I’d be interested in hearing abt bass boosting!
Y'all gotta stop enabling me 'cause I'll never turn down an opportunity to exposit. So, this is in reference to the recent Monty Hall poll post, and my assertion that "my favorite explanation comes from just bass boosting the numbers involved". To bring us all onto the same page, let's first talk about the Monty Hall problem.
(Also, I tried a cute thing with coloring the words to make the argument easier to follow. I apologize if it's hard to read; you can copy-paste the text somewhere else and read it there if you mind.)
So the setup is, we start with a game. The game is usually ostensibly a part of the show Let's Make a Deal, hosted by Monty Hall, but this particular game never actually appeared on that show. I'll instead host it in a certain infinite casino (The Casgeno) which I often use for probability puzzles like this. Here's the Monty Hall game: You're given three sealed boxes. Two of them are empty, and one has some big desirable prize, like a couple thousand dollars or the keys to a new car or what have you. You are to guess which one of the boxes has the prize, and if you're right, you get to keep the prize.
Okay so there's pretty straightforwardly no strategy to this; you've got a one in three chance of victory. But here's the thing: After you make your guess, the host of the game (let's say his name is still Monty) opens one of the empty boxes and shows you there's nothing inside. Now there's two closed boxes in front of you, and you're offered one more choice: Do you stick with your previous guess, or do you switch to the other closed box?
So that's the usual setup. (Okay the usual one involves doors and goats, but the actual important bits are clearly the same.) Let's ignore this question for now and look at a different one, in which we bass boost the numbers:
This is a game we'll call the Monty World game. Instead of three boxes, Monty tells you that he's selected a person from your homeworld (the Casgeno overlaps infinitely many realities; don't worry about it) completely at random. Eight billion people, all equally likely to be selected. He tasks you with guessing the selected person; if you're correct then you get the big prize.
Again there is no strategy here. Let's say that you guess he randomly selected your skateboarding cousin Throckmorton as the person. But then, after you make this guess, Monty reveals more information. He tells you that the randomly-selected person is either your skateboarding cousin Throckmorton or Mohamed Badawy, a 24 year old retail worker from the Bûlâq al-Dakrûr district of Giza, Egypt. Again you're offered a choice: Do you stick to your cousin Throckmorton, or do you switch to Mohamed?
Unlike in the Monty Hall game, for the Monty World game the choice seems obvious. With eight billion people on the planet, it's vanishingly unlikely that the selected person was anyone you knew, much less your cousin Throckmorton specifically. Like, would Mohamed Badawy's name even come up if he wasn't the selected person? Switching to Mohamed Badawy, 24 year old retail worker from the Bûlâq al-Dakrûr district of Giza, takes your odds of winning from a statistical impossibility to a statistical guarantee:
The only way you lose by switching is if your cousin Throckmorton was, due to staggeringly miraculous bad luck, the actual selected person all along.
I like this modification because it is incredibly effective at pushing back against the "but there are only two options so it should be fifty-fifty" reflex. Yes, there are only two options, but they come from very different places: one of them was proposed by someone who knows nothing about the situation (you) and one of them was proposed by someone who knows everything about the situation (Monty).
Now let's get back to the boxes. If you think about it, the setup is basically the same, except for the scale of the numbers involved. If there were three people in the world instead of eight billion, then the new game and the old game would work exactly the same, beat for beat. The weirdness in the old game is specifically because there are exactly three options, the smallest possible number for which the game can work. When Monty opens the empty box, it just feels like he's revealing an empty box—that's where his hands are, after all—but what he's really doing is informing you that the prize is either in the box you guessed or in the remaining unopened box. (Notice that the revealed box itself is so unimportant that I haven't even given it a color.) The conclusion, then, is the same as before:
The only way you lose by switching is if your initial guess was, due to a quite reasonable one-in-three shot of bad luck, the actual nonempty box all along.
And, yeah, that's what managed to take the problem from "unintuitive but true" to "intuitive" to me. You can either stick with the option you proposed at random or switch to the option proposed by The Guy Who Knows How To Win. Obviously the second one is better, so switching improves your odds.

