After an awkward moment passed while you cringed internally at your failed joke, he finally guided you across the house to where the piano was; you set your toolbag down beside it, stepping back to admire the instrument.  “It’s gorgeous,” you told him.

“How long have you been playing?” you asked.  “Or are you one of those people who keeps it mostly for decoration.”

“Decoration?” he repeated incredulously.  “Do people do that?”

“Yeah,” you nodded, “more often than not I end up doing cosmetic repairs instead of internal ones because families are basically using this as the most expensive object possible to put framed family photos on.”

"Right,” you noted, messing around with the keys near the top to check what he’d said, “well, they do that, especially out here with these cold winters making the strings tighten up.  Should be fixable."

“Great,” he smiled.

“Alright, pretty girl, let’s take a look at your guts,” you grinned, groaning a bit as you lifted the heavy lid to see the strings inside.  "It's in great shape,” you observed aloud, “this can't be more than a few years old."

"Yeah, I got it pretty recently actually.  It's never been tuned before."

"Oh, this is its first time?" you smirked, leaning in to whisper to the strings: "don't worry, I'll be gentle."

He blushed a little as he laughed, making you pretty sure your joke hadn't gone too far.

“You, uh, don’t have to be around for this part,” you informed him.  “I mean, unless you want to, but it’ll just be me messing around in here for a few hours.

“No, I’ll give you some space,” he decided, “just let me know if you need anything.  Do you want, like, water or something?”

“I’m fine, but thanks,” you dismissed, “just continue as if I wasn’t here.”

“Oh, you don’t wanna see that,” he disagreed, looking like he regretted saying it as soon as he finished his sentence.  You felt your face warm and hoped he just meant that he’d be eating cheetos out of the bag in his underwear and not anything more… mature.  

As he awkwardly shuffled away, you opened your toolbox and got to work.  Your first task was to get a pitch reader so you could figure out how well-tuned each string was— you set that on the soundboard and got to work testing keys and reading the little digital display of your device.  Once that told you how much work each key needed, it was easy to just put your tuning hammer on one pin at a time, loosening or tightening until the pitch was just right.  You couldn’t just start at one side and tune all the way up to the other, oh no, there was a very specific ideal tuning order that you’d memorized by now: first the middle strings of the octaves from C3 to C5, then the one of each of the unison strings in the double bass section, then the middle strings from C5 to C8, then the lower single bass strings, then every left string of all the unisons from C3 to C8, then the rest of the double bass section, and finally all the right strings from C3 to C8.

Easy peasy, right?

It actually sort of would be, if you hadn’t gotten stuck on the unison bass string of E flat 3, your tuning hammer suddenly unable to turn even when you tried to brace yourself against the piano for some leverage.

"Um, Mr. Evans?" you called out.

"Yup!" he answered, swinging out from the entryway instantly— he must have been waiting just outside, which made you feel a little like you were being spied on.  

"Would you maybe come over here and use your manly-man strength on this?"

"My what now?" he laughed, walking towards you.

"You know," you explained by flexing your biceps and making a sort of serious face; your charades version of what a muscular man looked like, apparently.

"Oh, I see," he nodded, "my—" and he repeated the charade, except it made your face warm and your eyes all but bulge out of your head.  That was him jokingly flexing?!  What did he look like when he was actually trying to show his muscles?

You tore yourself from that train of thought as he leaned over the edge of the piano, gripping the tuning hammer you'd left on the pin there.

"This one?" he asked.

"Yeah, just give it a little nudge counter-clockwise, please."

He did it like it was no trouble at all.

"You could've at least pretended it was difficult," you rolled your eyes.

"No, you loosened it up for me," he winked.  WINKED.  Was he trying to kill you or something?  "Chris is fine," he said abruptly.

Chris is fine indeed, your brain supplied instantly.  "I'm sorry?" you choked out aloud instead.

"You can call me Chris, I mean," he explained.  "You called me Mr. Evans before."

"Oh, right," you nodded.  "Chris.  Thanks for your help with that, Chris."

"Sure thing," he smiled.

Just as the conversation began to lull, you could hear the dog whining and scratching at the back door, and you felt so guilty that he had been left outside.  “You can let the dog back in, you know,” you suggested, “I don’t mind.”

“I shouldn’t,” he shook his head, “he’ll jump all over you and stuff…”

“No, really, it’s fine, I love dogs,” you assured him.

“Alright, just prepare yourself,” he chuckled a little as he slipped over to the back door to let the dog in.  Running past his owner instantly and straight to you, you knelt down to let it lick your face as you laughed.

“Hi puppy!” you greeted.  “Oh, thank you for the kisses, it’s nice to meet you!”  He calmed down a bit when you scratched behind his ears, wiggling and putting his paws up on your knees.  “What’s his name?” you asked, turning your attention to Chris who had his arms crossed and a prideful smile on his face.

