Odds & Ends: April 5, 2024

Killers of the Flower Moon. I was really excited to watch Martin Scorsese’s epic film, Killers of the Flower Moon. Based on the bestselling book that recounts the murders of members of the Osage Nation here in northeast Oklahoma in the 1920s, the movie didn’t disappoint. Like all of Scorsese’s historical films, he does a great job of getting the details right. You feel like you’ve been transported to 1920s Oklahoma. The acting is top-notch. Robert De Niro plays a great bad guy, Leonardo DiCaprio plays the part of a feckless wiener whose lack of moral compass leads him to tragedy, and Lily Gladstone captures the heartache of an Osage woman watching her family die around her. It was cool to see parts of OK that we’ve explored appear in a movie. Osage country is absolutely beautiful. Love those big skies and green hills. This movie is long — 3 and 1/2 hours — but worth it! Ace sunglasses. A few years ago, MVMT watches sponsored the AoM podcast and sent me a watch to try. They also included a pair of their Ace sunglasses. They look like the aviator shades Paul Newman wore in the 1970s. They’re funky and not something I would have picked out on my own. What is Altitude Sickness?

Symptoms vary but can include headache, lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain, all of which can last anywhere from 12 hours to 4 days.The higher you climb, the lower the air pressure, and the lower the oxygen level. Our bodies can tolerate the change, but they need the flexibility to readjust gradually.

What are the Different Types of Altitude Sickness?

Altitude sickness is typically divided into three different syndromes:

● Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS):

Deemed to be the most prevalent type, AMS includes symptoms usually associated with altitude sickness and hangovers: fever, weakness, lack of appetite, nausea, and frequent vomiting. Symptoms typically grow within 24 to 72 hours of acclimatization.

● High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE):

If AMS progresses, it can change into HACE, which includes the build-up of fluid in the brain. Symptoms include weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, and loss of balance. While hydration is an effective preventive and recovery technique, people with more extreme cases of altitude sickness often can not hold their water down. HACE is rare but life-threatening after only a few hours. The only possible cure is accurate treatment.

● High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE):

Generally, HAPE occurs at higher elevations and includes the build-up of fluid in the lungs. HAPE may happen to someone above 8,000 feet at any altitude. Also, professional individuals can experience it, but while training and conditioning are essential, no precautions are assured. Mild symptoms can include a dry cough and shortness of breath following mild exercise, but more extreme forms of HAPE include breathing problems at rest, confusion, and fever. The best way to relieve HAPE is to go down — oxygen and descent are life-saving and necessary.

1. Telehealth Will Become the New Normal

COVID-19 has transformed telehealth’s reputation from being an occasional option to a necessity. To slow the spread of the pandemic, recent legislation has allowed for greater expansion of telehealth.

Now more than ever, patients and healthcare providers have greater access to a vast array of telehealth services, such as:

Case in point, urgent care center provider Concentra stated that they “Implemented strict cleaning regimens that include frequent disinfection of door handles and other hard surfaces to help reduce and mitigate possible contamination.”

It takes around 66 days for a new habit to become permanent, according to a report by HealthLine. Depending on how long practices such as social distancing last, society may find itself adopting new protocols in workplaces and facilities that prioritize accountability when it comes to health.

In an interconnected society where touch is part of our culture, we’re becoming more aware that infectious disease is everyone’s problem.

3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Will Help Us Prevent Pandemics

It’s been reported that on Dec. 30, 2020, a machine utilizing AI successfully detected an “unusual bump in pneumonia cases in Wuhan (where the virus originated.” That was nine days before the World Health Organization (WHO) formally identified this occurrence as COVID-19. However, AI has its limits.

AI algorithms track reported accounts from sources, such as hospitals, the media, and governmental authorities. If these sources are over-reported or under-reported, AI can’t make an accurate prediction. Without consistent predictions, preventing the spread of disease remains a challenge.

By analyzing patient records, AI can more accurately predict trends to help society prepare resources, including a vaccine, to mitigate a public health disaster. However, digital companies — including AI technology vendors — must tread carefully due to HIPAA restrictions as well as public attitudes towards health privacy.

Now that we’re battling a pandemic where precise data to predict, diagnose, and to treat is imperative, the question begs to be asked: How much of our privacy are we willing to give up to prevent a future pandemic?

4. The Shortage of Healthcare Professionals Will Worsen

Prior to COVID-19, it was reported that the United States would face a projected shortage of 122,000 physicians by 2032 and 200,000 nurses for the year 2020. Among the reasons are:

A rapidly retiring older adult population, many of whom were hospital care providers themselves

Work burnout from feeling overburdened and understaffed, motivating hospital care providers to switch specialties or leave the field entirely

Lack of funding and faculty for educational programs, particularly for nursing and doctor residency programs

COVID-19 serves as the catalyst for public awareness of a healthcare system that was already under unsurmountable pressure from a lack of clinicians. Healthcare facilities are combating the current gaps in staffing in various ways, including:

Hiring temporary staff, such as travel nurses and locum tenens physicians

Providing an additional incentive to staff, like “hazard pay” or “crisis pay”

Utilizing telehealth services to decrease the influx of admissions into the hospital

It will be difficult to sustain the healthcare system without offering incentives and support to potential and existing healthcare workers.

