Jet also described Beverly Johnson as a "supermodel" in the 22 December 1977 edition. Hemingway was again described as a "supermodel" in the 25 July 1977 edition of Time. American Vogue used the term "super-model" to describe Jean Shrimpton in the 15 October 1965 edition, and "supermodel" on the cover page to describe Margaux Hemingway in the 1 September 1975 edition. On 21 March 1967, The New York Times referred to Twiggy as a supermodel the February 1968 article of Glamour listed all 19 "supermodels" The Chicago Daily Defender wrote "New York Designer Turns Super Model" in January 1970 The Washington Post and the Mansfield News Journal used the term in 1971 and in 1974, both the Chicago Tribune and The Advocate used the term "supermodel" in their articles. In 1965, the encyclopedic guide American Jurisprudence Trials used the term "super model" (".at issue was patient's belief that her husband was having an affair with a super model"). The term supermodel had also been used several times in the media in the 1960s and 1970s. Lisa Fonssagrives at London Paddington station, 1951

In 1949, Cosmopolitan magazine referred to Anita Colby, the highest paid model at the time, as a "super model": "She's been super model, super movie saleswoman, and top brass at Selznick and Paramount." On 18 October 1959, Vancouver's Chinatown News described Susan Chew as a "super model". In 1947, anthropologist Harold Sterling Gladwin wrote "supermodel" in his book Men Out of Asia. Later in 1943, an agent named Clyde Matthew Dessner used the term in a "how-to" book about modeling, entitled So You Want to Be a Model!, in which Dessner wrote, "She will be a super-model, but the girl in her will be like the girl in you-quite ordinary, but ambitious and eager for personal development." According to Model: The Ugly Business of Beautiful Women by Michael Gross, the term supermodel was first used by Dessner in the 1940s. You know the sort of man he goes in for theatrical effect ." On 6 October 1942, a writer named Judith Cass had used the term super model for her article in the Chicago Tribune, which headlined "Super Models Are Signed for Fashion Show". Then I have had what I call the 'super' model. He made a split EP called Sick Dimension with Demzwon. An early use of the term supermodel appeared in 1891, in an interview with artist Henry Stacy Marks for The Strand Magazine, in which Marks told journalist Harry How, "A good many models are addicted to drink, and, after sitting a while, will suddenly go to sleep. If two unmarried celebrities are seen in public together, they are often described as “dating” which means they were seen in public together, and it is not clear whether they are merely friends, exploring a more intimate relationship, or are romantically involved. The cultural magazine Amauta was founded and directed by Peruvian writer, journalist and politician José Carlos Mariátegui. The magazine collected contributions from intellectuals of the Peruvian avant-garde of the time and was responsible for disseminating the indigenist movement. It also introduced in Peru the Latin American avant-garde, as well as different European currents of thought and artistic movements of the time (psychoanalysis, surrealism, cubism, futurism or the new Russian narrative). 32 issues were published in its four years of existence (1926-1930) and it was distributed both nationally and internationally.
Among its local collaborators were Peruvian intellectuals and artists from different regions of the country, such as the indigenists: the artist José Sabogal and Julia Condesido (Lima), the historian and anthropologist Luis Eduardo Valcárcel (Cusco), the poets Alejandro Peralta (Puno) and César Atahualpa Rodríguez (Arequipa), and the writer and poet Enrique López Albújar (Piura). In addition, the politician Víctor Raúl Haya de la Torre (La Libertad), founder of the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA), collaborated from exile. Among his international contributors were Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, Jorge Luis Borges, Miguel de Unamuno, André Breton and Diego Rivera.
Peruvian art historian Natalia Majluf co-curated with Beverly Adams (Blanton Museum of Art) the exhibition The Avant-garde Networks of Amauta: Argentina, Mexico, and Peru in the 1920s, which was presented at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS) (February 27-May 27, 2019) in Madrid, with stations at the Museo de Arte de Lima (MALI) (June 21-September 22, 2019) and the Blanton Museum of Art at the University of Texas at Austin (February 16-August 30, 2020). The press release of MNCARS highlights the following:
“The project questions the binary oppositions between nationalism and internationalism, localism and cosmopolitanism, criollismo and indigenismo, or tradition and modernity that have so far organised the discussion on this period. The magazine reflects a less dogmatic and polarized reality. (…)
In the same way, even today the group of indigenist painters led by José Sabogal is seen from the perspective imposed by the modernists of the 1930s and 1940s, who labeled these artists as traditionalists, excluding them from their particular historical narrative of modernity. The exhibition not only recovers indigenism to the field of the avant-garde, but – more broadly – it applies Amauta’s pluralistic gaze to rethink Latin American art of this period.”