“Dodger,” he informed you with a nod.

“Aw, hi Dodger,” you cooed at the pup, “I’d sit here and pet you all day, but your dad’s not paying me to play with you— apparently.”

Chris laughed a bit as you stood up, and Dodger actually took it pretty well, dashing to curl up on the nearest couch as you got back to work on the piano.

“I’ve never heard a piano plucked before,” he observed, leaning in to watch you work.

"I'll leave the musical experimentation to you," you decided, "and I'll stay on this side of the action board."

"See, I didn't even know that was a part of the piano," he admitted.

"And that's why you're on that side."

You two chatted while you worked— he asked some questions about you, you asked some questions about him, classic small talk sort of stuff.  He managed to keep it interesting, though, and keep you laughing throughout the whole conversation.  It was significantly more fun than you usually had during house calls like this, and instead of distracting you it actually seemed to help you keep your focus.  It was easier to talk to him when you could keep your eyes on the strings anyways: looking right at him was sort of overwhelming.

With the last string adjusted, you slipped the tuning hammer into your back pocket and dusted off your hands as you stepped back to admire your work.

"That's it?" he asked as he stood up from the couch, noticing the signs of completion.

"It is if it sounds good!" you smiled.  "Go ahead, take it for a spin," you suggested.  "Play something and tell me if it sounds how you want."

"Okay," he nodded, slipping around the bench and sliding onto it.  He took a breath before he placed his hands on the keys, but then suddenly stopped and set them back on his lap with a sigh as he turned to you.  "Um, it's a little weird with you watching me."

"Oh, are you not used to performance?"

"Not outside of my family and friends and stuff, no."

"I don't really have to be here for this part, as long as you're happy with it then that's fine," you shrugged, "but you know, I wanna be able to fix any issues while I'm still here—"

"No, it’s not a big deal," he shook his head quickly, "I should get over myself.  I guess it's just scary cause you've probably heard people a lot better than me play…"

"Don't worry about that," you laughed, "just play something, really, I won't judge."

He spun back to face the keys, placing his hands on them— for a second you wondered if he struggled to hit just one key at a time with those thick fingers, but you pushed that thought away quickly.

As he started to play, you found yourself focusing on the music more than the sound of the keys like you should've been.  He was good, actually, although you could hear the hesitance in the way he played.  He didn't rush as much as most people did, though; he was savoring the piece, one note at a time, and you let your eyes fall shut as he continued to play.

You broke from your trance when he suddenly stopped, repeating the phrase he'd just finished and stopping on the same note.

"Does this one sound kinda… off to you?" he asked.

"Um," you paused, "play it again?"

He poked the key with one finger a few times, and you frowned.  "I can't really tell." You stepped forward and leaned over his shoulder, caging his body in accidentally as your arms wrapped around his shoulders to fiddle with the keys in front of him.  You rested your knee on the bench beside his legs, not even realizing that it was a massive invasion of his personal space until you were already in it.

He moved his hands out of the way so you could repeat the phrase, and although you didn't hear anything wrong, you felt the key sticking.

"Oh," you mumbled to yourself, "it's the key, not the string."

"Can you fix it?" he asked looking up at you.

"Yeah, I—" you stopped in the middle of your word as you looked back at him because his face was really close, so close that his bright blue eyes were burning right through you; so close that you completely lost your train of thought.  "I can fix anything," you finished softly.

"Great," he whispered back, eyes seeming to glance down to your lips quickly before moving back up to meet your gaze.

You cleared your throat as you stepped back, giving him space again as you nervously crossed your arms.  "It's probably just something stuck under there or whatever, but I can order a replacement key if not."

"Right," he agreed with a nod, sliding to the side of the bench to give you room to fiddle with it.  You grabbed your smaller toolkit and sat beside him, starting with your flashlight to see if there was anything hiding underneath there.

Moving to peer behind the action frame, you realized it was a problem with the hammer hitting the string— or, more specifically, with the mechanism that kept the hammer balanced.  All you had to do was reach in with a long screwdriver and shift some parts around, and it seemed to be back in working order.

“Play it again?” you requested, and he slid back to the middle and started the piece over.  He grinned when he reached the part he’d stopped at before, flying through the phrase without stopping.

“Hey!  You fixed it!” he beamed.

“I’m a genius,” you shrugged, smirking a little.  He stopped playing and you found yourself a little disappointed by that, unexpectedly.  “Any other musical ailments I can magically cure for you today?”

“Unless you can make me a better sight reader, that’ll be all,” he smiled, standing up from the bench.

“Ah, if I could do that, I’d be using that power on myself.”

He shrugged; "Fair enough."

"Well, I'll leave you to it then," you announced as you put the last of your tools away and picked up your bag.  "Hope I didn't disrupt your day too much."

"You did, actually— in a good way," he grinned.  "I definitely learned a lot more than I was going to just watching TV and drinking beer."

