Nanocellulose in Food Science and Technology - Potential, Advantages and Gaps of Research_Crimson publishers
Tumblr media
Since the first description of cellulose molecule in 1838 by the French chemist Anselme Payen, passing through the obtention of nanocellulose in 1977 [1], until the published researches up to 2017, too many advances and different approaches were given to this multifunctional polysaccharide from pulp and paper industry to medical applications. Although the first US Patent submitted by Turbak and co-workers considered nanocellulose a food additive, this product was not commercially exploited because of the high production costs, however, now this panorama is changing with industries focusing their plants in the production of the nanopolymer [2]. Phyto-Nutrients, Nutraceutical, Fermented Foods and Traditional Medicine in Human Health: Issues, Concerns and Strategies_Crimson Publishers
Phyto-Nutrients, Nutraceutical, Fermented Foods and Traditional Medicine in Human Health: Issues, Concerns and Strategies by VK Joshi*
Recently, many diseases related to the life style or the ageing have grown by leap and bounds, needing appropriate solutions and the present focus is to find solace in the lap of nature. The various approaches include the use of herbal or plant medicines (being used from an ancient time all over the world especially India, China and several other countries of Asia), health foods (functional foods), fermented foods, phyto-chemicals and nutraceuticals, bioactive compounds, etc in the cure of such diseases. The major reason for their use is the general belief amongst the people is that such substances are useful in the cure and do not cause any side effect unlike the allopathic medicines. The phyto-chemicals, nutraceuticals, bioactive compounds or the fermented foods have been claimed for the cure of several ailments. The foods containing the phyto-chemicals are termed as nutraceuticals include various nutrients, dietary supplements, specially designed diets or herbal products of both plant and animal origin. However, there are several concerns in the use of these types of approaches and the products. For example many nutraceuticals, herbal medicines or similar photo-chemicals, fermented foods have never been investigated at all for their active component, mechanism of action, metabolic pathways, therapeutic values or the demonstratable effect in model systems. So it is important to apply modern science and tools including chemo-matrix, metabolomics, nutrigenomic to understand the traditional systems of medicine (phyto-chemicals, the Traditional System of Chinese Medicine (TSCM), Ayurveda) and phyto-chemicals with advanced biotechnology, diverse applications and advantages could be exhibited not only in bringing benefits to increase the diversity and composition of herbal phyto-chemicals, but also helping to elucidate the treatment mechanism and accelerate new drug discovery from Chinese herbal medicine. The mechanism of action along with the efficacy of various phyto-chemicals in different clinical conditions needs to be established with help of in vivo studies. Indigenous fermented foods are the major sources of bioactive compounds, reflecting the great usefulness of these foods in human health. It is apparent that interdisciplinary research involving biochemistry, nutrition, microbiology, physiology, pathology and pharmacology should be conducted especially validation. Another concern for the use of nutraceuticals is the lack of quality control, a very serious aspect which needs to be tackled with suitable standards and the methods of evaluation. Overall, it is clearly a fertile ground research for the future.

Knowing the nutritional value of local and international chips is helpful for avoiding chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes or cancer. Hierarchical Cluster Analysis will be used to categories these chips according to their nutritional value. Forty-nine samples of local and international chips and eleven macronutrients and micronutrients will be examined. Multivariate Statistical Analysis of data using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) technique will be utilized through SPSS program. California Crunch was the most caloric with 210kcal. Miaow and Pods offered the highest in protein content, with the same value of 4g. In total fat, Loaded! (White-Choco) contains the highest with 13g of fat. Pee Wee (BBQ) has the highest sodium content with 390mg. Tattoos Corn Tube contains the highest fiber with 4g. For carbohydrates, the highest again is California Crunch, evidently portraying the relevance and relationship between carbohydrate and calories. Moby and Pillows both have the highest sugar content with 13g. Terra Sweet Potato contained the highest vitamin A with a value of 50%. The highest calcium content is 15% from Outback. Chip n’ Chip and Pringles both have the highest vitamin C with 10%. Pods also contained the highest with 40%. HCA can be used as a tool to educate consumers on the nutritive value of chips and help consumers select the appropriate snack that they can include in their diets

Archaea in Food Microbiology: Are They Really Possible Threat or Not?_Crimson Publishers
Tumblr media
Archaea in Food Microbiology: Are They Really Possible Threat or Not? by Mostafa Essam Ahmed Mostafa Eissa* in Clinical Nutrition
In the world of continually growing populations of health compromised individuals, there is an expanding list of pathogenic microorganisms. The list normally includes mainly bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. While the discovery of domain Archaea is considered relatively recent, its biological interaction with human life is still mysterious at different perspectives. This domain is highly distributed globally, even in the harsh environmental conditions, where the possibility of life form existence was excluded. The difficulty of culturing many of Archaeal organisms using conventional culture media is a true barrier for any detection and/or studying of these entities. Only when new bimolecular technologies came into play, some of the ambiguity of these single-celled organisms has begun to resolve. Accordingly, many of Archaeal species may pass the quality control tests undetected to the final consumers. No solidly established data are available till now on our hand about spoilage of food products either preserved or not on storage by Archaea. Moreover, all studies about probable link between certain disease conditions and the presence of Archean are speculating and no true relation was established till now. Thus, the disregard of these microorganisms-especially those on, inside, very close to the human body and the surrounding environment-as potential threat to our life may be a haste discussion when no scientifically rational evidence are available till now. Extensive studies are required to solve this dilemma in a timely manner.

