I’d be interested in hearing abt bass boosting!

Y'all gotta stop enabling me 'cause I'll never turn down an opportunity to exposit. So, this is in reference to the recent Monty Hall poll post, and my assertion that "my favorite explanation comes from just bass boosting the numbers involved". To bring us all onto the same page, let's first talk about the Monty Hall problem.

(Also, I tried a cute thing with coloring the words to make the argument easier to follow. I apologize if it's hard to read; you can copy-paste the text somewhere else and read it there if you mind.)

So the setup is, we start with a game. The game is usually ostensibly a part of the show Let's Make a Deal, hosted by Monty Hall, but this particular game never actually appeared on that show. I'll instead host it in a certain infinite casino (The Casgeno) which I often use for probability puzzles like this. Here's the Monty Hall game: You're given three sealed boxes. Two of them are empty, and one has some big desirable prize, like a couple thousand dollars or the keys to a new car or what have you. You are to guess which one of the boxes has the prize, and if you're right, you get to keep the prize.

Okay so there's pretty straightforwardly no strategy to this; you've got a one in three chance of victory. But here's the thing: After you make your guess, the host of the game (let's say his name is still Monty) opens one of the empty boxes and shows you there's nothing inside. Now there's two closed boxes in front of you, and you're offered one more choice: Do you stick with your previous guess, or do you switch to the other closed box?

So that's the usual setup. (Okay the usual one involves doors and goats, but the actual important bits are clearly the same.) Let's ignore this question for now and look at a different one, in which we bass boost the numbers:

This is a game we'll call the Monty World game. Instead of three boxes, Monty tells you that he's selected a person from your homeworld (the Casgeno overlaps infinitely many realities; don't worry about it) completely at random. Eight billion people, all equally likely to be selected. He tasks you with guessing the selected person; if you're correct then you get the big prize.

Again there is no strategy here. Let's say that you guess he randomly selected your skateboarding cousin Throckmorton as the person. But then, after you make this guess, Monty reveals more information. He tells you that the randomly-selected person is either your skateboarding cousin Throckmorton or Mohamed Badawy, a 24 year old retail worker from the Bûlâq al-Dakrûr district of Giza, Egypt. Again you're offered a choice: Do you stick to your cousin Throckmorton, or do you switch to Mohamed?

Unlike in the Monty Hall game, for the Monty World game the choice seems obvious. With eight billion people on the planet, it's vanishingly unlikely that the selected person was anyone you knew, much less your cousin Throckmorton specifically. Like, would Mohamed Badawy's name even come up if he wasn't the selected person? Switching to Mohamed Badawy, 24 year old retail worker from the Bûlâq al-Dakrûr district of Giza, takes your odds of winning from a statistical impossibility to a statistical guarantee:

The only way you lose by switching is if your cousin Throckmorton was, due to staggeringly miraculous bad luck, the actual selected person all along.

I like this modification because it is incredibly effective at pushing back against the "but there are only two options so it should be fifty-fifty" reflex. Yes, there are only two options, but they come from very different places: one of them was proposed by someone who knows nothing about the situation (you) and one of them was proposed by someone who knows everything about the situation (Monty).

Now let's get back to the boxes. If you think about it, the setup is basically the same, except for the scale of the numbers involved. If there were three people in the world instead of eight billion, then the new game and the old game would work exactly the same, beat for beat. The weirdness in the old game is specifically because there are exactly three options, the smallest possible number for which the game can work. When Monty opens the empty box, it just feels like he's revealing an empty box—that's where his hands are, after all—but what he's really doing is informing you that the prize is either in the box you guessed or in the remaining unopened box. (Notice that the revealed box itself is so unimportant that I haven't even given it a color.) The conclusion, then, is the same as before:

The only way you lose by switching is if your initial guess was, due to a quite reasonable one-in-three shot of bad luck, the actual nonempty box all along.

And, yeah, that's what managed to take the problem from "unintuitive but true" to "intuitive" to me. You can either stick with the option you proposed at random or switch to the option proposed by The Guy Who Knows How To Win. Obviously the second one is better, so switching improves your odds.

He is “symbolized as a composite creature, with the body of a human being and the head of a rooster, and with each of his legs ending in a serpent.” His name is actually a mathematical formula: in Greek, the letters add up to 365, the days of the year and the number of eons (cycles of creation).