You followed him back to the front door, which he opened for you.  "You can always give us a call if you need anything.  Um, anything piano-related, that is.  Tell the dog I said goodbye, okay?"

Chris smiled a little, softer than his normal expression.  "I'll be sure he gets the message."

As you got back in your car, you took a minute to just catch your breath for the first time since you'd gotten here.  Trying to be funny and cute and charming when all you wanna do is stutter and gawk and melt is exhausting!  As enjoyable as it was, in a certain sense, you were relieved at the idea of returning to your routine— which typically did not include super hot dudes chatting you up at work.

“This must be a mistake,” you shook your head as you showed the work order form to your boss, “I was at this address two weeks ago, the piano’s in perfect condition.”

“Well, he has an unlimited warranty, so either something happened since you were there last, or you fucked something up when you were there last, or he’s just determined to get his money’s worth out of us,” she explained without looking up from her computer.

You sighed and left, heading back to the same address and hoping you weren’t about to get chewed out for somehow ruining Chris’ like-new piano.

Knocking on the door, you found yourself chewing your lip as you waited for him to answer the door.  You were a little surprised when he answered in a button-up and slacks— entirely opposite to pajamas, although you sort of missed that get-up if you were being honest.

“Hey,” he greeted with a grin, stepping back to motion for you to come inside.

“Hi,” you responded awkwardly as you stepped past him.  “Is... everything alright with the piano?  I didn’t damage it, did I?”

He cleared his throat as he shut the door behind you, the size of the hallway forcing the two of you to stand slightly closer together than you would’ve personally preferred; it was hard to focus with him so close, sometimes.  “No, no, it’s not that,” he answered, “the piano’s fine, I just…” he stammered a little, starting over.  “Uh, there was something I wanted to ask you about last time, and I called the Steinway store but I couldn’t figure out how to call you specifically, so I just had to make a new tuning appointment.”

You furrowed your brow with confusion, not sure why someone else on the phone couldn’t answer whatever question he had, but decided to let him go through with his thought.  “What did you wanna ask me?”

“Uh, I just wanted to ask you… out,” he finished plainly.

You paused as you processed that.  “Out?”

“Like, I was wondering if you’d wanna… go out, with me.”

You hoped your face didn’t give away all of your shock, but at the same time, you figured it probably did.

He winced as you continued to stare at him in silence.  “I’m kind of out on a limb here,” he reminded you.

“Right, I’m sorry,” you shook your head, “um, I guess I’m just sort of surprised because you’re, like… hot, and stuff.”

“And stuff?”

“Yeah, like… nice…” you explained.

“Hot and nice?” he laughed.  “Slow down, you’ll give me an ego.”

You laughed, too, and less nervously than you expected.  Feeling the rare urge to be spontaneous, you scratched your neck as you prepared to propose an idea.  “Listen, so, this might be crazy but... I have another appointment today, at the Symphony Hall— it’s a final tune-up on the pianos and harps before this massive concerto thing and they always let me stay to watch the performance afterwards.  If you came with me, I could get you in for free.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, I mean, you probably have better things to do today—”

“I don’t,” he refuted.

“And if you just wanted to, like, get lunch some time then that would be great, I just thought I might as well invite you to hear the chamber orchestra from the best seat in the house,” you shrugged.

“The best seat?” he questioned incredulously.  “And where is that?”

“The rafters,” you laughed.

And that was how you and Chris ended up sitting on the steel catwalk suspended on the ceiling of the Boston Symphony Hall, dangling your feet over the edge as the sounds of the concerto echoed out from the stage, over the silent audience and, finally, up to you two.

The music was incredible, if a little quiet from where you were listening, and so soothing that you felt compelled to close your eyes and focus on the sound.  You were partial to the piano, as always, but the violins and cellos in harmony made your chest warm unexpectedly.  Or maybe that was from the feeling of Chris’ gaze on you, as you opened your eyes to find him looking at your face rather than the performance below.  

“What are you looking at me for?” you asked him with a nervous laugh.

“For fun,” he shrugged.

“Doesn’t seem very exciting,” you scoffed, looking back to the stage.

“Oh, it’s exciting,” he mumbled his reply as he returned his gaze to the performance as well.  

Your cheeks burned when you heard that, in spite of the fact that it was actually a bit drafty in the auditorium.  Even though your nerves were buzzing with anxiety, a rush of bravery struck you and suddenly you were leaning your head onto his shoulder.  Just the warmth of him through his shirt— hell, even the smell of his cologne— somehow managed to relax you and energize you simultaneously.  His hand gingerly slipping around your waist was even better.

After this many years of tuning pianos, it felt like you were getting yourself in tune for the first time.