Toxicological Investigations in Food_ Crimson Publishers
Toxicological Investigations in Food by Loai Aljerf in Food science Journal
Tumblr media
Since its inception, Novel Techniques in Nutrition and Food Science has published many reports which provided more coherent and varied viewpoints on such subjects, the journal is introducing a new feature under our editorship. Beginning with this issue, and periodically hereafter, the journal will present an evaluation or planning case study along with critiques by relevant researchers or practitioners.Novel Techniques in Nutrition and Food Science has now reached a stage of development meriting its recognition as a leading medium for communicating a wide variety of toxicological investigations. This achievement is due largely to the unstinting efforts of the editorial board, whose resignation will be viewed with considerable regret by past contributors and subscribers. Toxicology as an applied biological science needs no introduction to readers. There is also an increasing realization that toxicological data can have a substantial impact on commercial operations, on regulatory control and legislation and at the level of public concern.

The Limitations of Food Intake and Biomarkers in the Prevention of Chronic Diseases_Crimson Publishers
Tumblr media
The links between high fat/high sugar diets with insulin resistance and non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) [1] has escalated with recent research that is relevant to the role of healthy diet consumption that may reverse NAFLD connected to Type 2 and Type 3 diabetes [2,3]. A low calorie diet is essential for the treatment of NAFLD and the benefit of this dietary regime is to activate the nuclear receptor Sirtuin 1 (Sirt 1) that is connected to improvements in glucose, cholesterol and antimicrobial activity [4]. Sirt 1 is a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) dependent class III histone deacetylase that targets transcription factors to adapt gene expression to metabolic activity and its deacetylation of nuclear receptors indicates its critical role in insulin resistance in rodents, livestock and man [4]

Crimson publishers-Biomarker-Guided Nutritional Intervention to Treat Autism
Tumblr media
Biomarker-Guided Nutritional Intervention to Treat Autism by Afaf K El-Ansary in Novel Techniques in Nutrition and Food Science.
Autism as a neuro developmental chronic disorder with dramatic increasing prevalence is a great burden on patients and families. Although the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has never approved a drug as useful in autism, and claims, that nutritional supplements are “unproven” and those parents who use these supplements for their autistic children are the victims of “#marketers”. I am writing to discuss with you and with the #NTNF readers that understanding the etiological mechanisms in autism and recording multiple # biomarkers related to these etiologies can be used as target for nutritional intervention strategies.

Home Remedy for Malnourished Kids Works Wonders_ Crimson Publishers
Home Remedy for Malnourished Kids Works Wonders by Ashish Satav in Food Science Journal
Tumblr media
Many severely malnourished (grade IV) children continue to die every year in Melghat because their parents are unwilling to hospitalize them. Myths and mis-beliefs too hold them back from approaching the hospital. However, doctors from MAHAN Trust working in the tribal belt have proved that these children can be also saved through home or community based treatment, both medical and dietary. Successful treatment of Lakshmi Sukhram Jamunkar, a 23-month-old girl whose condition was worse than a grade IV child, is a shining example. She was treated at her home under the supervision of an illiterate but well-trained village health worker, Meerabai. Lakshmi‘s case shows that community level treatment can work wonders provided it is taken up scientifically by trained personnel.

Should Doctors be Sued for Malpractice When they Don’t Inform Patients About the Power of Nutrition?_ Crimson Publishers
Doctors be Sued for Malpractice When they Don’t Inform Patients About the Power of Nutrition? by Skip Stein in Food science Journal
Tumblr media
You see it in Social Media all the time about new law suits against drug companies for ineffective or debilitating drugs and dangerous/deadly side effects. Tobacco companies were successfully sued for billion $ for the deadly/toxic products they advertised/promoted as safe. There is now and has been, overwhelming evidence, peer reviewed studies and even internal documents disclosed to prove that processed food companies know the dangers of their products; yet continue to market/sell them to the public. Studies have proven the health and curative benefits of a whole food plant based lifestyle and diet can achieve, yet you never hear that from your doctor. No, in many cased, doctors actually tell patients that food will have no impact on their condition.

Feeding for Patients with Neurodegenerative Disoders as a Focus on Niemann Type C Pick Disease (Npd)_ Crimson Publishers

Feeding for Patients with Neurodegenerative Disoders as a Focus on Niemann Type C Pick Disease (Npd) by Copetti Santos D in Nutrition and Food Science
The brain has a remarkable capacity for plasticity, an aptitude that ironically contrasts with the limited therapeutic approaches that would reduce the consequences of brain insults. Although a large amount of clinical trials have been performed to test the efficacy of various pharmacological compounds in minimizing the burden of neurological disorders, the results of many of these trials have been unsuccessful.

Ethiopia’s Manufacturing Industry Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward: A Sectoral Overview_ Crimson publishers
Ethiopia’s Manufacturing Industry Opportunities, Challenges and Way Forward: A Sectoral Overview by Tekeba Eshetie in Food science journal_ Nutrition and Food open access journal
Tumblr media
The growth of the manufacturing sector within industry is essential to build national technological capacity, industrial capability and create broad based job opportunity and improve income. In addition to this, the development of the manufacturing industry helps to improve the total factor productivity and competitiveness of the overall economy and its trickledown effect to up and down the supply chain. Because of existence of a number of comparative advantages in the country and to strengthen its competitiveness the Government of Ethiopia offered multiple incentives for the growth of the manufacturing sector. Though the manufacturing sector is a way out for sustainable economic development its growth is not without challenges. The major ones include unskilled labor forces with limited experience; limited infrastructure; external pressure from global market, shallow industrial research and development activities, underdeveloped market information system, problems related to trade logistics and limited promotion made on the resources and other opportunities.