for those that say "oh descole fell like 100 feet from the detragiganto" you might've surprisingly underestimated it ...
Tumblr media
... because he actually fell at around 345 feet / 105 meters . and survived! i guess this man doesn't know what fall damage is considering his previously established jump height

DANG. Absolutely cold-blooded.
#I’d expect a zinger like that outta reggie any day but dilton?#did not see that coming in a million years#he’s choosing an insult OVER answering a question in class correctly?#what did archie DO to motivate this??#archie comics#dilton doiley#archie andrews#mr. flutesnoot#really though you can’t answer the original question without knowing exactly how many gallons archie’s horrible car can hold#my real question is where dilton got 8.342 from#I was expecting it to equal some natural number like 1 or 2 but when I did the calculations it equaled 2.2072932 gallons#I double checked my work with the internet and recieved 2.2037233 gallons instead#I’m almost certain this is a result of mr. flutesnoot rounding his provided number of gallons by several decimal places#so that I calculated the conversion with one liter equaling 0.264 gallons rather than 0.264172 gallons#of course when I checked it again with my own calculator I got 2.203722824 which is closer to but not quite 2.2037233#because even if you rounded it so that a three would follow the two you’re still left with ‘230’ rather than ‘233’ at that one part#so the more accurate values I found must still be rounded by some amount to cause the discrepancy#at ANY rate: unless I have missed something in my calulations the number 8.342 has no particular significance#this isn’t lightning-fast mental math. dilton just made that number up on the spot#and the specificity only exists to make him sound smarter#(and it kinda worked because I did initially assume there was some meaning behind the number)#the joke might have landed better if he’d have said ‘3.785 liters’ (exactly 1 gallon)#UNLESS the gas prices at the time happened to work out so that 2.2037233 gallons equaled exactly one dollar or someth—

love when this is referred to as the gifted kid website. shockingly my mental disorders made me mentally disordered and school never really vibed with that so. couldn’t be me
#ppl always talking about their whatever grade reading level and how many books they’d read as kids and im just over here like🧍🏽#I’ve never been actually bad at english or reading but I couldn’t focus on reading books to save my fucking life#I hated those sheets where you had to read like a certain number of books or whatever over the course of a semester or the year or whatever#my GATE test scores for english were super high but my math was bad enough that I never qualified#and adhd made me not even perform well in English half the time because I couldn’t pay attention I couldn’t read long books I couldn’t turn#in my assignments or if I did they were late and etc etc etc#don’t get me started with math#I was the worst in my class in third grade at minute math and never made it to the levels of minute math my classmates did#(they posted results on the wall for everyone to see)#and in 6th grade I was put into an additional remedial math class#throughout middle-high school I was at the level of most classmates in terms of the classes I took but that’s only because I was not allowe#to fail and was put through absolute fucking hell with a billion tutors and grueling hours of extra work from them and blah blah blah#like I remember how I felt in those tutoring sessions and half the time I actually wanted to cry.#I didn’t start doing solidly genuinely Good in school until senior year of high school.#not coincidentally around the same time I started taking adderall I think#I had accommodations by 9th grade but they didn’t do that much except for the function that let me turn in assignments up to 2 days late#without penalty. which i had teachers question sometimes and i had to pull the Yeah it’s Literally Against The Law to not allow me this car#anyway. point is. i was never in the gate program and most of my friends were and it was mostly adhd related#adhd is considered such a quirky nothing disorder nowadays that I don’t even like mentioning I have it really. because what people think of#when I say the term is Not what i actually dealt with and made school torturous and made my parents lash out at me for things and etc etc#depression and dysphoria did not help either. but I digress#I’m not sure why im making this post#kibumblabs

Date idea: I show you the 2009 remaster v the original mono vs the 2023 mix of songs from The Beatles Red and Blue albums, then I info dump about why they each sound different in terms of sound mixing, and why the mono and 2023 remasters sound better than the 2009 remasters. We only get to make out if we make it all the way to “I Me Mine” on the blue album.