Chapter 6 feat. 2 symposiums

 The whole voyage to the Piraeus had been a marvel for Glaukos. He’d sat alongside professional rowers, sampled some of the vintages in the cargo hold, and had listened to the captain talk about naval stories he could have only dreamed about a few days ago. Every word out of his mouth had been some sort of question. As they were unloading onto the dock, saying good-bye to the sailors he felt fast friends with, he had some more for Tydeus.

 “Why did you bring the horse?” Piling the leggy creature onto the boat had been a feat in itself, though it didn’t try to launch itself into the sea like Glaukos had feared. “I learned a long time ago from an old Persian, people take you a lot more seriously when you’re on top of a big horse.” Xanthe seemed happy to be on dry land, judging from her swishing tail. Or maybe she just had to poop again.

“Also I didn’t want to walk from the Piraeus to Athens again. She should be able to hold both of us for that short ride.” he casually vaulted onto the saddle. “Get on.” Glaukos looked at the horse. In his hamlet, only the richest man in town had a horse, and that one looked more like a large dog compared to this Persian beast. So although Glaukos had groomed a horse a few times, he’d never actually ridden one, much less jumped onto one’s back. “Yeah sure, let me just…” He tried to get his leg over its back, but he could only get up to the calf and had no leverage. “Never ridden a horse before?” Tydeus sighed, “I really should have seen that coming.” He turned around and pulled him on.

 “Just hold onto my belt, and don’t just sit flat or you’ll be in a world of hurt.” What other way is there to sit? Xanthe started moving right after Tydeus gave her reins a snap. She didn’t even walk, just moved straight to a high-kneed trot. Doesn’t hurt at all, it’s smoother than a boat ride! Tydeus whistled. “Well would you look at that, here I was thinking Persians just trained their horses to lift their knees like that for show! Instead they’ve got them giving rides smoother than butter.” “How do you know so much about Persians?” asked Glaukos. Secretly, he had been worrying that Tydeus had been some sort of mercenary for the Great King. “I was in the interior of Ionia with my friend, Alkyone’s father. His father had some shipping interests there, and well, you can’t really get along there unless you know Persian. And there may have been some political interests there, too.”

“So you weren’t exiled for being a mercenary?”

“Perish the thought. I’m exiled because every Theban is an exile now.” Glaukos gasped. He had heard about the destruction of the city of Thebes. Even in his sleepy village there had been arguments, that Thebes was one of the most ancient cities of the Hellenes, but it had aided the Persians during the previous wars and couldn’t be trusted. No wonder they had had “political interests.”

“So you’re--”

“Now that we’re nearing the city I’d rather not talk about such sensitive topics. Your job is to pack away my things and keep your ears open for, the mood of the city, threats… anything that seems important.” He took out a discrete pouch, Glaukos held back a gasp when he opened it. There were dozens more plaques and some gold Darics. He felt a bit resentful, compared to all this, what Tydeus had given his father was a pittance.

“This should be enough if you feel the need to grease anyone’s palm” Tydeus counted out three of the gold coins, stamped with a golden profile and narrow wedges of the Persian alphabet. “I’ll be going through the front of the house, you’ll have to go out back with the horse.”

It feels so good to be back in a civilized place, Alkyone reflected as a cosmetic slave put the finishing touches on her hair. After a bone deep warm bath and massage, she felt alive again. They had taken Marduniya to a separate part of the house, obviously he couldn’t be allowed in the women’s quarters. She found herself hoping the Persian was being treated well, almost dying twice in a fortnight was something to be pitied.

She hadn’t met with her host yet, but she was invited to the beginning of his dinner. Usually men and women dining together would be a breach of etiquette, but it was the feast of [idk]. A translucent scarlet cochineal veil was pinned in place over her bun, so that the color mingled with her bright yellow crocus dyed chiton. Sandals with gilding on the edges provided the finishing touch.

She allowed herself to be led through the narrow hallway to the lush courtyard. The klines had been arranged around an eel pond with white egrets stalking amongst them. She could see Nothon sharing a kline with the man who she presumed was Lethos, a woman seated by herself and another man opposite them. Hadn’t Tydeus called him a thug in Tyrian purple? The man was squat, with the kind of lumpy swollen ears you would find on a boxer. And he had on a white robe with wide purple stripes. He leaned forward as he saw her approaching, “Nothon, please introduce us to this sweet dove you’ve had the good fortune to travel with!”

“Lethos, Alketas, Phanessa, this is dear Alkyone, who has so patiently and good-naturedly persevered with the terrible hand dealt to her by exile.” His speech has really shaped up in front of “the boss.” The woman, Phanessa, smiled, “I’m so happy to be the one to tell you that you can make your home here, my dear.”

“You have already been so kind to me, Despoina, I cannot thank you enough,” Alkyone inclined her head.

“The pleasure is ours, Alkyone, daughter of Podaleirus. The families of great patriots should not be allowed to be cast out by the tyrannical regime.” said Lethos, lifting his arm in a magnanimous gesture.

