Stiff Collars and Bloody Shirts • Peeky Blinders 4 • BBC2TV • 2017

I recently posted about David Beckham’s new fashion venture with the classic English brand, Kent & Curwen...

The stiff collar and baggy shirt look they are working in the new shop is derived from the art-direction of the TV series, Peaky Blinders...which has been a smash. The series has launched a whole range of razor-cut hairstyles and has single-handedly made smoking cool again...
The new series of PB has just started on BBC2TV...and judging by the first episode of the new series, this is where it all goes a bit Scarface (1983)...
There was an epic scene in the kitchen...where the chef was preparing the Christmas dinner...there were bits of meat all over the place, and meat-hooks, knives and cleavers, handily placed. Luckily, Tinker John Shelby didn’t need any of these tools, as he had a pistol conveniently to hand...
All this reminded me of Bob Hoskings and Hellen Mirren in The Long Good Friday (1980)...

I visited the new K&C shop, in Covent Graden, last week...I liked the photo-shoot better.
The history of Kent & Curwen has important links to the USA, where they supplied cricket sweaters and club ties to the Hollywood Cricket Club and to celebrity ex-pats through the years. That will help.
Back in the early 1980s, I was wearing stiff colars and baggy shirts; but without all the blood. I’ll have a rummage in the shirt box and dig some of my old shirts out. I’ll be posting about the history of old shirts soon.
PS - Tom Shelby’s new haircut is rubbish, and a bit too Trump for comfort.