5. Patients Will Expect More Expertise, Authenticity, and Innovation

In 2018, The New York Times stated that only 34% of Americans trusted medical leaders. Further, during the most recent disease outbreaks (like Ebola), less than one-third of the population trusted governmental public health officials. In 2020, with misinformation about the novel coronavirus running rampant, many people are being more discriminating regarding the information they’re being given.

Social media platforms, like Youtube and Instagram, as well as news reports have been unexpected channels for trusted healthcare providers to communicate their experience with providing medical care during this time. This level of authenticity earns respect and trust from health consumers.

Patient engagement is about building a meaningful connection with patients and tailoring services to meet patients’ unique needs. Christchurch massacre hero makes emotional return to shooting scene

The two heroes of the Christchurch mosque massacre have made an emotional return to the scene of the bloodshed.

Linwood mosque Imam Abdul Lateef Zirullah, better known as Brother Lateef, and ‘Eftpos machine hero’ Abdul Aziz, from Australia, were re-united for a traditional Maori ‘cleansing’ ceremony at the Linwood mosque, where the pair’s heroics saved many lives on Friday.

An emotional Mr Lateef broke down in tears during the service and was comforted by mourners, including a police officer who was seen laying a friendly hand on the Imam’s back.

The service was held just metres away from a growing mountain of flowers, and on a street where strangers have spent the weekend spontaneously hugging Muslims.

A picture of Mr Lateef soaked in blood has become one of the enduring images of the tragedy, which has been described as New Zealand’s ‘darkest day’ with the loss of 50 lives.

Mr Lateef was the first to spot gunman Brenton Harrison Tarrant and raise the alarm outside the second mosque on Friday afternoon, warning worshippers to get down.

Brother Lateef broke down in tears during a traditional Maori ceremony at the mosque. He was the first person to spot accused gunman Brenton Harrison Tarrant out the window and warned worshippers inside, saving countless lives

During Monday’s ceremony a policeman placed a comforting hand on the back of Mr Lateef as he broke down in tears

‘From the window, I sighted him (and) I thought maybe he was a policeman,’ Mr Lateef told Daily Mail Australia.

‘But then when I saw on the floor next to him was another (dead) lady, I said “no”.’

Mr Lateef could hear the killer’s muffled, but clearly offensive, yelling, through the window.

‘I can’t hear him very well clearly inside but I know he was saying something, like using this vulgar word,’ he said.

‘I realised he is amiss and something must be done. Initially people didn’t understand but eventually people got to know what happened.’

After being alerted to the gunman by Mr Lateef, Mr Aziz picked up the first thing he could find – an Eftpos machine – and ran to confront the attacker.

When he got outside Tarrant had returned to his car to swap guns.

When Tarrant returned to his car to get another gun Mr Aziz chased after him and hurled the gun at the car, shattering the windscreen and scaring him away

‘From the window, I sighted him… I thought he was a policeman,’ Brother Lateef said. He then noticed dead bodies outside the mosque and yelled out to the worshippers at Friday prayers

Mr Aziz then saw a discarded weapon on the ground and picked it up, before aiming at Tarrant and squeezed hard on the trigger – but it was empty.

‘He got into his car and I just got the gun and threw it on his window like an arrow and blasted his window… that’s why he got scared,’ Mr Aziz said.

Inside the mosque Mr Aziz said he could hear his two young sons, aged 11 and five, calling for him to come back inside.

Mr Lateef said he had seen the iconic photograph of his robe covered in blood just moments after the massacre.

‘I was trying to rescue some brothers,’ he said.

‘I was thinking I could do something to save their lives, but, unfortunately, some of them, most of them had passed.’

Mr Lateef said he was ‘very pleased’ with a Maori cleansing of the land and blessing, which was held at the mosque on Monday morning.

The ceremony, known as a karakia, is regularly held after tragic deaths and was organised by the staff of New Zealand deputy police commissioner Wallace Haumaha.

Mr Haumaha said the process was much like an indigenous Australian cultural ritual.

‘It’s important to have that cleansing,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘We use it … to ensure we have cleansed all the evilness – not so much evilness, but everything left behind by those deaths, to allow the living to move on.’

It came after a Maori gang earlier performed a touching haka during a memorial at the Al Noor mosque on the other side of Christchurch.

Around ten members of Black Power, which was first formed in 1970, gathered near the police cordon at the mosque to perform the ceremonial dance on Sunday.