“Now please, if you would share a kline with my wife and drink with us.” Usually ladies of good stature would leave just before the first drinks were served, but Alkyone had heard that those kinds of things were looser the further you got from the mainland. She climbed onto the kline, and Phanessa gave her a motherly squeeze on the shoulder. A large, tattooed Thracian appeared to hand her a full cup. She was surprised, men like that were usually sent to work in mines, or at their most domestic worked as stable grooms, not household staff due to their dangerous nature. This one seemed demure enough though, his eyes were downcast but he didn’t spill a drop. “To the continued health of Alkyone Podaleirid and democracy,” Lethos raised his cup.

“Also, might I add, to the continued good health of Tydeus son of Medon” Alkyone raised hers in turn. “Of course!” Alkyone took a deep sip. Oh my, some eastern vintage, and unwatered at that! Perhaps this wasn’t civilized country after all. The other man, Alketas, still hadn’t spoken, but she didn’t want to appear too forward by addressing him, but Lethos spoke to him next. “It seems King Alexander has, if inadvertently, struck a blow for democracy by freeing Sardis, now that he has defeated the Great King at Issus, who knows what will happen.”

“I doubt very much it was inadvertent, he has said from the first that he wishes to free the Greek cities of Asia from barbaric despotism.” Alketas had a smooth voice, but what he was saying struck Alkyone as unpleasant.

“Ironic that he should make such a claim after putting the Greek cities of Greece under fear of destruction unless they submit to him,” Alkyone sniffed. Usually she wouldn’t have been so forward, but she felt safe in the present company… it also could have been the wine. It was truly excellent, she took another sip. Alketas looked at her with cold blue eyes, “Alas, but did not Thebes fight against Ionian independence in the Persian Wars? If the King of the Macedonians wants to right the wrongs of that time, perhaps his strategy was part of that.”

“Oh, well how should Macedon be punished under his grand plan, did they not send a contingent to fight with the Great King as their loyal vassals?” Alkyone shot back and took another draught to punctuate her point. It was definitely the wine.

“What gives Macedonians the right to be saviours of the Hellenes? They were just some hill tribe, basically Illyrians until that King Philip was educated in Thebes. And even so he still had 7 wives like a barbarian.” Alketas’s nostrils flared, but his voice stayed cold and smooth, “The Macedonians are as Hellene as you or I. Hercules fathered their line of kings.”

“Didn’t he father the Scythian tribes as well? I don’t hear anyone calling them our fellow Hellenes. He even left those sons a belt and a bow, maybe he thought them more legitimate.”

“I see you are still distraught over the regrettable loss of Thebes.” He looked down his nose at her.

“Yes dear, your nerves must be so frayed, Nothon told us about that awful shipwreck you were in. It was just nearing time to retire anyhow.” Phanessa’s hand gripped like a claw, but as she tried to get up, she felt her head spin. Wine was wine, but this sort of effect seemed excessive. Phanessa was right next to her but she could barely hear her when she said “Nothon, take her to bed.” The last thing she felt were Nothon’s arms around her as she slipped off to sleep.

A/N: There are probably still like a thousand mistakes in this ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Also, all the fighting is like super, super quick and only within the span of a few minutes. Also, as fanfic writer I’m entitled to do whatever the fuck I want and you can’t stop me.

The following morning, they leave again with a new set of respect and trust. Instead of messing around with weapons, Ashira decided to stay in the pilot’s seat, mindlessly fidgeting with a dagger as she stared out to the stars. This gave Loki time to rack his brain for everything he knew of Greek mythology. 

“Athena,” Loki declares after five hours. 

Loki’s voice causes Ashira to jump from her seat. The pure white dagger clatters to the ground, droplets of blood with it after knocking her thumb. Her right hand flies to grasp her chest, her left lifting to her lips to stop the bleeding.

“Do not scare me like that, oh my god.” Ashira exhales loudly. “I could have just sent us anywhere, fuck.” 

“Athena,” Loki claims again, coming to stand in front of Ashira. “If she is Selene and translations are messy, Athena. Or Artemis.” 

Ashira laughs at his far too focused face. “Surprised? Athena is not a tall, glorious warrior yet instead is a short, kind of chubby runaway.” 

“I mean Norse mythology claims I gave birth to Odin’s horse... so I know things get sloppy.” 

Ashira blinks a few times to try and adjust her reality, ensuring what he just said is real. Rumors and stories always have a drop of truth to them and thinking he gave birth to a horse is not something you just make up out of thin air. 

“I don’t even want to know why they would think that.” 

Loki shrugs with a smile before it fades just as quickly as it happened, a suddenly confused twist to his features. “Then why are you so weary of magic? Wasn’t Hecate like the Goddess of Magic."

“Her name is Helene, Selene’s younger sister.” Ashira leans her head back. “And no, not really. She was just a major drama queen, like her sister.”

