeping all the things in mind, we will take a conclusion on this soon. Read the full article

‘One-bout selection for Bajrang, Vinesh unfair’
Antim and Sujeet’s coaches respect elite wrestlers but feel two-stage selection trials do not provide a level playing field; one of them plans to meet IOA’s ad-hoc panel to lodge their protest
Tumblr media
CHENNAI: In an extraordinary move, wrestlers, their parents and coaches have come out in the open and spoken up against the alleged biases in the selection trials being held to pick up the national team for reputed tournaments. The two-stage Asian Games selection trials proposed by the ad-hoc committee to accommodate protesting wrestlers seem to have infuriated others as they plan to protest against the move by approaching the panel and registering their complaints. They felt this would put them under more pressure to perform. Moreover, the coaches felt the wrestlers will have to wait till August to know whether they would be part of the India team.
As reported by this daily a few days ago, the ad-hoc committee has decided to give six wrestlers — Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sangeeta Phogat, Sakshi Malik, Satyawart Kadian and Jitender Kinha — a chance to qualify for Asian Games as well as World Championships by competing in just one bout against the winners of the selection trials in their respective weight categories.
As per the proposal, others have to win trials in their respective weight categories before taking on these wrestlers, who had protested against the sidelined Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, in August.
“This is unfair. The same was the case in the past and now the panel, which was formed with the objective to remove such flaws, is following the same practice,” Vikas Bhardwaj, Antim Panghal’s childhood coach from Baba Lal Das Kushti Academy, Hisar, told this daily. Antim, India’s first-ever U-20 world champion, competes in 53kg, the weight category two-time Olympian Vinesh has made her own with her consistent show over the years.
And her coach is not the only one to raise his voice against the trials that may give undue advantage to the elite wrestlers. Dayanand Kalkar, father and coach of Sujeet, who is the 2022 national champion in 65kg, is also not pleased with the decision. It’s the same weight category wherein Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist and multiple medallist at the Worlds Bajrang competes. “If the ad-hoc panel wants to continue the malpractice then give Sujeet a bye as well since he is also the reigning national champion in 65kg,” Dayanand told this daily. Sujeet last year won U-20 Worlds bronze apart from winning gold in the Tunisia Ranking Series.
Apart from being the closest rivals of Vinesh and Bajrang in the country, both Antim and Sujeet are termed as India’s future. They had already faced off against the experienced duo in the past with Antim losing to Vinesh twice including the 2022 Commonwealth Games selection trials. Sujeet had competed against Bajrang once in the CWG trials closely losing the bout.
“During the CWG trials as well Bajrang was given direct entry into the semifinals. Sujeet had to win three bouts before competing against a relatively fresh Bajrang. We are not afraid and ready to take on Bajrang once again but by doing this (one bout for selection) the panel is not setting the right precedent. We will speak to the panel and lodge a complaint if needed,” added Dayanand.
Antim’s coach Vikas explained how such privileges given to senior wrestlers can affect upcoming grapplers both physically and mentally. “Antim will first have to overcome challenges from other wrestlers in the first trials. She will have to maintain her weight before the first trials. If she wins there, she has to do the same before the trials against Vinesh later. It can affect her physically as there wouldn’t be a big gap between the two trials. Besides, even if she wins the first trial, she will be under tremendous pressure as she knows she has to win another trial more than a month later against two-time Worlds medallist Vinesh.”
Antim and Sujeet have been training at their respective centres despite the ongoing turmoil in Indian wrestling ever since the protest began against Brij Bhushan in January. Given the hard work they have been putting in for months now, the coaches’ only demand is a level playing field. “Let the best wrestler win but for that to happen, you need to be fair to everyone irrespective of reputation and past laurels,” the coaches signed off.

Neeraj Chopra Feels All Prepped Up for Doha Diamond League and Budapest World Championships
Tumblr media
Because of the extended celebration of his gold win in August 2021 in the Javelin throw, he missed out on Tokyo Olympics last year. And Neeraj could return to competition only in June 2022 for Paavo Nurmi Games. And currently, he is in much better shape with solid training as Neeraj trained at several bases in three countries as well worked for six months on techniques and other pointers after his title in Diamond League final in September. He is prepared for the next month’s Doha Diamond League. Previously, when he started training last year, he did not feel quite strongly about the May 5, Doha competitions in terms of strength and fitness.
But now that his training is going well, he feels fitter mentally and physically, and with the competition coming close, he is having a good feeling about the competition. The first stop will be Doha. The season will be a long one with World Championships happening in Budapest till August and in Eugene where Diamond League final will go on till September along with Asian Games already postponed and happening at Hangzhou from September to October. Since last year, Neeraj is a better shape and has learned several lessons.
He won silver for the best throw of 88.13m in his fourth attempt at the 2022 Eugene World. But here he felt that his groin got overstretched in the spirit. Barely a month later, had the injury caused him not able to take part in the Commonwealth Games. He was in a good amount of pain and could not stop. But right now the focus is to have a healthy season ahead that is free of injuries. Neeraj Chopra has brought in a solid foundation this season as he was coached by Germany’s Klaus Bartonietz and helped by physio Ishaan Marwaha.
All of them have put in a lot of hard work over the last few months right from going to Loughborough University in the UK and earlier this year, moving to Potchefstroom and then this month, at Gloria Sports Arena in Antalya, Turkey. In South Africa, Neeraj worked on his throwing strength and added minor technical tweaks, and while in the UK, he worked on building stamina with the help of Powerbase gym and other facilities at Loughborough University. He confirmed the same that they tried to improve his technique and throwing strength as well as increase the strength of his throwing muscles.
These activities and training have made the young athlete confident, and his consistent performance in the 2022 season is the reason for his belief. He also set a record nationally at Stockholm with 89.94m. He wants to break the 90m mark and go the magical distance, especially this season. Neeraj said that he is not over-confident despite last year when he was too close to the competition. He feels good about the training going well and strongly believes that this time around the 90m will happen for him.
He does not follow what his competitors do except for their social media field. In this year’s competition, Neeraj will join Jakub Vadlejch (90.88), Doha Anderson Peters (PB: 93.07m), Julius Yego (92.72), and Keshorn Walcott (90.16). He is looking forward to sportsmanship and stated that greater things will ensue from Indian athletics. He also followed on Saturday at the Indian Grand Prix in Bengaluru and was happy that DP Manu clinched the game with a lead of 84.33m, just crossing over to 81.81m by Rohit Yadav.
Neeraj was glad about the performances, along with that of CWG triple jump champion Eldhose Paul and Shaili Singh, the long jumper. He was quite excited about things shaping up for Indian athletes.