FOMA 33: The Indoor University; Canadian Welfare And Modern Architecture (Part 1)
Starting from the ‘60s, Canada embarked in a massive policy of creation of institutions for higher education as part of a concerted effort of modernization of the country, which, after the end of World War II was increasing its autonomy from the British Empire.
Tumblr media
Bata Library, Trent University, Peterborough (1967-1969) by Ronald Thom. | Photo via FIG projects
A survey of the 1965-66 academic year published in October 1966, by the specialized magazine University Affairs listed 22 institutions that were either new (Simon Fraser University, University of Calgary, York University) or had their status modified (Mount Saint Vincent College, for example, became Mount Saint Vincent University and Lakehead College of Arts, Science and Technology became Lakehead University).
Besides providing spaces and services for its citizens, these efforts were also instrumental to reinforce the concept of a country based on two cultures, the anglophone and the francophone, not just present in Quebec, but also to be found across all the country. Moreover, issues of decentralization, in order to bring higher education to all the provinces, were crucial. This massive investment from the federal state and the local administrations meant that universities were (and still are) public entities, a quite different condition if compared to the neighbor at the South of the border.

Bata Library, Trent University, Peterborough (1967-1969) by Ronald Thom. | Photo via FIG projects
Ronald Thom designed the masterplan of the Trent University campus in Peterborough and a series of buildings scattered on the premises. The Bata Library was located at the core of the campus, with the intention to become its focal point, dramatically overseeing the Otonabee river. The whole building is organized around a vast lobby that distributes natural light to the surrounding study areas. The walls of Bata are exposed-aggregate rubble and concrete, which Thom saw as matching closely the stone outcroppings of the area.

The stacked volumes of the studios and class-rooms are organized around the internal circulation, composed by a vast atrium that crosses the entire building, used as space for exhibition, lectures and students’ presentations. The whole language of the building is almost spartan with concrete and bricks left exposed as in an industrial building, hence underlying the productive nature of architectural studies.

MacEwan Hall, University of Calgary (1967) by Stevenson Raines Barrett. | Photo via FIG projects
The seat of the students union of the new university, which in 1966 became autonomous from the University of Alberta. “In the early 1970s, MacEvan Hall included a food services area that seated 500, pool and ping-pong tables, a bowling alley, a 1,000 person dining room and ballroom, a fire pit lounge, a music lounge, a library, offices and meeting rooms, a bank, a barber, and a bookstore.”
“In the public domain the most important change distinguishing the new universities from the old is that the new universities are in the public domain in a manner, and to a degree, uncommon to the old. It is not simply that they are public institutions initiated and sustained by government grants. This was the case for many universities in the past. But most of the universities begun in the last decade … have stirred a wide interest and a sense of proprietorship in the communities in which they were established. The result is that these universities are in the public domain; not simply as public institutions, but as community projects.
Part of the mystique of the university has been torn away. The old university with its absent-minded professors and its ivy-covered walls is a romantic picture that stirs pleasant memories, but little enthusiasm as a model for today’s development. The new universities are “public property” in a sense that was not true of universities in the past. As a consequence, all aspects of the university’s life and work are being regarded afresh by many people unfamiliar with university traditions. And while these people are not unsympathetic with what they see, they do not hesitate to criticize sharply when they see fit. The university no longer enjoys an isolated and protected position in the community.”
– Murray G. Ross, president, York University, in University Affairs, April 1965.