The death toll from the terror attack has risen to 50, with new details about the innocent victims continuing to emerge.

They include, Junaid Ismail, 36, who left behind a wife, three young children and a mother who relied on him to care for her.

Another, Ansi Alibava, 25, was eagerly awaiting her graduation ceremony from her masters degree in May, while Hussein Al-Umari, 36, was a regular at the Masjid Al Noor mosque.

Also among the dead is Tariq Omar, 24, who is remembered for his kind and humble nature and was a former student of Cashmere High School in Christchurch.

Kamel Darwish, 38, who moved to Christchurch from Jordan six months ago and was awaiting the arrival of his wife and three children – was convinced to go to New Zealand by his brother, who had lived there since 2007 and said it was a ‘safe place to raise a family’.

Sixty-year-old Abdelfattah Qasem, from Palestine, was also killed on Friday at the Masjid Al Noor mosque – he was the Muslim Association of Canterbury’s former secretary.

Another among the dead is Musa Vali Suleman Patel, 60, who was visiting Christchurch to see his son and was a highly respected leader of the Fiji Muslim League – he left behind his wife Saira Bibi Patel, three daughters and two sons.

Ramiz Arifbhai Vora, 28, and his father Arifbhai Mohamedali Vora, 58, were both shot dead on Friday.

The 28-year-old lived and worked in Christchurch and had a baby daughter a week before he was killed in the vicious attack – his father was visiting him from India at the time.

Another among the victims is Maheboob Allarakha Khokhar, 65, who was due to return to India on Sunday after visiting his son in Christchurch.

Four-year-old Abdullahi Dirie was also named among the dead after both he and his father Adan were shot at one of the mosques, while four of his siblings escaped unhamed.

Abdullah’s family fled Somalia in the 1990s and made New Zealand their home, he was the youngest in his family.

Before he was brutally killed, Amjad Hamid, 57, was a senior Medical Officer and Rural Hospital Consultant at Hawera Hospital who has been remembered for his kindness, compassion and sense of humour.

Another among the victims is Mounir Soliman, 68, from Egypt who was a design engineer working at Scotts Engineering in Christchurch since 1997.

Zeehan Raza, 38, is also among those killed and was a mechanical engineer who moved to New Zealand from Pakistan in 2018 – both he and his parents Ghulam Hussain and Karam Bibi, were killed at the Linwood Masjid mosque.

Another believed to be among the dead is Bangladeshi Husna Parvin, who was reportedly gunned down as she tried to save her wheelchair-bound quadriplegic husband from the shooter.

Three-year-old Mucad Ibrahim died in the arms of his father and brother, who only survived because he played dead.

Mucad Ibrahim was attending Friday prayers with his father and older brother Abdi Ibrahim when a gunman stormed the al Noor mosque in Christchurch and opened fire on the worshippers.

It’s believed that at the time of the horrific attack, Mucad ran from the gunman while his father and brother played dead.

Tarrant dismissed his lawyer on Monday morning and now plans to represent himself in future court proceedings.

Richard Peters said the gunman had informed him he wanted to represent himself as his case heads to a trial.

Mr Peters said while the decision may seem irrational, Tarrant appeared to be ‘clear and lucid’, and did not appear to be mentally unstable.

Tarrant never told him why he wanted to represent himself, but Mr Peters said he ‘presumes the basis for that is that he thinks the job would be done better himself’.

The shock decision has raised concerns Tarrant will use what will be a high-profile murder trial as a platform to spread hate and vile anti-Muslim rhetoric.

‘I suspect that he won’t shy away from publicity, and that will probably be the way he runs the trial. The job of the trial judge will be to deal with that,’ Mr Peters said.

‘But it’s not a place for any views to be put forward. It’s simply there to determine innocence or guilt.

‘The court is not going to be very sympathetic to him if he wants to use the trial to express his own views.’

Tarrant is currently facing one charge of murder, but more charges are expected to be laid in the coming days.

The 28-year-old who grew up in Grafton, in regional New South Wales, live-streamed his alleged attack on Facebook.

He did not apply for bail or for his name to be suppressed during a brief appearance in court on Saturday, and is expected to front the High Court on April 5.

These Cremains-sniffing Dogs Help Desperate Forest Fire Victims Reunite with Lost Ashes

It was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California, and the world’s costliest natural disaster of 2018. The Camp Fire, as it was called (after the name of the road on which it originated), started on the morning of November 8. By the time it was 100 percent contained 17 days later, it had claimed the lives of at least 86 people–with three persons still missing.

As evacuation orders were lifted in mid-December, Lynne Engelbert and her dog Piper were among the very few non-residents allowed within the neighborhoods where more than 10,000 homes and businesses were completely destroyed. Clad in hazmat suits and protective gear, Engelbert and her team of handlers from the non-profit Institute for Canine Forensics (ICF), along with a team of archaeologists, were there with their specially-trained dogs to help displaced families pick through what was left of their homes and locate some of their most treasured possessions–the cremated remains of loved ones.