“That a name so sacredly guarded, so potent in its influence, should be preserved by mystic societies through the many ages . . . is significant,” notes Moses W. Redding, a scholar of secret societies. Redding suggests that only in Freemasonry has this “Divine Word” been “held in due reverence.”

In Kabbalah:

As a carpenter the creator employs tools to build a home, so G'd utilized the twenty-two letters of the alef-Beit (the Hebrew alphabet) to form heaven and earth. They are the metaphorical wood, stone and nails, corner­posts and crossbeams of our earthly and spiritual existence. As in abracadabra "Αύρα κατ' αύρα" אברא כדברא, as he, she, it created the universe with; the Letter, The word, and the number.

As Kabbalist sages say G'd created the alef-beit, before the creation of the world. "The Maggid of Mezritch" explains this on the basis of the first verse in the Book of Genesis “בראשית ברא אלקים את השמים ואת הארץ—In the beginning G'd created the heavens and the earth.” Beresheet Barah Elokim Et (in the beginning God created the) The word את, (es or et) is spelled with an aleph, the first letter of the aleph-beit, and a tav, which is the last. The fact is, את, es, is generally considered to be a superfluous word. There is no literal translation for it, and its function is primarily as a grammatical device. So why is “es” present twice in the very first line of the Torah? It suggests that in the beginning, it was not the heavens and the earth that were created first. It was literally the alef-beit, aleph through to tav. The alpha and the omega, Without these letters, the very Utterances with which G'd formed the universe would have been impossible the Baal Shem Tov explains the verse, “Forever the words of G'd are hanging in the heavens.”

The crucial thing to realize is that G'd, creator, source did not merely create the world once. His Her It's words didn’t just emerge and then evaporate. Rather, G'd continues to create the world anew each and every moment. His Her It's, words are there constantly, “hanging in the heav­ens.” And the alef-beit is the foundation of this ongoing process of creation.

According to Kabbalah, Cabbalah and Qabbalah sages and scholars, when the same letters are transposed to form different words, they retain the common energy of their shared gematria. Because of this, the words maintain a connection in the different forms. We find a classic example of this with the words (הצר, hatzar, troubles), (רצה, ratzah, a desire to run passionately into the “ark” of spiritual study and prayer) and (צהר, tzohar, a light that shines from within). All three words share the same three letters: tzaddik, reish and hei in different com­binations. The Baal Shem Tov, explains, the connection between the words as follows: When one is experiencing trou­bles (hatzar), and one runs to study Spiritual txts and pray with great desire (ratzah), one is illuminated with a G'dly light from within (tzohar) that helps him or her transform there troubles into blessings, as it is said that the source of the twenty-two letters is even higher than that of the Ten Commandments.

As it states: “With you, is the essence of G'd", בך means “with you.” The (Beit which has a gematria of 2) and the (kaf = 20) added together equals 22. Through the twenty-two letters of the alef-Beit, we are all connected to the monad, G'd, Allah الله, the source, and each other through our words and language as words hold power as that which makes us All unique is language as language weaves everything together. These are the teachings of our holy teacher, as the The Zohar affirms that every sentence, every phrase, every word, and even every letter of the Bible exists simultaneously on several levels of meaning. This sacred work clearly declares, “Woe unto those who see in the Law nothing but simple narratives and ordinary words! . . . Every word of the Law contains an elevated sense and a sublime mystery.”

In our Christmas imagery, ancient symbols such as fir trees, mistletoe, holly and ivy sit alongside the baby Jesus, Virgin Mary, angels and shepherds. This mixture of pagan and Christian traditions reminds us that Christmas was superimposed on to much older midwinter festivities. Yet had it not been for a devastating pandemic that swept through the Roman empire in the third century AD, the birth of Jesus would probably not feature at all in our winter solstice celebrations.

If the New Testament is to be believed, Jesus managed to fit a great deal into his short life. But despite all his wise words, good deeds and miracles – not to mention the promise of everlasting life – Christ was nothing more than the leader of an obscure sect of Judaism when the Romans crucified him in AD33.

The Bible informs us that Jesus had 120 followers on the morning of his ascension to heaven. Peter’s preaching swelled the number to 3,000 by the end of the day – but this exponential growth did not continue.