Housing Union Building (HUB), University of Alberta (1969-1971) by Diamond and Myers Architects with R.L. Wilkin. | Photo via Capital Modern
Designed by former Louis Kahn students, The Housing Union Building (HUB) was an innovative experiment in student housing, combining function and circulation in a new way. The elongated building was designed as a weather-enclosed concourse linking to other campus buildings, and as the acronym suggests, was intended to be a central focus on campus for students, staff and the general public.

Lethbridge University Hall (1968-1969) by Arthur Erickson. | Photo via University of Lethbridge
Arthur Erickson, perhaps the early prototype of the starchitect, a globe-trotting cosmopolitan designer, created the main hall for the University of Lethbridge, founded in 1967. The elongated building, a land-art megastructure over a ravine, juxtaposed to the horizontal landscape of the prairies was organized along an extended walkway, a six storey concourse with a complex section, conceived as the central element of social gathering, especially during winter.

University Center, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg (1966-1969) by Number Ten Architectural Group. | Photo via Bohemian Blog
University Centre is a five-storey poured and pre-cast concrete structure constructed as part of a campus planning strategy that aimed to develop the campus as an urban centre. Overground facilities include dining space, offices and conference rooms, while the lounges, cafeteria, bookstore and open spaces for gathering were located below grade. University Centre serves as the central meeting point for all of the campus tunnels, culminating in a two-storey multifunctional space referred to as a “campo”.
Tumblr media
Located in a quite dense area of downtown Montréal, the two pavilions of the recently established Université du Quebéc à Montréal sit over metro lines, to which they are directly connected. A semi-underground concourse connects different educational facilities, such as cafeterias, auditoriums and class-rooms, creating dramatic spaces in correspondence of pre-existing heritage religious buildings, whose facades were incorporated in the general design.

As a consequence of this ideological positioning, but also, of the peculiar climatic and geographical conditions of Canada, a few salient features can be read in the architecture and layout of many of the new facilities that sprouted in a very condensed period.
In particular, many projects shared the objective to interiorize within the envelope of the buildings, vast spaces for collective socialization, between students, faculty and staff. If the pastoral campus, inspired by Oxford or Cambridge was the model of the research university in the USA and of Canadian institutions between the XIX and XX centuries, one can identify in the new universities and in the additions and expansion of the existing ones of the ‘60s and ‘70s in Canada, the “galleria” as the dominant feature: a vast and climatically controlled environment for public life within an academic setting.
A very simplistic reading of such recurrent trope can just assume that as the majority of courses take place between September and May, when winter is the hardest, it is logical that indoor spaces are more important and more frequented than the lawns, courtyards, quadrants and gardens of universities in milder climates. Covered plazas, multi-storeys lobbies, expanded circulations, sky-lit concourses and indoor streets were part of an arsenal of architectural and typological tools mobilized by designers so as to accompany the surge of a new middle class of educated professionals, and to interiorize a strong idea of the “urban” inside the life of students. Such generosity was especially striking if compared to the tiny and cramped spaces of classrooms, laboratories, libraries and administrative offices of the university buildings from the first half of the XX century, often devoid of any places for informal exchange.
Still now, these vast indoor fragments of city life are extremely popular an used.