“So then why is Greek mythology so full of mysticism and magic?”

Ashira raises a brow as if it is so obvious. “It’s called high tech science that humans weren’t able to make sense of.” 

“I have a hard time believing that.” Loki slips into the co-pilot seat. “There is amazing technology on Asgard and we still use and practice magic.” 

“That’s fine with me.” Her head tilts back upright. “You’ll see.” A mildly evil grin appears on her face. “You’ll see.”

And he does see, three days later.

They landed on a planet Loki has already forgotten the name of about four miles outside of the closest village (forget city) yesterday. Today Loki is sitting beneath one of the trees in the prairie while Ashira sorts through her weapons. While he much rather be inside where it is cooler, after he witnessed her grabbing a a live bomb seconds before it touched the ground and detonated, he decided to hang outside. 

Surprisingly enough, he isn’t in the mood to die, especially by the hands of stupidity on her part.

So he doesn’t think of anything of the sounds of her walking around the opening in the field as she has already done so several times to layout various equipment. 

Ashira then towers in front of him, the bit of sun he was using to read blocked by the secondary shadow. 

“Here.” A pure black dagger falls on top of Loki’s book. 

It’s entirely matte and unbelievably smooth everywhere but a few spots along the handle where there is clearly texture added to help the grip. 

“What’s this?” He asks. 

“A dagger,” she replies slowly. “I assumed you knew.” 

Loki scowls. “Of course I did. Why did you give it to me?” 

She shrugs. “I’m bored.” 

“So you’d like me to kill you?” Loki questions, mildly concerned about her phrasing. 

“I want you to fight me.” 

Loki finally looks up from his novel to the person blocking his sunlight. Ashira is standing above him, right arm across her body so both hands can rest on her jutted left hip, yet another different outfit donning her body. This one is unusual however: it is simply very short shorts and a tight half-length top without sleeves, both in the same deep royal blue as the items he has identified were likely either standard issue or part of a uniform from her home world. Her hair is braided back into a ponytail for once instead of its normal partly down or entirely braided state. 

And gosh, it’s long even when tied up.  

How fast does her hair grow? 

“You want me to fight you?” 

“I’m bored and haven’t gotten in any real fights recently and you’ve done sparring before so why not?” 

Loki shrugs. “I must ask before we begin: the outfit, standard training wear from your home?” 

Ashira looks down at her clothes, even picking up her right foot to observe her specialized ankle height shoes. 

“Only worn for running and weightlifting, not for this kind of training but it’s hot and my armor is buried deep among other stuff.” 

“You still have your armor?” 

“Of course. I still have everything. It was my ship I took to get off Hala.” 

Loki’s brows furrow. “Wait you escaped Hala? I thought you escaped your home?”

Ashira’s eyes narrow as her face twists at his stupidity. “Has all the chatter on the radio talking about also trying to attack the Kree been erased from your mind or are you just stupid?”

“I just don’t get why you would be there.”

“They have bodies to spare to test powers and also it was decided I would be better suited in their facilities while things were figured out.” Ashira shrugs, ignoring the annoying tiny nagging voice in the back of her mind reminding her that they promised to be honest with each other. “Until of course it was no longer about testing and more about training. Their little experiment program, Inhumans, was then a good source of bodies. Powered enough to face off, not powered enough to actually hurt me.”

Loki nods. “So they kept you there.”

“So they kept me there.”

Loki looks down at the dagger, twisting it between his hands. “Alright, I’ll fight.” 

“But no magic and I won’t accidentally disintegrate myself, deal?”

“Can I at least have more than one dagger?”

“Summon it now.” 

Loki summons a second dagger, changing it to match the one Ashira gave him. He admits this all black look is nice. He stands and carefully leaves the book by the tree. 

“And exactly what will you be fighting with?”

“If I need anything, I can grab it,” Ashira smiles. “I’ll be fine.”

“Alright. But I have to ask you something that has been bothering me now that you are basically baring yourself to me, what’s with all the scars? Do you normally hide them with cosmetics or something?” Loki asks, twirling around the daggers. 

“Cosmetics?” Ashira chuckles. “No, a biomorphic nanomask that I just stick to my skin and it smooths it over.” 

Loki has never seen anything like that before. “Alright, then why are there so many deep ones with such hacked edges? That’s not torture or surgery.” 

“Well I couldn’t just walk out of there.” Ashira walks closer to him as he stays against the tree. “Had to rid of stuff implanted in me since a few days after my birth. Right wrist tracker, left wrist biomonitor, and near my tailbone was what we called a carousel. Needed any medication? It was fed through there.” She steps closer yet again. Loki presses himself further against the tree to the point where he feels the bark pressing into his skin. “Left upper arm is where they put this disk thing that confined me to the facility I was being held at before I escaped and oh, my neck.” She forces him to stay against the tree, tilting her head to the left to exposing the jagged scar. “Here on my neck is the lovely place where I started my hack job. Whatever bar implant thing they put here was keeping me mostly subdued and basically enslaved.” 