After the Jews in Palestine failed to convert en masse, Jesus’s followers turned their attention to Gentiles. They made some headway, but the vast majority of people across the empire continued praying to the Roman gods.

There were about 150,000 Christians scattered across the empire in AD200, according to Bart D Ehrman, author of The Triumph of Christianity. This works out to 0.25% of the population – similar to the proportion of Jehovah’s Witnesses in the UK today.

Then, towards the end of the third century, something remarkable happened. The number of Christian burials in Rome’s catacombs increased rapidly. So did the frequency of Christian first names in papyrus documents preserved by arid desert conditions in Egypt. Christianity was becoming a mass phenomenon. By AD300 there were approximately 3 million Christians in the Roman empire.

In 312, Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity. Sunday became the day of rest. Public money was used to build churches, including the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem and the Old St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Then, in 380, Christianity became the empire’s official faith.

At the same time, paganism suffered what Edward Gibbon called a “total extirpation”. It was as if the old gods, who had dominated Greco-Roman religious life since at least the time of Homer, simply packed up and left.

If the Romans had not embraced Jesus so enthusiastically in the third and fourth centuries, it is hard to envisage an alternative route by which Christianity would have metamorphosed into a world religion. To understand what caused this momentous change, we must consider why Roman society was so receptive to casting off its old belief system and adopting a new religion at that time.

At its peak, the Roman empire reached from Hadrian’s Wall to the Red Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea. The imperial capital had about 1 million inhabitants. Alexandria’s population was around half that, and Antioch and Carthage’s were just over 100,000.

Goods and people moved back and forth across the Mediterranean, although merchants ventured much farther afield. Size, connectedness and urbanisation made the Roman world remarkable; but it also created the perfect conditions for devastating pandemics to spread.

The Plague of Cyprian was first reported in Egypt in 249. The pandemic hit Rome in 251 and lasted for at least the next two decades. Some historians argue that it caused the period of political instability and economic disruption known as the Crisis of the Third Century, which nearly caused the empire to collapse. For other historians, the Cyprian plague was just one aspect of this ancient polycrisis.

We cannot be sure about the pathogen’s identity. Bishop Cyprian of Carthage, who gave his name to the pandemic, described symptoms including high fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and bleeding from the ears, eyes, nose and mouth. Based on this account, a viral haemorrhagic fever similar to Ebola is the most likely candidate. According to one chronicle, at its height the pandemic killed 5,000 people a day in the capital. Alexandria’s population is estimated to have dropped from about 500,000 to 190,000. Even accounting for exaggeration, it was clearly a terrifying pandemic.

When your friends, family and neighbours are dying, and there is a very real prospect that you will die soon too, it is only natural to wonder why this is happening and what awaits you in the next life. The historian Kyle Harper and sociologist Rodney Stark argue that Christianity boomed in popularity during the Plague of Cyprian because it provided a more reassuring guide to life at this unsettling time.

Greco-Roman deities were capricious and indifferent to suffering. When Apollo was angry, he would stride down Mount Olympus firing arrows of plague indiscriminately at the mortals below. Pagans made sacrifices to appease him. Those who could, fled.

Paganism offered little comfort to those struck down by disease. The old gods did not reward good deeds, so many pagans abandoned the sick “half dead into the road”, according to Bishop Dionysius, the Patriarch of Alexandria. Death was an unappealing prospect, as it meant an uncertain existence in the underworld.

In contrast, Jesus’s message offered meaning and hope. Suffering on Earth was a test that helped believers enter heaven after death. Everlasting life in paradise is quite the prize, but Christianity provided another more tangible benefit, too.

Christians were expected to show their love for God through acts of kindness to the sick and needy. Or as Jesus put it: whatever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me.

Emboldened by the promise of life after death, Christians stuck around and got stuck in. Dionysius describes how, “heedless of danger, they took charge of the sick, attending to their every need”. Early Christians would have saved many of the sick by giving them water, food and shelter. Even today, hydration and nutrition are important elements of the World Health Organization’s Ebola treatment guidelines.

As Stark and Harper point out, the fact that so many Christians survived, and that Christians managed to save pagans abandoned by their families, provided the best recruitment material any religion could wish for: “miracles”.