our accounting instructor is wonderful. we bombed both of our tests this week because of our dyscalculia (5.56/10 and 3.33/10), and she could tell we were upset after the test today. she came over to us, and when I explained that I'd done really badly and was frustrated because I know what I'm doing. I understand the material and the practical application perfectly, but the act of punching numbers into the calculator and transcribing on paper or electronically is incredibly difficult and 80% of the time, I have to run the calculations 3+ times to be sure the answer is correct.
my instructor told me that it's clear from my assignments and previous tests that I understood my stuff, and sat down with me with both tests. I still had my scrap paper from both, so I showed her and we compared my answers to the answer key, and long story short? she changed my marks on both tests to 100%! apparently what matters to her is that I understand it, she also has a hell of a time with numbers and gets it. we're going to sit down with my midterm exam and the rest of my tests, once they're written! I almost started crying out of relief. she's an incredible instructor, I really love her. I hope I have her for accounting software in the fall.

This week are the final exams at Austrian high schools and even though it's already been a couple years since I've been through that myself, I still follow this one meme page on Instagram where the students always send in memes afterwards relating to the exams, like where they make fun of weird exam questions or let out their frustrations about bad task descriptions and such. I don't know, it's somehow kind of entertaining to try figure out what the given topics were only based on the memes😂
#sometimes I look up the actual task description afterwards if I'm curious enough#(they're always uploaded on an official website in the afternoon after that specific exam along with the solutions#so the students can look through them and in case they still remember what they've written in the exam they can compare#and try to figure out what grade they might get)#but they're also accessible to everyone and it's also extremely common that teachers will use past years' exams for homework or tests#1 or 2 years ago I actually tried the math exam bc I was bored and just wanted to see if I'd pass theoretically without any studying#I only ended up doing the first part (the exam has 2) bc I lost motivation but I think at least in that one part I'd have passed#really showed me once again that my math teacher just made things unreasonably hard (she could NOT explain things)#and her exams were always much more difficult I was always anxious about if I'd get a decent grade (tbf I held myself to high standards)#so when I had my final exam I was still nervous of course bc big exam and all but as I went through the tasks I was more and more like#'huh this seems actually decently easy for a final exam lol'#but ngl exams are more fun to do if you aren't forced to do them and they won't have any consequences anymore#but I hope all students this year are getting through it well#yesterday was latin and ancient greek (which aren't mandatory as they're not part of all school types so there's fewer people taking them)#today was german tomorrow mathematics and the day after it's english#I think next week there are the remaining language exams like french spanish croatian hungarian and slovenian#but again for these it depends a lot on school type/which language focus you chose#+ I think some vocational schools have non-standardised exams for specific subjects but I didn't attend one of those so idk#and oral exams will be about a month later in June these now were just written ones#not gonna lie I'm really happy that I've been out of school for a few years now and completed all that#but I do have a bit of nostalgia for it/the idea of it sometimes#austrian things#selnia talks

me when im obsessed with dead singers from 50 (well... mostly 70-120) years ago and im heartbroken to know i'll never see them on stage... never hear them breathe, never see them sweat, never even touch the hem of their garment...

it really is enough to drive a person mad...
#this is so funny because this is the one vaguepost that i wholeheartedly 100% agree with skdhsjshsjdhsn#like yeah!! it does indeed pain me that the level of operatic singing has so drastically decreased over the last 50 years!#that top operatic stars of today are all either nasal or wobbly or knödely or completely inaudible without microphones#but some of yall are just not ready for this conversation. example a#anyway. as many have said before. its kinda easier to understand how some people cant appreciate certain operas#if they never heard them sung well lol#sorry im out of blood today. i know this is a very uncomfortable subject for many but.#you can actually judge someone's singing in a pretty objective way. there are nuances of course. but from a technical point of view#it really is pretty simple#(also its not like i dont enjoy *some* modern singers lol have you SEEN my kwiecień posting???? lmao#hell. there are even some modern singers i have a soft spot who i KNOW sing... Not Very Well. but i enjoy them lol#not many ofc but. yknow)#also 50 years ago would be the 1970s if im doing my maths correctly and. that is really the point in opera history#when it all started going downhill (sadly partly because of one of my all time favourite singers' influence... but thats a different story)#anyway. remember when luis tetrazzini said that the future generations of singers will be The Best singers in history#because they'll have access to all those recordings of The Greats Of The Past that they'll be able to listen to and learn from?#lmao queen you were right about so many things but that was tragically not one of them </3#opera tag#yes im stirring the pot of boiling liquid shit and putting this post gently into the main tag#*luisA tetrazzini ofc#lol and lmao im out FOR blood* shdgsjsghs