“That does sound like a pain,” Loki replies. He’s grinning. 

Ashira doesn’t reply. She knows he is going to attempt to attack her, likely by her arms. So while he thinks she is still focused on the scars littering her body, she really is thinking of the best spots to hit him.

His right leg swings between her legs and hooks around her right knee. While he expects her to fall, she instead throws herself backwards into a handstand, Loki losing his balance as she does so. She stays upside down and turns herself to face him. 

He’s growling now, body bent over awkwardly from falling. Without a though he flings the dagger in his left hand directly towards her. 

It’s flying towards her right side so she lifts her right arm up and tilts her whole body to the right. Just as the dagger tip flies past her she reaches out and grabs the handle. 

Now upright, Loki is not any happier with her. 

He lunges towards her. She doges by twisting her upper body away. Her hand switches the grip of the dagger and moves it so that the blunt end lands between the tendons in his right wrist. 

He involuntarily releases the dagger and she grasps it in her left hand.

And as he pulls away she knees his stomach yet again. The prince falls back into the tree with each dagger crossed over his neck.

“I’m impressed.” He throws his arms up in defeat. 

Ashira smirks. She tosses the daggers to the side, standing and walking from Loki. As she walks away, Loki takes a moment to stand, honestly impressed with fighting style and technique. And he cannot help but watch her walk away. He catches sight of white along her spine and looks closer. A tattoo, it appears, of some form. A combination of swirling organic shapes and perfectly geometric cubes from what he can tell, even though he can only see half. 

“Wait, you have a tattoo?” 

Ashira looks back over her shoulder to him. “You never noticed?” 

“No…” Loki huffs. “No I haven’t.” 

“Besides when we go out I don’t try to cover… though I guess my hair does a pretty good job at that.” She glances down her spine where only the bottom half of it is visible. 

“So your tattoo, what does it symbolize?” 

“Well do they symbolize things back home on Asgard?” 

“Not typically. Decoration only sort of thing, though sometimes people will get family crests.” 

Ashira nods once before moving her hair from her neck. “Well the spinal tattoo is basically the history of a person on Ares. It begins on the neck with their birth rank which is why I have such a bizarre pattern near my hairline and then goes down from there: battles, kill count, awards, discoveries. Those weird swirls? Got those for making new technology.” 

“And all those tiny little dots?”

“Kill count.“

While he cannot count every single one (mostly due to the nature of her shirt) there are easily thousands of little white dots totaling somewhere near 6,000 that he can see, forget the ones he can’t.

Ashira chuckles at his slightly agape mouth. “Don’t tell me you’re frightened.” 

He looks back to her face. “Curious.” 

“Good.” Ashira turns back to face him. “Again?”

“I’ll beat you this time.”

“No you won’t.”

He summons the daggers into his hands again. 

They both go charging at each other, this time Ashira jumping over him and grabbing a branch easily. Loki spins to slash at her but she just lifts her legs up with the rest of her body as he goes charging back towards the tree. 

He spins around again. Before he can get far, however, Ashira drops her legs down, thighs wrapping tightly around his neck, ankles crossing. She releases the branch and throws her torso towards the ground. Her hands touch the grass just as Loki grips her calves with the knives tucked in his thumbs. His fingers press into the underside of her knees to attempt to force her legs to move, but she just yanks him forward as her hands finally touch the ground. 

Loki skids forward and catching himself right before he lands face first. He looks up to see Ashira coming down from a handstand perfectly. 

She grins at his nearly fallen form. 

Then he charges at her with his daggers ready. His right hand swings out to swipe at her but she simply ducks, grabbing his left arm and pinching between the tendons on his forearm and he involuntarily drops the dagger. 

Now they stand opposite to their previous stances, his left dagger now in Ashira’s left hand. 

“Ready?” Ashira teases. 

“For what?” 

No words are said as she charges at him. He ducks to avoid her and possibly catch her with his dagger only for her to jump up again suddenly. Before Loki even knows what’s happening the dagger lands in his shoulder and Ashira perfectly rolls upright. 

“Ah!” He screeches, hand flying to grab his left shoulder with his right hand.

“Sorry.” Ashira shrugs. “Not really though.” 

“By Valhalla and Hel you couldn’t just tap me instead?”

Ashira shakes her head as she attempts to hide her smile. “Nah. And I know you heal quick enough for it to not be a problem. I’ll grab something if you’d like to seal it entirely right now.” 

“That’d be lovely.” He grunts as he yanks the dagger out. 

She comes back a minute later with a tube no larger than her pinky finger in her hands. Loki has fallen back against the tree. His seidr isn’t working as well as he hopes it would for healing - in fact, it is doing absolutely nothing. 

“Here.” 