Updated July 30, 2020| For Cat People Contributed by Lisa Stardust August is a crucial month, my furry good friends. While cats(in their unlimited wisdom)currently know that International Cat Day is on August 8th, it’s worth advising the doggos that National Dog Day takes place on August 26th. These are essential days for both species, in which pet dog parents throughout the nation (and also past) have the possibility to reflect on simply just how much their pet dogs suggest to them.
These days, it’s a bond that’s more vital than ever. You extremely well might be the brightest spot in your mother or father’s day during this time. Broad strokes, below are the major highlights for the cats and puppers this month:
The Aquarius full moon on August 3rd is a time of reflection, where you can analyze your goals for the last complete month of summer.
You’ll determine to welcome your internal diva and also live big on August 4th, when Mercury enters Leo. You function hard, so you must entirely play hard.
Venus, planet of love and also elegance, goes into tender Cancer on August 7th. If you’re being educated or finding out some new tricks, you may really feel a little bit extra delicate, however attempt not to take any adverse feedback you receive too seriously throughout this time around.
Rebellious earth Uranus begins its backward trip on August 15th in Taurus. This is a great time to stroll on the wild side as well as display your individuality– people (and also other family pets) will certainly take notice.
The Leo new moon on August 18th is a suitable time to bring your desires to reality. Meow it out and bark it up– when it involves your goals, there’s a lot of possibility for you throughout this moment.
The Sun goes into Virgo on August 22nd, enabling your analytical mind to make needed as well as vital choices about mundane day-to-day life (feeding, snoozing, playing, walking, etc).
Read on for your individual indicator, and also click here for my 2020 pet astrological forecast. Feline and also Dog Horoscopes for August
Aries (March 21-April 19 )It’s vital to mark your lawn at home as well as to develop an area that belongs exclusively to you. Press all of your playthings to the edge of the room you desire to declare as your own on August 7th. At first, your parents will be a little overwhelmed regarding why you require your very own personal location– nevertheless, you
‘re part of one large, satisfied household, right? Even
individuals in the closest of families need require time. They’ll eventually get the tip and leave you to take a break and kick back by yourself. Taurus( April 20-May 20)Quarantining for the previous few months has actually been challenging for you, considering that you love being outdoors in nature. Being caged within is starting to worry you out, as you long to be outdoors– especially now. See to it your pet moms and dad offers you that area to wander, whether it’s on multiple walks a day, or simply being there to unlock and allow you outside. This is specifically crucial on August 15th, when it’s a good idea to be as forthcoming as well as direct as feasible about your demands.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Your normally positive self has been really feeling a little cynical lately. Could your current ‘tude be an extreme estimate of your inner sensations? You may consider transforming your overview and starting to search the bright side. It’s crucial to continue to seek pleasure in the simple things, whether it’s your daily walk or a romp at the canine park. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Paris beckoned African-American intellectuals hoping to escape the racism and conformity of American life. Chief among them: Richard Wright, the acclaimed author of Native Son and Black Boy, who arrived in 1947. He was soon joined by Chester Himes, an ex-convict who mastered hard-boiled detective fiction; James Baldwin, the precocious essayist; and Richard Gibson, an editor at the Agence France-Presse. These men became friends, colleagues and, soon, bitter rivals. Their relationship appeared to unravel over France's war to keep its colony in Algeria. Gibson pressured Wright to publicly criticize the French government, angering the acclaimed author. Wright dramatized their falling-out in a roman à clef he called Island of Hallucination, which was never published, even after his death in 1960. In 2005, Gibson published a memoir in a scholarly journal recounting the political machinations his former friend had dramatized, telling The Guardian he had obtained a copy of the manuscript and had no objections to its publication. "I turn up as Bill Hart, the 'superspy,'" Gibson said of the story. Wright's book now seems prescient. In a strange twist, on April 26, when the National Archives released thousands of documents pertaining to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, they included three fat CIA files on Gibson. According to these documents, he had served U.S. intelligence from 1965 until at least 1977. This was well after Wright wrote his book, and it's not clear if Gibson had engaged in espionage before that period. But his files revealed his CIA code name, QRPHONE-1; his salary (as much as $900 a month); and his various missions, as well as his attitude ("energetic") and performance ("a self-starter"). The most curious part of the story: Gibson is still alive. He's 87 and living abroad. (Gibson "will not be able to your questions," said a family friend who answered the phone at his residence.) The CIA is usually vigilant about defending the confidentiality of its sources and methods. In announcing the release of the JFK files last year, President Donald Trump declared the records would be opened in their entirety, "except