Anyway saying this but i dont use chat gpt cuz i dont really trust it would help and if im gonna fail anyway might as well fail on my own merits <3

hiii! 'tis me.
#i have returned from death (school). limbo‚ even.#i shall not describe it as hell thanks to my lovely Friend (trademark) whom lights up the entire room for me#despite probably darkening it for everyone else due to her apathetic and uncaring nature. oh she's perfect#ahem. not the point. and also very boring to the rest of you who do not know nor care about her#well! the day went fairly great. she (the Friend) seemed to really enjoy my gift and got embarrassed by it‚ which was my intention#she read through the notebook i prepared for her over the summer as a sort of diary directed at her and she really laughed at some parts#she seemed to like the keychain‚ i hope to see her use it#she also really liked the matching-with-mine astronaut that is both an eraser and a pencil sharpener and is already using it#and she ate the two chocolate bars (her favorites) i added into the box as extras.#she was also pretty impressed when i pointed out design choices i made for the inside of the box#so all in all. great day‚ amazing day‚ nearly perfect dare i say. god why does it rhyme. i hate it here#ahem anyway!#we also have new teachers that took the place of the old ones. of course many remain unchanged‚ but it didn't go without any new faces#notably‚ we have a new qur'an teacher‚ a new math teacher and a new literature teacher.#some other teachers were also changed but i have not met them yet so i do not know which#i am especially conflicted with the new literature teacher -#on one hand‚ he's great! very funny‚ very considerate‚ and quite a good teacher from what i've seen.#on the other hand i will also quite miss the old literature teacher.#she was nice! i hope i get to see her around the school#anywwy‚ i will also be missing the old qur'an teacher a lot. she was my favorite‚ and she is very kind-hearted#im fine with the math teacher i suppose. i liked the old one‚ and the new one seems a bit... extra? but i don't feel too strongly on it.#i heard the english teacher we had was replaced and the one we had left the school‚ so that's sad. i really liked her.#🌙rambling

#@straightlightyagami#THIS!#EXACTLY!#just the other day i tried my ass off to shove that into ppl's minds#if you wish to study mathematics i suppose u see the universe behind the field's name & i imply there's a strong inner longing that makes u#this definitely is what makes me do so.. & i dont think it's very abstract saying quite all of us do it for the same reason#the beauty the calmness the peace the understanding & having found a language that makes expressing what's inside the head so much easier.#not necessarily in correlation with others but just infront of myself. mathematics puts me back up when anxiety kicks me down#yup despite the shitloads of expierence with humans i honestly tried to calmly explain the abyss that seperates math & finance#without even dropping a gaussian neither enrolling statistics i know that'd bore the shit out of everyone#but just for the character for what's inside a person & what drives them & how tremendously that differs.#mathematician = seeing a beautiful world that makes sense & me somewhat naively still 3yrs old wanting everyone else to see that too#& they'd go “whoa” & get themselves 1 or 2 handful of that sense 2 bring home i mean it's right there look u just need to grab it it's free#but unfortunately that's not how that works. as usual it depends on the scale & i guess i quite missed theirs.#but hey it's fine shall they think their darkest arithmetigreedy thoughts. lesson refreshed😅 i'll just shut the fuck up 4 the next ~3yrs.#and - oh my god - of course use my calculator for the stuff the world seemingly thinks mathematics is. amen.