Loki grabs the bottle from her. While he fumbles with opening something so small, she leans against the tree as well, internally laughing at how ungraceful he is at the moment. 

The second the gel hits his skin he hisses. It stings; it stings worse than that time Thor thought it would be funny to pour wine mixed with salt in one of his worse cuts from a training incident gone wrong. But then it seals over like he was never cut in the first place. He watches as his skin and muscles and nerves stitch themselves back together, miniature tendrils attaching back to one another. 

“Huh.” Loki touches his skin gently. No pain, no blood. 

“Yeah, huh.” She pushes away from the tree and turns on her toes to face him. “Now, go ahead and use your magic. But try to keep up.”

She reaches her left hand out towards the ship. A pair of white batons goes flying through the between them, landing in each of her hands. 

Loki’s brows furrow. “You know magic?”

“It’s called science, like I said.” She twirls the batons around. “Let’s do some science versus magic fighting. Show you why the humans were wrong.” 

So he goes for his magic instantly. Any form of memory reading or even an attempt to usually puts people down for a moment or two.

He presses his palm to her forehead. 

Instead of memories, it’s blank, fuzziness. Static, just like before. No, not like before. Even worse. It’s pure blackness in her mind. 

Loki, the stubborn asshole he is, keeps trying to push into her mind.

While he is distracted trying to pick her mind, Ashira grabs his left hand and pins the wrists together. Loki pulls back at this. Ashira knees his stomach, pulling herself back to extend his arms behind him as he falls to his face. Her grip causes both of his arms to pull uncomfortably behind his back. Then she steps onto his back with her right foot, wedging it between the shoulders and pulls up.

Loki yelps at the twist in his upper back as she forces his muscles to separate in ways that are most definitely not natural.

“Science,” Ashira gloats, releasing his arms and stepping away from him. She calls her batons back to her hands. 

Loki stands slowly. “I’m impressed, I’ll admit. But how do I know you aren’t using magic as well?”

“Truce, for now, so I can show you.” Loki nods once. “Alright, here.” She switches both of her batons to her right hand and extends her left. “Feel.” 

Loki takes her hand tentatively. She could flip him over even if she is cupping her hand and she has no legitimate traction.

“Feel it. There’s a bit in there like a magnet.” 

His thumbs run over the crevices in her hand. He uses his magic to feel for different particles in her hands, finding an entire circuitry of electronics within her. There is a device in the center of her left palm, little tendrils of metal reaching up her wrist, deeply embedded in her arm’s nerves, extending as far as her brain stem. 

“My right hand only has the magnet. I’m left handed so this was installed to go through my left arm to align with any of my weaponry.”

“So you can call anything to you?” 

“Not anything, but things aligned with it. Batons, my sword, most of guns and grenades... Important things.” 

Loki drops her hand. “What if you need to improvise?” 

“You did just see me beat your ass like a bunch of times, right? And stab you?” Loki rolls his eyes. “Plus near anything makes a weapon.”

“Suppose you aren’t wrong about that. I must say, I’m impressed.” 

“That’s why I am weary of magic. If it can be done through mystical means, it can be done with science.” She rests her hands on her left hip again. “Science is proven, nearly infallible once everything is factored in. Magic is messy.” 

Loki cocks an eyebrow. “Science is still messy.”

“Yes but it makes sense.” She motions with her batons still pressed against her hip. “Magic doesn’t.” She points at him with the baton in her left hand

“Alright, another question. Why is all your stuff white? Why white?”

“Every planet has its colors, right?”

“Right.”

“Well Ares’ colors are that blue color and silver and white,” she taps the left toe of her shoe on the grass and leaves it there, weight moving almost entirely to her right leg. “As you get higher in rank, people can change their weaponry from the blue and silver to another color or a custom pattern. Most people go to all blue or all silver or something simple like that, but I wanted something different. So all of it is a pure white.”

“Interesting. But doesn’t white get dirty easily?”

A very terrifying grin pulls at her lips. “The blood falls right off.”

Loki opens his mouth to ask how that is possible, but closes it. He doesn’t want to know. Sort of scared to ask in the event she just tries to swipe at him to show him. 

“Now come on, we should move soon. This planet actually has a Kree and Aresian outpost on it and capture or death is not in my plan for today.” 

He gapes at that. 

“How stupid can you get?” 

“Oh, it can get a lot worse.” Ashira tosses both batons to flip them around. “For real, we need to leave. The radars degrade the cloaking over time and there is approximately two hours before it will be entirely uncloaked.” 

“It’s like you want to be captured.”

The ex-princess simply shrugs and sighs. “I know the limits of the technology because I either built it myself or with Er -” She stops herself suddenly. 

No, she reminds herself, don’t bring it up. 

“Some others.” 

The prince knows she cut herself off to avoid telling him something. A name, most likely. 

Something too personal to her. Something she won’t share. 

Or maybe something she can’t.