“I can’t tell you how many times we heard residents say, ‘All I want out of this house is my husband’s or my grandmother’s ashes,’” Engelbert recalls. “These families are devastated.”

A new and very special skill

As volunteers for the Bay Area-based ICF, which was founded in 1998 by emergency responder Adela Morris, Engelbert, her border collie Piper, and other members of the team are usually called upon to identify the final resting places of long-dead historic and prehistoric human remains. Working on behalf of federal agencies, Native American tribes, and historic preservation groups, the canines of ICF are rigorously trained and semi-annually recertified to detect the very weak scent of remains that have been buried up to 10 feet deep for hundreds or even thousands of years. The group was even invited by National Geographic to investigate a specific spot on a remote Pacific island where missing aviator Amelia Earhart is suspected to have perished more than 80 years ago.

It was only in 2017 that ICF recognized the need for a noninvasive method for detecting cremains amid the ashes of burned homes. An archaeologist reached out to the team after learning that a man who had lost his home in the October 2017 Santa Rosa wildfire, was desperately looking for someone to help him identify the cremains of his parents within the rubble.

“He told us that he hadn’t yet done what he was supposed to do with the cremains,” Engelbert says, explaining that many clients share similar reasons for wanting to recover their loved ones’ ashes. Whether they promised the deceased that the ashes would be commingled with those of a spouse, spread in a special location, or even shot out of a cannon (a true story, says Engelbert), the person entrusted with the cremains cannot rest until they are located.

“It’s more than a want,” says Engelbert. “It’s a need.”

Getting the word out

Because many prehistoric cultures practiced cremation instead of inhumation, ICF routinely trains on donated human cremains in addition to the human bones and teeth used for historic human remains detection. In an actual cremains recovery project, metal crematory identification discs or tags amid the ashes provide additional verification that the dogs have indeed alerted upon the appropriate target.

Engelbert vividly remembers that first search for cremains at the Santa Rosa home. “Piper alerted on the cremains within two minutes,” she recalls. With no trowel handy with which to scoop up the cremains (the family’s garden tools were somewhere within the eight inches of ash that had once been their shed), the client fished an empty tuna can out of a partially-melted garbage can to transfer the ashes into plastic zipper bags that Engelbert provided.

Aided by word of mouth and newspaper coverage of Piper’s unique ability, the ICF team has since voluntarily located cremains for other families affected by the Tubbs wildfire in Santa Rosa as well as the Woolsey wildfire in Malibu in addition to the recent Camp Fire location. Out of these first recoveries was born the collaborative “Cremains Recovery Team” of specially-trained ICF canines and handlers, Alta Archaeological Consulting, and Environments Science Associates.

During the first visit to the Camp Fire site, the Cremains Recovery Team worked with 24 families to recover cremains left behind as residents frantically fled the encroaching flames. An even larger volunteer team of canines, handlers, and archaeologists joined in the search in late December and mid-January. At least one more search rotation is planned for late January.

“We’ve only touched maybe ten percent of the people who kept cremains in their homes,” says Engelbert. “When there’s a fire we try to find someone who can get flyers to these families while they’re temporarily housed in shelters so they can reach out to us.”

“We found Erin.”

For Engelbert, each recovery is an act of love and compassion that’s very personal to her. “We get the name of the deceased before we start the search, and we call them by that name,” she shares. “Instead of looking for ‘the cremains’ we’re looking for Mary or Grandpa Joe.”

After reading about the first family’s experience in her local newspaper, Lenore Hansen, a resident of Santa Rosa, contacted Engelbert to request Piper’s services. Hansen wanted to locate the cremains of her daughter Erin, who had died from cancer ten years earlier at the age of 32. With dogs Piper and Annie in tow, Engelbert and a fellow ICF volunteer met Hansen at the site of her ruined home. Within minutes of searching, Piper and Annie lay down amid the ash at the former location of Hansen’s closet, where Erin’s cremains had been kept.

“We found Erin,” Engelbert said to Lenore Hansen, whose tears were a mixture of joy and fresh grief.

Engelbert would like to have more stories like this to share, and along with other ICF members she is doing everything possible to bring their services to the attention of federal agencies like FEMA who respond to wildfires and other disasters. Ideally, cremains recovery would be incorporated into the already existing disaster recovery process. The line item “Did you have human cremains in your home?” would be added to the standard questionnaire that families complete for such agencies after a disaster. If the answer is “yes,” the services offered by ICF and the Cremains Recovery Team would be incorporated into the clean-up process.

“We’re knocking on the doors of local legislators,” says Engelbert, “just trying to find someone who understands and can help.”