Without these miracles, Romans would not have adopted Jesus’s message so enthusiastically, and Christianity would probably have remained an obscure sect. In this alternative reality, it’s likely we would still decorate our homes with evergreen plants to symbolise nature’s resilience and vitality at midwinter. The nativity story, however, would be lost in the dustbin of history.

Lore: To outsiders, Dr. A. P. Aery is a mysterious wandering salesman. I’m reality, he’s a sort of wooden golem full of bees; a walking-talking hive hailing from ancient Egypt who has been producing ‘Sweet Bod’ for a very long time. Why? Nobody’s entirely sure. He seems to genuinely want to cure disease, but his fixation on this singular method raises some questions.

Dr. A has a bunch of underground storage areas around the world where he keeps the various ‘sweet bods’ while they mature. These range from catacombs to crypts to old bunkers to even a straight up coffin or two. He generally refers to the bods in a manner akin to a winemaker; he keeps track of the year the process began, the types of flora that provided the honey and the information of the deceased donor. Individual batches have the “vintage” and the donor’s name on the label. 

He’s actually a pretty competent physician and is genuinely polite and professional to his patients. He’s not entirely what one would call ‘morally sound’ but it’s worth noting that the process of creating a Sweet Bod requires the explicit consent of the donor because the process begins before death. 

Dr. A is very particular about this process and refuses to change it for any reason. 

Dr A’s bees are their own unique species not found anywhere else, much to the confusion of entomologists who happen across them.

His hive has been around for thousands of generations and he takes care of all their needs, carrying them to locations that provide nectar, warmth and genetic diversity at all times of the year.

In turn, his bees help him with various tasks including verbal communication; the drones of his colony are specially equipped to produce various frequencies that mimic speech by vibrating their wings. It works impressively well, though his voice does come out sounding a little buzzy.

The Bird Flu: A Modern-Day Plague

There is speculation that a vaccine intended for animals may be better for the public than for humans.

Last month, Israel used its Arrow 3 long-range air defense system for the first time. When the Yemen-based Houthis fired rockets toward southern Israel in the name of religious camaraderie with Hamas and Iran, Israelis were prepared, having started to develop their state-of-the-art defense system back in the 1980s. Meanwhile, Iron Dome, which was also developed by an Israeli company, has been protecting Israelis from short-range rockets fired with increased frequency from Lebanon and Gaza. Reports say Israel has also accelerated the development of Iron Beam, another revolutionary air defense system that would use laser technology to bring down incoming drones and rockets.

It is no secret that billions of dollars in annual military aid from the United States has helped Israel build its military. But the war against Hamas has demonstrated that the foundation of Israel’s military might be the unparalleled collaboration between its military and its technology companies. In Israel, the tech economy has assumed responsibility for keeping Israelis safe and the nation standing.

Technology and national security have been tightly bound in Israel since its founding in 1948. “We lost 10 percent of our population” in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War against the joint forces of Syria, Egypt, and Jordan, said Isaac Ben-Israel, a former head of weapons development at the Israeli Defense Ministry. That led the country’s founding fathers to conclude that Israel didn’t have the numbers to beat an Arab army or a united force from Islamic nations and needed a qualitative advantage. “That meant investing in human capital, in science and technology, primarily for our defense.”

From the very beginning, he said, steps were taken to teach science and technology and have a sufficient number of people with a scientific bent of mind, primarily to defend the country. For instance, under a program called Academic Reserve, the compulsory military service of 1 percent of the total number of high school students was delayed. They were first encouraged to pursue academic degrees. Ben-Israel was among those chosen to pursue his academic interests—an investment that clearly paid off, since he later became chairman of the Israel Space Agency.

“Twelve years ago, the prime minister asked me for solutions to cybersecurity,” Ben-Israel told Foreign Policy from Tel Aviv. “I proposed, and it was made a government regulation, to make cybersecurity a subject in schools. Now, high school students in Israel learn about cybersecurity.”´

Ben-Israel shared how his country, despite its size, has the second-highest number of tech start-ups. “The U.S. has 40 percent of the world’s start-up companies … while Israel is home to 20 percent of the world’s start-ups,” many of which are deeply linked to the needs of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). “In cyber start-ups, we are No. 1,” he said, adding that Israel was home to 35 percent of the world’s tech unicorns, or companies worth more than a billion dollars.