for the names and addresses of living persons." Save for Gibson's, apparently. (The CIA declined to comment for this story.) SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER SIGN UP Update your preferences » Born in 1931, Gibson grew up in Philadelphia and attended Kenyon College in Ohio. A stint in the Army gave him a taste for European life, and he moved to Rome and then to Paris. He wrote a novel, a detective story called A Mirror for Magistrates, and fell in and out with Wright and other expatriate intellectuals. In 1957, Gibson left Paris and went to work for CBS Radio News, according to his newspaper reports. With a colleague, he covered the Cuban revolution that brought Fidel Castro to power. In 1960, Gibson, who then sympathized with leftist movements, co-founded the Fair Play for Cuba Committee (FPCC), which defended Castro's government from negative coverage in the North American press. When he left CBS, Gibson took over running the FPCC, and it grew rapidly on college campuses. He resisted subpoenas from Senate investigators seeking to discredit the group and urged civil rights leaders to support the Cuban cause. Yet in July 1962, Gibson quit the FPCC and wrote an anonymous letter on the group's stationery to the CIA. If the agency would arrange a secure meeting spot, he wrote, he could be of assistance. The CIA figured out who wrote the letter and made contact with the young intellectual. He had moved on to Switzerland to become the English-language editor of a new magazine called La Révolution Africaine. In a January 1963 memo, CIA Deputy Director Richard Helms informed the FBI that Gibson had told an agency source about the ideological direction of the magazine—further left—and how it planned to relocate 15 staff members from Paris to Algiers. RELATED STORIES New Study Debunks JFK Conspiracy Theory Trump's Twitter Fingers on the Grassy Knoll The CIA's Secrets About JFK, Che, and Castro Revealed When Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, the CIA asked Gibson about accused assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, who had corresponded with the FPCC. Gibson told them what little he knew and indicated he wanted to "maintain contact" with the U.S. government. In the summer of 1964, Gibson had another falling-out, this time with the publisher of La Révolution Africaine, who accused him of being an agent of the FBI and CIA. Whenever the charge was repeated years later, Gibson shrugged it off. "If I'm CIA, where's my pension?" he told The Guardian in 2006. By then, Gibson was no longer working for the agency. But his file shows that a Langley officer contacted him in January 1965 and arranged for a debriefing and "test assignment" that summer: "After recruitment and agreement to...[polygraph] examination, [s]ubject was introduced to his…case officer." He soon began working for the intelligence service as a spy. Four years later, according to his file, the agency increased Gibson's tax-free salary of $600 a month to $900 a month (the equivalent of more than $6,000 in 2018 dollars). His mission: to report on "his extensive contacts among leftist, radical, and communist movements in Europe and Africa." Gibson, his wife and their two kids settled in Belgium, where he lived the life of a cosmopolitan intellectual. He traveled widely and wrote a book about African liberation movements fighting white-minority rule. He also monitored the revolutionary poet and playwright Amiri Baraka, who trusted him as an ideological comrade. In his letters to the CIA's spy, Baraka signed off with the valediction "In struggle." (Baraka's son, Ras, is the mayor of Newark, New Jersey.) While the newly released CIA files don't include operational details, Gibson seems to have been a prolific spy. One CIA memo asserts that in 1977 his file contained more than 400 documents. His quip to The Guardian notwithstanding, Gibson even had a CIA pension of sorts. In September 1969, his case officer noted that "QRPHONE/1 has begun to invest a portion of his monthly salary in a reputable mutual fund of his choice. This modest investment program will enhance financial security in the event of termination and/or a rainy day." Gibson was still an "active agent" in 1977 when Congress reopened the JFK investigation and started asking questions about the agency's penetration of the FPCC in 1963. The House Select Committee on Assassinations asked to see Gibson's CIA file. The agency showed investigators only a small portion of it, but the entirety of the still-classified material became part of the CIA's archive of JFK records. That designation would eventually change. In October 1992, Congress passed a law mandating the release of all JFK files within 25 years. Gibson's secret was safe for the time being. In 1985, he successfully sued a South African author who asserted he was a CIA agent. The book was withdrawn, and the publisher issued a statement declaring that "Mr. Gibson has never worked for the United States Central Intelligence Agency," a claim that no longer seems tenable. In 2013, Gibson sold his collected papers to George Washington University in Washington, D.C. To celebrate the acquisition, the university held a daylong symposium, "Richard Gibson: Literary Contrarian & Cold Warrior," dedicated to "furthering our understanding of the intellectual and literary history of the Cold War." With the release of Gibson's CIA files, scholars can now discern the hidden hand of the American clandestine service in writing that history. When it came to the character who inspired Bill Hart, "the superspy," Richard Wright's fiction was perhaps ahead of its time. This story has been updated with additional context to reflect the version that appears in the June 1 print edition of Newsweek.