The Israeli tech ecosystem is the second-largest behind Silicon Valley and accounts for 14 percent of total jobs and a fifth of the country’s GDP. Ben-Israel said 96 percent of start-ups fail—yet each one with any merit gets up to $300,000 as seed money from the government. “It’s not a loan,” he said, “which means if you fail, you don’t have to give it back to the government.”

Fewer bureaucratic hurdles; a common cause (i.e., security of the country over profit); a more hands-on approach by the IDF to test the technology; and perhaps above all a common culture, since techies today have been in the armed forces and done mandatory military service, are behind Israel’s success in the field.

“Tens of thousands of demobbed soldiers exit the Israeli military each year with the kind of skills that transfer to the high-tech environment, providing a highly skilled and motivated workforce,” Jon Medved, a venture capitalist dubbed “the startup nation’s guru,” told Foreign Policy via email.

“There’s a sort of ping-pong between a tech company and the IDF,” said Itamar Yaar, a former deputy head of Israel’s National Security Council. “Long before there’s a marketable product, the tech companies offer it to the IDF, the police, or the intelligence agencies, and they try it out, sometimes in ongoing operations, to test and to improve it. If it is good, then it is procured fairly quickly.”

A confluence of interests paves the way for a unique collaboration that saves both time and money. It saves the tech companies from going through what is labeled in California as the “valley of death”—or the long wait between the development of a product and its procurement.

In the United States, for instance, profit is the main motive, and there is deep mistrust of how law enforcement agencies might use the technology—a very different ethos than exists in Israel. Employees of leading companies have protested that government departments may use their labor and skills to target immigrants. Moreover, strict regulations and a cumbersome bureaucracy hinder collaboration.

In Israel, “informal connections” between the industry and the Defense Ministry “are much closer,” compared with anywhere else in the world. “The circle is smaller and progresses quicker,” Yaar added.

In a 2015 research paper, sociologists Ori Swed and John Sibley Butler highlighted the role of the military as a socialization institution. Since most tech companies are led by senior IDF or intelligence officers and are staffed with men and women who were soldiers themselves, “the conversation back and forth is very organic,” Swed, now at Texas Tech University, told Foreign Policy.

In the United States, the ecosystem is vastly different, and profit is the main motive, he added. But in Israel, interests are common when the tech being produced is meant to support the soldiers—children or family members or friends of the owners of the companies.

Shmuel Bar, a former Israel intelligence official, runs IntuView, one such company. Bar’s firm has relocated to the Gaza front line and uses artificial intelligence to go through troves of texts online, and documents procured by the IDF in physical searches, to decipher the meaning of communication between or about Hamas operatives and their activities. It is not a translation but an interpretation service that mines the meaning of texts often hidden in cultural metaphors and religious sayings. It is looking for clues on where Hamas could have hidden hostages or the whereabouts of Hamas’s leadership, among other crucial intelligence, and providing whatever it learns in real time—although the accuracy rate is currently at 70 percent.

“It will be months before we finish the R&D. In the meanwhile, hundreds of soldiers would have died because the IDF didn’t receive the intel it needed,” Bar said. “We are minimizing the losses even though the system isn’t yet perfect.”

A team of Israeli tech workers got together soon after the Oct. 7 attacks and used facial recognition software to search for the missing and for where and when the hostages were last seen.

Israel has also been at the forefront of AI used in war—although the technology has also been blamed by some for contributing to the rising death toll in the Gaza Strip. In 2021, Israel used Hasbora (“The Gospel”), an AI program to identify targets, in Gaza for the first time. But there is a growing sense that the country is now using AI technology to excuse the killing of a large number of noncombatants while in pursuit of even low-ranking Hamas operatives. There are concerns that the IDF is hiding behind the technology to deliberately avenge those who were killed on Oct. 7 or has been genuinely blinded by the technology to its devastating effects on civilians.

Meanwhile, whatever its achievements, Israel is now relying on its tech sector for a more prosaic military advantages. The people building defense tech in peace time have doubled up as soldiers in war and comprise a large chunk of the 300,000 reservists mobilized for the current conflict.
